any photos from Neuvilles off from Fin media?

Nothing, there were very few photographers/filmers in the test and no one captured the off. Also after the crash there was very strict "no" concerning cameras.

Ahhh I see in their testing they brought along a GOOD car so they'd something to aim for...some idea of how far away from perfection they are.

Interesting to see M-Sport guys using (most likely) event car in PET and not the regular test car... Maybe it has something to do with the facelift or money? Atleast Mikko complained in YLE Sport's interview that he hasn't gotten as much test days as it was discussed before the season.

M-Sport also has some challenges with the new Michelin LTX Force tyres, because of heavy demand, they have only 36 tyres for the entire PET stint of five days - that's nine sets of four tyres...

Are there any more info about this? Sounds interesting

"Two-time World Rally champion Marcus Gronholm has joined Volkswagen as a test driver to help develop the German manufacturer's Polo WRC.

The 46-year-old Finn recently took part in his first test with VW on gravel roads in southern France, and he is scheduled to drive the Polo again at selected tests.

Volkswagen motorsport director Jost Capito said: "We are delighted to have Marcus Gronholm on board as test driver for our WRC project.

"Marcus is one of the most successful and talented rally drivers around, and will support us with the further development of the Polo R WRC.

"Thanks to his in-depth understanding of technical aspects and his analytical skills, he will be able to provide our engineers with valuable input."

Gronholm's last WRC start came in 2010, when he made a one-off appearance for M-Sport in Rally Sweden.

"To get behind the wheel for the world championship-winning team is obviously a great opportunity for me," said Gronholm.

"I am really looking forward to having the chance to work on the further development of what is currently the best rally car out there."

Actually WRC needs exactly that... the best of the best (manufacturers, drivers, testers, broadcatsers) to work in it... the incompetence of the others is not VWs problem and should never be...

Aren't Toyota to decide about a possible WRC future by the end of September? If I read correctly, they just had a 4-day test with the Yaris.

I can't help but feel it won't be for nothing, and who knows how much more testing they're doing behind the scenes...

Also, does anyone know why George Donaldson will leave WRC Live after Australia...?

At 0.12 and 2.20 minutes of the video, you can see the new spec Fiesta WRC used since Finland, however the engine sounds completely different from a normal Fiesta WRC. Can this be the new in-house built engine from M-Sport?! Or is it different exhaust?

According to photos, the weird-sounding Fiesta of Valentino Rossi in Monza Show was PX14 HHY, chassis 43. Apparently the newest Fiesta WRC what there is, first rally was WRC Finland this year with Hirvonen.

Hirvonen also used the car in WRGB, so M-Sport would have had roughly 1,5 weeks to change the engine and transport the car to Italy.

Some time ago when I was at MSport they had there new body fiesta WRC with tuned up engine - turbo from Focus WRC I think, bigger restrictor, etc, etc. It was sounding nice!!!
I'm not telling Rossi had that engine in Monza, only telling what I saw and that in theory it is possible. Changing engine, together with exhaust (at least part of it), engine wiring loom, ECU, etc is not that big deal, easy to do during one work day.

according to a discussion on a fb italian rally page, clues were raised by Alessandro Bosca and famous co-driver Gigi Pirollo
Bosca wrote that he was behind Rossi and in a straight he smoked him in the extent of 20mt
The comment of Pirollo was insightful: he explained that the car and the engine are prepared only to race the km of Rally di Monza, instead his car driven by Capello was with "standard" engine. So a very very health engine but still "regular", it wil not last a wrc event but this rally show yes

Dimviii may correct me but I don't buy this story for two points.

1) To have significantly better acceleration which is clearly visible You need really big difference in power or the shape of the power curve. Last week I was on a circuit stage where cars accelerated on a straight from 2nd gear chicane. Fabia WRC made cca 20-30 meters advantage on 200 meters long straight over gr.N Impreza. Don't forget that a lot of that difference is due to higher exit speed from the chicane and faster gear changes, not only due to more powerful engine.

2) You can not tune restricted engine with limited turbo boost to have for example 30 Hp more by sacrificing some reliability. That is possible with engine where reliability is the primary power limitation such as Moto GP or Fomula 1 engines but not with something which complies with WRC regulations. At least I don't believe it is possible. Same goes to a completely different sound.

