We’re leading in the Rallye du Var in overall after the first three stages. The final stage was challenging and pretty scary at times.

We tried to push on SS3 in dry areas but we still drove carefully because this stage was entirely new for us. However, most of the road was so wet that the car was aquaplaning even in a straight line, and we were trying not to risk. There was heavy fog with almost zero visibility in some areas. In general, this evening was very tough for us.

We were pleased to have unexpectedly found the right settings, as we’ve had problems during the tests before the rally. It had snowed in France, so we urgently had to relocate to Italy, where the roads were not similar to those of the Rallye du Var neither by surface nor by configuration. Moreover, while the tests took place on dry tarmac it rained heavily during the race.

Regardless of that, we managed to get the settings right during the Thursday shakedown. Also, we were using the new Michelin MW tires, and they did well in those conditions. We certainly didn’t expect such a result after the first day!

tyres is the main reason, wrc tyres are not for plenty of rain, thats why Loeb talked about aquaplaning, while all r5 run proper rain tyres.

The size of WRC and R5 tyres is the same and I doubt there is any rule in France preventing WRC cars using same tyres as R5 cars.

its not about preventing, its just Loeb uses the wrc tyre, which is the same pattern as the dry tyre as he would use at Corsica for example.
r5 cars use a full wet tyre.Thats what they said Loeb and Gryazin.

Can't see how there was anything preventing Loeb to put on full wet tire, just like many cars did last year in Spain.
If he choose not to it's something else.

I was told that the weather is getting crazy and that there is a risk of cancelation for the whole leg tomorrow. Now they are said to pack the service tents due to the strong wind.

Indeed one of the stages is already cancelled(SS5) :(
But SS4 is running at least for the VHC...

Damned weather ;(

Well, the very first special stage of the Rallye National Hivernal du Dévoluy turned into trouble right away. We started the SS1 very carefully. We had a good grip on the first two corners, and on the third, our car aquaplaned unexpectedly, and we lost control over it. We were fighting for it until the very end, using all snowbanks and small trees, but we ended up off the road, and hit a large tree, where our car got stuck without a chance of getting out on its own. Such a shame, really.

Rallye Saint Baume: the (surprisingly) leader until 8th stage Romain Dumas on Porsche 911 GT3!! The question arises to me: were all other R5 drivers such crap drivers (I do not know their national scene) that Dumas (who of course is a Top 911 driver) took the advantage of this fact?
What was later the reason of Dumas retairement?

Yes, the level wasn't very good. Mostly local gentlemen drivers, doing 2-3 events per season. Usually when they enter Rallye du Var, they fight around 25-30 place overall.

This was only D2 championship, which mostly nobody does except a few other gentlemen not that fast.

And do not forget that Dumas is pretty fast with its Porsche. Last year in Lyon Charbonnières he was usually in Top 10.

He retired for mechanical purpose (a gasket).

Three Citroens C3 R5 are leading Rally Le Touquet after 8 stages - Quentin Gilbert leads William Wagner and Yoann Bonato - and they are all faster than Eric Brunson and his Ford Fiesta WRC.

Not sure if it was such a Yuppi idea, considering the health situation in France…anyway, top 3 figth was really intense yesterday but Gilbert lost the lead on this morning first stage and is currently P5 while Wagner crashed at the end of the loop, leaving Bonato at ease in the front. Bruson is second and behind him Giordano, Franceschi and Gilbert will be fighting for P3.

On the list the A110 is entered as RGT. According to https://www.rallye-sport.fr/es1-touquet-2020/ Robert broke a drive shaft on SS1 but he’s back today under Rally2. Delecour is the best 2wd since the begining, being over 2s/km slower that the best R5’s on Touquet tricky stages.

Considering it's wet and muddy the times of Delecour with the Alpine are really good. He's four minutes faster than Guigou as the leading FWD. In such conditions R-GT often had problems to beat even R2 cars. The Alpine is clearly way faster.

Back from Rallye du Mont Blanc, great event, fantastic place to be! First time I visited this event and the region, already keen on going back some day.

Great surprise to see the Alpine being so fast! The car lacks a bit of sound, but they're real rockets, it's crazy to see how fast they are, how late they can brake and what speed they can carry in the corners. Also a huge advantage compared to a Porsche GT3, they can really dive in all the cuts that R5 cars are taking.

First time to see the new 208 Rally4 and the Clio Rally5. The 208 Rally4 are proper rally cars, everything looks just right on it. The new Clio is clearly a cheaper car, the engine is far less powerful (I think also less powerful than a Fiesta R2T for example). The chassis seems to work well, only downside seem to be the brakes, we've seen many drivers overheating brakes, also a lot of occasions where the rear wheels blocked during braking. Of course you need to keep in mind this rally is one of the most demanding for the brakes.

