Henning Solberg, yes, looks like all he wanted from WRC is to enjoy himself, and he did. Matt Wilson... I really don't what his agenda is, and I don't want to judge anybody, but with all these years in WRC he should have some progress. I mean, what is stopping him? Everything is setup to him, he don't have the problems of most of the young drivers - to find a sponsor and a good team, struggling over the years again and again with these. May be he is bored to be in the second Ford team?
uuu, that might be little harsh.
I agree with what you said about Henning. He was a charming guy and I miss seeing him around the WRC. About Wilson;I felt that Kris or Guy (or someone else from the British Isles who showed potential & speed, if being British was the criteria for Matt's drive) should have had the drive. Matt Wilson had a awesome opportunity with Stobart and he did not get the results to merit further investment. Perhaps I am being a bit harsh as well...

Just went into this and out of curiosity looked at the tyre order form - seems competitors only get to LEASE the tyres i.e. have to hand the used ones back at the end and for the privilege pay €315 plus VAT per tyre for the Michelins (or only €180 for the D-Macks). I thought my gravel tyres were expensive but never realised that WRC competitors were paying this amount for them. Do the works teams get a discount?

I said that because the last few years finnish drivers tend not to go abroad... like ketomaa, when he finally did it he was too old and he failed so hard it is not even funny.... yet he was hyped way too much like the next big thing... LOLORZ same for rantanen, lidroos and the list goes on and on and on...
The WRC needs the TRUE finnish champions back... not the wannabies, manager lap doggys, and media little kids we got fed for some time now
If what you say about lappi is true and he approaches his career like that then i wish him all the best and his chances are already look brighter than the jokes the media presented as future champions.
I think everyone is aware of that... that is why rallying is not for "favela boys" and you must be prepared to lose a lot of money if you want to get some back (and that is a big IF).
However i disagree that becoming a rally driver in IRC or WRC it isn't video game.... Nobre with no driving skills at all (let alone rally skills) proves that to become a WRC rally driver you need MONEY...
To become a manufacturer driver is a different story and not even talent, money, sponsors, connection can help you if you do not have luck and be there at the right time.
Ketomaa is one of most talented guys at the moment here, too bad hes chosen wrong paths during years. Crappy chinese team and DMACK now. Rantanen is just average talent with enthusiastic team around him, Lindroos is fast and poor who had golden opportunity in NORF last year.
Now you are getting true champion back when Sebastian Lindholm returns... And Juha Salo as multiple champion gets his chance with Proton. Though hes never been succesful in longer international rallyes. Hope these two WRC rounds will make an exception for him.
Lets give Lappi some time to see if he really can make it to the top. I believe he will.
Nobre is just having fun time in WRC, why wouldnt he cause he can afford it? Even he has been learning about driving during hes program. Its unfortunate that everyone aint supertalents with millions on their pockets to create career. Not every orange kicker become Pele. Rallying has always been hobby for rich people and let it be like that. That is their way to support rallying.

Nice to see Lindholm once again, but we have to remember that it's only one rally for fun (50 years in the meter tradition of Finnish champions...). Juha Salo is also past his Peak. Both of these drivers have done many things little differently than others. They have been very successful in Finland but have chosen to make rally career/business in Finland. For some (personal) reasons they have never tried 100% to build international career.
For some members who are not familiar with Lindholm: He is 8 time Finnish rally champion and has 8 second places. He is also 3 time Finnish rallysprint champion. :)

He is Grönholm's cousin.
Also, please note that in these Mini speculations, Salo in question is former F1 driver MIKA Salo, not 7-times Finnish champion JUHA Salo, as he is 100% committed to his Proton drive.

Yes, like I said the latest entry list confirmed what Tinke1979 reported earlier. Tahko was already entered in S2000, he just changed car to WRC Mini. Only addition to the original list is Lindroos, who was not included at all before.
EDIT: Also, Craig Breen's co-driver has been updated to Kris Meeke's usual co-driver Paul Nagle. Looks like Breen might start after all - I really hope so and wish all the best to this crew!

I don`t think it`s fair to blame all on the DMacks, if you would know the actual difference between DMacks and Michelin on back to back testing with WRC cars, all other manufactorers except Citroen has done and are doing this(that`s not even a big secret) you`d be surprised how close they really are, in some conditions even faster!
Also bear in mind that Ketomaas teams Fiesta is not full spec factory car. Of course he can`t be as fast a driver as the works guys either due to limited time in a WRC!

