Let's hope Poland dropped.
Why? It's a large country with a strong motorsport tradition, large fan base, growing economy and growing car market. Also growing importance in European politics.
Abu Dhabi in!!!
Is that a joke?

Given that the 14th event this year was hugely reluctant, there's nothing to say that there will be 14 in 2017. Especially with the development and cost of the new cars.
Wouldn't surprise me to see 13 next year.
I reckon Italy, Poland, Corsica and maybe Spain would be on the chopping block.

"What I'm going to say is not politically correct, but this is rallying. This is not a circuit. You must be prepared, as a driver, for unexpected things."
Is this genius the same who talked nonsense on Bertelli's issue last year?

NZ will only come through in 2018, if you don't belive me, hear the podcast from Sardegna. Abu Dhabi, I hope your'e wrong and what's wrong with Corsica?? with a bit of practice they can make it good again.

Corsica was a bit failiure last year with extreme floods, very small number of spectators (expensive for them as well), quite ok number of entrants but very expensive to take part for bigger teams. I remember that one team compared that total costs were very similar to Mexico (including long trip)! I think they have the biggest risk to loose their round. Poland is good location, big market and it is between north, east south and west, so quite easy to reach for everyone. And prices are also very good:)

Don't understand some people have a go on Sardegna,Poland, Corsica or Catalunya. It's the same every year and those are some of good if not best rallies in calendar. What's wrong with Sardegna? All teams go there many times a year for testing, same as Catalunya, rallies are great, easy access to interesting spots, no extra cost for rally passes. Guess those complaining never been to those rallies.

When people talk about dropping Sardinia or Corsica it's not that they personally dislike the rally. The promoter prefers rallies on the mainland because of easier access and costs. The number of spectators on the island rallies is comparatively low to mainland rallies.
In the end they have to strike a balance between the traditional rallies and new rallies with financial interests. The world and context changes so the sport has to adapt, the only question is how well it does that so we have good rallies in the future.

I got that but forum members are not promoters to complain especially most of them don't go there so rallies could be hold on the Moon or sun from this point of view. Sardinia is always very popular and crowded, cost wise cheaper than Wales or Sweden, logistic is far easier than Monte Carlo.

Clearly the UK is an Island too, when it comes to spectators on Wales Rally GB. In Sardinia there's a relatively large crowd, but still small enough to keep it more or less under control, both on and outside the stages. I wonder if they could organize a WRC event on mainland Italy without big issues regarding safety or traffic...

I would have thought the biggest issue for Rally d'Italia moving to the mainland is whether the money is actually there for an event to be run as WRC.

It's a pretty damning statement if a proposed mainland WRC Italian round can't get a sponsor. Personally, Sanremo should always be the Italian WRC round - but they can't even get in the ERC.

I quite like it. Safari is not realistic though. New Zealand not Australia (or both if Oz moves back to Perth). USA or Canada for a winter rally just after Sweden would be good.

My proposal to the motorsort council would be;
Monte, classic / herritage
Sweden, snow is always nice / classic.
Ireland, rally culture / nice stage's-views / extra asfalt round is welcome.
Argentina, South America has to be in.
Portugal, (Porto region) rally culture / big crowds.
Greece, Acropolis belongs in WRC
Finland, classic / herritage
Germany, proper asfalt rally
Japan, belongs in WRC
New Zealand, best stages in the world.
Wales, classic / herritage
Italy, (Sardenga) spectator friendly / nice stage's
Spain, mixed event / classic.
I would also like to see an extra snow rally, in Canada would be great.
And i would let some events rotate year after year. Corsica can swap place whit Sardinia, New Zealand - Australia, Argentinia - Mexico, Japan - China,...

As the article says, he's forgotten about 2012 when VW tested extensively with both a VW Polo and the Fabia S2000. And did the full WRC with VW run Skoda Fabia S2000s - has any new team been so thoroughly prepared for a WRC debut??

