Really enjoyed listening to wrc+ this weekend. Stage end interviews were MILES better than they've been in a long-long time.
Ostberg + Becs are a great combo. Ostberg has the knowledge and a little bit of banter here and there with Becs made it a real pleasure to listen to.
Wish there was someone else in the booth with Julian commentating the power stage.
I don't know the name of the other guy but he seems to be a bit out if it for me.

Reducing Heli and transmitting plane costs?
Today I think you can do comms coveage with a large drone or remotely controlled helicopters.
That will reduce cost a lot.
With new satcom providers cost of that will come down. Needed bandwith will maybe be a brakepad on spacex satcom in the beginning.
but a lot of new solutions that would be interested in being part of WRC could be utilized.

If we had 3 or 4 retirements among WRC cars then we would have seen 3 or 4 WRC2 cars make it into the Live TV stage coverage. Low attrition level is good thig but it has a negative consequence in reduced coverage of support fields

Also we had Bertelli, Tuohino and two Hyundai 2C cars. Katsuta and Loubet are doing full seasons. There were 13 WRC cars starting the event.

One thing is what is shown on allive. But usually you got a 2-3 min part with WRC2/3 in daily highlights and sometimes even own vid.
So far from Arctic there is exactly nothing about WRC2/3 in any of these and no vids.

I wish they had more camera's on the forest, like at the jump where several photographers went as gets a bit monotone watching the highlights these days when It's pretty much all the same footage as you saw on All Live, with arches and banners covering half of the corner like on the last stage.
I'm wondering if having no pace notes on wrc+ onboards is something the drivers chose since we have them on all live?
Positively surprised that WRC+ offered a three-month extended WRC+ subscription free of charge without asking due to the last year´s Covid-19 situation and staying their client all the time. During this year I had only one-month subscription at a time.

Was the fine given for the swearing just after the finish line, or for the post PS interview, if there was one?
A lot is said btw drivers and co-drivers just after the finish line.
Some things regarding the stage just done, some on tactics for the next ss, or the next time a SS will be drive, on tyre chioice amd so on.
More and more drivers have started to wait with this talk, until after the cameras are turned off, not to give competitors valuable info.
Every driver/co-driver will from time to time need to ventilate their feelings after a SS, without being penalized for it.
So if the reaction Mads had right after the finish line, and not the official inteview at stage end, then I feel it is wrong. I mean that "Full of adrenaline reactions" can not be used by stewards to give a reaction, as breach of the "law".
Some will say that the coverage right after stage end goes to far into the inner life of the two people in the car.
How do you feel?

Which population group was discriminated by these comments? Were the tires offended? Perhaps the manufacturer was...? Because in that case, what they are doing is essentially censoring criticism of a corporation, which is worrying to say the least. Unless you're in favor of massive corporations regulating speech.

Julian Porter is the only competitive commentator in the WRC crew. The rest are just talking heads. They say when they see. Becs is in motorsports for like 20, 30 years? and she has no idea about technical basics. Also questions at the end of the stages are most of the time cringe and stupid AF.

Indeed, I like Julian a lot. Meeke, Östberg, Marshall were priceless additions imo. It's ok to have a talking head as you say to do the play by play commentary and ask questions on behalf of the audience to the expert. But when you put two of them together it's a disaster.
Becs is not a bad commentator but she's got to be paired with someone like Meeke or Porter. I thought she worked well with Meeke actually. PK is a good presenter/voiceover but is lost in a live commentary situation. JD i think is forcing a certain style too much and lacks actual substance, it's like he's trying to hype up for TV but it comes off as fake, at least for me.
And yeah the stage end reporters need to think a bit, sometimes they don't even ask a question...

Franky
27th June 2021, 12:22
Stage end reporting is the most difficult, in my opinion. If you've got someone feeding you information what has happened, then you've got a chance to come up with a sensible question. But sometimes it feels like the most banal question (How was the stage) is the best one as you are giving the driver freedom to reply whatever is on their mind at the end of the stage.
Regarding commenting, feels like they need a complete shakeup to their roster of regular commentators.
Fast Eddie WRC

The non-stop talking is still my big issue.
What's the point in having the audio feed from the car (co-driver reading the pace-notes) when Becs and Co. just talk over them 99% of the time ?
They should only comment when something special happens to the car/crew on screen or some news comes in. Fans know the rally situation and can see info like times and splits on the screen.