In particular the driver is different... If there has been a top WRC-driver in the car and he is slower than usual, then I will believe it, blaming the car is too easy...
But I still have a lot of respect for Ketomaa and I'm confident about it that he will set great times in Finland.
We`ll engine mapping, damper homologations, some specific differential parts not to be confused with different diff setups, some weightdistribution stuff etc. lots and lots of small things make one big thing.
And I`m not saying that Ketomaa would win in a similar car but I know for a fact that there are for instance these differences between Ketomaas car and the works cars.
Also M-sport cars have much more updates than "private" cars! Basically if you get the good stuff Malcolm has to be able to control that no one else can see it...

Anybody who pays can buy the Homologation papers. EVERY part on the car must be in the homologation papers with a description and a photgramph and/or a drawing, and a part number.Lengths, weights, tooth counts, everything---unless everything has changed since when World Rally Car rules became the norm.. I have Homologation papers for my old saab for Groups 1, 2, 4 and GroupA, i have Ford Capri Group 1,2 and 4 and I have Opel Kadett GSI 16v, and have spent some pleasant time looking at World Rally Car Escort Cosworth.. and writing down things (like +10mm longer connecting rod than the old Sierra or '93 spec Escort Cosworth, something I was glad to see)
Have they done away with Homologation papers now? They can't have.

Most likely two entry cancellations coming after Saturday's FRC event in Kouvola and hard crashes which happened. Annala had a bad roll after a jump (car landed copletely on the nose and started to roll rear-front-rear-front...) and car is destroyed. Kaisanlahti had a really nasty off, went off and hit a tree stump, 100+ kph to 0 in less than a second, engine came into cabin etc. Both taken to hospital. I'll write a bit more tomorrow to the FRC thread when I have time.

Did anyone order tickets online and if so have you received them yet? I am sure many people who are local pick them up somewhere but I wanted to insure I got them and they still have not arrived. I leave the US in just over 10 days so I am starting to get worried.
Also, right now my plan is to drive to our hotel in Laukaa then possibly drive back for SS3 at night.
On Friday we are looking at catching SS4 and then SS6. We also though about sticking around for SS8 but that would require us driving back by our hotel in Laukaa. Any thoughts or advice? We need to be back to Helsinki later afternoon on Friday and I am not sure how it is at rally's like this driving between stages and parking? Is it mostly all well groomed dirt roads between stages - I know that seems horrible to ask since I am attending a rally (lol) but I will driving my brand new Volvo and I can't return it back to the factory for shipment to the US with any "damage":-)

Just to make sure I understood. You arrive thursday 2nd to Helsinki, plan to drive to your hotel at Laukaa, then drive back south to catch stage 3 Mynnilä?( it's going to be late when you finally get to sleep) Then, on friday morning head to stages 4 and 6, possibly drive north to SS8 which starts at 1.32 pm and then try to get back to Helsinki at late afternoon?? It's not going to happen. First of all, there are basicly two different routes to Helsinki, at both sides of lake Päijänne. If you are on a tight schedule, I'd strongly recommend you forget SS8 and choose your way back after SS6. The reason is that there are a PLENTY of others also on the roads. That weekend police will be monitoring speedlimits so from SS6 I would say it'll take about 2,5hrs at least to Helsinki.
The roads between the stages are dirt roads but depending how you approach them, you may get relatively close via tarmac roads. The dirt roads are in good shape, not too many bumps so from that point you don't have to worry about your brand new Volvo ;) Of course, if you're not able to stick in between the ditches..... :p BUT, I would like to point out again, those stages are very popular and there are plenty of people with cars in that area so there will be waiting in lines etc.
Every year folks explode their heads because they get frustrated when they realize they are not going to make to stages in time ... because they make too tight schedules. Some members here probably still remember my awesome shortcut through the small roads. :D
My advice is that don't make too big of a bite. And remember that if the routes and timetables on rally guide look possible, it is just theory. You need time on stages as well in order to look a perfect spot for your rally experience :)

Thanks AFF, your are probably right; after looking at the actual distances it's not going to happen. I think SS8 is out of the question but it sounds like trying to make SS4 and 6 might be tight too? The only reason we decided to drive back to SS3 is because originally we planned to hit SS1 on the way north to Helsinki on the way to Laukaa but didn't realize how much later SS1 started (as we get into Helsinki on the ferry shortly after 6am). We then decided me might drive to our hotel and spend some time there - maybe catch a nap before heading out to the night stage. Seems like we might be doing lots of traveling that night though - how much time (each way) to drive from Laukaa to SS3?
It sounds like it might be a better idea for us to hang out in Helsinki a bit in the morning before heading north to SS1 - would you estimate that taking approx 1.5 hours? After SS1 we can travel on to our hotel in Laukaa with the possibility of getting there by 20:00? Maybe later? I guess we'll have to decide how much sleep we want.
Pardon my ignorance with how the rally runs and spectating works, I am used to US Rallys which are much less spectated and spectating areas are usually at the finish or start so everyone is parked up the road at start or finish and that is it. You can hike into the woods a bit but certain stages are not even open to spectators so it is harder for me to wrap my head around how this works but I,m sure I can just follow the crowds :-) Is there a good spectating map I can pick up when I arrive in Finland?
BTW..I made this post today and got home and my two Rally passes were in the mail!
A.F.F.

