Maybe checking there was no sign of the electrical / hydraulic issues on the test car, or a fix had been made and needed checking before it got shipped to Portugal ?

Bogie must've been the nearest available rally driver...

There is also quite complicated rules for test days in 2017. Some are for quest drivers and some are for the team and etc. So, it might be related to that.

All WRC teams are doing shakedowns near the HQ before going for rallies, tests, etc. For MSport different drivers are doing that, for Hyundai Abbring for example. MSport is always using Kirkbride airport for it, they are waiting for their own track to be build and then probably will be able to do all in Dovenby.

Bertelli crashed

Bertelli did not crash! He broke the steering because of the ruts, and in a tight and very slow corner he probably lost control of the car due to the broken steering. After half an hour, the mechanics fixed the car and they were able to drive it to the service point. I was there and the car did not have any exterior damage. It was just a minor incident but it was close to the end of the day, so they decided to finished the day a little bit earlier.

Meeke’s test in Mondim was stopped over one hour during afternoon for some tech repair. I’ve managed to see a few passes before that and the C3 looks amazing. It’s hard to notice the speed difference from the DS on the corners but overall the C3 looks much more flamboyant and it’s a rocket at the straights. Hope to see the i20 next Thursday. Definitely, ’17 WRC cars rocks!

They just need reliability in both the car (engine) and the driver (Meeke) for success.

yes its possible,or from the repeated runs the gravel is swept,and maybe it will be totally different at loose gravel at rally time,but when you watch several videos cant all the uploaders choose only the fast passes.
Except that the estimation even before Monte was right,from what we had seen from several videos.

The strong mountain winds and the long service pauses probably didn’t help, but I leaved Marão a bit disappointed with Neuville test. It’s fair to say that today stage was slower than the one used by Meeke last Tuesday, still the i20 seems to miss the ‘wildness’ of the C3. For sure a few tests runs means very little (specially without yet seeing the Fiesta and the Yaris), but from these two short sightings I got the feeling that the i20 is the ‘normal’ upgrade of a ’16 car, while the C3 is a sort of ‘UFO’ that landed in rally world!

Perhaps I’m exaggerating, or perhaps Mexico and Corsica day 1 were really the first indications that Meeke becomes too fast for competition every time he’s in full control of the C3...time will tell.

How did that actually work? Do they go like: "This is how Seb set it up and Ott prefers this and that and they said whatnot about it so now go and do some tweeks in the shakedown." ?

I don't do any racing or rallying myself but I think I couldn't help feeling hopelessly unprepared. It didn't seem to affect Elfyn much though.

They will use Santa Quitéria tomorrow only. Seixoso should be use by another manufacter soon, maybe Toyota. Friday M-Sport goes to north (Ponte de Lima) with Tänak. Ogier Saturday and Sunday. Evans should be there in monday there too.

Unffortunately i can't miss work tomorrow, so i will leave sooner and see (if possible) last 1h of tests :( Sunday will go to Ponte de Lima see champ ;) (Saturday is European Hillclimb round for me).

I don't do any racing or rallying myself but I think I couldn't help feeling hopelessly unprepared. It didn't seem to affect Elfyn much though.

Maybe testing just throws up even more possibilities to try or adjust and made more confusion. Perhaps Evans just forgot all that and just got on with driving what he had as fast as possible. Plus he did a lot of the gravel testing in the development.

Indeed, didn't he say they were going to homologate some new parts to make the Fiesta suit him better? Maybe when those parts are installed he will be more comfy. And to add more speculation he might just stay with M-Sport because he can see how long it takes to adapt to a new car and that he can shape next years' Fiesta this season already.

It was nice to get back to Sta. Quitéria, after so many years. Fair to say that the stage is a bit narrow, with the gravel banks limiting power slides, but it has both slow and fast sections that allowed seeing that the ’17 Fiesta (quite like the i20) has an impressive engine (torque wise, at least) and a pretty balanced chassis. It only lacks the wow factor of Meeke’s C3, but then, wow factors aren’t important for winning.

