Judging by first five stages of Ciocco the impression was right and the 208 R5 seems to be a bit slow (at least for the moment). I know it's hard to compare with Basso's CNG car but Andreucci is reasonably slower than Nucita and Scandola with normal S2000 cars.

At the moment when 208 starts officialy for first time, MSport finished building 50th Fiesta. They really gained a lot, lot of data during that year with many cars running in different conditions and improved the car a lot in recent months. 208 for sure will be competitive sooner than later, but clearly they need improving. They even recently made a lot of development tests, mainly in south France, but they have no comparision with competition.
It looks like homologation of Peugeot 208 T16 by FIA was refused. Andreucci will start in Ciocco with national homologation.
FIA
Not FIAs fault if Peugeot didn't present a compliant car.

To date, Peugeot Sport has received 22 firm orders for the 208 T16: eight in Italy, five in France, three in the Czech Republic, two in Germany and one in Brazil, Denmark, Latvia and Belgium.
Italy: Paolo Andreucci
Czech Republic: Miroslav Jakes
Denmark: Christian Jensen
Brazil: Ilho dos Santos
Latvia: V. Gryazin
Belgium: Verschueren?
Anyone know the rest?
Brazilian driver Ilo Diehl dos Santos bought the 208 but he will compete only in Paraguay and the Codasur Championship.

Belgium is DG Sport.. Verscheuren his team GoDrive has ordered a DS3.
Andreucci was better on day two in Ciocco, or maybe it was just because the other guys were cruising. Even so, wasn't Basso expected to be slower than normal because he was running gas?

We dont know the rules under which Basso started. CNG car must have some changes, we dont know how big was restrictor etc. So it is not so much comparatable...

Basso's Fiesta have or not more weight because the CNG?
Mirek
16th March 2014, 13:36
Definitely it must have more weight and worse balance due to the pressure tank. On the other hand none of us know which restrictor size he has. Sure bigger than petrol one. It's only a question how much bigger.

Mirek even if we know the restrictor size ie 35mm this cant tell us how powerfull it is to campare with normal r5 cars.We dont know if gas has the same output like petrol at these direct injection engines.
Also we have to think that Bassos gas fiesta was just the first rally. For sure will be evolution at this side too.

You are definitely right. If I remember right the ex-Stohl CNG Lancer which was used by Enge in our rallysprints had 36 mm restrictor and still lacked torque compared to 33 mm petrol ones. But as You said with DI it sure works different way.

Well, the 208 looks nice and sounds nice but the difference in performance vs. Basso's Fiesta is quite visible. Surprised Peugeot seemed to have dropped the ball on this one, especially as they had an extra three months than planned..

I am not saying anything about the performance of the 208 T16 based on a single rally, but one thing to remember about this project is that Peugeot Sport doesn't have even nearly the same resources that they had during the development of 207 S2000 for example...not to even mention 206 WRC.
MikeyD
16th March 2014, 20:23
This does not seem to be a good start for the Peugeot 208 T16, I was hoping for much better. :(
Even discounting Basso’s Fiesta, The 208 T16 was struggling to compete with the Skoda S2000 and the 207 S2000 of Nucita.
Andreucci compared to Nucita SS1 +4.1, SS2 +3, SS3 +2.4, SS4 +10.9, SS5 +5.8, SS6 +1.2, SS7 +6.4, SS8 +2.1, SS9 +0.8, SS10+4.3
The second day was better, but I don’t think that it is representative as the top drivers were already cruising for the finish.
Come on Peugeot, the 208 T16 needs to be at least as fast as the 207 S2000, from what we saw in Ciocco, there is still a lot of work do. The worrying thing is that now the car is homologated it will be much harder to make the improvements needed.
From what I hear the only modification to Basso’s car is the Fuel system, everything else is retained according to the FIA homologation including the 32mm restrictor. From Basso’s comments the car is also heavier than a normal Fiesta R5, so they are at a disadvantage.
Looking forward to Acropolis, hopefully this will be a better rally for the Peugeot R5. :)

Let's wait for some time to really judge the car. I remember back when the first S2000 machines came the times were sometimes slower than Group N, the cars need development and km's. Even the Fiesta R5 with so many km's and races hasn't proved it is regularly faster than an S2000 or on par with RRC.
On the other hand I think the promised "cheaper" category was just a clever stunt for the manufacteurs to sell new cars to privateers, from what I have been hearing the costs are not so far from an S2000 because reliability is not great.