First of all, summer here in Finland means that the sun won't go down until very late for a short period of time. So, even the stages start late in the evening doesn't mean that they will be driven in the dark. You only drive back to your hotel dark :)
You have estimated the times pretty well. From Helsinki to SS1 it'll take about 1,5hrs depending the traffic as well as from your hotel to SS 3. That probably take a little bit more because many travelling from north will take the same route as you will.
You may buy an official rally guide from Neste Oil gas stations in which are very good stage guides, including parking and spectating directions. Don't worry, there are about a million of NESTE stations all over Finland. After you have parked you car, you may find a way to the official spectating point or you may follow the stage in the woods and find yourself a better spot ;) There will be marshalls who moderate the stage, some of them are friendly, some of them are not. Don't worry, none of them carry a gun :D . As long as your own spectating point is in a safe place, the marshalls probably won't say anything. The stage is closed an hour before the stage starts and after that you must hike in the woods, not on the stage. This is the reason I recommend a flexible timetable. When you reach the stage and have parked your car, it is very good if you have time to locate a perfect spectating point of your own. At official spectating areas there are services, tents where they sell MAKKARA, sausages, coffee etc.
Your plan to get SS4 and SS6 seem realistic unless you want to see all the cars. If you skip the latter part of the cars, you can make it easily from SS 4 to SS6.
One good hint is to listen the rally radio where there are directions and news conserning the rally, trafficjams, parking jams also in english. It's usefull when you have a plan to find a certain parking area and it's allready full. They usually warn that in the rally radio.

Depends on the location and marshall. In a crowded place it's a nightmare.

Thanks for the info. Is it really not allowed to walk on the stage from 1 hour before the stage starts? Even just quickly crossing the stage for example is forbidden?
Yes it is. But of course folks use the stage, especially if the marshalls won't see. The use of common sense is highly recommenned. They send zero cars before the first WRC, when those pass you by, it's better to be on the spot already. It's not only your own safety but if the marshalls see that spectators are not in proper places, the stage might be in jeopardy. The official spectating points are usually very crowded so IMO it's better to find a place of your own.
Oh and btw.... there are two different rally guides on sale. The official is Tuulilasi magazine and the unofficial is VM magazine which used to be official many year. I haven't seen Tuulilasi edition but VM is very good. YOu can find them for instance Neste Stations. ( Neste should give me free diesel for year for this promotion ;) )

After a quick glance, the VM guide looks good. Stagemaps are precise "orienteering maps" and it also has a big complete rally route map. Though it feels that VM is completely pointed to Finnish spectators as it doesn't contain anything in English... Some nice fill stories e.g. big Ouninpohja story and some interviews.
Thanks HarriK.

Yes, the place is easy to reach from that junction. But ofcourse there is going to be lots of people, so possibly car has to be parked a bit further away.

If NOT was referring to my comments about the difference in the cars for Ketomaa, than you completely misunderstood my intention, what I meant was only to try and enlighten the difference between factory cars and customer cars. Same differences applies for as well Novikov, Kresta, Block, Östberg etc. Though the M-sport cars have more upgrades than the completely privateer cars.
Everybody can look at the results and see who drives with what car the best! For instance Novikov and Östberg have identical cars, Solberg and J_M identical etc. That was my point NOThing else...

and
Tuulilasi official rally magazine is much more better for English speaking rally visitors
It has all the rally info in english, even the big 8-page rallymap is with english notes.
8€ from Neste Oil stations, 10€ in other shops
VM (vauhdin maailma) is only in Finnish language this year
both have same fails:
car 32 Craig Breen co driver Paul Nagle´s neme is missing
car 53 Riku Tahko is not driving Fiesta S2000, he is in MINI WRC
car 98 Joonas Lindroos C2-R2 not in entrylist

Tuulilasi, it has lot more info for getting in stages (ie SS3: VM tells you how to get start and finish and Tuulilasi has 7 different places to see the stage)
VM has no road closing times, Tuulilasi has them.
Tuulilasi is just like VM has been and VM is worse than before.