Honestly I haven't followed the previous discussion and therefore I don't want to judge Rossi's car in any way. What I wanted to say is that the explanation above sounds very unlikely to me.

dimviii
7th December 2014, 00:49
Mirek is right,in an engine with restrictor you cant produce significant extra power so he can ''smoke'' the other car as said .
All these inside regulations of course. The only gain can be is from ''leaner'' programm at ecu.We are talking about 5-10 bhp (best scenario because car is already ''pushed'' near limits) and these 10 bhp cant ''smoke'' of course any car. These 10 bhp can risk the engine.
Outside regulations with other fuels, bigger restrictors of course it is possible.

focus206
7th December 2014, 00:56
About Rossi/Monza, I can say that those suspicions about Rossi's car being different from the others are years old, every year is the same story. What was different this year is that in Rossi's team there were also 2 amateur drivers (so with other 2 supposely extra-tuned Fiestas), which performed MUCH better than what could have been expected from them. This is why, other than Kubica's comments, this year suspicions increased and this whole thing got even "international".

mousti
7th December 2014, 02:50
As we have seen Rossi's car was Hirvonen's car. Probably again prepared by MSport, a full spec "factory" Fiesta WRC with probably MSport engineers who tuned it perfect for a circuit, because Rossi brings alot of money with Monster, Oakley etc. His car against a private WRC with less budget, older engine etc. Will make a bit of difference in speed but besides that I think the thoughts about cheating are not right.

The key is that Rossi's Fiesta sound on Monza is diffrent to M-Sport cars in WRC. It's much louder and clearly rocketing from start much stronger. If Kubica between words given some thing to understand about it I think he has much more knowledge to say about that. He tested many WRC cars, and Fiesta WRC cars aswell so he knows how this Fiesta should behave

I can see from the video that it was very wet. Even with 100 hp more, you cannot see the difference by eye on such a conitions. Tyres are the main players there. Just a slightly different compound or texture can give so much extra acceleration/traction that you are able to see it by eye.

Just by removing silencer in the exhaust you're making sound of the WRC car completely different. No change in performance. But usually when car is louder/sounds more aggressive people think/have feeling that car is faster.

And like we already know MSport has installed silencers in their rallycars, what I find a pity.. So that could explain it all like br21 says, I already thought that too.

Every homologated rallycar car must have silencer in my opinion. There is a loudness limit in the regulations due to the fact that rallies take place on public roads.

I have slow vision.. ;-) ok,this comparision was a bit over the limit :-P

And about the silencer.. this time they were on the cricuit.. so no public roads and no such rules:-)

Is it allowed to have these led-lights? I heard that with Fiesta R5 there have been some issues on scrutineering. This can be found in FIA regulations:
http://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/regulation/file/261%20%2814-15%29_12.09.2014.pdf page 11.
"A maximum of 6 additional headlights are authorised, including the corresponding relays, on condition that this is accepted by the laws of the country.
If the series fog lamps are kept, they are counted as additional headlights."

In 2014 season he crashed in Portugal (retired), Germany (retired) and Wales (lost time). If compared to his team mate Ogier, he crashed in Sweden (lost time) and Germany (twice, retired both times). Both had issues in other rallies too, but not to my recollection crashes. So just to set the record straight, he does not crash all the time. He does crash, but this is a sport of rallying.

VW en route to Monte Carlo 2015
BY TRAXX - 19/12/2014

The Volkswagen team today ended a week of preparation for testing at the Monte Carlo. Last Sunday, Andreas Mikkelsen served aboard the Polo R WRC version 2014 on a special day in the Alpes de Haute Provence. The Norwegian was unconvincing, the restraint on a narrow path that did not put in trust. The 2015 version of the Polo will be a very small exit that day. Monday is Sébastien Ogier who took the wheel of the Polo. This time, it is mostly about the version 2015 that the French will make his runs for 2 days. The first was rather on dry ground while the second was in moisture. On Monday, the man of the country went on the runs to travel more than 200km in the day. Julien Ingrassia, still recovering from his latest shoulder operation is Gilles De Turckheim copilotait that the world champion.

