Based on this publication of the route, I tried to guess where the stages will be.

https://www.mapfab.com/map/AYGt/Monte-2022-route

Now the rally will be based in South of France. Only the power stage is retained from last year. Turini is driven on Thursday and Sisteron features in a shortened form on Saturday. Many of these stages haven't been driven since 2006. Lots of hairpins will feature on the route, especially on Friday.

I wasn't there for a long time but beware that RMC is very tough rally to follow for the spectators. Little sleep, few access roads with traffic jams, long and very slow liaisons, long stay outside in cold weather (rain at just above zero on a snow/icy surface is the worst option), no GSM or internet signal in the mountains and nobody speaking English. I have missed a stage because of an avalanche, because of cars stuck in a snow on the access road or because of not being able to leave a stage (for variety of reasons). Of course without snow it's easier.

It's a great rally, I love it but it's better to be prepared for an advanture ;)

I have been on Monte few times in different position. For sure for spectators it is difficult to access the stages. Despite it was fun to enjoy whole weekend with friends in a car, if you really want to enjoy the rally and see the rally cars, the best is to use helicopter...

i think we can end that cause today one of Ott's sponsors Betsafe thanked Ott for this year and said "Next season Betsafe and Ott will continue to rally together"

i guess you at least let your sponsors know that you wouldnt drive anymore (of course it can also mean a regular sponsorship with Tänak not driving but i doubt its what they meant)

Yep.

Sure it makes sense for Solberg to drive Rally1 in Monte....as 4th car, not on points.
Either they dig out 4th car, or Adamo is going for his "unlimited faith in Solberg" again.

I am all for congratulating Solberg on a good Monza rally. But he was 1:10 behind Sordo....on a rally where they had similar experience level and with easy tire choices.

Just to remember that this was Oliver's 5th start in a WRC car while Dani had his 177th WRC start (counting all categories)

Oliver did exceptionally well and was one of the bright spots of the rally

Experience level on Monza stages was much closer than it is on Monte. They both did it last year, Sordo in WRC, Solberg in Rally2, Sordo also did the "circuit version" before. In Monte Solberg did it twice with Rally2/R5, Sordo did it so many times I won't bother counting, in all kinds of cars.

Yes Solberg did very well but was still worse than Sordo (hard to expect anything else) even with much closer experience levels than it will be on Monte. So what logic dictates he will do better than Sordo on Monte?

Adamo (supposedly?) does all to win. Running a driver much more likely to do a worse result does not fit that.

Again this "pushing Solberg up" does seem to hurt Solberg the most. When he does a rally with no pressure where he can only surprise he does well (Arctic, Monza also Spain). When he is "expected to perform" it goes bad (basically every single Rally2 start this year). Pushing him on a nominated position on Monte just adds unnecessary pressure imo.

Have you noticed that Monte is NOT rally for WRC2 Juniors or WRC3 Juniors Championships ?

https://acm.mc/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/RAMC-2022-REGLEMENT-PARTICULIER-SUPPLEMENTARY-REGULATIONS-15.11.2021.pdf

2.1 FIA titles for which the rally counts
FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers and Co- Drivers
FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers
FIA WRC 2 Championship for Drivers and Co- Drivers
FIA WRC 2 Championship for Teams
FIA WRC 3 Championship for Drivers and Co- Drivers
FIA RGT Cup for Drivers and Co-Drivers

so I believe:
WRC2 Junior same system than ERC has, only certain rallies are counted for WRC2J, maybe 8 rallies and they can count 6 best (or 5 out of 6 possibilities, we wil see)
WRC3 Junior = JWRC
I could be wrong!
Haven´t seen any WRC2J or WRC3J regulations

It hasn't been published here I think, but Freddy Loix will make a comeback in Monte Carlo with a Fabia R5. Pieter Tsjoen will be his codriver. A lot of experience together in the car. Freddy has done 9 MC's, Pieter has done 3 as a driver and 2 as a codriver.
And I will be there as their RNC :)

SS5+8 and power stage share same ending.
SS4+7 direction is weird

tommeke_B
19th December 2021, 07:38
For SS4/7 there are two possible reasons I think. Maybe some safety concerns? If SS 4/7 would be reversed, it would be completely downhill all the way from the start to the finish, with an average descent of 6,2%. Maybe there were too many dangerous places towards the end in case of the downhill direction... The other possible reason is that TV-wise the time between SS3 & 4 would be too short if they ran them "in line".

AnttiL
19th December 2021, 12:32
Yes, 3 and 4 would be too close otherwise, the stages should not overlap for P1 drivers

Had my flights cancelled/rescheduled by the airline today. I think the travel situation will open up, but probably not quite in time for Brits to travel over. Pretty annoying as I think almost all Europe is in the same Omicron-riddled boat now.

