To me it looked like the electric engine either wasn't on or wasn't properly synchronized with the petrol engine in 3/4 of the hairpin passes. The car turns and then there is a lul before power comes.
Might be that they are also testing different ways (programs) to use the hybrid.

Fourmaux mentioned in the recent interview that FIA hasn't decided on when and how it will be used and wants to make it as unpredictable as possible. That sounds like a really bad idea to me.
The basics rules on when and how it can be used should be decided as soon as possible cause they likely can affect tons of other areas of the car and need much more testing to fine-tune.

At the same time there likely needs to be some strict rules so it doesn't turn into "programmers competition". (at one point some team mentioned they could program when it will be used individually for each stage based on corners/profile ++, that sounds like a recipe for cost explosion.)

I agree, we don’t want it to turn into a programmers competition…I would prefer it’s on the driver to push the button, but I don’t think the FIA want that. At least then it’s a driver controlled strategic option.

But as a programmer myself, I want to get involved in the race ;) But seriously, engine and diff mappings are probably also very crucial at the moment, I doubt it will be more complicated than that. And developing software is cheaper than developing mechanical parts.

And when the first news came in about electric boost, my first thought was how great sporting aspect it could be, something to show on the telemetry on TV and compare driver strategies, but for some reason that's not going to happen.

Well I don't get why it just can't be a button either.
Maybe with some "speed limit" that makes it impossible to use above 120 kp/h or something like that.

Then again without gear changes on the steering wheel it might get a bit busy in the cockpit.

It was clear that Gus will continue next year. Money talks...If Msport were serious his money would buy a full season in a 4th car.

Msport were prepared to pay and run a driver like Tanak/Evans/Neuville/ Ogier which would've cost millions, so I don't think it looks great if Greensmith is one of the 3 points scorers considering Fourmaux will also be bringing budget.....

Breen/ Fourmaux/ Greensmith doesn't look nearly as strong as Breen, Fourmaux and one of Mikkelsen/Suninen/Lappi etc

That timing makes little sense. Why would he test after Acropolis that he won't drive and before driving for Hyundai in Finland?

I’m not a huge fan of Greensmith but, except Lappi, I’m not sure another driver makes a lot of sense in the third car.
The best (considering Evans and Rovanpera will stay with Toyota) would clearly have been a Lappi-Breen-Fourmaux line-up but, for some reasons, the relations are not good between Lappi and M-Sport. It is the only point that is a pity for me because it would have given three teams with 2 good drivers at least.

Then, considering the current season, I don’t see why it would be better to take Suninen over Greensmith: Suninen has probably more potential but on the current season, except in Arctic, he was not faster than Greensmith and he was less reliable (and both had technical issues so this cannot be a real excuse for Suninen).

And about Mikkelsen, he is not dominant in RC2 (only one win this season in 9 rallyes, counting ERC and WRC) so it is not a no-brainer for a seat in RC1. Personnally, I think it is better to take a young paying driver in the third car who did decent results in RC2 (Greensmith, Gryazin, Bulacia, Loubet) and focus their means to give the best car possible (to help Breen and Fourmaux to achieve results) than hiring an average third driver, in M-Sport situation

He is leading both WRC2 and ERC at same time, cause when needed he can drive at 90% and get a result unlike the likes of Gryazin or Lukyanuk who go full push all the time and end up crashing every second rally or finishing with only massive luck (Lukyanuk in Liepaja and Estonia).
If needed he can also do full push (4/4 Powerstage wins this season, 1 min+ wins in Monte and Monza). Since seemingly abandoning the "full push" approach after crashes in Croatia and Sardinia, he drives very Ogier-like.... the kind of driving that gives titles and not stage wins. Btw. when it comes to age, Mikkelsen is younger than all of Tanak/Neuville/Evans and only 8 months older than Breen.

----

Anyway it all comes down to what MSport (and Ford) want.
If they want to make money and occasionally make headlines (seems like MSports line of business) Fourmaux and 1 fast driver is indeed more than enough.
If they want to have a chance for anything other than last place in manu championship 1 "learning" driver is more than enough. Sometimes even one too many (Toyota in 2020).

Malcolm was full of big ambitions a few months ago, talking about hiring top drivers etc. If it goes down to 1 fast driver (outside of "top4") and Fourmaux + paydriver, it's quite a far cry from that. Probably the only hope for more interesting lineup is that this is not good enough for Ford.