Best Rally5 car from Renault came home in 34th place in total, best Rally4 came home @ 21st place. Both very good results!
The Rally5 Clio har 180 hp, and the R2T had 195, and the rally4 has 210 as far as I know. Rally 4 har more options to adjust in the undertray, Rally5 uses almost standard springs/dampers.
Imressive debut by the Clio in my opinion.

To put things in perspective, it's Munster's 5th gravel rally with a 4WD (R5) car. He had two punctures (lost roughly 35s on one stage with it), two overshoots at junctions, stalled the engine once, and he's leading by 17,8s advance. I expected him to be fast, but this is stunning, and very promising for the future... :)

I expected him to be fast, but this is stunning, and very promising for the future... :)

With 2WD car he was average, but he is surprising me this year with R5. In Rome and also Liepaja he showed really good performance. And also result on Monte was not bad.

Today Grégoire Munster managed to extend his lead and won by 47s over Jean-Baptiste Franceschi. It is the first time since 2013 a foreign driver won a French gravel round. Very strong, considering his limited experience and knowing the speed of Franceschi, who was faster than Fourmaux in the previous round. Durbec and Al-Attiyah (both Polo R5) finished 3rd and 4th.

Next French gravel round had to be Rallye Terre des Cardabelles, but it's cancelled due to the coronavirus. Then there's the Terre du Vaucluse in November, that round is not cancelled yet...

Rallye Coeur de France is running at the moment. Seems like it will be a very nice battle for the win. The Alpine GTs are less competitive than they were in Rallye du Mont Blanc. The stages in Coeur de France have a lot more slow junctions (somewhat similar to Rallye le Touquet), so GT cars lose more due to the lack of traction compared to 4WD cars.

Entry list for Rallye du Touquet is out, for the postponed version.
36 R5 cars with 5 more on the waiting list. Gryazin (Polo), Bonato, Ciamin, Franceschi (C3), Gilbert (Fiesta) are the main contenders.

Nice to see Delecour (Alpine) and mainly Panizzi (i20 R5) on the starting list!

Also worth noting, 47 Clio Rally5 entered! This is the last round of the 2020 French trophy and at the same time the first round of the 2021 trophy.

I will be there (as a codriver) in a Clio as well to prepare the Belgian Trophy. Let's hope everything can run mid April!

Interesting events at Terre d'Occitanie. Such a shame Manu Gascou had to retire, it was a nice throwback to see a 207 S2000 take the fight to the R5s. :)
In the end, the favourite Consani retired as well, and Benjamin Clemencon won in a Sarrazin Motorsport i20 R5 in front of Léo Rossel and JM Manzagol. Féraud with the C4 WRC ended up 5th. Volant Peugeot was won by Mathieu Franceschi, with over 2 minute lead. Quentin Ribaud won the Clio Trophy.

Very wet conditions for the first cars and a drying road (Gascou was 20th on the road) made him leading after day 1. But still a good result!
Consani damaged his car on a jump, Rossel lost 2min with an off on SS2 so should have won without that.
Mathieu Franceschi was amazing with even a 4th time overall, he wasa 8th overall after day 1.

Let's not forget that the kitcar is lighter than current R5 cars, it weighs just 960kg. Also the stages in Mont Blanc are very well suited for cars with less traction (see also the times of Cédric Robert in the Alpine). Anyway, still amazing performance from Mr. Loeb. It's an old, delicate car to drive. In the first stages I was a bit disappointed when seeing him, thought it would be more spectacular. But towards the end of the rally it was clear he was really pushing it! Amazing to see. Delecour (also 306 Kitcar) and Panizzi (Hyundai R5) were visibly a bit rusted compared to the others. Panizzi himself admitted he couldn't find the rhythm and was afraid to make a mistake, he said he even didn't really enjoy driving, which is a shame.

I was at the Mont Blanc to spectate for the 2nd year in a row. Amazing region, beautiful stages, and a great entry list including the ultra-competitive French trophies. If any rally enthusiast ever goes to the French Alps, try to combine it with a visit to this rally, you will not regret it. Just take some good walking shoes and a lot of courage for some long and steep walks.