Most people can focus on both at the same time, and you can always watch the onboards later with no one talking over.
As I've mentioned, All Live can be used also as a "Radio" where you can just listen what's happening without seeing.

9/10 times when stage end reporters try with an advanced question they get "I don't understand/can't hear you". Sometimes you even wonder if drivers do it on purpose to avoid the question.
So "How was the stage?" or "What happened?' might even be best. The only interesting thing could be in asking a good follow-up question.

How about adding an own "intercom interview plug" near the door.
Drivers won't have to struggle with the helmet/HANS and won't have issues hearing questions. You could even get answers from codrivers.
Only "issue" is that they won't be able to put on sponsor caps.

Your last sentence is the reason why I don't mind them. No minders around or much time to think often results in drivers telling us what they shouldn't! Also, their comments often give us more detailed info about a stage's condition or an incident in it.

There's a couple of crappy 2 minute videos on WRCs Youtube channel now for WRC2+3. It will be interesting to see what they do when they have ERC under their wing.. it wouldn't make a lot of sense if you can get better coverage for running a 'Rally2' car in ERC than WRC2/3 so they will either have to downgrade ERC coverage or uograde WRC2/3 coverage.

Does anyone no the real reason for this? Becs gave BS explanations that changed more than the weather did; "rain clouds" "raining" "lightning" "tall trees" etc. On Sunday, commentators tried to ignore the problem because the weather was fine and there were lots of open field stages. A freeze frame actually caught Julian out once as initially he thought a car had stopped. Were they using a hang glider to bounce the signals back to the studio?

DEAR RALLY FAN
Next year you can enjoy more rally than ever before! From 2022 on, the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) will also be included in your WRC+ subscription. Together with the additional WRC event in 2022 we are giving you more hours of all live rally, onboards and highlight videos to enjoy whenever and wherever you want. Stay tune for the all-new ERC website including the 2022 calendar, live timings and everything else you need to know about the new season coming up soon.
Of course, the existing benefits of a WRC+ subscription will remain, and you can continue to watch all stages of every rally live and on demand in Full HD and on all devices together with special features like live maps, onboard action and much more rally content waiting for you in our video library.
We hereby also inform you that we need to adjust our prices for the monthly and seasonal WRC+ passes. Taking effect from 13 January 2022, the price for all new monthly passes will be €10.99 and the price for new season passes will change to €99.99. This increase is due to rising production costs and in order to keep presenting rally content at the highest possible level. But of course, your existing pass will continue to run at the old prices until the end of your current billing period (monthly/season).
If you do not agree to the new prices, we will be sorry to see you go, but you can object by sending an email to our support within 14 days. Please note to use the email address with which you are registered at WRC+.
Hope to see you around for a new and exciting rally season.

F1 direct from F1 with all the data feeds is very good value in those countries that don't have TV deals in place. €64.99 a year in Estonia, $44.99 in Africa, or ~€300 in the UK through NowTV - which is commercial TV and without the data. What's a VPN, €2-3 or so? At least WRC+ isn't recognising bullshit borders in the era of globalised arbitrage.

Some times it is painful to listen to them. So many hours they have done this job, and still most of the stage commentators, are clueless on what affects what on stages, drivingstyles and so on.
And on Ss16 they cut the bradcast after 7,5 cars, after Evans went off.
There was 30 min till next stage starts. Why stop there?
Even on Norwegian and Swedish championship events they are able to keep the end of stage interviews going on one stage until the next starts. Only voice, but that is fine!

I don't agree with that. There are commentators and analysts in other sports and topics who I could listen to (and indeed have done so, regularly) for ten hours a day with no problem at all, while some get on my nerves within seconds of hearing them start to speak. I share your opinion. To me that kind of fast moving drone footage is just restless and pointless, taking the attention away from the actual driving. In Umeå stage I was in a section where they had that drone and I was spectating more the drone than the cars. This could be though due to the fact the drone is new. I hope the drone won't hit any spectator while flying wild.