But this is all off-topic in this thread.

for some reasons, the relations are not good between Lappi and M-Sport

What makes people assume so? Lappi wasn't able to bring budget for this year, that's why he had to leave the team.

Then, considering the current season, I don’t see why it would be better to take Suninen over Greensmith: Suninen has probably more potential but on the current season, except in Arctic, he was not faster than Greensmith and he was less reliable (and both had technical issues so this cannot be a real excuse for Suninen).

This is ridiculous. Suninen on his worst season is equal to Greensmith on his best season! In Monte Suninen didn't finish a single stage, in Sardegna he was cleaning the road and in Estonia the car was falling apart. Can't really say much from his pace this year. Last year he still got a podium and won a proper stage.

In Monte Suninen didn't finish a single stage, in Sardegna he was cleaning the road and in Estonia the car was falling apart. Can't really say much from his pace this year. Last year he still got a podium and won a proper stage.

The issue is that it is Suninen’s 4th season with the car and he had 37 starts with it (Greensmith 17).
And yes, he didn’t drive a lot but he did the early mistakes in Monte Carlo and Sardinia.
I do not say he is totally lost but, personnally (and I can understand that there are other points of view), between a driver that has shown no real sign of improvement in 4 years and who is doing his worst year (+ not reliable) so far, and a driver who has shown some improvement in the last rallies (even if, as I said, I’m quite cautious as I’m clearly not a huge fan of Greensmith), I can understand the choice on Greensmith or to be more precise, the choice of letting Suninen go. But for sure, if you add the money aspect, it is way clearer.

About Mikkelsen, I do not say he is awful in RC2 as he is leading both championships at the moment (with a race more in both however) and he is probably better than Greensmith. But at the moment, between him and Ostberg, it is quite the same level so it is not a no-brainer to take him. But a part-time deal between the RC2 (to help M-Sport to come back at a better level as Citroen did with Ostberg) and the Rally1 car could be interesting for both.

To come back on the testing topic, it seems Rovanpera is also testing the Toyota hybrid this week according to Dirtfish

Allez Andruet
3rd September 2021, 16:52
Come on now, Mikkelsen and Suninen are lightyears ahead of Greensmith when talking about potential and talent. No offence to Greensmith, but if we're talking about "traditional" factory seats, he shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as those two.

The 2 day testing Mikkelsen did in Sardinia with Pirelli this week was with Tuohinos Fiesta WRC on tarmac.

Likely Pirelli has some upgrades before Spain. 2 day testing sounds quite excessive ( and expensive), not quite sure what Pirelli gains from it tbh.

Mikkelsen says the Fiesta turns great on tarmac.
Note that he has 2017 Polo, 2017 C3 (great), 2017-2018 Hyundai (terrible) and 2019 C3 (bad) as reference:

https://youtu.be/IZrybaUbcVc

MSport was testing with Puma on gravel at same time. I'd guess this was coordinated for spare parts/mechanics reasons. Last time right before Sardinia they had to get parts from MSport in the service park when something broke.

I do wonder how this works with the test day limits for MSport. Does it count towards them or not? MSport uses only minimum of test days for the current car this year, but they seem to be using a lot on the Puma, so they might run low in the end.

- Still seemingly smallest cooling ducts in the rear
- More importantly clearly least aero of all 3 cars. Puma has the huge front splitter for front-end downforce, Toyota has the shaped front fenders and also ran the crazy rake angle on last test which will increase front downforce.
Obviously this is likely not the final aero of the car.

Sometimes 60fps can look like that because you see shaking better, i've always used 24 and 25 except for 60 on Rally X Nordic 2019.
Right click and stats for nerds, no one is speeding them up for sure :)
Even movies are in 24fps like Mission Impossible, high fps is not always the best.

The thing I find odd is how particularly noticeable and jarring 60fps is on rally videos, maybe because we're just so used to seeing these cars on the edge, you know that what you're seeing is unnatural in exceeding that.

I disagree, I think the car looks to have a much better and stable rear end than the current Fiesta. It squares up well and drives forward on power and doesn’t seem to over pitch or over rotate off power, my initial impression is this will give the drivers more confidence, certainly on gravel.
Might struggle with understeer on tarmac, but then so might the others as they won’t have the centre diff to tune like this year.