True with the Fiat, but when the big boys got involved (Peugeot, Skoda and Ford) their cars were quick pretty much straight away. I think the best cars tend to be born well and then get better, rather than start on the back foot.
Hopefully Ciocco is an anomaly and we will see a better performance on Acropolis, but it has certainly been a shaky start for the 208.

And in my opinion it is faster. Ford R5 is faster than the S2000 cars, probably not in all situations but in most of them if you put the same driver in a Ford and in a S2000 he is faster with R5, in my opinion. Something it is not well with Peugeot, citroen had more caution and postponed the homologation...

The promised "cheaper" cars are based in unrealistic FIA mandatory costs that FIA, from the beginning, knows manus won’t comply. A perfect example for what a ruling body should be!
Still R5 costs are a fraction from RRC/WRC.

Nope, already confirmed by Peugeot Sport Dealer Team DK this Monday that will not get the car delivered in time.
They state that the plan now is to do a 'minirally' (short rally, 50 km SS maximum) on the 12th of April - provided they get their car by then.

Maybe it will be interesting for some:
Peugeot has two homologated ratios for gearboxes - 173kmh and 198 kmh. They say to reach max speed on long one takes very, very long so it's not always useful, but at least some option.
Fiesta has only one ratios as for now - 177kmh.
It will be interesting to read opinions of people from our Forum who took a ride in R5 cars before Acropolis.

I still believe it will be homologated 01.01.2015, or March at the latest and not "mid 2015" as Skoda say.

I still believe it will be homologated 01.01.2015, or March at the latest and not "mid 2015" as Skoda say.
The car looks good already and they have 8 months until January. I hope the success of Peugeot might make them hurry things up a bit lol.

They have only tested old fabia with 1.6T and it´s not 100% same thing.

That's not the problem. Production of Fabia III is going to start during Q3. 2500 pieces is circa one week production. The car already exists for many months and is being tested in secrecy (I mean stock one). I would not be surprised if they already tested R5 in new shell too. Only a fraction of tests is public.

There could still be a change of seeing a Skoda R5 from the beginning of 2015. Of course they (Skoda) have made their own decision but the regulations could make it possible.
ARTICLE 13: PROVISIONAL HOMOLOGATION
Manufacturers have the possibility of obtaining provisional Group N or in Group A (in this case, the necessary information must be added in the complementary information section of the VK-S2000-Ra form) homologation of the family and the model from which the kit is derived, before the total production necessary for definitive homologation has been reached, on condition that:
- cars of the model and family under consideration are freely on sale to customers;
- the total production of the family under consideration (25,000 units), and of the model under consideration (2500 units), is completed before the start of the last event in the Championship of the current year;
- all other homologation requirements are fulfilled.
If the full production is not completed before the deadline, the manufacturer:
- will be excluded from all the results of the current year;
- will be fined a considerable sum of money;
- will be suspended for one year.
They could quite easily do that, I mean they are clearly going to produce more than 25,000 Fabias in a year unless the world ends.
March wouldn't be so bad though, they would only have to miss a couple of events as Peugeot did this year.

M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson is considering bolstering his company’s presence in the FIA European Rally Championship by fielding one of his WRC stars in a Ford Fiesta R5 on selected events.
Kajetan Kajetanowicz is flying the flag for M-Sport’s Fiesta R5 project in the ERC and has shown great pace on his three appearances so far this season, landing a podium on the most recent round in Greece. However, Wilson wants to ensure that the Fiesta R5 continues to run at the head of the field in the face of opposition from Peugeot’s 208T16, so is looking into the possibility of getting another star name into one of his cars alongside Kajetanowicz, the four-time Polish champion.
“I’ve no plans to at the moment but there’s nothing to say that we won’t put Ott Tänak out,” said Wilson. “I need to make sure our cars are winning wherever possible so we will probably do something.”
With Kajetanowicz not including the Discover Northern Ireland Circuit of Ireland Rally on his schedule for 2014 with the LOTOS Rally Team, Robert Barrable will be the lone Fiesta R5 representative when the ERC resumes in Belfast from 17-19 April.