Actually, I think it was during Saturday evening stage(s) there was a shot from drone crashing into something (a farm house?) and falling down to the ground.
You could see a bit later when Breen was driving in EV mode to the closest escape road that there was a WRCTV guy doing something (fixing the drone?) in the boot of his car (also totally unawere there's a rally car coming behind him - since it had no sound in EV) :)

I understand this point as well. WRC+ needs to balance between showing what is happening and being entertaining. For example many people would like to see helmet cam, but in my opinion it's something that looks wild even on slower driving but gives little information of what is actually happening. Maybe this drone is towards entertainment, but still a nice "closer helicopter view" when done properly. Also it looks a bit like video game chase cam, which could look attracting to video game people?
ouvreur
2nd March 2022, 08:46
I'm glad they're trying something different. The same seat-obscured onboards / badly placed 'FX' cams / not-very-interesting stage-side locations had been wearing thin. The drone stuff has the potential to be really cool, especially when we get to more technical rallies, seeing the cars from a 'chase cam' position in twisty or bumpy sections will surely be more interesting than what we've got now.
In Sweden, we had both the sublime and the ridiculous. There was one tracking shot, next to the house towards the end of the powerstage (a fast right-hander over a small crest/jump) that was quite beautiful, it would be great to see more like that, a great example of what these cars can do.
Then we had the slightly tense moment where Tanak was approaching Breen's awkwardly-parked car on SS14, aaaaand... they switched to a view of the crew's faces right when they needed to be looking out of the windscreen. Totally nonsensical.

Heh, I've been talking about this already like 15 years ago (and actually did some timing in highlights, where this view was almost as used as the regular onboard view).
It's fine for 3 seconds, maybe on the start line or after crossing the finish line. But I don't understand why it is so overused, especially in important situations like you mention. Well, I've heard from a guy working for NEP that it's the producer's (dont know who he is?) decision...

Why no expert, they have more champs than Gronholm they could get in.

He raised the bar too high for them that they looked bleak in comparison. Also I’m guessing they didn’t like the fact the viewers enjoyed him more.

If you believe the rumours, the fact his father is being sued by many in the service park - including the promoter - isn't helping his cause....

From what i understand they were found not guilty in that case and Mads wasn't really involved in it, Morten and two others were.

It's ridiculous. Even Gronholm, who wouldn't consider himself the most fluent English speaker, brought a lot to the broadcast. There are so many experts that could join them and offer a worthwhile contribution.

Having to watch the live stages on the BT Sport app which runs the coverage perfectly...

I do wish the commentators would stop talking over the drivers at stage end just after the red boards.

I wish they would stop talking, period. Or at the very least bring us back the no commentary option, especially when all they have to add is:” the engine goes bebebe when it’s on the rev limiter”.

Yes!! I was trying to listen to the conversation between Craig & Paul during the stage but only got the first part after they saw the red flag and Craig asked Paul what to do.

Juha in that last stage, something like: "I couldn't be a co-driver, I don't understand pacenotes." Also brilliant, "yes, uh huh" when the drivers were talking.

If Kiri was reading this and thought fuck it, then Molly became the anchor, 100% the conversation becomes bitching about Molly before long.
Maybe some of yous need to take a rally off now and then.

Molly is really working on getting more personal experience in a rally car, even if she comes from racing. She has been a driver and a co driver, and is married to one of the best drivers in Norway.
Hopefully she will continue to drive, to become better at that, to become better as a rally journalist!

