That's pretty much a 5th of all cars that have actually run.

It's utterly dismal. VW must know by now why this is happening.

Edit: it's completely new built too. This is its first ever competitive outing.

Polo R5 fires: VW has found the cause

Ironically, the Polo R5 Sebastien Loeb Racing brought the realization: Cédric Althaus noticed during the Rally du Chablais flaming flames and stopped in time his vehicle. In contrast to the previous Polo R5, which fell victim to the flames, Volkswagen engineers were then able to intensively investigate the Polo R5 and found that the problems caused by the rollover valve on the tank.

This valve is integrated into the tank breather to prevent fuel leakage at high cornering speeds, refueling or in the event of a rollover. However, if the valve does not properly vent the tank, it expands due to overpressure. This, in combination with the waste heat from the exhaust, can lead to a deformation of the tank cover. This may result in contact with the cardan shaft and the exhaust system and then damage to the tank system.

Because there were no problems with the valve during the development of the Polo R5, the engineers of Volkswagen Motorsport suspect that there is a connection with the introduction of the new FIA fuel, which has been coming from Total since the beginning of the year.

To tackle the problems, Volkswagen Motorsport will reinforce the tank cover in the area of the cardan shaft and exhaust system with a steel support and optimize thermal insulation. The tank ventilation system is revised to reliably regulate a possible overpressure. In addition, the distance between the central exhaust system and fuel tank is increased.

Test the new parts on Sunday

On Sunday, ex-WRC2 World Champion Pontus Tidemand will test out the changes on gravel tracks in southern France and Polo R5 sire Gerard Jan de Jongh will then set off in person to Sardinia to help the unsettled clientele at the next WRC event. "We are in constant communication with our customers and it is clear: safety first," said VW Motorsport Director Sven Smeets.

It is unclear whether de Jongh gets anything to do in Sardinia at all. Among other things, Albert von Thurn and Taxis renounced after the recent incidents on the use of the Polo R5 and attacks instead to the Skoda Fabia R5. Other drivers have similar thoughts. Ex-European champion Kajetan Kajetanowicz wants to decide by the weekend whether he will refrain from using the Polo R5 as well.

Really interesting article. Sounds like some of it is build quality issues but also some of it must be design issues. How did this not show up in testing? They did lots of kms so were they not testing on a good variety of roads, or were their testing processes wrong? Pretty surprising for a team which had been so successful in WRC.

They already identified the problem and already new parts (similar to Skoda ones:) were tested during the week, should be tested tomorrow in official VWMOSP car. Seems it solves the problem. Veiby will drive Ypres with a Hyundai i20 R5.

“I really enjoyed Rally Ypres last year, it is for sure something special! It’s a great atmosphere at the rally, which you need to experience, it’s just incredible,” says Ole Christian, who was caught out last year on the Friday night. His 21st place did not reflect his performance, as the Norwegian competed under Rally2 regulations on Saturday morning incurring penalty time. This year, he will certainly not underestimate the stages.

“Before I competed at Ypres for the first time last year, I knew it was a very tricky rally, which you need tons of experience from to perform. It's fast, and most important, stay away from the gruelling ditches. "

Ole Christian will drive a Hyundai for the occasion, while defending his chances in the World Championship with a Volkswagen Polo R5. He emphasizes that it is a one-off opportunity.

“Our main challenge this year is to win events at WRC2 with the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5, and we will do Rally Italia Sardegna this week. But when this chance to drive a Hyundai i20 Coupe R5 suddenly became an option, I had to do it. "It will be very interesting to try out the car, and it is also a pleasure to drive the amazing Ypres stages again," concludes Veiby.

The colours of Hyundai will be further defended by Dutchman Martin van Iersel and moreover by Tom Cave, the leader in the British Rally Championship.

Nothing unusual about the jump so I suppose some part was already damaged or again quality control issues with build or components.

Several Polos completed Sweden without such problems after jumps so in this case it can’t be a design fault.

After having registered numerous fires in different units of the Polo GTi R5, Volkswagen Motorsport reacted with a series of technical improvements, which are now finally available to all customers.