About Rally no. http://www.fia.com/news/fia-announces-world-motor-sport-council-decisions-2
They have said that they wont (at this time) go down the super license route. But want to make an individual assessment of drivers allowed to drive 2017-cars.
This will off course be about 3rd and 4th drivers.
Will be interesting to see what happens in 18 and further on. 17 machinery is at one time going to be the cars privateers want to run, and its very unlikely M-Sport will continue to make 16 cars.
A Privateer Cup wont have longevity if they dont think of how they could introduce the 17 cars in to this. It could be done with different restrictor and passive diff?
But this is really only a M-Sport problem, because neither VW, Hyundai, Citroën or Toyota are likely to sell of WRC cars, and have done so until now only in very rear circumstances.
So the question is: What will Henning Solberg be allowed to drive?
He is not an official M-Sport WRC driver, he will not enter R5, and he would most possibly like to continoue in WRC after 2017.

Having the drivers of four full manufacturer teams, plus M-Sport, I dont think there is really an issue for the fans in 2017. Compared to when we only had Ford & Citroen in the WRC just a few years ago, next year will have a great entry in terms of WRC numbers.
The issue for M-Sport will be financial in terms if selling/running additional 2017 WRC cars. But given their success with Fiesta R5 sales, they should still be able to continue.

"To provide the opportunity for more drivers to be nominated, from 2017 a Manufacturer will not be required to nominate the first driver in its team. Nominations will however still be required by the closing date of entries for each event."
Can anyone give an example of how this rule will make any difference at all to what we see next year?

For example, this year Hyundai has nominated Sordo as first driver. That means that on at least 10 rallies he must be in the main team alongside Paddon, Neuville or whoever they want. Without this rule you could have Paddon+Neuville on more than 4 rallies in the main team.
In reality this will not change much for next year for the current teams because they have stable driver line-ups and in case of force majeur (injuries for example) they are allowed to substitute the nominated driver anyway.
The only team that could benefit more is Toyota if they will have many drivers that they want to alternate.

This is what I mean. Due to the stable lineups it doesn't really make any difference. It just means Hyundai don't need to make a controversial decision.
But does this ruling now effectively rule out three-car teams for next year?

Specifically, told Rallye-Magazin, Adamo has acknowledged that the Korean company is waiting for the decision of the FIA about the new regulations for Turbo R2, which are gradually replacing previous models with atmospheric thrusters. Citroën is another brand that is expected to follow the path marked by M-Sport while the Ford Fiesta 1.0 turbo engine R2T.
What has ruled the sporting career chief client Hyundai-section is not expected to have a car category R1 as all current models in the catalog of the firm are too large to fit into it.
We know that the FIA wants to change the rules so that these cars are cheaper. We now expect a firm decision. The worst thing would invest money and resources in one thing suddenly changes. Typically R2 is expected to be equipped by small turbo engines in the future. It seems the future of all manufacturers.

Next season will be on the role more seats available on factory equipment. Most official teams seems to be decided on the alignment of three units of World Rally Cars in 2017 each test, at least all but M-Sport has not been spoken about. This results in at least be 14 seats, something that has caused some young pilots have been launched with the intention to give its jump from WRC2.
One of them is the proper Elfyn Evans. Relegated this season to the second category by Malcolm Wilson detriment of Eric Camilli (which has started to leave and some quality samples that saw in him the owner of M-Sport) and after a meteoric start in WRC2 with the Ford Fiesta Evo R5, in which even some came to demand his return to the WRC, misfortune and punctures he has lost the advantage he had in front of the general. Still, it remains first in the World Cup category and also is a leader in the British Rally Championship after his victory in Scotland this past weekend.
Although Motorsport News confirmed that Malcolm Wilson has plans to retain Evans in M-Sport, the Welshman has also not ruled out the possibility of abandoning the current discipline with the goal of returning to sitting in a World Rally Car. Maybe the only possibility of having a place in the team Cumbria (hard to think that they will have three Ford Fiesta RS WRC17 official) would exit Mads Ostberg, as in the case of Camilli his contract is for two seasons. As long as it is not fulfilled the cherished dream of the return of Thierry Neuville ... As for Evans, and appeared on the long list of future Toyota.
I'm working hard to secure a future in a World Rally Car. I'm not interested in repeating another year doing what I am currently doing. Driving the R5 is not helping me grow now. I did the last two years was fantastic, but this is not giving me enough experience to compete at the highest level. I can take the next step.

so, no such a rule that teams will be with 3 cars then?
so, no such a rule that teams will be with 3 cars then?
Don't know about the rule, have it really been mentioned anywhere? It would be great of course. This season last four rallies the 25 manu points for victory has gone to the number 2 teams of VW and Hyundai which is ridiculous.
And if the rumour says 2 drivers full time, that doesn't mean there can't be 3 cars full time. And anyway if I remember correctly, for example Subaru used most of the time only two cars in 2002-2003.