Yes, but the 208T16 has only just been launched/homologated and few have been sold yet.
The Fiesta R5 has the following stats and there should surely be more than one in the ERC...
Launched midway through 2013, the Fiesta R5 has become one of M-Sport’s most successful models, with close to 70 orders placed. The Cumbrian-built cars have been shipped to customers in 21 countries and have claimed 27 class wins and ten outright victories.
M-Sport’s Fiesta was the first R5 to be homologated and, as rival models from Peugeot and Citroen have been a long time coming, it has become the weapon of choice in the World Rally Championship’s WRC2 class.
Category leader Yuriy Protasov drives one, as does the man in second, Lorenzo Bertelli. No fewer than 14 cars lined up for the start of Vodafone Rally de Portugal.
ESSENTIAL FIESTA R5 STATS

I tend to disagree. For example in Barum both Valoušek and Kostka who drove the R5 managed to finish on podium with Fabia S2000 in the years before. They are "just" locals but very capable on home soil. Anyway what I meant is the marketing value where Peugeot managed to win out of the box while M-Sport struggles despite having the car competing for a reasonable time.
Ketomaa and Kubica have won ERC events in the Fiesta RRC which is similar.

I have the feeling that the 208 is quicker than the Fiesta, but I would like to see a known quantity driver in the Fiesta so we know more. Kajetanowicz is for sure a good driver, but I don't think we know quite how good outside Poland.

I am little bit confused. They said they will do Adam cup firts of all, then Adam R2, then Corsa R3T and then Corsa R5. They are little bit late in comparison to their press releaases from the very beginning, but those Adam projects are going very well and they also put two young drivers into ERC in factory R2 cars, which is good sign.

From sure source (PM if you want to know more), nothing is done now. They've done the CUp, they've done the R2. But for the rest, there is no fund for the moment. No R3, no R5 in development.
They'll see at mid season what they'll do, but there isn't a lot of hope to have a bigger car.

Opel has to go on what they´ve started. The brand itself is said to be more and more sportif, so they must prove it with just go on to R5, which I believe is the most proper class for the future (with small adjustments).

28th April 2014, 11:20
So that's it...Christian Jensen finished the second round of the danish championship today saturday(he took the 2nd position overall in the last stage) ;)
No idea if he had any kind of problems during the race though
At the small sprint-event (it's all done within the confines of a tarmac factory) he complained that the car was too low, and that he was a bit scared of the kind of reaction the car would have to the more bumpy sections.
I wasn't in Vejen, but no major issues were reported from there. What I do know is that the stages were very challenging, and that Christian has a tendency to take a while to get going, both in a new car and after a winter break.
Ib Kragh on the other hand has already done two real rallies this year (Tank S in the Netherlands and Wikinger in Germany), so he is up to rally speed for the year. Also, the rally was made by his codriver Mie Petersen, who no matter how many times she's said that it won't make any difference.. Ib has always done well in her events.
That being illegal recce (she vehemently denies that) or just stages that are well suited to his driving style and car setup, I really don't know, the results are just there. More so previous years than this year though, it has to be said.
To get a real feel of the speed of the 208 on Danish stages, I would wait until at least the fourth round in Slagelse and perhaps even later in the season - Christian has already had all the excuses out, so is playing down expectations..
Driverwise, Christian should be a bit faster than Ib, if results in somewhat equal 207s are anything to go by.

