FRI 15:35 - SS7: NEUVILLE
19.6sec slower than Ogier - and Neuville blames an overly cautious approach. "The stage was okay but to be honest my pace notes had too much snow and ice. The road was cleaner that I expected. I dropped too much."

FRI 15:34 - SS7: OGIER THROUGH
His time is 21m17.8s and he looks exhausted. "It's definitely a hard job to drive with the slush now. I do what I can, but in very wet snow it is incredibly slippery and I was aquaplaning. We did what we could. We made some small adjustments in service - the car feels better."

Third quickest so far. "I'm pleased. This was the first stage today when I was focused only on the driving. No other issues. I'm really pleased with the car - it has lots of performance and a lot of potential."

FRI 15:38 - SS7: SORDO

Agree completely... this kind of coverage was mooted as 'the future' a while ago. Looks like it will naturally evolve through spectators taking it into their own hands. Could be great for the sport.

No offense but that Fiesta WRC17 with the the DMack tires is really not a gift. Mikkelsen will not regress driving the skoda for 1 season, enjoying himself and winning rallyes. And next season for sure he will have a competitive 17' car.
If he was to drive the fiesta, im sure he would loose it and get more frustrated and annoyed than anything else.

dimviii
20th January 2017, 14:51
For now, Thierry is alone in his rally, it really rolls very well, admitted Sébastien Ogier on the microphone of Olivier Gaspard, the special envoy of the RTBF. It is a race by elimination for now, but with so little rolling with this car, it would have taken a miracle to be comfortable right away. We have small problems of trust with the car, especially at the front end, but for now, we are on the provisional podium, so we have no complaints. There are things to improve in the settings. "

We should build an internet app where we gather all those camera (they could give their position) in a map and users can pick their spot from the app or set up a sort of automation that will make them watch passes of the same drivers browsing automatically from the first camera to the others in the stage.

We could make them pay a little amount and divide money with people who film. We all could be rich and happy.
Maybe in 20 years Wrc plus will invent something like this.

Pacewise - Neuville and Ogier only I think. Tänak is doing a solid job and is well faster than the rest, but Ogier's pace is on par with Neuville's. Without his mistake he would be shadowing Neuville. But then again Neuville had some trouble with the mechanical.

Rally2 are after regular.

What an exciting rally! Thoroughly enjoying Latvala's performance, as well as the possibility that for the first time in four years we will have a new championship leader, and a genuine title race.

the only real disappointment so far is sordo, i think his time has run out and after this year he should just disappear into nothingness. Everything else was expected.
Tbf his steady approach might come in handy for the manufactures championship for Hyundai. They really have to deliver one of the titles this year considering the budget they've had since they joined the wrc, and Paddon can't be trusted to finish rallies regular yet. He's not one of the quickest drivers by any stretch, but he's even worse on these changeable conditions

Pacewise - Neuville and Ogier only I think. Tänak is doing a solid job and is well faster than the rest, but Ogier's pace is on par with Neuville's. Without his mistake he would be shadowing Neuville. But then again Neuville had some trouble with the mechanical.

http://www.ewrc-results.com/leg.php?e=35143&s=122954&leg=2&t=Rallye-Automobile-de-Monte-Carlo-2017

if you take away Ogier's ditch and Tänak's downshifting problems then those 3 leading drivers were basically the same. Okay Neuville would be ahead because he had some kind of problems too in SS7

somehow neuville gives the feeling that he is relax and in control, like he is not driving 110% to stay in the lead and can go faster if required. Very mature drive so far. Rally is still long though.
Same for Tanak, hope he scores a good podium to give him a confidence boost to start the season with new co pilote.

