yes thought so but how do you keep your stages safe from any illegal recce all these months from when they are announcned until the rally ?

I'm not sure how they do it, I don't think there is marshalls on the stages all of the time so there is a possibility that someone could do illegal recce

He lost almost 9 seconds on first split so I guess it was spin or stalled engine on start.

ØSTBERG M. / ANDERSSON J. "It was OK, we are pushing really hard. Absolutelly on limit, not able to go so much quicker. Couple of mistakes, but not too bad." from rally.cz

Hard for me to believe that the snow hanging in the air will stay there for two mins. Have been living the first 30 years of my life here in the north and haven't yet witnessed such a snow ever. maybe 30 secs, yes, but 2 mins no.

And if it would be Loeb being the number one and winning, you would be chanting something idiotic like "master beating the others like sick dogs without owner."

I made a bet where you need to know(quess) the top three.
I have Hirvonen to win
Ostberg to be Second

So go Loeb go. ;) :D

Hmm, I have quite a lot of experience with frost snow in the air from downhill skying and I also can't image it stays in the air for two minutes...

downhill skying i think creates far larger particles than 4 tyres with studs moving at 200 kph

N.O.T
13th February 2011, 10:21
and even if the snow/dust wasn't that bad....the fact we had 2 days of stages with full snow and now we have clear ice is again very very lucky.

Hirvonen is doing a fantastic job today since he is the fastest and would certainly be a contender even without the luck (he proved that last year when loeb admited that there was nothing he could do to catch him)....but the 2 days incapacitated the other contenders.

thats the effect of blind favouritism/nationalism does.....others do not want Loeb to win because (insert stupid reason here), others the citroens, others the fords, others the driver who is not of their nationality...facts are facts though and on this case Hirvonen win because of luck in a great extend.

Mads is doing extremely good - I am just getting more and more impressed. What a debut in a competetive car!

Then you have not any experience living in countries in the north. In "cold" countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland the snowdust can appear in the air for several minutes if its cold and no wind. Especially if its colder than -10. And today it was more than -20 in rallyarea.

Thats always been a problem in winterrallies in the nordic countires.

Hirvonen resists Ostberg for victory

Sunday, February 13th 2011, 14:48 GMT
http://cdn.images.autosport.com/editorial/1297608563.jpg

Mikko Hirvonen held off Mads Ostberg to win the first event of the World Rally Championship's new era by just six seconds after three thrilling days in Sweden, as Fords filled the podium.
The 2011 season-opener will be remembered equally for the spectacularly close competition offered by the latest generation World Rally Cars - with just 15s covering Hirvonen, Ostberg, Petter Solberg, Jari-Matti Latvala and Sebastien Ogier starting the final day - and the emergence of Ostberg as a potential winner.
In his first event in a competitive car, the former Subaru privateer opened up a half-minute lead on his first day with Stobart Ford, making the most of running 10th on the road.
The lead quintet concertinaed on Saturday as stage conditions slowed those at the head of the running order, but road position was less of a problem this morning, when Hirvonen - who had overhauled Ostberg halfway through leg two - pulled away from his pursuers.
Then on the final loop this afternoon Hirvonen found loose snow more troublesome than before and started losing time to Ostberg, who went into the deciding Gustavsfors stage just 4.9s off the leading factory Ford.
However Hirvonen had enough in hand on the 4.16km course to hold off Ostberg and claim his first win since the same event a year ago, while Ostberg secured his maiden WRC podium.
"I was fairly nervous before the last stage," Hirvonen admitted. "It's been a fantastic start by the team - a new car and victory straightaway."
Ostberg was more than happy with second despite coming so close to victory.
"It's unbelievable," he said. "Today has been difficult. We tried a little bit to catch Mikko but he was quite quick and I didn't dare to push as hard as I could. Second overall in Sweden, I'm absolutely happy with that."
After a disappointing morning today, Latvala (Ford) regained confidence and flew through the final loop, winning two of the three stages to move back into third place ahead of Ogier, who was less happy with his car following service.
Ogier claimed three extra bonus points by winning the first Power Stage - with the final stage of the event shown live on television and extra points awarded to the top three. Loeb and Latvala completed the Power Stage scorers.
In a bizarre finish to the rally, fifth-placed Solberg had to hand his car to co-driver Chris Patterson for the final road section and special stage, the Norwegian having been caught speeding by Swedish police earlier in the event. Patterson brought the car carefully through the stage to finish fifth.
World champion Sebastien Loeb never featured at the front. Running first on the road in the worst of the snow on Friday was a huge handicap, and with two punctures and a loss of power from a snow-blocked intake slowing him further, he had to settle for a lonely sixth for Citroen.
In a one-off Ford appearance paid for by a fundraising drive among fans, P-G Andersson had a weekend of incidents interspersed with stage wins, leaving him a frustrated seventh thanks to all the delays.
Kimi Raikkonen made an encouraging start to 2011 by bringing his Ice 1 Citroen to the finish in eighth. He starred on the second loop of leg two, when he set a string of top-six stage times.
Of the other WRC entries, Matthew Wilson (Stobart Ford) won a late battle with Khalid Al Qassimi (Abu Dhabi Ford) for ninth, with top-class newcomer Dennis Kuipers' FERM Ford 13th and Ken Block (Monster Ford) 14th after a weekend of building snow experience.
Henning Solberg might have been in the podium fight in the other Stobart car, but after charging up the order on Friday afternoon, he crashed out on Saturday's first stage.
Martin Semerad cruised to an easy Production class win once early lead combatants Anders Grondal and Patrik Flodin retired and were excluded respectively.
S2000 drivers Patrik Sandell and Eyvind Brynildsen were sensationally fast in Friday's snowy conditions, setting top-six times overall. While Brynildsen dropped out with an engine failure, Sandell clung on in the points until the final morning, ultimately finishing 11th.
Overall result:

