I was also watching Ogier's test and shoot some photos in that corner when he crash his car.
It was his second run in that road (they changed test road just before that)
Ogier was nearly off road in first run in that same place. In second run he had no other chance than to pull the handbrake and rest is history...
We drove the test stage and his lines were same in other 2-3 corners. A lot of loose gravel and he had been a little bit off the road in two places. Nearly managed to clear one bridge wooden rail.

Citroen Team started to repair car (one broken damper and windscreen) and i think they maybe try to continue test. Better to test, because car wasn't good in loose gravel!!

edit: car started to fire after it was turned back on wheels. Team emptied one carbon dioxide fire extinguisher to the engine room. Oils were leaking propably on the top of the turbohttp://www.sanakirja.org/search.php?id=216018&l2=17

Nonetheless, here is my short video: VIDEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4_l6vfIZC4)

I have to say, I was very very surprised by Mini... Especially the suspension, it looked absolutely fabulous! Sordo commented it being even better than C4 on landings. A couple of wicked jumps there, of course the landing is always certain but once Meeke gets that thing going the landing could happen either on the road or into a lake.. A great shame that Ouninpohja isn´t still in the route because a red Mini and Ouninpohja, you know.

yes i noticed that too, much like the Audi S1. surely spectacular to look, but do they loose time or confidense when jumping like this. they may need to adjust the way the drive over the jumps to avoid something nasty to happen

I don't quite understand you all... What's the problem in Mini's jumping? Both crests were bit special, they had a shape which throws the car. Yes, it lifts the front a little bit but what's the problem with that? Latest Focus did exactly the same and it was the fastest car in Finland. The smoothness of the landing was very good, especially on that corner jump where they flew sideways. It came down in a very predictable way every single time and nothing uncertain in it, always glued immediately to the road and continued.

Suspension travel was once a big thing , now damper control has taken over , the more accurate you can control the damper the better .

I`ll have to agree with the others, seems as like the car is seeking a bit after the landings also on one video where there was a small bump in the road in a corner there was clear chassis movement that`s definately disturbing IMO and the landings are fine if we were 10-15years back in time. Now compared to the DS3 and Fiesta they seem to be landing like a cat whereas the Mini "crashes" down but mainting driveability however which at the end of the day is the most important thing.
We`ll better not to judge anything before finally seeing them live in a couple of weeks. Report back than...

But just relaying to expectations I was expecting very nervous car on the jumps and crests. I wasn't expecting some DS3/Fiesta killer but a car that could manage to lose maybe only 0.5 sec/km to Ford/Citroen. I was also at the test and gotta say that the 0,5sec/km difference to top teams isn't impossible. The car really looks stable. It doesn't have same kind of range on suspension like DS3/Fiesta but it's surprisingly good. The engine is lacking also some power to top teams also but the weather in the test was wet and heavy so the difference is hard to judge.

Kimi´s Finland test in the news today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTOmOedagLU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0ZTsw0W5u0

Kimi would be happy if they could just finish the rally, but co-driver says that 6th place would be a realistic dream result for them.

And about next year, Kimi still says that all options, F1 included, are still available and that he could go anywhere he likes, but I suspect he is saying that just to keep the buzz going and to sell a few more of his signature caps. But he also said somewhere that doing rally and Nascar at the same time is tiring so maybe he will focus on something next year, who knows.

Mini tested today with Sordo (and Meeke a bit). Day 2 proved successful, even though the weather was very rainy at times. Nice jumps. :)

Nonetheless, here is my short video: VIDEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4_l6vfIZC4)
And small photo gallery: PHOTOS (http://juhake.kapsi.fi/mini_fin_test/album/)

I have to say, I was very very surprised by Mini... Especially the suspension, it looked absolutely fabulous! Sordo commented it being even better than C4 on landings. Really, they have progressed a lot with the suspension. Engine seems to lack some power but otherwise it is starting look like a very nice package. I fell in love with it! ;)
Hmmm I think Ford are ****ed. The way that car flies reminds me of watching the 206 WRC testing in Australia and realising just how good it was going to be.

So they were testing at NORF Kavala stage in 2010?

Daniel
19th July 2011, 22:20
I don't quite understand you all... What's the problem in Mini's jumping? Both crests were bit special, they had a shape which throws the car. Yes, it lifts the front a little bit but what's the problem with that? Latest Focus did exactly the same and it was the fastest car in Finland. The smoothness of the landing was very good, especially on that corner jump where they flew sideways. It came down in a very predictable way every single time and nothing uncertain in it, always glued immediately to the road and continued.

I agree, I think the Mini looks a very good jumper.