Hi, does this part of the forum still have some persons with knowledge from rallies in Provence region? Checking the routes of some known rallies in Var and Bouches-du-Rhône region from rally-maps.com, it can't be left unnoticed that e.g. in Rallye du Var or Rallye de la Sainte Baume SSs has been mainly using the same roads from year to year. Would there be any other potential roads available that have been used in these rallies earlier on in the history? Last bigger difference found in the rally-maps.com is, that 2002 on Rallye de la Sainte Baume there has been SS using D141 between Cassis and La Ciotat, and 1992 on Rallye du Var there has been SS using D2816 south from Six-Fours-Les-Plages. Also it seems that many rallies on Var region has suffered from bad weather year after year, which is a pity of course.

vino_93
6th October 2021, 08:11
Yes, Var is a bit extreme when talking to weather. Burning in summer, heavy rain in autumn.

Are you looking for potential stages for Motorsport Games ? :)
There was a rallye in Brignoles in the 90's too, but I don't know the stages. Same for a rallye in Sainte-Maxime. There was an event in Plan-de-la-Tour, which should have been relocated to Gonfaron this year. Stopped in 2012 after a fatal accident, should have been back this year (but Covid...).

One thing is with type of stages (in national championship you are usually doing same stages for every year and character of stages is similar on every race in that country, in ERC each rally is different) and most probably also level of competition (especially drivers who are able to be fast everywhere, not only at home). But also Yoann is able to be fast on some events.

Question to the French rally fans. Would like to do one tarmac and one gravel rally this year. Distance wise Terre du Langres and Rallye Vosges - Grand-Est would be my pick. But especially withe Langres I feel like I would be better off going further south? Are these 2 nice enough or should I look at other rallies?

br21
30th March 2022, 13:34
In my opinion there are nicer rallies than Langres, but they are also way further south.
Just think twice if you will really enjoy driving French gravel event - only one recce pass and in the rally car. For me those rallies are great, teach French drivers doing good pacenote, but for many gentleman drivers this was an issue preventing them from fully enjoying the event.

I can only recommend the French Gravel rallies. As a competitor and as a spectator. I really like Langres, it aren't the most beautifull stages, but it's always a lot of fun. Certainly if you have a cup there (Clio or Stellantis). This year, the Clio's will be there and with 33 cars for the first round, it seems to be a success :)

Also, it's like holliday going there. The rally starts around noon and the weather is mostly nice.

For asphalt I've neither participated nor spectated in Vosges, but must be a good rally with nice stages. Stellantis Cup is going there.

If you want to know anything more, contact me in DM :)

Nikolay Gryazin Announced At Dévoluy!

It's a list of madness preparing for the next National Rally of Dévoluy! Indeed the information has just been confirmed this morning and it is Nikolay Gryazin who is announced at the start of the Rally with the brand new Skoda Fabia Rally 2.

He will naturally be present to prepare for the future Monté Carlo 2023. Moreover, the organizers are not making a secret of it!

In fact it is the TokSport team which will be present because in addition, Sami Pajari should also be there in view of the publication.

Great news for the French tarmac championship, Hugo Margaillan will be back next year, still with CHL and Citroën support !
He did a very good first season. Started a bit far of the bests in Touquet, but really improved a lot. I'm sure he can win his first round next season.

As far as I know, this year in French championship both Bonato and Margaillan were with C3 by CHL, but only Margaillan had Citroen support.

Margaillan had Citroen support as he won the Stellantis Cup in 2021.
Next year, Leo Rossel will also have the same backing as 2022 Stellantis champion

Many news for 2024 french championship!! :D

The most surprising is Sarrazin Motorsport which switch from VW Polo to Ford Fiesta Rally2(in partnership with M-Sport)and three cars will run on tarmac championship with Jean-Baptiste Franceschi, Sarah Rumeaux and Réhane Gany

In the same time, Sarah will run the entire gravel championship with the Fiesta too, as she wants to improve on this type of terrain ;)

The most recent news is Yoann Bonato, tarmac champion, who had to switch from CHL Sport Auto to a total new team, Trajectus Motorsport, created by the 24H of Le Mans triple winner Benoît Tréluyer :)

Tréluyer is good friend to Bonato, but the main reason the new team accepted to enter rally world was because Citroën Racing gave them the "green light" and will give the the latest spec. C3 Rally2 ;)

Note CHL Sport Auto should also engage one or two Hyundaï Rally2 in the tarmac championship...

Despite having lost the "WRC2 market"(to belgian DG Motorsport), PH Sport will have four C3 Rally2 on tarmac championship this year, for Léo Rossel, Anthony Fotia(winner of the 2023 Stellantis Cup), Swiss Jonathan Hirschi and Olivier Giroux...

Rumours about Hugo Margaillan in the CHL Sport Auto Hyundaï and Eric Camilli in the same car but with 2C Compétition...