More than one will have caught off guard Yves Matton statements in an interview with the French half AUTOhebdo, which ensures that Citroen will have only two official units next season. The first is for Kris Meeke, who is under contract until 2018, while the second is being shuffled between different names, including the two young pilots of the signing of the two chevrons that competed last weekend in Poland Stéphane Lefebvre and Craig Breen.
The Belgian has made it clear that there will be rotations in the second seat for the 2017 season and therefore the pilot elected accompany Kris Meeke driving the second Citroen C3 WRC during the calendar full. A list that has long been rumored that could also be Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo.
I am looking for a second driver for 2017. I have no obligation to impose or Stéphane Craig, the only instruction is to do the best possible given their current level and experience. They have to show what they are capable. It will be a unique second pilot, who I will choose between candidates who can potentially come into my plans. Today I have not decided, however, some of them have already been discarded. In July plans for the next three years will be defined, then I begin to negotiate with the drivers that give the profile.
And the truth is that at no time Citroen said it was to have three cars, which themselves have brands like Toyota or Hyundai (Volkswagen also expected to hold). Matton remarks that the only option for Citroën had a third unit would be for the training of young pilots, something that is not necessary today because the WRC lacks them.
We maintain commitment of two cars. I am against an agreement requiring the use of three cars and invest more money in pilots. The only interest of a third car would be the training of young people. But one of the biggest drawbacks of the WRC is to have more seats than high-level drivers. First you have to solve this problem. On development, we will soon have a second model to advance the evolution in asphalt. There is no assessment point between the new and current WRC, but the car rolled into the same sections to compare specific points such as easy to drive. Bengué is unavailable due to injury, but is expected back in the car at the end of the month. We have remade the simulator and we are ready to extend our contract with the FIA another year in the JWRC.

Like the article says - rumoured guys are Neuville and Sordo - both of which have I think indicated they would like to stay at Hyundai. Not a huge amount of choice for Citroen to be honest? Same issue Tommi has.
Disappointing to see they will only have two cars given they have refocused on WRC. But if they have a longer-term commitment then that extra car could come in. Maybe the young driver negativity is a reference to them losing both Ogier and Neuville having helped to develop them within PSA?

Pretty crazy to read in Motorsport News today that the WRC might be moving to a control tyre.
It's under discussion and the decision is to be made by WRC Promoter in a month. This is despite neither Dmack or Michelin asking for it. Not even Capito supports it.
After the great Dmack-related storylines last weekend it's yet more lunacy from the people in charge.

Also in MN - Teemu Suninen being heavily linked to Citroen next year.
Quotes from Timo Jouhki: With the development and progression he has been doing, he is ready for the World Rally Car next year and I'm pretty sure I can get him in. Citroen is the preferred option. Next one is either Hyundai or Tommi, and M-Sport is the last one."
Pretty crazy that Jouhki would openly rank the teams like that in public. Signs he is very confident I think. Bad news for Lefebvre/Breen when coupled with the news they'll just have two cars.

Two young Japanese drivers supported by Toyota and being trained by the team of four-time World Rally Champion Tommi Mäkinen will compete on the next round of the FIA European Rally Championship.
Takamoto Katsuta (aged 23) and Hiroki Arai (22) are being nurtured under the Toyota Gazoo Racing Challenge Program with Tommi Mäkinen Racing, which will operate Toyota’s World Rally Championship team when it returns to the top level of the sport in 2017.
The pair recently made a step up in their development by moving from R4-specification Subaru Impreza WRX STIs to Ford Fiesta R5s in the Finnish championship, and for their second starts in the cars they will make ERC debuts on auto24 Rally Estonia on 15-17 July.
The high-speed gravel rally will be seen as ideal preparation for the famous Rally Finland, which follows two weeks later.
When the decision was made earlier this year to promote the pair to the R5 category, Mäkinen said: “I’m happy to report that Katsuta and Arai have progressed markedly compared to when they started the program. They still need more experience as rally drivers, but in coaching them over the last ten months, I’m convinced that they have the potential for further growth. The instructor team is going to be doing everything it can to maximize their abilities and skills.”
Arai has rallying in the blood, as his father is former Subaru WRC and ERC ace Toshi Arai. Katsuta on the other hand started out in karting and single-seater racing, finishing second in the Japanese Formula 3 Championship with Toyota in 2013 before landing a place on the marque’s rally scheme. The pair are co-driven by experienced navigators Glenn MacNeall and Daniel Barritt.

