A quick look at both WTCC and WRC calendars and Loeb is free of WTCC duties on almost all rallys except 2 or three, so we might see him more than once this year.

Latvala, Meeke, Mikkelsen - very poor performance. Ogi can take wrong tyres for a whole day and still beat them. Hopefully the quitter showed up to add a litle spice.

#WRC SS2 @SebastienLoeb 14:14.7 "It was OK. Very dirty with gravel and mud in every corner. A good run."

SS2 Ogier "I have done a wrong tyre choice on the first stage, the snow tyre was the good choice in the first stage, not this stage.

Maestro no excuses.

he drove tarmac stages like gravel one. See SD videos. At every corner - wide sliding.

As a circuit driver he must learn how to driver on gravel, he is still learning even on the asphalt Rallies, we should encourage him.....

Little chance for Loeb to stay in front. Stages will be very wet due to melting snow, so many cars before Loeb will destroy tarmac for him.
But his performace so far is the best. There was no better result possible after these 2 stages!

SS2: Kubica spins
He gets his Fiesta RS to the finish control with the loss of around four minutes. "We spun, and when we were in reverse we lost the lights and the alternator I think. First I lost all lights then the car was switching on and off. We managed to reset it and get going - which is the main thing - but we lost a lot of time."

I can see that Kubica is stopped just before highway... very far behind others. seems like over for him for today.

Tomorrow stages are held in slightly more north and higher elevations. However, last snowfall was not so strong there. But, due to higher elevation, the temperature should be below zero on most parts of the stages. So, new day, new conditions again.

Now I know why Loeb was so fast on SS1. Kubica cut through all the snow-piles and Loeb had much more straight road... ;-) Kubica-s car just didnt survied it..

depents on right/wrong tyre choices also.Till evening just 2 stages were with part of them with snow.
If no snow for sure Ogier has advantage with clear road.

dimviii
23rd January 2015, 00:04
Sections of full snow remain on high altitude stages - especially Stage 12 from Sisteron and Stage 14 which features the famous 1600m Col de Turini. Snow is also reported on tonight's opening stage from Norante.

“When you go high the snow never really clears,” explained VW team manager Sven Smeets. “Otherwise there are still some parts where there is snow and ice. On some roads they’ve put down salt, but depending on the amount they’ve put down it can still freeze overnight.”

Weather forecasts predict more inconsistent conditions over the next few days. “There’s not too much snow expected this weekend, but we always have a line in our forecast that reads ‘things can change,’” added Smeets.

“Last year, like many teams we were a little surprised by the snow that fell on the first stages. We will have to see what happens, and we can only really forecast about six hours ahead, but I think conditions will be quite similar to last year. There is not a massive amount of snow, and Turini is not a metre deep - it wasn’t last year either - but we had really wintry conditions during the rally itself."

Hahahahaha epic, i am really bored with this nose end first things all the time.one question ,i have read a lot of things about tyre choices between two sebs.in the radio i think i heard for the first stage they had same tyres, but some said they had different choices.can somebody tell me for sure what happened.i think we should open a thread for tyres for this rally, monitoring and recording tyres of the drivers for each stage.i think this will help us a lot.moderators what do you say?forumers do you agree with this proposal?

N.O.T
23rd January 2015, 01:33
Ogier said he had the wrong choice for the first stage and the correct for the second... so he had different tyres from Loeb.

ss1

Ogier: Almost full ice everywhere. Quite little grip, but we try to start very carefully, not so much risk for us in this one. Not an easy one to start the rally. No doubt that you need studs.

ss2 Loeb: It was ok, but a lot of gravel everywhere on the corner, gravel and mud everywhere so it was difficult. I had a good tyre choice for the first stage but it wasn't the best for the second. I passed two cars in there - I'm not sure who they were.

Ogier: I am happy to be at the finish, the stage was difficult and I was surprised about the time of the first stage. I am first on the road and it is very difficult to drive like this. I have done a wrong tyre choice on the first stage, the snow tyre was the good choice in the first stage, not this stage.

a thread just for tyres is useless...

So no nose end first on stage 2 ??

LOL...

Yes, quit a bit actually ;)
But You are of the understanding that The Rally Monte Carlo is decided by tire choices and starting orders alone, and could just as well be decided on a computer. I am not.
There where a lot of people on this forum that had written off both Loeb and Citroën, but rallying is different, and thankfully still very driver dependent - thats why I love the sport.