I was too careful. I have not dared to go faster, truly trusting the information provided by our openers. But with the changes of conditions, I lost too much time, clearly Finally, in the last special of the day, the next one, I stuck in a pin, it was a bit at low speed, when I restarted, I was deprived of power for 500 meters. : The car is still young, when it is restarted, there are some manipulations to make! Obviously, here, something had jumped, we had to rectify the shot, and it worked. It's a shame, because we're losing ten seconds! "
"This afternoon, conditions were much more difficult than in the morning," said the Monte Carlo leader. "This morning, it was quite constant, with a lot of ice and snow. There was a lot of "slush", there were big traps, and the terrain had evolved a lot since the opening of the openers. By taking risks, there was way to go fast, but I did not dare to take Kris Meeke, Hayden Paddon and Juho Hanninen, we're only three ahead of Sébastien Ogier and Ott Tanak. It's pretty tight, and I think we're all three on A big rhythm, while being pleased. "

Luckily I am working in Bremen in this week and tomorrow, allone in Hotelroom, buy some beer and enjoy :)
I am just looking the forecast for Sunday. It is likely that there will be huge snowstorm in Turini and heavy rain in lower parts. It is still too far but 15-20 cm of fresh snow overnight (Saturday/Sunday) is a possibility

As usual, your information is very appreciated. Let's see if it doesn't happen the same as in 2014... Thank you!
P.S. Any update is welcome... :)

The unfortunate circumstances that occurred yesterday, the first day of the Rally of Monte Carlo, where a person has died, unfortunately has been an Asturian, Jesus Ordonez Fernandez, of San Miguel de la Barreda (Siero), a great fan of Car racing and a magnificent photographer.
Jesus, present in most of the races held in Asturias and abroad, has been a regular participant in the Photography Contest of Infomotor for many years, winning the XVII edition, even in the 2016 edition that still has not delivered the trophies . From this means of communication we want to make to his family our feeling of pain and of pain by this loss, that surely will be the one of all the fans to the sporting motor sport Asturian.

WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP
M-Sport Ford WRC squad won't give Ogier and Tanak team orders
By David Evans
@davidevansrally
Published on Friday January 20th 2017

Sebastien Ogier and his M-Sport team-mate Ott Tanak will be allowed to fight to the finish of the Monte Carlo Rally, according to team principal Malcolm Wilson.

Ogier and Tanak ended the rally's first full day split by just three tenths of a second in second and third places.

Reigning World Rally champion Ogier gained considerably on Tanak on Friday's final stages as he recovered from a morning error, but there had been little to choose between their pace for much of the day.

Wilson insisted he wanted the scrap to continue and would not ask either to back off.

"That's why we're here and that's why the fans are here," he said.

"We want to see the fight. We want to see them both out there fighting on the limit.

"There's a long way to go in some very tricky conditions, but yes they are both free to battle it out."

The Ford Fiesta WRC pair are 45s behind leader Thierry Neuville, but despite that gap Ogier admits he has not given up a fourth straight Monte win.

"Nothing is impossible, especially with the [potential for different] tyre choices tomorrow," he said.

"A gap of 45s - even if it's Monte Carlo - it's better to have this than be behind.

"I will focus on myself and try to drive well and get comfortable in the car.

"At the end of the day I would be happy to be in Monte Carlo with a podium and I don't want risk it all for victory.

"Monte is special and, especially for all the guys here, I want to give my best."

Tanak plans to try to ignore Ogier's times and focus on his own pace.

"He's close to home, so maybe he knows some tricks here," said the Estonian.

"The plan is still not to get in the fight. I want to carry on with the speed we have.

"Seb was really fast this afternoon and I was nowhere close to him.

"I'll let these two guys [Neuville and Ogier] fight and let's see how it goes."

Leader Neuville said he felt relatively comfortable with his advantage.

"I wouldn't say I'm confident, but I am a bit more comfortable," he said.

"I feel good in the car and we have had good feedback and everything has worked well so far.

"I have a 45s lead, which is a lot, but also not much on this rally.

"It will be a tough fight tomorrow, but let's see who has upper hand in the evening."

Really good stuff but I know he could have added some more strong passes from some of the places.

Impressed with RB TV coverage. Hope they keep it up!

Question, who is the guy that commentates the stages (that's been around forever) and who is the one that says the standings? Are any of them the infamous John Desborough?

Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk

The first guy is Paul King & the second is the infamous John Desborough with the annoying man from dungannon

Totally agree that this incident is used to make sure spectator safety is improved and educated so the chances of this happening again are reduced as far as is possible.

Don't close the clip after Meeke's pictures - there's heavy brakings over mixed surface. Brought me shivers behind the pc, imagine what it was live.

In Estonian press Tänak is also saying he won't go to fight with ogier and he didn't give everything today. He is surprised that everything is going so well

He has serious pace, that's why he's doing so well. I think it's mature of him to just focus on himself, the season is young and but a podium here will be a nice start. Don't risk that.

Just need to get rid of him from the live tv stages now !

Red bull tv program ok, but too focused on the few top drivers. Why not make it longer and add wrc2 etc.

But the thing I did not understand, is what a rally expert Mark Webber is supposed to be?

Would have been nice if they made some different onboard and other sections with drivers on RedBull since it's exactly the same apart from the bits in between, but no time for it i guess.

I am watching it now and some of the commentary is a bit awkward, as if the commentator can't decide between simple recapitulation of events and pretend "live" commentary. There are day 2 highlights cut together, and he talk over the footage like "at the beginning of the day, Meeke was doing well, blah blah blah, and as you can see, he is quick, OH NO, HE IS DRIFTING AND CRASHING, this could be end for him!"

I mean wtf, everyone knows it's just a prerecorded footage commented on afterwards, the guy doesn't have to pretend what a suprise for him it was seeing the crash.:-o

Never really liked the gambling nature of this event, no conclusions can be drawn about anything.

Season starts in Mexico.

No, wrong. Season starts in Sweden. If you can´t match snow and ice you´re nothing as a rallydriver.
its always the same bullshit. in monte its the conditions, in sweden its the snow, mexico the high altitude, finland the jumps, ...

if you want to become champion, the season starts in monte.

Red Bull should've made their own programme showing some different sections and own commentary rather than the standard one. Just some before and after chat doesnt cut it.

Its not about who is going to be champion, its about to see which car performs better and who of the drivers is the fastest or how they evolve.

In monte the situation is shit, its either who picks the proper tyres or who is brave/stupid enough to push on icy sections

Yeah I can see why people wouldn't like it, but I think it works. I've always preferred Paul King's well done faux surprise to John Desborough awkwardly setting you up for an incident. That might just be because I prefer Paul King full stop though...

I really like the voice and style of the guy who last year did the voiceovers for review videos on Elfyn Evans You Tube channel (which somewhat ridiculously had more coverage than the official BRC channel...): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pHizFzDiXg IIRC this guy was the BBC's Rally commentator in the late 90's, though I don't know his name unfortunately.

Anyway, I'm going off topic...

Aside from the tragic incident on Thursday obviously, the rally has been great so far. I don't know how I could follow a rally without this thread/forum, so thanks all!

My first Monte ... really amazing, a dream coming true.

Very sad for the death of a rally fan and independently from the circumstances of this tragic accident, we need really as fans to help the organisers ensure the security, I've seen very stupid things.

This problem is not new, but it is nonetheless a cancer that needs to be removed. It started with Paul "PK" King, doing excruciating "live" commentary over pre-recorded footage, much as you describe. At best it is embarrassing, at worst, it is, well, just total shit. In my opinion, it stems from having commentators who have no real knowledge or understanding of the sport, who lack a basic grasp of when, where and how rallies are won and lost, and are therefore unable to recognize the patterns or rhythms of each event, instead just talking shite about "Oh no! He's drifting!". It's really tragic stuff.

I liked the redbuul show, yes a bit to much focus on the top drivers thats true.
But last year they had the rights to do something whit wrc, then we saw nothing. Now this is very good for starters i think.
Also, Webber was anounced as comantator, wilson was expert. I find it good they let someone like Webber get a taste of WRC, think he is really in to rallying after this weekend.

We are at around 2 km from the start of ss9, the road is absolutely dry, the temperature is around 3°. Looking forward to this beautiful day for rallying, personally I think that Ogier can take some time out of Neuville. Let's hope that Tanak can keep his pace too and set some decent times through the stages.