Maybe it depends where you live, here in NZ the WRC has the highest profile its had in years (thanks largely to Hayden Paddon). Still nothing compared to rugby or cricket, but every WRC round does make it onto mainstream sports news to some extent.
I don't think RX does have a higher profile either to be honest - most casually interested people I know (the sort who will see the occasional news article or highlights on tv but not be following times and updates during events or discussing it on forums) know what rallying and WRC is, but if I mentioned rallycross they'd say 'whats that?'

Yeah when I was in NZ back in April Paddon's win made the evening news - pretty sure that didn't happen when Meeke got his first win. I caught Portugal RX at a perfectly sociable time mid week too.
What do my fellow brits think? Since 2003 I think WRC coverage/exposure has been on a decline and probably troughed - most likely because there's no longer a McRae or Burns about which to get excited.
RX on the other hand has live coverage, and very good coverage too, at the same sort of time on a Sunday that people will happily watch an F1 Grand Procession. Sustain that promotion for a few years and petrolheads that aren't necessarily RX fans will be converted - I personally didn't get it until this year and have totally been convinced it's worrh making sure I watch every race weekend.

The sad reality is that WRC is relatively unknown to majority of the public. RX is as known as cross-country skiing. Those who know it, know it. Others got no idea.
Is there any hard data available about the viewership of RX?

World RX has grown the rallycross profile greatly, but it was starting from pretty much zero.
But I doubt there are very many 'big' rallycross fans compared to WRC/rally fans.
I watched World RX quite avidly in 2014 & 2015 but my interest has already faded.
WRC has soooo much more to it ... RX is so basic in comparison and just doesnt have the depth. The 2016 RX Season is not holding my attention any more.

You can compare YouTube views I suppose. Even though WRX is made for this kind of thing, and the promotors invest heavily in social media, their videos only attract a few thousand viewers. There are users on this forum who have more YouTube subscribers...
Rallycross already has the star power with Loeb, Solberg, Ekström and Block. I think this moment right now will be seen as the height of driver quality in Rallycross. I don't see how they can grow much above this. They can bring the sport to more countries thus widening the fanbase, but I don't see them deepening the fanbase in the traditional countries.

Well, as they say: That escalated quickly :)
Ogier is the benchmark, it would be very sad if he decided to quit.
And as I have written earlier, in this case Capito acts as a hand puppet for Ogier, and I am quite sure that the moment Ogier understands that he has no chance of beating all of Loebs records, there is a big chance of him quitting.
He basically has nothing left to prove except that. And I also fully understand his frustration on the two-day-sweeping rule. All tough he still will be champion, he is in it to win it - and by that I mean EVERY rally - and he doesnt see that that very same rule is the same advantage on tarmac, as it is a disadvantage on gravel. Because he doesnt need an advantage on tarmac to win, but he needs a lesser disadvantage on gravel.
But, no matter how it turns out, 2017 will still be an incredible rally season!

Colin McRae (above) completed a hat-trick at the Greek classic in a Ford Focus RS after winning in Argentina and Cyprus. He shrugged off the disadvantage of starting first for two days on slippery gravel, while Richard Burns slowed at the end of each leg to ensure cleaner roads and better grip for the following day. Burns’ tactics failed and McRae led from the end of the opening leg to win by 49sec from Petter Solberg.

Wouldn't it be funny if the rules changed to 3-day-sweep and Citroen built the best car, but Meeke couldn't win because of unfair rules?

In My opinion solution is very simple: Championship order first day and reverse top15 for following 2 days....this will give small disadvantage to the leader of the champ without preclude him possibility to fight for the win; more will give also more interest to Live stages on tv of saturday that will have already reverse order (same for us following split times in live) and same on sunday.
I don't see really bad points using this system....i don't understand as their don't do it. If i'm blind and in real you guys see some bad points in my proposal...i'm open to discuss:)

Guys in short. Ogier is Better than any driver at the current WRC list. and to be honest One driver winning every rally doesn't make it Exiting. not knowing who will win this race is quite good for the sport. reality is Ogier is the Fastest no driver can challenge Ogier in the same conditions. so i think they should keep this rule, so we can have some good racing. and let the Best one Win.

