First of all I would like to emphasize : the performance of Kajetanowicz this two days was astonish ! To see the victory with so big gap in front of second faster...huuuuhhh, almost impossible to repeat something like this in European Championship. Nobody else impressed me, except Simon Wagner in his old Mazda 323 GT-R. I can not imagine frustration of mitsu evo & suby drivers, who were ''humiliated'' by this historic car.....
Looking forward to next event.

Simon Wagner did an astonishing rally. With a budget of 7.000,- €, one set of tyres, and a more than 25 years old car.

Are those Pirelli tyres really somehow related to Monte? As far as I understand they use shape developed for 2WD cars. Were they used by them on Monte? I don't remember seeing such tyres there myself (on 15x6,5" rims). 4WD have used 18" tyres in Monte for many years and before they used 16" narrow ones.

Mirek this tyre(SA pirelli code) we saw at Janner photos have beed produced for s1600 cars its 15'' diameter and can equipped only with Monte carlo studs. Its width at tread is 95mm ,and overall diameter is 627mm.
size is 135/85/15.

At least that pattern hasn`t been used as a snow/ice tire in Scandinavia to my knowledge ever( or very very long ago if it has..)

yes its different from Sweden spec tyres.

Lucas received third Colin McRae Flat Out Trophy!!

Well deserved after coming back from 23rd place after Stage 1 due to engine problems. A great show of determination and spirit and of course decent speed...

Thanks, I checked it with older catalogue and I can see You are right. The difference is that in the past the tyre was used for 5" wide rims while this new trapezoid shape allowed them to be fit on 6,5" rim.

Looks very ugly though with those tyres on 6,5 inches rims. In swedish RC we use 5,5 inches rims on 16" tyres with tractor pattern or semi tractor p.

pirelli recommends 5'' rims for these tyres.

are the 6.5" rims modified in any way to take these tyres? surely it will be much easier to knock the tyre off the rim like this

That´s what Baumschlager said.

I thought this is a new tyre using old existing tread. You think it's the very same one just "forced" on the wider rim? That certainly is a risk for punctures and it brings a question if it was a brilliant idea from Pirelli or if they brought the tyres simply because they didn't have any others... and it surprisingly worked much better than dedicated tyres from Michelin... :)

imho this possibility is more realistic, knowing their availability problems.
If it was Pirellis idea, wouldnt Baumschlager used the same?

imho Baunschlager played safe for his aim - the Austrian championship, while it looked some kind of gamble for the others. Kajto tested both on shakedown/qs and decided this is good enough, well surprisingly more than good actually:). At first might look as vulnerability, but obviously the internal pressure appeared quite enough to avoid troubles.

Yes, most likely it was a last minute solution hence the rumors about no Pirelli tyres available before the rally...

maybe an excuse for wrong decision?.As we saw faster 3 crews they hadn t any problem.

It's same tire, it's designed to fit narrow rim, designed to fwd cars, in Europe available with short and long studs, same pattern, etc like 16 inch, just downsized.
They look strange when fitted on wider rim, there is high risk of it going off "inside" the rim, especially if there is a lot of tarmac or you've got ruts in snow/ice

Mirek

Bartek, according to Pirelli catalogue SA1 is available only with short studs. Also the pattern is different than that used for Nordic events.

Tread with many blocks characterized by a high stud retention capacity.
The design of the profile and the structure of the tyre make steering very effective in conditions with a low level of grip on snow-covered and icy surfaces. The SA is designed for S1600 and R3 cars.
Studding only of the 'Montecarlo' kind, protrusion and distribution of the studs in accordance with the specific FIA regulations.

It's for sure available (or at least it was) with long studs also, we used such tires. Next week when I will come back home I can look for pictures.

Baumschlager was very angry when he heard that Kajto and others were using old 2WD 15" tyres.
But before the rally he already said that he wouldn´t want to use these tyres on wide rims because of possible punctures. So as ever you can´t get any real information out of Baumschlager´s interviews, and you can´t be sure that he really meant what he said..

Yep, that´s true. That SA1 tyre hasn´t ever been used in the Nordic/Baltic winter rallies. I doubt that the pattern will last with 7 or 8 mm studs...

Watching the highlights on ES it was really good to see the interview with Lukyanuk about the conflict in Ukraine and how emotional he was... he had to stop as he was so choked talking about wanting peace between Ukraine & Russia.

He seems a really great guy and I will be supporting him even more in future. Really hope he can get some financial support and be at more ERC events in 2015.

Great driver too.

Sport should keep away from issues of political character. And the regulations are clear at this level.

What Lukyanuk exactly said, is that the situation is difficult in Russia in economic aspect, and for him too, so that's what regular people want to get better. Wanting peace is not political as soon You don't take 1 side or another, nothing wrong with it.

Something more about tyres...

Michelin doesn't have dedicated "narrow" pattern for snow/asphalt conditions. They used NA00 pattern same with Nordic events. Some drivers used also asymterical GE00 which is a tyre for R3 cars but this one is wider. Nothing else is in their catalogue. Pirelli on the other hand used old but specifically designed pattern for snow/asphalt conditions SA1.

I just watched on Monte 2003 Michelin have used very similar pattern to this Pirelli one. Very strange their newer pattern doesn't work so well on the snow. But perhaps this is not the only reason...