Btw, when and where will be Toyota testing next week?

I'll be following Ogier's tests this weekend. Maybe on Monday I'll go to see Evans (?) to the stage where Tanak has run today. Let's see how is the new stage which Ford will use tomorrow, because it has been raining all day (as you can see on Tanak's videos). I'll post some photos in the afternoon.
It's a shame Ogier not testing where he tested the Polo 2017 last year (where Ford has been today and where they will be on Monday).

Last year, Neuville (Sordo too) tested in the stage where Ogier was today. I didn't like too much where I saw him, so today I went to its second part. This is a proper stage, very similar to the roads of the Rally of Portugal (in fact, Ponte de Lima stage is less than one kilometre far from where M-Sport tested today). Very fast zones and surrounded by trees, soft gravel and a lot of dust. Due to the problems during the morning, I went there only in the afternoon. About 16-18 runs between 4 and 6 PM. These pics show some of them, not the best ones because those were the flat out places where it's better watch than click buttons. :)

The afternoon went normal, Ogier's problems ended in the morning. He was really angry when the car failed again. I heard some rumours about pieces of the car (demanded by him) that M-Sport was testing, which it's obvious aren't still ready to use. In the afternoon he did the usual four runs and stops between them (I believe there was only one occasion when he only run twice).
I forgot to ask if Evans will test tomorrow as it's believed. I suppose I'll know it before heading there in the afternoon.

If Neuville keeps his winning streak up and Ogier misses the podium a couple of times it is neck and neck already. Ogier really needs to find some more speed. What he has on his side is not making hasty errors and he only pushes when he has the confidence. A lot of it will be down to Neuville not losing his head like at the start of the season.

Evans did only four runs between 15:15 and 16:30. At that time, his test ended (half an hour before the scheduled time). When we arrived, he was complaining about spectators placed at dangerous places. The way I see it, both facts are related.
Moreover, we had a lot of problems to reach the stage. A GNR didn't allow us to enter through the usual access, sending people to another one some kilometres away. Fortunately, I know the old end of the historical stage Arcos-Portela, which we used. I hadn't walked that road since the nineties. I have many photos taken there, for example of KKK & Auriol with their Toyotas and Sainz & McRae on Subarus. This walk saved the day.

Took another ‘extended lunch break’, this time to see Hanninen, at the same spot Meeke tested last month (Toumilo). Good pace from Hanninen and good handling from the Yaris, even if the engine seemed to be the weaker from all the new cars.

After seeing Meeke, Neuville, Tanak and Haninen testing (I’m still trying to get the videos out from the damn phone…) in conditions that weren’t always similar, briefly I’d say that Meeke and the C3 were the most spectacular, but they lack Tanak’s Fiesta superior balance. Neuville’s i20 seemed close to Tanak/Fiesta level, while Hanninen and the Yaris looked overall a bit behind all competitors.

It’s just one fan opinion and many won’t surely agree, but what’s becoming obvious to everyone is that ’17 cars are the most fantastic cars WRC has known for a long time and they seriously can become a major boost for the series. For once, well done FIA!

The test ended due to the degradatión of the track. Tanak had been there in friday, 70% of the track was shared. Spectator problems were at 15:15, at the begin of the track. It was because that part is dangerous enough, and the amount of arriving spectators made more safe told them to go on the other access. The organizers did a great job and elfyn tested again until the track was definitely out of order.

Of course organizers did a great job. However, from my point of view, it’s difficult to tell that the stage was so damaged to finish a test (just to clarify, I clearly heard by walkie-talkie an organizer saying that Evans was complaining about the spectators). It’s true that Tanak and Evans shared part of the track, but a year ago Ogier and Latvala also shared two days in a row part of the same track under harder conditions without any problem. Without going any further, last Saturday I walked the whole stage (5.5 km) used by Ogier, finding many places worse than the kilometre and a half that I could see on Monday. C’mon, Evans is coming from Argentina!
As you know, Martini, there is a Galician proverb which says that green wood and young people all is smoke. Security is always the main point, though I think this is a case where we can use the proverb.

