From what was going around at the SSS of Acropolis yesterday, they are definitely working on a Rally 2 Kit for the Ypsilon.

I don't want to second guess what you heard, but I don't see where Lancia can get the budget to rally a full season as a works-team.
Since that is the crucial condition to homologate the kit. You have to be there with at least 2 cars in each round. Which is incredible stupid, but it's the FIA

Yes. The current Rally1 only share a "looks somewhat like" production cars, get rid even of that last thing and you're looking at a different entity.
It's like if you are walking towards the border of another country. Step by step, you get closer and closer to the border. Eventually you take one single step that crosses the border. Then you're not able to say anymore "this is my country". No, it's not, it's another country.

It doesn't help that current rally cars are the fundamentally wrong cars for rallying now (in my oppinion).
We should be driving super cars and/or jeeps, since with them you at least have a chance to sell some cars afterwards and the respective manufacturers have more to gain.
Since what has some family car manufacturer to gain from wrc? Sell their one (if it even exists) performance model which counts for 0.000001% of sales?

I can be wrong but I'd say road relevance doesnt matter anymore, its just P.R. opportunities and ""Tax evasion"".
But regarding the CARS, I'd say that the current VIBES are weird. These tough rallies like Acropollis, Safari... seeing these hatchbacks.... Its weird. Everytime I see those Trophy Trucks or the Dakar Classes I always think "THATS AN OFF ROAD MACHINE". But they would need the WRC agility (when compared to slow moving Dakar/Baja Monsters).
And none of the WRC brans are mega interested in selling 4wd models with some nice spoilers and fake air intakes for the regular Rally fan anyway...

Take one step back from Rally1 (and away from "the border") and you have Rally2. You take more steps away from the border and you have the lower classes.
Yes, they're far away from production cars, but that's the only direction you can take steps in, since we're already at the border.

Did the Corolla, Focus, 206, Xsara WRC give you weird vibes too? They were hatchbacks as well. Even the Delta Integrale was, although it was at least on sale as 4WD.
Rally championships are on asphalt as well, imagine the huge Trophy Trucks or a Dakar Hilux in the tight, twisty Monte roads

I would pay twice the amount of WRC+ to see a Hilux Dakar Truck in Monte and even more for this:
