Just take the official spectator access road to Lovhaugen. There is parking space and lots of nice places, jumps, fast bends etc. in walking distance.

do you have any videos from Lovhaugen?

If Mikkelsen had a 16 Polo in Sweden, how far off the leaders would he have been?
How much in sec/km is the aprox difference btw a 16 and 17 car on ice/snow?

we dont know yet

at least 1 sec/km for sure

I think its enough for a decent winter rally having in mind that the stages already have some snow.what do you think rallyper?

Rallyper
31st January 2017, 11:02
Not that big snowbanks from this snow in swedish part. But stabilize the surface and protect ice from melting if temperature raises over zero. So way better circumstances than last year regarding icy stages.
(However, I´m sitting 300K from the area.)

Less than 0,5 or 0,5-1,0 sec/km in your opinion?

Mirek
31st January 2017, 20:30
First of all it's very difficult to determine without head to head testing with the same driver. Of course in Sweden Ogier with 2017 can be easily faster by 1s/km or more than Lefebvre but that says nothing about both cars. 1 s/km is huge difference, roughly 5-6 minutes per event for the same driver, it may be possible on some particular rallies but I don't think Sweden is one of them.

Also don't forget what Ogier managed to do with the S2000 and now think if 2017 WRC can be faster than 2016 car by a margin a lot bigger than 2012 WRC over S2000 car. I don't think it can. First hint may be Breen's performance in Monte Carlo; 0,6 s/km against a reasonably faster driver but Monte Carlo is very specific case.

All in all I think that pulling random numbers out of the magician's hat is quite meaningless.

dimviii
31st January 2017, 20:32
i don't expect differences upto 1sec/km its huge.Maybe only at uphill stages.

andrew grimes
31st January 2017, 21:14
With the new aerodynamics and more power. I think 1 second per km faster is right. But you would need head to head to compare. Catalunya and Deutschland will tell a lot. As will Finland and Poland. But this is just my opinion

Mirek
31st January 2017, 22:01
Finland and Poland hardly. Just look at the difference between WRC and R5/S2000 there. Germany and Catalunya will show larger differences, I agree. From gravel rallies it is IMHO going to be Argentina and Mexico where the new cars will have the biggest advantage.

on “knon” it’s not allowed to enter the special stage from the stage start?

Thank you so much subaru norway for the pictures of the magazine.

It will be very useful, I have more questions for everybody.

if a road (for example in varmullsasen in the spectator zone where henning spin with the fiesta) isn't a specattor access this year, what dos it means? that it will be closed or only that you don't have to pay but the way isn't cleared too?

Any of you will try to move from knon to vargasen in the same loop?

and for the last, subaru norway, i have read your avatar of motorsportfilmer, if you are the one who records the videos, my congratulations to you!!

i would ask for some places in the video of sweden last year.

are they running this year the stage of first video? 0.31 it's torsby before the specattor zone? 1.17 is run this year?1.52 is the beggining of varmullsasen? you got there by the start of the stage?

and a last question, in friday's last stage (torsby), do thwy go with extra lights?

thank you very much for everything!!!

I guess you can walk into the stage if you can find some where to park off the main road, there are some dead end roads nearby you can use if you're lucky and they have been plowed

Hard to say about the road to Henning's corner, it's not very wide so maybe too many people got stuck and they closed it.
It's a shame they don't put proper symbols to mark what roads are closed.

Doing both Knon and Vargåsen is possible with a bit of luck, something like this but the road down to Vargåsen is not marked so don't trust me on this.

It's hard to pick something, even struggling a bit myself and it depends on what you want to watch. If you don't have WRC+ i suggest you watch some onboards as they have GPS maps so you can see where the car is on the stage to find something close to entry roads.

Just avoid junctions and walk 1km to find some places without fences and marshalls and you will usually find something ok :)

it would make cars slower...ruts are ruts, drivers have to deal with them

Guys,
This might be more appropriate for the technical thread, but I think if I ask the question there it might get missed, so here we are - any chance from anybody attending the rally for few snapshots of the 2017 WRC cars diffusers from underneath, i.e. the transition area from the flat floor into the expansion volume? I assume this should be fairly easily done (so he said) with the cars on stands or when being unloaded from the transporters.
Many thanks,

I'll be filming together with a guy from GalskapMotorsport, and we'll be on Svullrya and Knon, and we know where we'll be on Svullrya but a bit unsure on Knon.

I won't be doing any standing but allot of sitting. Unfortunately not at the rally stages but at my desk focusing
on studying for my course examination in medical terminology which is next Wednesday.

See incar-movie here from Shakedown, me driving with my Volvo in a local event two years ago.
Start of stage are now around 30 s in and a little bit shorter in the end to.

Guys,
This might be more appropriate for the technical thread, but I think if I ask the question there it might get missed, so here we are - any chance from anybody attending the rally for few snapshots of the 2017 WRC cars diffusers from underneath, i.e. the transition area from the flat floor into the expansion volume? I assume this should be fairly easily done (so he said) with the cars on stands or when being unloaded from the transporters.
Many thanks,
Nick

People are too quick to make judgment. It was a slow roll and no injuries and the car isnt wrecked.

Some making judgment on Meeke's 2017 season after one rally was bad enough, but after a test incident is ridiculous.

Mostly winter wonderland. Less snow in Karlstad, but enough cold to make ice etc.
Other places have plenty of snow.