To validate these changes, the German manufacturer's staff traveled 650 km by land to the south of France, where Pontus Tidemand rehearsed at the wheel of a Polo R5. Unlike the first development tests of 2018, in which fuel was used by the firm Panta, this time, the Volkswagen was provided with the same Total fuel that is usually used in the WRC.

It should be recalled that Volkswagen had recognized that the change of fuel had stripped a design problem on its Polo GTi R5, which ended up causing the fires.

In the past Rally of Sardinia, Ole Christian Veiby was the only one who competed with a Volkswagen Polo R5 and was also the only one who could have the modifications to avoid fires. Despite the very high temperatures of this rally, the Norwegian could reach the end of the event, which was the end point for the validation phase of these new improvements in the fuel system.

This update, as Volkswagen announced a few days after the Rally of Portugal, includes a fuel tank booster, changes in the cell's ventilation and greater insulation in the exhaust system assembly, so it stays farther from the tank .

This improvement has been made available to customers free of charge. The Polo R5 already delivered previously will be modified very soon, while the units that were sold recently, have already brought the update included.

This weekend, there will be up to nine units of the Polo GTi R5 that will have these new developments. Five of them will be in Belgium for the Ypres Rally and the remaining four will be in Poland for the European Rally Championship (ERC).

In Ypres you need to use control fuel of British or Belgian Champs, and Belgian is Carless, UK not sure but almost sure not Total. So maybe during tests it was only part of development for VW to check modifications.

Didn't at an stage look like it turned in as well as the Fabia. As with previous generation, the front/rear pivot looked higher than Fabia and Polo making it sometimes look like it was running out of suspension travel on the front after big landings.

This would then appear to compromise the speed that the jumps could be taken.

Looks like there's a lot of work to do.

Anyway VP Racing is used by M-Sport in the ERC-Junior R2 cars (I believe that it's the case for Cais, Torn and Franceschi) and by many private users of both the R5 and R2 cars. AFAIK most of the Fiestas R5 here in CZ have been running the VP Racing fuels already for years.

I agree with Mirek about looking under-powered and to me the chassis looks quite narrow for the body.

Mirek

I'm pretty sure they use the maximum allowed width 1820 mm.

The difference is that the new stock Fiesta is wider then the previous one or Fabia so the bodykit doesn't add that much.

Not sure about the longevity of the 1 litre Ford engine in a road car as they've had quite a few blow up and ramping up the turbo and Ford's penny pinching approach is a volatile mix. For competition with short life before a rebuild I'm sure it makes perfect sense to have the engine as light as possible and of course easier to sell the eco cred of a 3 cylinder...

Hmm, as far as I know the issues with Ford EcoBoost are not the case of one litre but more of the 1.5 four cylinder. The one litre has been AFAIK pretty reliable engine.

Ford has big problems. Especially with R5 car. MW wants money from his drivers. Then he can´t get proper drivers maybe doing some better result, with still a car that hasn´t the speed.
Main point is for sure car isn´t good enough. Not yet.
MW had chances to gain better results if money wasn´t his most important goal. Now he could loose all, when Skoda and VW selling the more R5´s...

The main point is just that the car is not good. A driver like Camilli or Suninen should be good enough to be on pace with any R5. This was proved by Breen, who won rallies with the old Fiesta and even with the Hyundai. Drivers with less experience have won WRC2 with Fabias and Polos (and old Fiestas).

When a private team or driver decides to buy a new car, they aren't today relying only on marketing talk. They can watch videos and read results, they know what the cars can do. It's not down to magic tricks.

On the other hand I had a rather long talk about the Fiesta with an engineer from one of the potential customer and this guy was honestly shocked how bad the car appeared so far. As everyone he expected it to be much better than what it has shown so far. And it was not only about the stage times or the drivers but also about the dreadful appearance in Finland and Estonia where the car looked like it was all just an initial testing.

Yes, I also think that the Polo is the fastest R5 now. There is still some work on the reliability though.

Anders Grøndal did the first test with his new fiesta R5 mk2 today, ready for this weekends rally Grimstad on tarmac

That's a nice oldschool livery on Grondal's new Fiesta R5:

There are 9 other R5 cars on the entry list, so there will be a chance to compare the car against other competitors (but, apart from Veiby and Larsen, their names tell me nothing):

Good luck to the new Ford!
