RRC was allowed this year but with a 28mm restrictor wich turns the car to a non-competitive car...

Sure this is not the final design, but from my side of view: Some good point in the design of R5 (green rims) , but as I said a long time ago, I am missing the red colour there. The designs from 2012 till now have only green-black-white, and it is not graphically strong mix. Even very thin red lines would make it better.

Any technical points to note from the photos alone Mirek or nothing significant to see?
I note they have the cut outs ahead of the rear wheels (as on the 208), I presume this is to aid airflow and cooling to the rear brakes.
Also the front bumper is quite intricate with the channel to the side of the lower radiator exiting ahead of the front wheels. Is this for cooling something or even for aerodynamic reasons?

Nearly the same is written in Austrian Automobile drivers association ÖEAMTC december news, of Skoda not competing at Jänner Rally and starting season when Fabia R5 is ready - so concluding from this no Rally Liepaja, too.

I think new ERC rules are good for them - it could be enough for Skoda. Nobody knows what is happening at Peugeot Sports at the moment, if they stay in ERC with Sainteloc, future of Breen and Abbring unclear etc.

Bernardo Sousa is not good example. When he was not driving RRC, he has no chance to be on same speed with other drivers in previous starts in ERC/IRC. This year on Acores it was the same, but he was lucky that all other rivals retired or had problems...
Always there is different view to IRC/ERC vs WRC2 in Portugal between Sousa and Magalhaes. Each of them has his own opinion...

I know how this works very well. There is more aspects, not only what "prefer sponsors". There is lot of things which are deciding what is preferable or not. For sure for them is better to fight for top 3 in WRC2 than to be on the end of top ten in ERC (hypothetically). For sure it is also on the driver how he can present to the sponsors/partners what should be better for them. There are lot of aspects, but in this special case I am sure that Bernardo is doing primary WRC2 as he doesnt like ERC :)
WUff1
11th December 2014, 16:28
It´s not only Sousa who prefers WRC2 - otherwise the entries of ERC would be better besides the same 5-7 drivers, who do most of the ERC-rallies.
And I think that´s why ERC will never make a real brakethrough.

ERC has big potential and should be real brake through like it was with IRC. But we will see if promoter will be able to fullfil this potential...

Since when is Bernardo a car manufacturer? Please think about what I said again. Manufacturers need to be the center of what happens, they need overall victories because the winner is only one, they want media attention, to drive the stages when all fans are there not when half of them left. They want spectators to talk about them. They need to have the best and biggest places in the service park etc. etc. Nothing like than can be offered by WRC2 to manufacturers.

I think Kopecky was also testing Fabia in Italy. By the way what is the program for him for 2015, has he said anything?
Looking more general on his career what you think his next step should be? I mean he tried WRC in Fabia WRC, but it wasn't competetive car yet he still managed to score some points (and 5th place in Rallye Deutschland). He was close on winning IRC and finally won ERC in 2013 then APRC last year. There is no doubt he is a good driver and not that old yet. With some WRC experience he could do well there, but I suppose his contract with Skoda will define his future. WRC-2 is an option with Fabia R5 but is it really challenging for him? What you guys think?

I'm fairly sure Kopecký will stay with Škoda and compete in whatever championship they send him in. My personal guess is that he will do some events of ERC and Czech championship this year and full ERC next year.

I don't get the impression Kopecky has any grand ambitions to drive in WRC. He never quite had the 'edge' of his teammates, however he usually brings the results in wherever Skoda send him so I am sure it is mutually beneficial for them to stay together.
Maybe he could be involved in this project too if it comes to fruition, after all he used to be a circuit racer: http://www.toilef1.com/WTCC-La-piste-Skoda.html

Agree, but on the other hand I think he is now in better shape than in WRC era, or IRC era. Cooperation with Dresler made him even faster. I have been wondering for last 3 years what it would be if Kopecky will drive against Prokop somewhere. In my opinion Kopecky is better, but just my personal opinion.

German championship will be interesting this year. Some R5/S2000 cars (in 2014 there were hardly any), Mark Wallenwein back, and not only fighting between Zeltner and Gassner jun.

Kopecký is definitely faster than Prokop on asphalt. On gravel maybe not but I wouldn't be surprised if he was faster there too. The other thing is that Prokop has huge experience with WRC events which Kopecký doesn't have. Of course the same goes the opposite way about the events Kopecký knows and Prokop not. Anyway if they would ever met on a neutral soil I would bet on Kopecký.