Here is a suggestion which is based on the New Zealand Rally Championship start order
Leg One: Drivers will be seeded by:
(1) At Round 1 (Rallye Monte Carlo) only, the first five (5) start order positions will be reserved for competitors placed in the first five (5) of the previous years Championship and will be seeded on merit. These first five (5) competitors will select their road position:
(a) The highest seeded Driver shall select a start order first from the five (5) positions available, then
(b) The next highest seeded Driver shall select a start order from the remaining available positions, and so in descending order until the five (5) positions are selected.
(2) At subsequent Rounds, the start order shall be determined at the Pre-Start ceremony as follows:
(a) The first five (5) start order positions shall be made up of the five (5) competitors ranked highest in the Championship at the start of each Round. These first five (5) competitors will select their road position:
(i) The highest ranked Driver shall select a start order first from the five (5) positions available, then
(ii) The next highest ranked Driver shall select a start order from the remaining available positions, and so on in descending order until the five (5) positions are selected.
(b) The remainder of the field shall then be seeded as a group on merit.
For subsequent Legs of all rounds: Drivers will be seeded by:
(3) The highest placed competitor in the event will be seeded first on the road followed by the remainder of the field seeded based on their results from the previous Leg/s.
The alternative would be to reverse seed the WRC field for the subsequent legs but that would have to be consistent for both gravel and tarmac events

Really don't see why they are making it such a big drama about the running order rules. Simplest and easiest way is to just run the championship leader as the 1st car on the first day of events. Then reverse order for day 2 and that pathetic excuse of a 3rd "day".
With the way rallies are nowadays that means the championship leader is only at a huge disadvantage for basically 3 or 4 full stages before the 2nd pass in the afternoon (although I accept the lines will be a bit off considering all the lesser cars/drivers passing through too).
The fairest way is the qualifying like we had a few years ago, but I didn't really feel like that had much place in the sport. Just a personal opinion due to the fact that since I've followed the WRC in the last 15yrs or so, the championship leader has mostly been the first car off the start line.
Hate the current rules.

Reverse order always seems a bit illogical to me - in a point-to-point race with cars starting together the car leading the event would always be the first on the road. Reversing the running order with the intention of giving the leading cars more of an advantage than they already have (on some dry gravel rallies) seems quite contrived. I'm not sure why you think it would add interest to live stages?
I can see the sense in only running Championship order for day 1, but I'd prefer they use rally leaderboard order for the rest of the event instead of playing reverse order games.
Qualifying stages have some merit, but as far as I remember they always used very short stages for qualifying, which can give an advantage to some drivers who are better at short stages over drivers who do better on longer stages.
Of course there is also the point that whatever road position is an advantage on loose dry gravel is a disadvantage on wet tarmac with mud being dragged onto the road, or where there is hanging dust, or roads getting more rough and rocky with each car...

Day 2: Rally order (let's try for a season and see how they work this out with no split times)
Day 3: Reverse top 10/15 order (TV-focused throwaway leg/who cares)
Anyone with an amazing road position and speed on day one gets penalised on day two. Anyone who gets banged with road sweeping on day one should have a better position on day two. In theory it should even out. Then reverse order gives a level playing field if we get a final day shoot-out. You also don't need a degree in mathematics to understand it.

Suggested rally start order. Monte Carlo - start seedings from previous year's WRC, and day finishing order.
Round 2 -Day 1 - Marble from hat from Championship order for first 10 WRC cars. (Might mix things up get younger drivers directly behind Ogier etc to learn his lines and braking points.)
Day 2 - Marble from hat for first 10 on order of day 1 stage times.
Day 3 - Run on order after day2
or alternatively run 3 high hp 0 ,00 , 000 cars through to remove gravel/ snow before stage start..

The zero cars have a job to do, so that would require additional cars to run though. I'm not sure where they would come from. The lines that Ogier takes are different to most other drivers, therefore there is no clearing done until lots of cars have gone through.

