There could be talent, but what has that got to do with him competing? :S

He is a wealthy businessman that does rallying as his hobby and is doing a great job of improving the exposure of rallying in Brazil! It is not his fault that the WRC rules mean that he has to run so far up on the road, im sure he would rather run further down where his pace would put him!

Anyone knows for sure what happened to Nikara? We saw him in the last corners of SS1 going almost road speed but didn't pay attention to any detail. I think Ketomäki passed before him and there was longer than 5 minute break before them.

We were positioned 1 km before the finish. Relaxed place on a field with a long view, some 15 seconds which is a long time in Rally Finland. Ken Block went a little wide twice in front of us. He simply can't finish or if he finish he'll be at least 12-15 minutes off the pace... Latvala drove clearly more dirty than Loeb and Hirvonen. Neuville and Östberg went well as well, but it wasn't that clear that they were so fast as the stage time is.

Now hurrying to SS3. Lindroos just passed us... Crazy liasons. First 2 hours from Jämsä to SS1. Now almost 2 hours from SS1 to SS3 and then some 2 hours back to Jämsä. Few hours of sleep and drive to Urria. The rally is on :-)

Loeb knows these roads as well, if not better than Finns since he has not crashed.

Loeb also will win this rally, he is on to run now and there is no way Latvala or Hirvonen can match him. I'm surprised byt Neuville and Novikov, they might jump into suprises tomorrow. Östberg is having a good rally too.

My main interest is Esa-Pekka Lappi. I want ot see if he is able to put some pressure to Ogier tomorrow? :)

Ketomaa and Rantanen ..... *sigh* :mark:

The quality of rallying is so sad nowdays. Four factory drivers doing ok, after that just BS. Couldn't have imagined 10 years ago that 15th WRC driver would be 25th overall, was just not possible. Those days, there were good drivers like Loix just making it to top 10, now he would be top 5 in almost any car.
Saw one stage today, not gonna to any more was so dissapointed

I would heavily disagree as Neuville, Ostberg, Novikov and Tänak heve driven very well. Good drivers also in S2000 machinery. But OK, it's your opinion.
I say that it's going to get better as we have many promising drivers stepping up.

I know the story when back in the day the grass was greener etc, but I'm not buying that anymore :)

Good morning from SS4 Urria, at Mikko's place. Some 1 hour before 1st car, not too much people yet but there were a lot of overnighters on entrance roads. And the mosquitos are killing my nerves...

Yesterday we did most of the cars at SS3 Mynnilä. Fast straight over a crest which almost was a jump, and a breaking to fast left. A bit of old school atmosphere as spectators, a handful, were waiting other leg on the road as cars approached. It's interesting how Loeb's pace hasn't showed at our spots. He's of course fast, but no clear difference to Mikko, JML or Mads. Atko is doing fine as well, but he breaked far earlier than others, indicating a lack of confidence I think. Ogier, Paddon and Lappi are clearly fastest S2000s.

My prediction of how the rally continues. 1. Loeb and Hirvonen continues to show amazing speed. 2. Ford drivers try to match the speed and do mistakes, looses some minutes. 3. Hirvonen is allowed to fight for the win, because loeb has good lead in championship and it's home rally for Hirvonen. 4.Loeb and Hirvonen is 2 or 3 minutes in front of everybody before last stage. 5. Loeb stil wins in pure competition and wins powrstage also.

Good fight between Ogier and Lappi...

Wrong event to judge the performance of any fin though to draw general conclusions.... many tomato cans performed well here and they were nothing on other events.

Atko is also on a good pace given the circumsatnces...he beats the future media champion Ketomaa...

Ogier knows these stages way better than Lappi. This is his second wrc rally ever. To match and be faster than Ogier is very promising.

Please enlighten me what is so hilarious with my post?

Let me first bend it to you from barbwire. Lappi has started rallying 2009. Before that he was karting and rally sprinting. This is his first year with 4wd machinery. This NORF is his first or second NORF, maybe someone can clarify it. In Finnish national rallies, the stages of NORF is not used, especially in the summer time.

I counted that this is Ogier's fifth NORF. Surely, with the math of sheep herder, you must realize that Ogier has more experience of these stages than Lappi ??