The thing that amazes me is Molly's accent, I don't think any English person would readily recognise from her accent that she isn't entirely English. The more you listen and know she's Norwegian, you can hear it in places though. Apologies if I'm wrong, but isn't it a bit of a thing with Norwegian women in particular who speak English publicly that they try hard to shed the Norwegian accent out of it, because the Solberg style, somewhat 'hurdy-gurdy' heavily accented English (which I love! :D ) isn't considered cool?
(I know her dad is English, btw)

Hmmm.
Re Mads: yes his knowledge and info are great, but he never knows when to stop talking. Like with anyone this grates after a while.
At least King & Porter have pauses to let you hear the cars go by.
Listening to two/three voices at once for hours on end is really wearing. I end up watching with no aound.
Anyone else sick of Paul King.... he's nearly as annoying now as Jon Desborough.
I have noticed so far today the commentators have been a bit less talkative (well except Desborough). Hopefully they are getting the message that we dont need constant talking and want to hear the cars and pacenotes.
It does my head in having commentators talk non-stop over the car/co-driver audio.
SHUT UP, IT'S NOT RADIO ANYMORE. :(
Quite the opposite for me. Neverliked his stage ends... his accent was too grating for the poor audio. But I like his Kitchen Table.
They need more experts on comms and at stage ends. And to finally treat WRC as a serious sport and not a bit of fun like Becs & Co.
I now find it unbearable to watch with comms and especially the 'Live TV' stages with Desbrough or King chatting shit non-stop.
Another Mr Shouty, Desborough-style. :(
Eddie, please understand I'm trying to laugh with you here else it'll look like I'm attacking you. I'm not, I think you actually agree with my point and many, many others quotes could be examples. Spending the many hours AllLive offers listening to the same people is not natural and doesn't happen elsewhere. Take a break if it grates!
I only gathered these as I had an entertaining skim through this thread because I've nothing better to do. Initially forum is praising WRC+ with a couple of live stages. Then AllLive launches, then it's mostly moaning, some about the customer and technical service, but also moaning about human beings just for existing. Just about everybody who has appeared on AllLive has had a ribbing here. The "skiing man", the "Citroen woman", the "Brazilian social media star", regulars Jon, Julian, Paul, Ben, Becs, Abi, Kiri, Molly, Colin, Mads, Kris, Marcus... comical really. Yes everyone can have their opinion but it's not always everything has to be shared - and I know I'm not immune.
If anyone deserves a praise this weekend, it was Neil Cole, it was a pleasure having him back, also Imho Paul King does a better job as a stage end reporter than a commentator.

Absolute amateur hour again at WRC+. For some reason they still struggle to start their broadcast on time so we can see the first car depart. And that was SS2, the first stage of that day. Then on SS4 suddenly the image disappears (in the middle of one of Julian's sentences) for three minutes and then comes back with no acknowledgment or explanation...? And that's not mentioning the endless connection and buffering problems the service had yesterday, which normally never happens to me as I have a very, very fast connection.

When the image suddenly goes to rotating map and you lose the audio as well, that's usually a sign of something "bad" happening. Im not talking about that situation where they just lose signal and it goes to that map all the time - you still have the commentary there. It's their "security" screen (as they are ~20 seconds ahead of the stream) which they use when they don't want to show something. It was used id Monza 2 years ago, when I think Evans crashed and there was some red thing falling down from tree on his windscreen (I think they thought he might have hit a spectator there). Another example is when Kalle crashed his Fabia R5 in Argentina (I think) few years ago and it looked like he might hit some spectators there. I know it happened also this year atleast once, but I dont remember the reason. Though in Safari, it seems that nothing happened - only thing I could think of - hey may have hit some animal, but I dont remember anyone mentioning such thing. And they even showed Kalle driving over some warthogs (atleast it looked like it - maybe they run away) few stages later.

I also got sh*t scared on that break on SS4 when first Kalle was going fast, then we got the rotating map for a while and then when the image returned Neuville was driving slowly (because he had lost power).
The last time they used that security screen was in Portugal when Suninen went off at the start of Fafe, there were spectators in that corner, but luckily no one got hit.
Once again I have inside information from the WRC+ team and I've heard it was not easy to work in Kenya, so we should cut them some slack for a bit of gremlins while most of the action was covered with no problems.

Should they be cut some slack? Because they're having to work in Kenya?
It's literally their companies decision that they're in Kenya.....
I was wondering, how come Jon Desborough has been commentating on the highlights each day for the entire rally? they used to split it between him & Paul King up until a couple of seasons ago.