This has a lot of merit, but it was tried a while back? even without splits it may throw up some silly go slow tactics?. I still like the shootout after Shakedown, was always a great start to the rally, although it needs to a representative stage, non micky-mouse or tarmac on a gravel rally.

Yeah it was the slowing tactics and teams' over manipulation that killed it before. But like I said there are no splits nowadays and so drivers wouldn't know whether others had backed off or pushed on. And you'd never get the case where a co-driver is counting down a driver into the finish. It would be gambling and guesswork.
That's why I said for a season it might be interesting to see. They were doing all this stuff in the late nineties/early 2000s which is seen as one of the golden periods of the sport. So I think it's worth another look.

I think it is time for the organiser to impose a ticket for the whole event, not something retarded like the british and their bogey times but something that will be both cheap for everyone to follow but also to bring some much needed funds to the organisers. I would say 20 euros for all three days including service park access and the SSS or 5 euros per day without access to service and the SSS. they can have 5 euro tickets for the SSS (for all the times that is going to run) and just the service for each day.

Well, there was Richard Balint who I've often seen on interesting places (try to google WRC face to face, he made some yearbooks which were really nice). He knew how to make and edit great photos, for me he was probably the best WRC photographer. Anyone who knows what happened to him? It seems like he stopped last year, I think a year after he started working together with André Lavadinho...
But I do agree that many of the professional photographers have no clue about rallying, and that's not just about picking the places to shoot their photos. I've been standing next to plenty of WRC photographers, some do like to talk as if they know everything and have all inside info (that inside info often comes from inside their own head I think). Once I was next to one who didn't understand that 208 (R2) and DS3 (R3) are not the same category... A few years ago I was a bit envious against those WRC photographers, travelling the world and having one of the greatest jobs. But during last years I've seen enough. Travelling with 4 in one car, all going to the same media point together (usually to end up with similar photos), then discussing where to go to eat (obviously where it's for free, at some media lounge of a WRC team, or where it's very cheap, like some mc donalds) all 4 together... If the job would properly pay for them, they obviously wouldn't all travel together and compromise in terms of photo quality and own comfort.

The worst thing is that they do not seem to be passionate about the sport itself, they do not do any recce of the stages they are going to visit, probably to keep the cost low, i doubt they earn a living if they are not affiliated with an agency like Giggigallino1 who is affiliated with a VERY WELL KNOWN ONE and he is the big boss in there.
Its a pity because their post processing is trully phenomenal at least on a few of them, but this is rallying, i want to see action not mountains, sunsets and flowers and abandoned houses and tanks (since germany is closing by). Maybe its because the turned a hobby into a job and got fed up with it.

beautiful shots artistically but the guy is clueless at choosing a spot, will anyone remember the photo of tanak between the confetti in a years time ? let alone 10.
They are not rally photographers, they are wedding photographers who like to travel.

I think this is a problem also for other professional around WRC. Starting with the misterious people behind WRC+ and the ones behind live coverage and so on.
I think only the radio guys are a bit involved in what they are talking about (even if they can improve as well).

the WRC+ guys and the TV guys are a disgrace as employees... they deserve to be on the dole, it is a cruel thing to say and i would never say such a thing for anyone on a serious note, but these guys are just the reincarnation of incopmetence.

The radio guys are like civil servants for the WRC, the service they provide is needed (especially the end stage interviews) but the way they do it is unattractive and boring, i stopped listening around 5-6 years ago maybe more i cannot remember since the only reason was the end stage interviews but since we get these through rally-base now there is no need for that ear pollution.

Just as a side note. Maybe this photo/video talk should be split from the News & Rumours thread?
I agree that most people filming professionally rallying are pretty useless at it. It's like everyone can film something, yet only a few are capable of creating films with stunning cinematography. I haven't filmed any rally since 2014 Finland - the rally where last of my gear got destroyed. So instead filming I spent the time spectating and guiding my friend, who was completely rookie at filming rallies, tho he had decent filming experience.
It took 2 days to get the shot to look nice and we didn't even get to discussing what spots are best for filming as I was busy attempting to kill my second GoPro and taking 360 photos on film.
I go on and on about TV as that's my field of work, but the short answer is that there really aren't many rally fans who could make the step to the pro level. So in a way it's a lose-lose scenario. One thing I liked in the McMaster article was that local and national events are good practice grounds. Practice makes perfect or what's the saying.

we had a german guy Darkstar many years back i think but he disappeared (check youtube his work was amazing), amateur filmographers like KKS, bunnings and rallymedia.nl should be hired as advisors to the WRC TV crews.