Agree with both of you and I would say Kopecky way faster then Prokop (btw have they ever met, do we have any comparison form Czech Championship or somewhere else?). Obviously Prokop has the knowledge of current WRC events and quite a experience, but he is not improving. His only good results come from consistency so from time to time he'll get top 5 place. If, like someone wrote, Kopecky doesn't have any WRC ambitions then it's fine. He can another 10 ERC campaigns or win some African/South America titles. But I would like to see him in competetive car in some WRC events.

Last time I remember Kopecký and Prokop in the same event was IRC Barum rally 2009 where Kopecký drove works Fabia S2000 and Prokop works Peugeot 207 S2000 (he was chosen as BFG driver for the event).
Here is Prokop's stats from the event (5th overall, only two stages in top 3 and two offs): http://ewrc-results.com/driver_info.php?e=404&d=36015&t=Barum-Czech-Rally-Zlin-2009

For Prokop it was his first ever S2000 start but still the difference was really big.

Another vote for Kopecky over Prokop.. I also agree on Liposh' point about Dresler. I think they have won the majority of events which they started together.
I would like to see Kopecky in the Fabia R5 on one or two WRC events to see what he could do, Deutschland or Catalunya for example where he was fast even with the Fabia WRC.

Have you heard that the Swedish Mitsubishi R5 didn't get the homologation? The creators of this project must be very disappointed.
In their official Facebook this is what they say:
Following its brief appraisal outing two weeks ago, the car is going through a process of technical accreditation. This has included a visit by representatives of the SBF (Svenska Bilsportförbundet - the governing body for Motorsport in Sweden), who are now assessing the information. The technical accreditation will enable the Mitsubishi R5 to enter national events as part of its planned development programme.
We want to start the test and development programme as soon as possible and entered this weekend’s opening round of the Swedish Rally Championship in advance of the technical accreditation being completed - just in case we had the opportunity to run the car. Whilst there was nothing wrong from a technical perspective, we have to wait for the paperwork to be signed off, so we are now planning to enter the next round of the Swedish Championship.
The first test (see video below) surpassed our expectations in every way. Other than a couple of small tweaks the car ran perfectly from the moment it was started to the moment we put it back on the trailer – and that’s not just a PR sound bite, it’s what really happened. We were particularly pleased with the performance of the Öhlins suspension that has been developed especially for the Mitsubishi R5. This was only the first test, so we know there’s much more to come from the car.
Development work is scheduled to recommence next week.

I interpret the facebook text so that they did not get the homologation peperwork ready for the first rally of the swedish championship, but hopes that SBF will get it finished for the next round.
As I interpret Berglund he was just pissed since he had planned to run the chapionship, and now misses a round.
i guess doing a national homologation also takes some time.

reason for non approval rumors say was TIG instead of MIG welded cage. So small potatoes to fix I guess!
Mirek
11th February 2015, 01:54
What's wrong with TIG?
Jeppe
11th February 2015, 08:44
That TIG welding cannot be the reason. Almost all of the T45 roll cages are and are advised to weld with the TIG. The welding itself can be the reason if it´s made by the person who cannot weld. Maybe the problem is related to roll cage homologation?!

Only parts authorised by the present regulations and/or parts mentioned in the “modifications /
lightening of the body” VO may be removed.
TIG type welds are prohibited for the body shell and roll cage.

That's interesting, thanks. I wonder why. I'm no technologist but I do remember that TIG and MIG main difference is that MIG uses meltable metal electrode while TIG uses tungsten one which doesn't add any material to the weld. I thought TIG was preferred for thin material welding but it's a long time I learned about that at school...

little bit off-topic, but once I was discussing about roll-cages with Prodrive engineer and he showed me some tests they made. They find out strength was same with MIG and TIG welding and MIG was simply cheaper and quicker, so all their FIA homologated cages they were making with MIG.
Maybe also in case of R5 it's becuse of costs?

Maybe I am talking bullshit, but I have the impression this car is geared quite long but has a super-torquey engine, which is similar to the winning recipe of the Fabia S2000 (relatively speaking).
The car rockets up that twisty uphill section barely using any revs.

Yup, me neither. When I saw dimvii coment last night I thought that he was being sarcastic. What I see in that video it's a fast car with a fast driver. I've saw the Fiesta, 208 and DS3 cars with good drivers, and I don't see them runing like that. Skoda will probably be the "machine" in R5. But, eyes can be fooled and the clock it's what counts... let's see how the car do in Rally Portugal... I'm going to see it first hahaha :P
