Good news there! Waiting for a few more splits in then will see how the sweeper/new car syndrome is to play out for us...

Ogier off to a slow start. 9.4 slower after 6 km...4th on road.

Ogier losing quite a lot of time..

G' morning fellas, long time no see... Interesting start, I have to say. Henning fastest on split 1? Snowy conditions, perhaps..

WRCfan

Latvala 27 seconds quicker than Loeb. Massive time difference because of road sweeping...

MartijnS
11th February 2011, 07:16
Latvala 27,3 seconds faster than Loeb :D

11th February 2011, 07:17
Whaaaat? Loeb must have made mistake at the end.

jonkka
11th February 2011, 07:19
Yeah, also Petter so much faster - it's gotta be a mistake from Loeb's side...

mm1
11th February 2011, 07:20
This is geting interesting. Mat 20 sec loosing to Loeb in second split, maybe he should step out of the car in the middle of the stage and hide in the Swedish woods, that would be less embarasing, than finishing behind group N cars.

Terrible time by Loeb....

Loeb is running first, i think there is a lot of snow on the road för hte first car!

WRCfan
11th February 2011, 07:23
Loeb said at the stage end there is nothing he can do but keep the car on the road. Hirvonen just in, 14 seconds faster than Latvala, Loeb is 31 seconds slower as first on the road than Hirvonen 5th or 6th on road. Big difference.

Ummmmmm, we have a problem with the, ummmmm, the power steering. It's getting, ummm, really stiff everytime we get, ummmm sideways.

11th February 2011, 07:32
Although lacking any of the body damage boasted by the other WRC drivers Matthew Wilson crosses the finish with a time of 16m26s. When asked about the stage he remarked there was 'Something wrong with power steering,' and it was '..really difficult to get any feeling with the wheel'.

Why does WRC have long way to go, who said that the time difference should be greater, than it is now. And keep in mind that road conditions change dramaticaly with each car passing, although you don`t have snow in Greece, and that could be hard to understand for you.

The WRC drivers are the same like last year BUT the top SWRC drivers are different...! So I assume, the gap is smaller. Imagine Ketoma, Hanninen, Mikkelsen or PGA driving the SWRCs now... Although, it really is a little bit too soon...

Who cares? For me the most spectacular cars were the old Gr.A Celica ST165 or Subaru Legacy and those were bloody slow compared to modern cars.

First SS reduced the number of candidates for the win to 4. Østberg, Hirvonen, Latvala, Solberg. Tomorrow and on Sunday it should be clear weather with no new snow, so running position won't matter much.

PG can't take a minute back
Loeb will loose even more and he can't take this much back on snow
Ogier is there for second time and is not quite into it yet

Too early to say perhaps... perhaps not.

Good Evening to everyone on my side of the world, good morning to everyone else.

Interesting first stage, the weather conditions are really making a difference as well as the new WRC cars. So it no wonder that there is a big mix amongst the cars.

really ? new cars are pieces of junk...well done to the ones who tried to persuade us with stupid and incoherent walls of physics and stupid numbers that the cars are going to be equal ......pffffttt....change the sport you are watching you ain't worth it.

a) cleaning the road has quite a lot to say, let's see after some "normal" stage, 2 years ago there was this rally in Norwegian championship where Østberg in Impreza was loosing 1,5 min+/stage to subaru-cup group N imprezas... oh and Bryndilsen who was the only one allowed longer studs was 30sec+ faster than other group N cars with similar drivers.
No idea what tires they are running on in swedish championship, but the road position difference is huge.

b) it doesn't matter at all to me if new WRC cars are 1s/km or 5s/km quicker than S2000/grp N or whether they are 0.5s/km or 5s/km slower than old WRC....
They are more spectacular (especially fiesta vs focus which was extremely boring to watch) and there are now more pilots fighting for the top, if they will also make it possible for very good S2000 pilots to beat slow WRC drivers then even better.

I guess faith did'nt want PG to win this rally... But anyway way to go Mads, really impressive driving!

BTW i dont like the fact that it seems to be possible for a S2000 car to win a wrc event. Sandell is 6th on one of the fastest rallys on the calendar, imagine how it could turn out on the rallies where speed is not so important. But maybe this is just the start and the 1,6 T cars will be developed into better cars that S2000 cars cant beat.

In my opinion it's just about road conditions. This can't repeat often. Do You remember how McShea with slow Proton drove in Ireland or when someone with gr.N car won icy stage in Monte Carlo in 1990'? Or this year when R1 car was 10th in stage on Monte? Normally it can't happen but sometimes the conditions make it better for late cars ;)

Any chance of a quick update? I've just checked the stage times and it seems Loeb is well down, the Fords are super quick, Sandell is in the running, Wilson is where you'd expect (but apparently has steering issues) and Block is well down.

Are there reasons for Loeb and Block being further down the order than I'd expect? Or is it just them struggling to get pace out of the new car?

Well, no. Did not remember those. But I really don't care, because I think that this is going to more stable situation from now, than those onetimers.

I don't think so. The engine of new cars has similar output as WRC around year 2000. Otherwise they are almost same as S2000. But the difference is way too big (let's say 40-50 Hp and more than 2x torque). In my opinion it's just because when You don't have a traction, You can't use more power and in that moment both S2000 and WRC really are almost equal thanks to same suspension and transmission. But that's rare situation. Anyway I don't see any problem if tourists in WRc are beaten by S2000.

In the new forum, is there a possibility to block someones comments, so I do not have to skip all his comments??

Regarding the rally and specualtion about differences in cars, I think best is to listen to drivers:
1- Most of them are saying cargo too much sideways because of the shorter wheelbase.

In fast places like Sweden i guess that IS the issue.
Both Mads and PG while faster commented they both tried to drive in thje middle of the road.

Comaprissons with S2000 are useless in such changing conditions, anyway it is very nice to see S2000 cars going so well.

I do think it is good to have S2000 close to new WRC, which is the problem?

I too, don't understand why they should be special. The last WRCars were fantastic pieces of kit - but were boring, quiet and didn't show the sport in the greatest light.
The new S1.6T WRCars maybe slower - so what, if they're louder, more of a spectacle and produce more interest - I'd say that was a good thing. They also need driving properly.....it should be noticeable who the better drivers are.

Just talked to Daniel Carlsson who is on SS5. He told me that the weather is blue sky and sunny. After all the Swedish Championship cars on the first loop some gravel is slowly starting to show up in the tracks, but conditions are still good. Maybe a little bit disadvantage for Loeb since the last cars in the Swedish field has quite a narrow wheelbase, but way less disadvantage than this morning.

Will be interesting to see! Speeds will be much higher now and if you get out of the track there will probably be no return!

Loeb seems that he pushed a bit more for this stage....