I think this is a bit too harsh. I guess I know what you mean to say. Me for example, I would like to listen to some proper analysis of what is going on during the rally by highly competent people but still I think they are more competent than other collegues on other fields and at least you can see/listen they care about the sport and actually like it.

So I'm trying to make complete sense of the main WRC story in Motorsport News today. The main point is that there will not be any kind of separate championship or cup for 2016 machinery next year.
First quote kind of threw me off. Jarno Mahonen: "We want to encourage privateer drivers to come in the current (2017) cars."
But I thought that no privateers would be allowed to run 2017 machinery next year? It seems that is not the case. It seems that instead privateer entries must be sanctioned by the governing body, the same way the drivers must now be. So I take that to mean that in theory someone like PH Sport could run a team in 2017 with new cars, IF there were enough cars to go around.
It seems that the FIA have still not made any kind of decision on how exactly to run the 2016 cars. But there's no way they can be banned until after 2018. So we will certainly see them in some capacity. "We cant stop privateers from using these current cars."
They just seem very concerned about negatively impacting R5. Mahonen speaks about this. But for me it's just the next step on the ladder, not something that will take interest away from R5.

Also the control tyre is not happening in 2017 - confirmed by the FIA. But Dmack are still asking for clarity on what is happening for 2018. McCormack is saying they have 'significant investment coming and big plans for the future'. So understandably don't want to do that if they will be forced out in 2018. They have no interest in tendering to be control tyre supplier.
Mahonen admits the reason for looking at a control tyre is financially motivated, and also giving them greater control over the type of tyre/grip available.
All I would say to that is get back in your box Jarmo!

What is the big deal with 'what will the privateers drive in 2017' ? None of them can compete against the main WRC teams anyway.
If they can afford a 2017 WRC the likes of Prokop, Bertelli, Solberg etc still wont be competitive.
They should just enjoy their 2016 cars and unofficially compete with each other (as they do now).

It's a safety "issue" they say, don't think any of the privateers are more accident prone than any other really, more the other way around when you don't have to care so much about the car. When was the last time Prokop had a big crash...?

This is where the confusion lies because it hasn't been clearly communicated by the FIA - likely because they had no idea what they were doing.
I don't think anyone has ever actually said: Martin Prokop, Solberg, Bertelli etc - you can't drive a 2017 WRC car. That's just something that has been assumed due to lack of proper regs or information. Really I think the FIA just don't want some young teenager or some old dentist to be able to drive a 2017 car. They've made a rule that they don't really understand or know how to enforce. Creating a problem where there wasn't one.

HyundaiN?
Who will decide which are factory teams?
What is the difference between DMackWRT and FuckmatieWRT as a team?
Both are run by M-Sport.
For me it´s more than OK that there will be old and new WRC´s competing

There was never a plan to ban private-run 2017 WRC cars. FIA's plan was to restrict the drivers who are allowed to drive those cars. Tänak, Prokop, Solberg and even Bertelli are actually good drivers, so no problem for them to get the cars. FIA just doesn't want people like Al-Qassimi(s), Al-Rajhi, and Eurolamp Mini drivers to have them. Though it's not sure whether there will be enough 2017s for privateers in less than six months.

well most pro photographers have no clue about the sport
I think this doesn't just apply to rally...
I am also a fan of ballet dancing (yes, really), and the filming of ballet is just as bad. They cut to headshots during intricate footwork, they do close-ups when they need to show the flow of dancers across the stage, they edit at 8 second intervals rather than when one move finishes and another starts. The closest thing I've seen to good filming of dance is amateur parkour videos on Youtube, because that's filmed by people who appreciate the subject.
I think that professional photographers/videographers are people with no particular interst in the subject. They'll be on a rally today, a tennis match tomorrow, a wedding next weekend, tins of soup in dramatic lighting for an ad agency after that... And their editors are the same, so nobody tells them they're doing anything wrong.
The only think I can think of that might improve things is for groups of enthusiasts to get together and deposit stills/video into an editing pool. [Which does happen sometimes, I think.]