Took another ‘extended lunch break’, this time to see Hanninen, at the same spot Meeke tested last month (Toumilo). Good pace from Hanninen and good handling from the Yaris, even if the engine seemed to be the weaker from all the new cars.

After seeing Meeke, Neuville, Tanak and Haninen testing (I’m still trying to get the videos out from the damn phone…) in conditions that weren’t always similar, briefly I’d say that Meeke and the C3 were the most spectacular, but they lack Tanak’s Fiesta superior balance. Neuville’s i20 seemed close to Tanak/Fiesta level, while Hanninen and the Yaris looked overall a bit behind all competitors.

It’s just one fan opinion and many won’t surely agree, but what’s becoming obvious to everyone is that ’17 cars are the most fantastic cars WRC has known for a long time and they seriously can become a major boost for the series. For once, well done FIA!

Totally agree. However, the more I see the new cars the more I miss the Polo 2017. It was in another dimension. When I was last year watching Meeke testing with the C3, I had a talk with him. He had the same feelings, he expressed that no driver had a chance against that car.

Seriously? After 9 years of complete domination by Loeb/Citroen (apart from the two Manufacturer titles of Ford) and 4 years of endless wins and titles by Ogier/VW the best thing that could happen was VW getting out. I don't care how great the Polo would have been I'm just glad to FINALLY seeing some competition again after 13 agonisingly long years. Imagine Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen in another superior car. That not happening is the reason why I got enthusiastic about the WRC again.

Yep, the Polo looked strong and it’d be great to still have VW at WRC (5 manus is always better than 4) but I’m not that certain that Ogier and VW would still be dominating the series, at least the way they did in previous years. Hyundai progress was pretty visible during ’16, with Neuville matching Ogier pace (and points) at the second part of the season. The new i20, that seems to be currently the best car around, certainly would challenge the ’17 Polo and once Tanak and the Fiesta are pretty close to Neuville it’s not hard to imagine that things would be pretty animated. And there’s also the C3; clearly faster than the others (maybe including the Polo) when Meeke manages to stay in control of it!

We’ll never know how it’d actually be, but with so many fantastic stuff happening nowadays in WRC there’s little time to remember VW!

Although you are posting strong reasons which I partially agree with, it will never be better to keep a car like that in a garage than rallying. By the same token, Ogier staying at home would generate more enthusiasm on the WRC. Even more, gymnastic fans were fortunate when Loeb chose rallying instead of that Olympic sport. I still can remember those epic gymnastic events between 2004 and 2012 which he could have turned into a dictatorship... ;)

And the worst part is to see that the knowledge and experience VW has acquired during WRC years is now helping to grow a rival motorsport series…but don’t forget that it wasn’t the fans, the organizers and officials and neither the competitors that made VW pull out: the blame is on a small bunch of top VW executives that weren’t passionate about our sport, probably because they never care to really understand it.

I fully understand your frustration with this beast never seeing the light of day, but i think it doesn't outweigh the pros.

Ogier is now with the underdog team and isn't that great? He's having to properly fight. So many drivers are capable of winning rallies now and Ogier and Neuville will have an epic battle for the title, so do Hyundai and M-Sport. I'm on the edge of my seat and I love it.

Hardly, the blame is on VW being frauds who developped an emissions cheating software for their roadcars (the lot of them VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda) and they got caught. As a result of being sued and due to the millions in fines they had to pay they cut back on several motorsport actions (VW WRC, Audi LMS) because 1) they couldn't really afford it anymore, 2) their public image is shattered and a couple of motorsport programmes won't sway the broad public's opinion on them.
