Maybe so... M-Sport did put all their efforts into the WRC car for Ogier in the last two years.

Not surprising if the new R5 is undercooked.Who's the (new) guy who has been in charge of it? Read somewhere it was the first time he'd been tasked with the build/design/development of the new r5.

Anders Grřndal did the first test with his new fiesta R5 mk2 today, ready for this weekends rally Grimstad on tarmac.

I have just checked out the results of Rally Grimstad. Grřndal and his new Fiesta finished in the second position, 49 seconds behind Veiby. Veiby won 7 out of 8 stages, Grřndal managed to win 1 stage only.

Mads in Germany tried something new. He went back to a trick he used when he was "youth-rallying in sweden in a Volvo 740.

Since he do not have brake balance adjustment in the C3 R5, he put on close to worn out brake pads at the front, since the car braked way to much on the fornt axle, to get closer to the balance front/rear he was looking for. Smart thinking!

Does any of the R5s come with adjustable brake balance. or is it not allowed in R5?

Mirek
28th August 2019, 08:43
Br21 can for sure tell us exactly but Pavel Dresler told me that Fabia also has no brake balance regulation. Likely not allowed by the rules. Otherwise I don't know the reason.

Brake balance adjuster is allowed, but now more and more cars have only one brake master cylinder for both front and rear brakes, so obviously there is no way to adjust the bias. Fabia for example has such solution (two way pump, similar like gpN homologated for handbrake in Lancer Evo cars).

Very good pace from the new Fiesta R5 with Demaerschalk behind the wheel at Omloop van Vlaanderen. The stages are very similar to those in Ypres (a part of one stage has actually been used for Ypres in the past). The engine seems to be working very well, lots of torque as it seems, very good exit from junctions. In terms of suspension it doesn't seem as stable as the Fabia yet, but looks already better than the previous Fiesta. And not important, but it's a very nice looking and sounding car, quite different from all other R5 cars. Very promising debut in Belgium, huge contrast to what the car has shown in WRC so far. Can't wait until the car is more defined and the drivers/teams start to get more experience with it. Next event for Demaerschalk is Condroz.

Good to see it confirmed that it was running to FIA compliant spec here. There have been questions over what restrictor they were running on past rallies.

I'm rather bemused by what's going on with this Proton program. Surely there must have been some Proton money involved in it's development, as I can't think that MEM funded it alone, particularly with the likes of Gronholm having tested it. It seems to be reasonably quick in the hands of Ollie Mellors, who I don't think is the fastest driver in this country (hard to tell though, with most of his rallying having been done in the Proton S2000 competing against no other S2000s). There seems to be huge fan interest from Malaysia in particular! Search Proton R5 and you'll see all the views it gets. There's a British Rally Media test media with nearly 110k views. My own 14 second video of it from Goodwood in 2017 got 15k views, nearly 15k more than most of my other videos... 53% of which were Malaysian (next country Portugal at 6%).

So anyway, I'd love to know where this program is going. At this rate I fear nowhere, but seemingly reasonably quickly...

Today (Tuesday, September 24) the first of four test days was held that Hyundai Motorsport planned to evaluate the effectiveness of the developments developed for the i20 in the R5 version. The start of this intense test program was Andrea Crugnola who traveled about 250 kilometers on the asphalt around Mazamet (south of France).

The driver from Varese worked closely with the engineers of the Korean company, focusing above all on the new suspensions that immediately appeared extremely fast and effective. What is the antechamber of an ongoing collaboration? For now, nothing is decided.

Certainly an excellent opportunity for Crugnola, which is not new to these types of activities anyway: already Citroen Racing and Renault Sport have involved it several times in the development tests of DS3 and Clio R3T in the past years. Now it's up to Craig Breen, who starting tomorrow will continue the work started by Italian.

Not yet I think. It set some better times in Wales but I guess they did a lot of the testing on similar roads and Greensmith/Paddon should have been a strong lineup for that event.

I suspect it was useful for MSport engineers to get the insight of someone who had just driven Polo and Fabia Evo, and interesting for us to hear in depth and honest opinions too.

Sounds like Fiesta is fundamentally good but might be difficult to get the right setup for any given condition.

Customer feedback makes the Polo GTI R5 even better

Polo GTI R5 customer racing car enjoys rally success around the world
Feedback from customer outings all over the world is incorporated in technical fine tuning
Production of the Polo GTI R5 stepped up to meet sustained high demand

Fine tuning for the car with the winning touch: Volkswagen Motorsport is optimising the Polo GTI R5, based on the experiences of customer teams. The 200-kW (272-PS) four-wheel drive car is used in a diverse range of rallies all over the world. The findings made during these outings flow directly into the process of updating and maintaining the product: the Polo GTI R5 will first receive modified suspension parts in spring, while new components for other key areas of the car will be developed over the course of the year.