Anyway, enough of you, Lappi is nowhere near a complete rally driver and surely his pace won't be this good in foreign rallies to him BUT to be in par with Ogier here, is very promising and will be a boost to his selfconfidence for the future. I'm very happy that we have such a talent in making and maybe Lappi will be a part of WRC stuff in the future. :)

In the interviews he has said he has tried everything so far, from aggressive to more tidy style, so far without a result. On the local rally radio they mentioned that they won´t give Latvala any splits in the next few stages, so that he can concentrate purely on the driving. Playstation era, eh.

so in other words you are saying that a professional rally driver who is considered a future finnish star (No 3478) hasn't practised the worlds most famous stages all these years ??? i am not saying he did illegal recce but i really doubt he has not run these stages a million times before or at least more times than Ogier.... and even if he did not... the stages in finland are so unique that it is not really necessary to do the stages themselves to learn them....

Mad cat jnr
3rd August 2012, 09:44
Of course it is neccassery to do them to learn them, there is NOWHERE like Finland, so how are you meant to be quick on stages that you have never driven anything like before?!

I am a member of the Nicky Grist Young Co-Driver Academy here in the UK and spent a day with Nicky and John MaCrone 2 weeks ago, Nicky was telling us stories of how he did the rally with Juha Kankkunen and he was reading the notes, but Juha didnt need them because he knew the roads and the cuts etc. he also told us of stories of how they did 1 recce pass and then went playing golf while everyone else carried on recceimng, experience (and seat time) are everything in world rallying!

The thing is on every rally finland we have a new future media star... first was ketomaa, then rantanen, then lindroos, nikara, ects ects ects....now we have Lappi

What he does here is impressive indeed... but many people before him did it and the result was the same always in the last decade... they fail when they set foot on roads they do not know by heart.

He is still young and hope his managers have a better plan than make him a media champion...

When people realise that Finland is a unique event where local Knowledge counts for 70% of the performance (unless you are an alien like Loeb) then they actually might start have a chnce of disstinguishing between real talent and manager games...

I really wish that Lappi is a true talent and shows it in the following years and shows the speed he has now on events that differ from Finland.

What happened to Dubert on SS5

He went off in our place, a bit weird off, he somehow lost it on the braking and slid to the ditch. It was a deep ditch so it took some time to get it out from there. I have some lifting photos as my sister took the camera when others went to push/warn.

Again at 18th hour awake and still a bit longer than hour drive left. Glad we had those 3 hours of sleep...

We managed 4 stages today and all showed some nice driving action. Today it've been clear that at least Latvala is disarmed. Only good thing is that there are plenty of kilometres left still, but his voice at stage-end interviews have reached another octave stage by stage. And that means he can't help it. Loeb's pre-rally talks of not taking risks and all was once again just talk, psychological war, first scratch. On SS Mökkiperä 2 we were at well-known downhill left-right with a round stone on the inside. Loeb had most hunger there and perhaps cut the most. In the big SS Palsankylä jump he did some 30-40 metres, I think only Tänak jumped longer. On the said jump, both Latvala and Solberg had unrest with the car on landing which could tell there's some things to change at Ford. But that was only one - and very big - jump. On Urria's Mikko's jump there wasn't so big difference for top drivers, I think. For last today we ended up Lankamaa 2 some 700 metres before finish. Not really a planned spot, because we changed in three times while driving - it was almost a close-call. That was just nice passage of downhill left, but still the difference between Loeb and Latvala was clear. Hirvonen however could still have an ace in his sleeve - if not for team orders... Then again, Loeb could have two.

Lindroos have been keeping a great pace at 2WD, though on Lankamaa 2 it sounded his car wasn't at its best. Hopefully I'm wrong. Don't know exactly what happened at the end of Lankamaa 2, but last handful of cars drove through the stage (semi) road speed. I was told a car had caught fire near start of the stage but nothing more serious.

Shame for Neuville. For a first timer he kept great pace, especially considering the gap never really grew that big - for a first timer. And must admit Block has surprised me as well. He's always giving a bit of show, but still after all the expectations and talk, this could be most mature act from the eternal child.

Few more hours of sleep next and then ready for last set of stages.