Those guys said Brasilian was even harder because so much slang, and so many diphthongs... Keeping this a little to WRC Finland is Nobre coming? Dear rally friends,
I will have a second chance to attend the great rally Finland which will take place this year.
From my first visit in 2007 I had great experience and moments. Especially the great car jumps in Ouninpohja, Velipohja!!!
Our group of people is coming from Bulgaria in the evening of 30th July and we are going to stay close to Jamsa, cottage in Himos.
I will let you know my plan for watching the rally by segments. I will appreciate if you can answer the questions I have. We would like to watch jumps and fast-driving segments as much as we can. I spent many nights in searching in Google maps and other websites, watching clips, so I made the following schedule:
01.08. Shakedown
I chose two jumps one after another, which are situated in a long distance before the finale.
02.08. SS 1 –Can you please advise me a place where we can watch fast racers? In some of the articles on the web I watched an amateur clip with a regular car, but I didn’t see any jumps on that segment. Is that right?
I would be happy if you advice me where to watch SS3, as it is a new one and we are interested in it.
03.08
1. SS4 Urria – the chosen place is a car jump close to Orrati lake.
My question is the following: Can you reach that segment with a car from road Hakamaentie, which is separating from road 23?
Or can I go from road Uriantie east, where it intersects with the segment, but from that point to the car-jump place is around 3 km, isn’t it too far?
2. SS7-10 Palsankyla – the chosen place is the car-jump segment close to Iso Pohjoislampi lake. We can enter to the segment from road Pilkakoskentie.
Or we can enter from Aholantie, where in my opinion is closer to the car jump.
Since there will be too many people and cars, do you, guys, think that we can go from SS4 to SS7 in time? My plan is to watchWRC and S2000 at SS4.
3. SSS – do you think we will manage to reach it after SS10?
04.08.
1. SS 14 Leustu – Jump Novikov, is situated on road Hirvimaentie. Since SS will be on the opposite direction, do you think that there will be a jump on that opposite side?
2. SS Ouninpohja –jump Yellow house !
Maybe there is incorrect information and some mistkaes in all that I mentioned above but after all it is in theory. Probably many of the questions I asked you about would have their answers after I arrive there and buy the schedule (parking lots, how to reach the segments and etc.)
Thank you in advance to all of you for your comments and pieces of advice!
Best rally regards,
Zdravko

SS14 Leustu. There will be a jump but it's marked red to the notes. Don't expect anyone jump like Novikov did few years back :D
SS Ouninpohja. I strongly suggest to avoid the yellow house jump. There will be about a million spectators there at the jump and in worst case you won't be able to see nothing from there. Remember, the first ones will spend a night there and they won't give up their spot easily. Don't worry though, there are plenty of good... no, great spectating points at Ouninpohja. Just try to get there way before the stage start and find yourself a good one :)

Apparently a lot of testing going on at the moment. Customer Fords (Block, Rantanen) and Hirvonen at least.

I don't know Lankamaa too well, but it is for sure traditional stage for the rally and relatively fast too (average over 120 km/h). Most notably for this year the end part is different, thus no "barn bend" which is famous for several high speed offs (Al-Qassimi, Llovera + 1 in 2010, P.Solberg in Focus 2000?).

I heard mentioned that field parking is already out of the question for most stages because of the rainy summer we've had.

Go Petter! It´s his time now. And Mikko will follow. Loeb? Visiting a ditch a couple of minutes makes him just fifth or sixth...

How do people rate the chances of Chris Atkinson on this rally?
It appears he is there more for a PR exercise to build his own brand than to go rallying. He only has a few small sponsors decals on the car and he seems to be trying to get close to Ken Block in terms of brand positioning and tie-ins. I hope it works out for him, he was certainly a spectacular driver and maybe there will be room for him in the WRC again when Loeb retires and the competition is opened up a little.
Atkinson's DS3 WRC does look great though, although I'm not sure of the American style of drivers 'claiming' a number as their own as he and Block appear to have done. I remember when Valentino Rossi did the same for Rally GB years ago, the FIA weren't happy to give him number 46. Then again, if it brings well supported, well branded drivers and their money into the WRC it will help revive the sport.

His brand IS to go rallying. Not sure what you mean.
He's there for exactly the same reason as everyone else - try and make a career out of it and land a seat.
As for the numbers - the FIA were only reluctant to give Rossi 46 because someone else had that number all that season (PWRC, I think?) so fair enough. Make him pay to use it!