No more snow expected before rally, maybe some on Friday afternoon on Swedish side.
Temperature a bit too cold on Wed and Thu, nights (as low as -15.. 20 in some places) but getting -5.. -10 on Firday and 0..-5 on Saturday and almost the same on Sunday. Maybe some + degrees during PS if sun comes out.

Who's judging? And it's not judgement after 1 rally. He is prone to this sort of thing since beginning. I am certainly a big fan of meeke and had lost all interest in the wrc until he got a drive in the wrc and would love for him to win the championship. He is always on the limit and is spectacular to watch. I simply stated that if this keeps happening he is putting himself under more pressure to get results.

No judgements here- he has form, spectacular when he's on it, but I still think he overstretches, which makes him vulnerable. Finland 2016 was brilliant, but its about consistency, and I am a massive fan, but really want him to get over this McCrash phase!

Yup. You'll pass three in Norway if you are going straight from OSL to Sweden, going on E16, none in Sweden as far as I know.
You can skip one by driving some more local roads, but as the toll you are skipping would be 2.40USD, I don't think it would be beneficial :)

If you for some reason are going in to Oslo before heading out, you'll pass a number of them.

It's also fairly good both ways from that tiny bridge, the road they are heading down, into the bridge is narrow, but it's not really many good spots on that bit, after the bridge it's faster roads. We use it as a base, and then, depending on amount of people, amount of cameras we bring etc, decide if we'll head some metres to any direction :)

That´s made from snowmachines.

Yes. Isn't it fantastic what efforts the organizers make in order for spectators and competitors to get the best possible conditions. It is simply great :)

Did Henning do PET in the Skoda?
If not, will he drive it before shakedown?

Knowing Henning, probably not.
We had a Fiesta ST Grp N some years back, and to do a story for the car magazine I worked for we let Henning borrow it in a round of the Norwegian Championship. He had never rallied a front wheel drive car before.
Only "test" he got was the 500 meters of driving from the trailer to the start ramp, and a bit of familiarisation on the transport to the first stage.
SInce it was very good competition in that class at the time people wondered how he was going to place in the class, first time in the car, never been in a FWD rally car, etc etc.
Well, he won the first stage, and continoued from there.
He won the longest stage with about 30 seconds. (This was a winter rally.)
On a long downhill stretch he went "balls out", and was equally as fast as Martin Stenshorne in a Mitsubishi EVO 9 Grp N (was the fastest Grp N driver in Norway at that time.)

Had Henning used as much time in prep (pace notes, video etc) as the young guys do, I really wonder how he had placed in WRC events :) Having seen his driving in his EVO 6,5 WRC, wow, he is just crazy!

11th january 2017 12:32 Just to show you I am not worse than bluuford: This year the temperature will be low and the conditions will be great for winter rally. Everything depends on precipitation, but I expect few centimeters of snowfall to keep on the ground because of low temperature, so it should be OK. I don´t expect decimeters of snow, but some snow should be there.

11th January 14:32 : I am afraid there won´t be any proper huge snow walls, but maybe on some of the stages there could be enough snow for snow walls here and there.

And the answer to question in your heads is: "No , it is not just good luck or coincidence, I am really that good in weather forecast."

Why?

The idea is that the driver will drive on the road and there are now snowbanks to lean against on other rallys either

Why... Because I like it when drivers are more aggressive and rely on the snow banks to keep the car on the road. It makes it different to other rallies, thus the different driving techniques.

It is reply to all those people who say: "You are good, Liposh, but just wait for Bluuford, he is the only one who can give us proper forecast". :D (and that happens quite often, you can find it here few pages back) I am not competing with Bluuford, he is the right guy and I adore him, but sometimes he may be out of civilization for a while. So here I am. ;)

Not sure if it so much better getting sucked into a snowbank and stuck ther. Some years back early 2000s i believe it was in the days of colin, burns, Tommi etc, it was a year with no snow banks and the drivers said they really liked it, because of the possibillity too cut and take shorter lines. Fun too watch as well

True enough, hitting snowbanks can cause problems if you dont do it right. But for the experts they allow pushing to the limit with the snowbank to nudge back into line.

Dunno where you read that but it's wrong. Sweden is one of the fastest when conditions are ideal because snow tires with studs give excellent grip on frozen ground. Leaning on snowbanks is not faster than clean runs, also it can be dangerous because snowbanks can pull you in. The advantage is sometimes drivers can risk more and get away with it.

The explanation was, the snowbanks make drivers feel more safe, hence pushing the car to the limit.

True, but many driver's say Sweden is their favourite due to the combination of speed and the amazing grip from the studded snow tyres... plus sometimes the help of the snowbanks.

if gravel comes trough the ice somebody may have 2 punctures in one section, it is enough to loose a lot of spikes because of the gravel to make a tire "bad"....thats why they (the smart ones) save theire tires

I no doubt it's a tyre saving rides. But we have same at Monte, Citroens save it too but they didn't get any advantage because of this.
Here same situation and I think with same result. Some fresh tyres still remain after rally

you are absolutly right, but the team bosses will always count on worst case....what if we have 6 punctures, what if the weather changes, what if we need 4 fresh tires for power stage...it is not logic and it will not happen, but they must be prepaired for any situation...

so the only solution is 1- give 4 extra tires for shakedown BUT take them back after shakedown
2 reduce PET to maximum 1 day per driver before the event

than we will have usefull shakedowns, especially on gravel, but with the existing rules it will be a desaster on gravel rallyes :(

Rallyper

Yes it´s called shakedown for a reason. If not trying your car properly you might loose that extra assessment needed for the 1/10 of a second differ.
