Isn't it like that, two engine limit is connected to certain chassis or body. If they take new car or chassis then they get to use new engines? I might be totally off but I remember smthng like that.

And if backup engine is already having doubts then my money is on Tänak not finishing PS on 5+5p situation .

It's gearbox linked with two specific rallys. Engine could be fitted anyone of 2 "homologated" per season. But using 3rd engine in year it's 5 min time penalty on a rally where it's newly fitted

Which being the serial numbered part, explains why there's only so much repair they can do since Sweden 7 months ago.

Yep that about yesterday engine, not about Sweden one. Mean yesterday unrepairable.. and if 'sweden one' brokedown tomorrow - it's 5 min at CER already

Amazing rules invented.. mega money saving
Spend tens of millions to fight for wins and titles, but unable to repair or use proper engines and therefor lose wins and titles

I would limit the engines 1 per two seasons

Well, it did save money on a new engine and they weren't rewarded for having a supply of new engines that shouldn't need to be built. The cost saving rules prefer endurance over performance and their engine failed that. They might want to look at the design, materials and manufacturing process.

Explaining that decision back in Concepción, Tänak said: “By regulation you’re allowed two engines per year. This is actually also the engine which we had a problem in Sweden and it’s also not in a good shape. So it was already getting on the limit on these two stages. So yeah, we try to save it for Super Sunday and hopefully it can take us through four stages.