I see that as totally expected since both his WRC starts have been a bit of a disaster. Last year he was behind Rally2 even without major issues. He was also slower than Fourmaux in Rally2 before Fourmaux got a puncture.

Probably a combination of not expecting a good results and not wanting to put extra pressure on him.

Perfectly fine and logical, just slightly at odds with the MSport PR angle.

I would think pretty simply if I’m honest! I would imagine that when he signed his deal, the possibility of him not being named in the main team on every event was a very real one. It remains to be seen if on any other events Loeb does, they chose him over Formaux, but I doubt it.

Recce cars have finnish plates. So far what I`ve seen race car(s) have estonian plates. Little confusing, as all Toyota`s actions in Estonia has moved to Finland. And (AnttiL can correct me) by finnish laws car must be in finnish register if it has been in country for last 6 months at least.

I don't understand, why they would limit the maximum energy released per hybrid boost (and to a such a ridiculously small amount, it would allow 1-1.5 sec usage at time only). Thats just the thing I thought would make things more interesting from a strategic point of view and now they have removed it basically, e.g. if someone uses their kWhs in the beginning of a stage and someone manages to distribute it along the whole stage etc.

I have been sceptical about those Rally1 hybrid cars from the start and this just confirms it, they are even more useless and limited than plug-in hybrid road cars. Full ICE or full EV would be the way I think it should be in WRC, plug-in hybrids are just a marketing circus and a sidestep.

Strategy-wise it's still possibly wide open. One driver may use all the 100kW at low revs and regret it on bambi ice, another may max at 20kW for 5 times as long, hopefully the teams haven't been talking on setting the maps and the drivers won't talk when selecting them. Give it a chance to demonstrably disappoint.

Sounds like a recipe to lose manu champ.

Unless Solberg dramatically improves both speed and consistency.

Sure we were saying similar things about Rovanpera at start of 2020, but he still had tons more experience and a history of good results at that point, unlike Solberg... and still they lost manu champ.

Toyota could afford losing a manu champ to breed their new star. Can Hyundai afford it at this point?

Finished Day 3 of Recce here in Monte Carlo. Weather cold, but dry. Stages mainly clear with a few patchy sections of ice & snow. The forecast looks dry for the weekend. Final prep this evening before shakedown in the morning!

Me, too! So many unknown factors here that predicting a winner with any degree of certainty is impossible even for members of this forum.
I note that of the 40 or so predictions, six drivers have more than one person predicting their win, including Mikkelsen!

I haven't, in all honesty, followed the technical aspects and news very well for the new regulations.

Is the 5 speed box a regulation or is it the same philosophy as the old Peugeot team with more torque = less gears?

Part of the new technical regulations. The first thing I noticed from the onboards that the driver is more animated changing gears than before, but doesn't change as often (less gears and partly due to the nature of the stage, of course). Also, the Puma has the best gear lever ergonomically, IMHO.

Yeah, surprising they haven't talked about it officially.

This is in Finnish, but it's basically methane made from air and carbon dioxide with the help of electricity.

Often there is power grid in SP. But if not, they probably use generators powered by same sustainable fuel as the cars use.

Likely it's for traffic reasons. The Rally1 cars have a remote service area near the shakedown, it would probably be too much running all cars through Monaco several times in the morning?

Loeb is proving me wrong. . .BIG time!!!

Felt he would struggle, but clearly Ford was missing his type badly last year. It's only shakedown, I know. But the odds for him pulling a blinder and winning hands-down must have narrowed.

With minimal testing and after two weeks in the desert.. extraordinary.

20th January 2022, 09:06
Shakedown is shakedown. Can't read much into it in terms of who could win/ who could fight for podiums etc.

However it's nice to see all 3 teams with a driver(s) on the 'pace' .

This rally could be an absolute minefield with battery issues. Which is pot luck. Sometimes mechanical issues are down to stress a driver puts on components etc, but Tanak and Katsuta here are just the unlucky ones in shakedown so far.

Full electric mode mean - no power steering?

In racing at least they usually try to avoid auxiliary belts on the engines, don't really know whats the usual stratigie in rallying but maybe the power steering pump is powered remotly by electricity.

Local grid or fossil-free bio-diesel generators but hydrogen is the plan for the future. https://www.wrc.com/en/news/2021/wrc/fia-and-wrc-take-360-degree-approach-to-sustainable-future/

Short and also very slow. The whole Monte is very slow actually, it might take us until the end of SS3 to hit fifth gear.