“The success story of the Polo GTI R5 is overwhelming. In customer hands, it had already claimed more than 75 victories and 125 podium finishes by the end of 2019,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. “However, it is not only the success of our customers that is important to us, but also their experience in a wide range of conditions – whether on asphalt, gravel, or ice and snow. Our engineers use this feedback to make detailed improvements to the Polo GTI R5. Our goal is to ensure that the Polo GTI R5 remains successful.”

While new chassis components are already being used by customers, a larger package of detailed improvements will be developed over the course of the year and homologated for use in competitions including the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), FIA European Rally Championship (ERC), and national championships. Volkswagen is also stepping up production to meet the huge demand – 20 percent more Polo GTI R5 than initially planned will now be built in 2020. Production will continue beyond 2020.

High degree of reliability, high performance – Volkswagen is preparing the Polo GTI R5 for the future

“As is well known, if you are not moving forward, you are always moving backward in the world of motorsport,” said François-Xavier “FX” Demaison, Technical Director at Volkswagen Motorsport. “As such, it is hugely important to be constantly working on ideas and solutions for improved performance and durability. Thanks to the comprehensive feedback we receive from our customers, we have been working on updates for the Polo GTI R5 since last year and the first detailed improvements are already being delivered to customers.”

To make this possible, countless amounts of feedback from teams and drivers currently running the Polo GTI R5 in series from the Arctic Circle to Africa, and North and South America to Europe, have been collected and analysed. Volkswagen introduced a professional feedback system to make the process simpler and more direct.

IIRC correctly Campedelli actually wasn't that fast here last year but benefited from some retirements/problems ahead?

You’re right, Campedelli’s P2 at Rome was also a bit lucky, althought he managed to show top speed on other CIR events.

Anyway, the car was homologated more than one year ago (July 1, 2019) so it makes sense to wonder how MSport is trying to improve it, once continuing to blame the drivers for the lack of results (Suninen, Camilli, Paddon and now Fourmaux) will hardly make it faster.

Campedelli had eight Top 3 times at Rally di Roma last year, in what was his and the cars debut together.

The big disappointment with Fourmaux was he couldnt stay on the road to show anything this year.

Until I see the Fiesta R5 Mk2 in the hands of a top driver more often I wont write it off yet.

NIki Mayr-Melnhof is preparing to start his first full season in the FIA European Rally Championship at the wheel of an even faster Ford.

The former Austrian champion has upgraded to M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta R5 MkII for 2020 and has high hopes for his new challenger.

“We are anticipating there is a good change made and for sure it will be faster,” said Mayr-Melnhof. “The main thing is the engine, there is much more power in the low revs, [compared] with the old car. The centre of gravity is much, much lower the steering is a big advantage.

“I drove a World Rally Car five or six years ago and the steering seems very similar to a World Rally Car. There are a lot of small changes which add up to better car, more drivable and easier to drive. We also hope it’s quicker.”

As well as testing in Italy on Tuesday, Mayr-Melnhof has tested and rallied in Hungary and Czech Republic ahead of the new ERC season.

“We still got a bit to do set-up wise but we’re going to work with an engineer from M-Sport who is going to come out for the rally and squeeze out the last potential of the car,” said the Drift Company Rally Team driver.

Even after sampling the competing R5s in depth, Crugnola still prefers the C3, and “not just because I drive a Citroën, but because it’s true,” as he’s quick to qualify.

“With the Citroën I’m more confident with the front axle, which is very important for my driving style,” Crugnola explained to DirtFish.

“With the other R5s that I drove in the past, I had to change my driving style a bit. Now I can brake a little bit earlier and I can get on the throttle earlier, because I can preload the front axle a little bit less.

The family firm is a Ford dealership, so does not want to stop using Ford, but he would like to win, amd feels that he can not do that in the Mk2.

Tested a Skoda Fabia Evo this weekend, and won. He liked that car, but will test more cars, I guess Polo, C3 and i20 as well, before deciding car for 2021.

That would be great but the program seems to be underfunded since the beginning. Proton is still recovering from a serious crisis, which forced them to let Geely get a 49.9% stake and lead the company. https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/China-s-Geely-buys-big-stakes-in-Proton-Lotus-for-discounted-price-of-235m