I must be missing something, but that's pretty clearly not some repurposed i20 Coupe - the bodywork is completely different, and it's wearing a registration plate never seen before in WRC for Hyundai. If registering a car in Germany is as tough as I am informed it is, that won't be some half-assed job - that will be a 2022 test car. the fact a grainy thumbnail (no disrespect) seems to show a strange roll cage isn't going to persuade me otherwise...

It's still a test mule with some basic new bodywork but not the full detail and aero that is due in the next few weeks. Adamo told them to concentrate on the running gear for now.

its clear that the new cars are slower, alot i can say.The youngers will adapt quiker. They don't to me. Maybe in very slow and twisty sections, it is perhaps a bit more noticeable. However in fast sections they are clearly still quick and should be just as spectacular to watch stageside, as with less aero and less advanced suspension they will be harder to drive.

I think the top drivers will notice a difference much more than any spectator will - especially while testing as they are still jumping from the current cars straight into these rally1 test mules. Ofcourse they have to adapt.

The cars sound superb, aren't anywhere near R5 type slow, and still look aggressive to me despite the not as advanced aero. They will only get quicker and quicker over the next 3yrs.

Only a little note to this. I guess that Germany, like many other countries, has an exception for car manufacturers to use plates not registred to particular chassis numbers. Of course normal people can not do that but manufacturers usually have such plates registred only on a company name and used purely for testing purposes.

“The exhaust is just passing on the right side of our legs in all new cars, so for Toyota and Ford it’s the same, and this is causing some massive heat,” Wydaeghe said.

“Now we are almost in winter time so it’s quite cold outside, but if you go to Portugal or Sardinia or Kenya it will be a big challenge.

“But we have good engineers and I’m sure we can find some solutions for that, I hope.”

Järveoja added: “I think the heat will be quite difficult in the hot rallies.

“Today when we are testing it’s quite cold outside but in the car it’s already quite hot, so let’s see.”

You wanted all the hybrid car discussions to be in the Rally1 hybrid cars (2022-) thread but somehow you have missed my post there a month ago ;)

In an interview with Auto Hebdo , the transalpine official explained that, despite not seeing so much news of Hyundai tests, they are working. "By the time of the Acropolis Rally we already had four tests done on asphalt" , he assured.

He acknowledged discretion in testing, "We test, but it's not to show in press releases. It seems to me that our competitors are very interested in showing their cars on social media."

Sordo on Friday

https://www.motorsport.com/wrc/news/hyundai-puts-2022-wrc-car-through-full-rally-simulation/6721423/

Hyundai Motorsport is conducting a private rally with its new 2022 hybrid World Rally Championship prototype to aid preparations for next season.

The Korean marque has set up essentially a bespoke three-day rally to mimic exactly the conditions the new i20 Rally1 car will be subjected to when the WRC's new hybrid regulations are introduced next season.

Hyundai has elected to carry out this full rally simulation on the tarmac roads in the Piedmont region in Northern Italy. Working with local authorities, several sections of roads have been closed off to create rally stages, some previously used in Rally di Alba.

To ensure no stone is left unturned with its preparations for next year, the event incorporates electric power only zones, to put the car's 100kW hybrid system through its paces.

These zones will be in use at every rally next year between stages, while the cars will also be required to run on electric power only in the service park.

To practice this, the team has also attempted to recreate a midday service and tyre fitting zones to make the rally simulation as authentic as possible.

Ott Tanak jumped behind the wheel of the i20 on Wednesday before handing the car over to Thierry Neuville on Thursday, while Dani Sordo will complete the event on Friday.

The rally simulation is evidence that Hyundai has been increasing its 2022 car testing in recent weeks, having been previously playing catch up after being the last of the current WRC manufacturers to receive the green light for its Rally1 car project.

The i20 Rally1 car is competing the event utilising a camouflage livery to hide some of its aerodynamic styling cues.

Teams have had had to redesign body shells for 2022 with the new regulations reducing the amount of downforce the cars create compared to their predecessors.

I would say the Puma does look stiffer than the Fiesta from the videos we have seen, and in honesty better for it, yet the Hyundai appears to have gone the opposite direction on the evidence we see so far.
I’ll wait until we really see them in competition to decide for myself if they really are what we see now.