I thought the Mini was a skirt . . . . . though I've seen some Mini dresses that weren't much bigger than a jumper!

thats a good question. if loeb might go to vw or retire from rallyeing next time he might get a chance from citroen, but will be always 2nd driver behind ogier then.(like duval was with loeb). if he could show up with the ford a bit...who know´s, maybe they would kick out hirvonen then. but if i was vw i also would have an eye on him, in my opinion he´s pretty mutch the biggest talent at the moment.

I hope that North One understands that their in car footage is totally s*** and barely watchable. they have to do something with that, and i am sure they have options, but it seems that North One is ran by people that do not understand what is spectacular and not. certainly a camera looking at loeb's helmet and eyes is not, as was the case in Acropolis rally footage

Helmet cams are very difficult to use in actual event, because the capacity is limited and it would be the crew which would take care of operating them. I quite frankly don't see it as a crew's job. They are there to compete, not to make outstanding multimedia. :) Also what I've seen, helmets take quite a pounding, camera angles won't last for long.

Onboards have improved a lot this year. Except Sweden, all lousy incar angles (e.g what C4 had) have disappeared. I really really like the angle which have been used in Mikko's car this year (this one: http://juhake.kapsi.fi/motorsport/fiesta_onboard_angle_mexico.png ) which has been possible because of the new safety seats. The camera is mounted on the seat's "ear". Only thing that I don't like is the "bumper cam", it's too low, although it gives a nice sensation of speed, it's easily covered with dirt and you can't see the road's profile well. Also from that angle, you can't see the car itself, so it's harder to draw any conclusions.

i do not like the zoomed cameras at all i prefer wide angle ones so i can see the whole effort the driver puts...especially those cams that show part of the footwork as well..... the incar zoomed cameras fail to capture the intesity of the driving....a thing that helmet cams manage perfectly. Being an on board addict (i have 1.128 onboard rally videos from various events) i think the onboard cameras used by the WRC are very very boring. The posibilities are almost endless yet all we get is the same hood/bumper and the cross section of the rollgae cameras....its a pity and a waste.

here is an example of some nice incar work

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OajlZJiYt3M (hillclimb event)

the car hits the limiter as soon as it is in the air. i cant remember the previous WRCars to do that? is this smt to do with the engines, or just the that they are revving the engines much higher now?

darkstar
29th July 2011, 11:23
i think its because the smaller engines need to be driven on higher rev´s. and you always need high rev´s to have good power, witch the 2 liter engines didnt need.

I think Van Merksteijn the younger has that honour. I'm sure the injured Eddy would testify to that too.

If you're talking about that Greece incident, it wasn't really even a "crash" - more an off I'd say. They just hit a huge stone (very heavy impact under the car) which launched the car off the line and while braking it slid to ditch and stopped.

Is Loeb only one who has rolled DS3? :D EDIT. No, Ogier did it too in Argentina.

Unlikely there'll be any photos or videos from testing at Walters Arena, the owners of the site do not like photographers there whilst testing is going on, as I've found out in the past!

Don't think so...

66.2 BANNED TESTING
For Manufacturers or WRC Teams registered in the Championship, testing (as defined in Article 2.19) is
banned:
...
66.2.3 On any road which is or might be used as a special stage of any current Championship rally.

Well, Sweet Lamb is like a special complex and it might be in the list of some manufacturers for that regulation point:
66.1.1 On a testing site proposed by the Manufacturer or WRC Team and notified to the FIA.

Sweet Lamb also has several kms of roads that are not on the WRGB stage, similarly the Walters (Arena) Complex. Provided the testing is done in agreement with FIA / Organisers that the testing does not use any of the stage route, even if it is just a cross roads 'going the other way' it can be used for pre event testing.

from the outside the car definitely looks as fast as the current WRCs....the agressive style of driving contributes to that in some extend, but i think if VW decided to enter the scene next year the car would be ready for at least a limited amount of rounds...

Aha.. That could be very well be, because it's like u say a special complex that over the whole year gets rallydrivers to test there (great stage with everything in it so perfect for getting a good setup for UK rallies)! Although it's very expensive to test there :p .

It was just a test so it doesn't need to be all perfect between co and pilot. And Timo is working for VW so that was the easiest way to have a co for Sainz for this tests. I think Sainz drove the first Dakar's for VW in French because of Perin? And KKK wasn't he mostly driving with English notes ? On the top level u need to know a bit your languages :D

True to that, and if he beats Matty Wilson even with this (and I think he will anyways those tires can't be so bad and with being the second official brand next year they need to have tires on a good level) than Matty will be even more ridiculed.