Because the difference in starting order Ogier and Loeb will have two different tasks during most of this rally, the difference decided by the changes in condition as the cars go by. But the difficulties will be at a maximum. Comparing the two of them will therefore be difficult, but we could say that both of them is off to good starts.

But the fact that Loeb could win 9 consecutive championships whit out more drivers picking up on his way of driving is for me mind boggling, and thats why I keep pestering on about Nose End First.
In other sports, if one athlete came in with a new technique and beat everybody else, people would start copying and improving, but not in rallying - and very seldom in motorsports.

Its only in Moto GP where I have witnessed top riders discussing how they change their riding styles after the best rider, and try to improve on that. Now its Marc Marquez in the front, and the legend Rossi is open about adjusting his riding style to "copy" Marquez. And You know what, its all about Nose End First in Moto GP too.

But motorsport is off course very seldom talent driven. Its driven by money. So its very seldom that talents get the backing to reach all the way to the top. Loeb did, Ogier did, even Walter Röhrl did, and there You have three drivers that could win the Monte Carlo, and also beat circuit racers on their home turf.
Motorsport is also very seldom trained in a professional manner. In other, cheaper sports, the elements are taken apart and practiced one by one, and often one practices completely different sports, movements etc, to improve certain parts, this is very rare in motorsport.

The concieved "truth" in motorsport is that You have to start gokarting at the age of 7 months, and drive karts all day every day until You move up to the formula or class You are going to compete in. Even in rallying this is believed to be the right way. But the best drivers we have had, have not done this at all, and still people believe this gokart/youth-truth.
For me, the part of Ogier and Loeb and Röhrl is important, because it shows that money is not the only factor, and it shows that motorsport - or driving technique - can be trained and exercised, and it need not cost a fortune. This should inspire.

But I will tell You that it is very difficult to not spread the message when You have seen the light. Because being aware of the aspects of driving technique, improves the spectating by a huge margin, and I want others to experience that as well - even You N.O.T. But Nose End First being knowledge based, maybe its to much of a struggle for You, and then its easier to shoot the messenger than actually bothering to read the message ;)

On SS1 icy conditions so everybody most at same. Maybe a bit more snow to end runners.
SS2 wet conditions and above zero temp, everybody cuts and road is more dirty after every car.
Tyre choise for Ogier and Loeb are same, 4 studds ( but no info what be in a boot)

Both Bouffier and Serderidis (crashed in same place) not restarting because they arrived at parc fermé too late. Their cars were pulled out only at 3 O'Clock in the night! So regulations do allow Rally2, but it seems like the organizer can still decide a little...

Looks like at SS2 was dry conditions! well, at least where it was filmed.

Seems that road maintenance has improved a lot in france and they have managed to almost clean all the mountain roads as well. But there is still the fact that there are two sno-piles on both sides of roads, it is melting a bit during the day and it freezes overnight. Ok, They are putting some extra salt on the road as well and that decreases the temperature where ythe ice is forming. For the morning, it looks like the temperature is even a bit less that melting temperature with extra salt, so pure tarmac pon the lower parts, black ice on the climbs, decend and shade and snow on the top.
So, Ss3, First part is running in the forest (5km) and it is climbing from 840m to 1220meters, then there is open section for two km, followed by one km section in the forrest and in the northern slope of the mountain, should be very tricky. Another open section 1.5km long, followeed by western expposed mountain side with forrest. Final km-s are partly in forest and partly in open filed. Final corners are in northern exposed forrest again. Should be very variable stage

So, bluuford (http://www.motorsportforums.com/member.php?13319-bluuford), frontrunners have an advantage

bluuford
23rd January 2015, 09:47
Ss4 is running in lower elevation, starting from around 1100 m decending to around 900m, but the it i run (most of the stage) in a very narrow valley with limited sunlight exposure. Final section was a little climb again but this stage in general has less forrest around it.

SS5 is the highest stage of the day. It is starting from aroiund 1100m and climbs accross 1550m. So, Snow and ice should be there definitely. Moreover. There is plenty of forrest as well. I hope they have enough studs left for this stage. Otherwise, there might be huge timeloss. I belive this will be the key stage of today.

So, bluuford (http://www.motorsportforums.com/member.php?13319-bluuford), frontrunners have an advantage

I guess so. The character of the road looks like it has a lot of potential for cutting and bringing all kind of stuff on the road (snow, gravel etc.). Maybe there might be slight advantage on the last stage.