Translation of Jakeš's words
We did around 120 kilometers during the test near Vyškov. The engine is fantastic and the same feeling I have about brakes. It's big difference for me because I can compare the new Citroën basically only with my last years Lancer. The worse thing is suspension. The setup we got from the French is totally useless for Czech roads. The chassis is extremely stiff, it could work only on circuit or on some their French asphalts. When we drove over straights it was quite ok but when some bumpy part appeared the car was very nervous. I didn't try any real crest so I have no idea how the suspension will behave in landings. Anyway the only chance to improve especially to set the suspension properly is to test and test. I strongly believe Rostislav Šašek will help us with dampers. He is preparing dampers also for Mini of Václav Pech.

Anyway, interesting battle of R5s in Targa Florio next week, with Basso(Ford), Campedelli(Ford), Michelini(Citroën)and Andreucci(Peugeot) ;)
Interesting. Confirms why the Peugeots were below expected performance in Ireland.
I'm pretty sure that Peugeot didn't do Ireland with default customer setup ;)

Something from him... in coming two weeks before Rally Šumava they will have another test. They need to change differential and damper settings. He said he had problems mainly in case of double or multiple jumps/bumps. With just one jump it was ok. He commented that the car was oversteering too much. They had some problems with misting windscreen but that was solved in service (SS9, 10). In SS13 Jakeš stalled engine in one place and could not start it for 20 seconds.
Generally their press release was positive and I'm sure spectators liked the car.
The car is nice to watch.Sound is also good.Reminds me old WRC cars.

I think it is from 2008.
M-Sport homologated longer gear ratios for Fiesta R5, with them max speed should be around 185km/h

Oh, Future World were a famous team some 10 years ago! They had such great cars as Toyota Corolla WRC and Subaru Impreza WRC and were competing in Belgian, Polish and even European Championship. Their drivers were Rocco Theunissen, Leszek Kuzaj, Bruno Thiry and many other famous names. Their team boss was Gerard Magniette. I don't know what happened to them since then.

Jarek you forgot about Tsjoen who won some Belgian titles with their Corolla WRC and yes indeed they introduced the Porsche 911 road challenge what never really came popular although very spectacular with drivers as Duez, Snijers, Bodson, Van Parijs..
More info around MYracing: http://www.myracing.be/FR/menu/2_Prsentation_MY_Racing.html
They run also Yazeed's Fiesta RRC and I think but not sure that the DS3 R5 they building up will be for Chardonnet? His WRC3 campaign was a DS3 from MYracing.

I think the tyres are not so bad, especially on dry conditions. In Belgium loops are relatively short, so it's hard to judge on the wear of the tyres. (In average you don't see more than 40km SS between two service-breaks.) Of course in Ypres conditions are different, and tyre wear could be an issue (especially if we see extremely hot weather like we've seen in 2010). From my feeling I don't think it's possible for him to be much faster with Michelin tyres. The Kumho's are "alive" and moving much more than the michelin tyre, obviously, but I think this suits his driving style and he actually likes it. :)

In french magazine Auto Hebdo, Olivier Maroselli, former ingeneer from Mitsubishi and Renault talked about Maxi Rally cars in Argentina. He is now working in Argentina for Tango Rally Team, and helped to create this category.
He said FIA is interested in what he did there. They are interested in a upgrade he is doing with an ex Peugeot ingeneer, Stéphane Basque. It would be a 1.6T engine and worked as a kit, in the spirit of R5.
FIA would like to use it to replace N cars, in order to see WRC / Regionals Rallies growing in term of competition.
Teams would have only to assemble the chassis. The whole other parts would be the same for each models.
A full car will cost around 150 000€.
Next year should be very interesting in ERC. Peugeot should have got the car working properly by then and I expect Skoda to have tested properly so we can have a real duel for the title!

The Maxi Rally cars use a 2.4 Honda engine, four wheel drive transmission from the Subaru Impreza, Modena 6-speed sequential gearbox. Basically what's free to choose is the suspension.
In Rally Argentina what was being said is that talks with Michelle Mouton were held, regarding the homologation of the 1.6 turbo engine. The plan of Mario Barattero, one of the developers of the idea, is to take a car to Europe until the end of this season.