Pos Driver Car Time/Gap
1. Mikko Hirvonen Ford 3h23m56.6s
2. Mads Ostberg Ford + 6.5s
3. Jari-Matti Latvala Ford + 34.0s

This very much depends also on the legislative of particular country. I know about problems Barum rally organizers had to allow Kruuda start in Barum with only Estonian driving licence (he was 17). He did several WRC events but in Czech republic he couldn't start. After all they managed to get exception but this may be in other countries as well. There is no global law concerning this.

Thats right Mirek, but now we are talking about a ss for less than 2 minutes driving. Can t think that exists a policeman that cant wait 2 minutes to allow a world champion to drive in a close route.Overspeeding was before 2 days.I could undersant all this if immediately they were taking his licence right the time he was speeding. Its ridicoulous....not the tactics, but the way they figure them......

Amazing start and i am so pumped up that i didn't even check the expiration date on my medication before taking it !!!!

Bring Mexico !!!

unfortunatelly F1 will not be on untill mexico so some of you will still watch the WRC till then....but in the words of keith richards....you cannot always get what you want...

What a great rally it was :) The new season looks very good

Congratulations to ESPN for a great coverage , really interesting with great comentating and just the right mix on on-board and "out-board" footage :)

Great to see these new cars . Way more attractive than the last generation , can't wait to see them on tarmac :)

You have 48 hours when You are allowed to drive without licence in Sweden as I understand.

Forgot to add ...

Well done mr. Wilson for respecting your clients and allowing Ostberg to get 2nd place . I didn't expect that from you , but you have raised a lot in my eyes :) Bravo !

Also , congratulations to the hero of the rally , Mads Ostberg !! ( my girl says he's cute :) )

Why does the WRC write such a strange thing??

"Key moment:
Historic Power Stage victory for Ogier as Hirvonen wins rally."

I'd rather say it's a show-off PS victory for Ogier, and a HISTORIC rally win for Hirvonen - the first one to take victory in a new generation car!

It was a good start to the new era of the WRC. Congratulations for Mikko but even bigger congrats for Mads for his 2nd place finish! I think he handled the situation very well this weekend and hope this is a sign for even better result in near future.

Such a strange situation. Can Petter still be awarded the points ?

Anyone?

Did Loeb reach service?

Co-driven
13th February 2011, 15:37
I think that was really awkward. Here in Brazil, if you have your driver's license suspended then immediately you aren't allowed to drive anymore. If in Sweden you can still drive for more 48 hours, then why don't let him drive for 48 hours and fifteen minutes?

I'm still thinking it's really strange....maybe with this he secured the rest of the budget that was missing for the whole season.

So: petter lost his license 48h hours ago, and that's why he is not allowed to drive car in Sweden (not even on SS? closed road section?)
Is he allowed to be in co-driver thus? Because in Finland it's not allowed to be co-driver without the license...Just wondering what gonna happen...

Anyone?

If I have understand the rules correctly Chris wasn't allowed to drive the car on SS and that they both in the car need drivers licens.

It looks like Petter isn't getting any points because of this.

He would need 2 hours, not 15 minutes.