There is reason behind the 43 of Ken Block, he used to own (until he sold it for huge amount, but still is actively involved) in DC Shoe company. Which numbers are these letters in the alphabet ? ....
Hence he is so proud/keen on this nr.

First, I'm happy that Atkinson is making appearences in WRC this year. He was not exactly an also-ran in his Subaru years, especially the last two. In his last performance in Finland, he claimed a podium. That doesn't come for nothing. But for now - it's best not to have any high expectations for him because of the break he's been into. If he get the rhythm, I'd say he land somewhere around positions 6-8, but it's just as possible that he'll get DNF. Anyway, he is one of the nicest additions to the entry list - out of the regulars, that is.
By the way, does anyone have any fact that Henning will start? Any sights of him?

This photo appears as it've been taken from the walk bridge when arriving the service park. The new hotel that's been built in the middle of the service park is finished now and some (many?) of the drivers are staying there and at least Mikkelsen posted similar photo in his Twitter account. It's clear that the city of Jyväskylä lives for and from the rally.

You mean the Kakaristo junction, I guess. Usually there has been a huge field parking area there. Was there last time in 2003 and then some cars got stuck somehow - stupid driving methods.

@SubaruNorway: There are plenty of roads arriving at the Kakaristo-junction, I think there should be enough possibilities to park there. ;)
Leaving to Schiphol (NL) tomorrow to fly to Helsinki... Hoping to have a nice event. Thanks guys (Hartusvuori and Juha_Koo in particular) for the info. :)
Summer has been pretty wet and if it rains a lot this week the fields used for parking may turn out to be too wet. Better to prepare for the worst case that is a walk of few kilometers. 2008 there were 15000 people at kakaristo and now even more is possible. If the weather is goog they are expecting 50-100 000 rally fans to Ouninpohja stage! ;)

Also was interesting to notice how Loeb & Hirvonen arrived to recce start later than pretty much anyone else from top drivers. Loeb was perhaps the last to start the first recce run, meaning he could already see where other drivers have "tried" to cut. They both also stayed concentrated inside their cars, Ogier also, whereas Ford boys and most of the rest of the field were out of the cars having a chat.
Abbring was also doing recce in VW's car. Few other recce-only crews, but didn't recognize them.

Also a reminder on the importance of the qualification. Even if there are 3 stages tomorrow, the running order drivers choose applies for Friday as well (Leg 1 is less than 10% of the route, that's why).
Even if the running order doesn't make that big difference in Finland as the differences are small anyway, if it rains more, it could mean more which position you run in.

Judging from QS and supposing it will rain two days, that would be the case.

Apparently they don´t believe in rain, Loeb takes position #10.
And Latvala #11, Hirvonen #12.

Nice QS and SD in Ruuhimäki, good jumps at the big jump... Surprise was Nobre, he came flat out and flew really high and long!

For Ford its probably a good thing that they didn't win the qs, that way they don't have the opportunity to stuff up the road positions!
Bring on the rally, looking forward to seeing everyone's vids and pics, have an awesome time out there!

Anyone seen SD-times for the S2000's? Would be interesting to compare Breen, Mikkelsen, Ogier, Andersson and Paddon. Read a tweet from Craig Breen saying something about him being fast, but no times mentioned.

I read this on P-G website
PG and Emil has just completed shakedown and was the fastest of the Super 2000 cars running on World Cup points.
- "We adjusted a little bit more now during the shakedown, and it felt really good. So I was pushing the car to the fastest time on the last time around" laughs PG.

Thanks, then we know PG was fastest, followed by Breen. Anyone else with more information? ;) We don't know that at all. The comments are not definitive. Neither is the shakedown particularly important as it is not a qualifying stage with the starting order already predetermined.
Realistically you would expect Anderson to be fastest out of the blocks tomorrow but the contest and the result will be thrilling.

It is not important, I know that, but sometimes it could indicate the pace. PG was obviously pushing max to get the best time, while Ogier probably just had a run to check the settings. And I do not expect PG to be fastest out of the block, Ogier would be my favourite - Paddon may have the pace straight from the get-go as well. I agree the contest will be strong and intense, will be the most entertaining battle this year - I hope!
And I have a fetish for SD-times ;)

And as ELPE writes, PG was fastest of the guys running for points.. Guess that doesnt mean the VW motorsport guys

2nd August 2012, 09:48
True, but still interesting to compare the pace, at least from my point of view. Hoping PG will finish and climb up the resultsheets throughout the rally. And if Mikkelsen is on Ogier's pace, he might secure a ride next year, don't you think? Can't wait for this afternoons opener!