Wednesday, it was the turn of Jari-Matti Latvala on the same basis as Mikkelsen. In the first part of the morning, the runs were widely spaced, unconvincing passages, the long wait for the audience. Around noon, the first flakes began to fall. The ground was already fat, it becomes slippery. In early afternoon, the snow began to stand on the floor, large portions was covered with a thin layer of snow. Jarri-Matti Latvala continued by increasing the frequency of passages, the steering is sharp, despite the difficult conditions, we finally have the impression of seeing a quick car. Snowfall does not cease, the snow gradually begins to accumulate on the road. Since the beginning of the afternoon, the Finnish is snow tires (without nails) on ground more slippery, it is increasingly the attack. An early warning before us it comes out a little wide of a light rapid curve takes a long rope and too early before the plant puts a hand brake stroke to get out, good move! On the next run, the Polo will not get to our observation point, you hear the engine of the Polo cut just after impact. In a fast right after a left Latvala lost the rear of the car that licks the slope. He explains, still in the car after several meters across, seeing that he could not resolve the situation, he decided to aim for between 2 trees on the other side of the road. Polo cuts down a tree then stops on another ten meters in low-cons of the road. The crew is not affected, but the Polo well banged up. If riding tire was adapted settings was not. With an aggressive setup for a dry road, the Polo was very vivid. It is only 16h but the day ended on the stage. In terms of assistance, we will work until midnight on the last car it ready for the next day.

New day, new special: the snow is gone but the ground is very wet. Unlike the previous passages keep coming with an attack early in the day. The edge of the road, it's nice to see. In fast combos, you can see an agile car and very accurate. In a row by 5/6, the Polo comes in a prematurely after a string a bit wide output, a flick of the steering wheel and she finds herself immediately on track smoothly without drifting, without forcing. A little further, the pin is wider than the day before, it leaves the possibility of a wider operation which the Polo spring with a nice grip. While the soil is very fat, self manages to wrest free skate to raise. The passages keep coming up a new incident. From the first left after a rolling start the Polo is hitting the outside wall. The front right damper passes through the cup, the rear suspension strikes right also. Polo placed on the ground freezes in the middle of the road. No problem for the crew, but Jari-Matti Latvala is furious when he communicates with his team by radio. He later explained that he was not informed him that new tires were mounted on the car. The road before the test base not to heat the tires, cold and not lapped gums have propelled the Polo in the first wall. The rest of the day, he routinely perform a heating run before taking off full speed. But the lunch break was long: 4 hours of work on the car. Finland will then be only a few day passes before enchainer night.

Today is Andreas Mikkelsen who is back at the wheel of the Polo on the basis used by Ogier on his second day.

VW seems clearly to be the most advanced team for next year. His 2015 self running for months, after the development phase, the team was able to move to the finest setting for the first round of next season. On the model with the livery (Version 2015), we could see appear some aero modifications: small patches on the front bumper and wheel arches and a new rear spoiler. It loses its vertical fins (retrieved by the Citroën fin seen in tests in Portugal !!) and down a little less on the sides. In addition to these external aspects, like all others, Polo offers changing relationship with a pallet. The team putting priority on reliability, FX Demaison was first asked to design a single system by abandoning the "manual" leverage used until this year. So he put pressure on his technical team to achieve a seamless system because without backup. Then finally, the lever remains present in aid of the pallet system. To position ballast in context, the team working on the weight of the different components. The new regulation has eased the engine. The box is more compact. Work has also been done on the transmission.

FX Demaison: "The car is the same, the model is the same, the frame is the same, the shell is the same and the arch is the same, except the harness ties for comfort reasons of crew. Small details change. The regulation allows us to have a slightly lighter engine. The transmission is optimized because, in this area too, the constraints have been liberalized. The gearbox will be better suited to our car, more compact, but not lighter since the minimum weight is observed. »

We are on your second day of testing for Monte Carlo, what impressions of these tests?
It was not the best beginning for these tests Monte Carlo, we're out on the first day, but we managed to repair for the second day. The conditions were good the first day because it was dry then it became very difficult. I am very satisfied because we could try different kinds of tires on snow. It was very interesting, we 170kms. On the second day, the road is wider with more constant conditions: wet. More generally, I am very satisfied with the behavior of the car, she very very good driver and the reactions are good. It is generally very good, there are some details to improve.

This is not the first time that the new car is used in trials, but this is the first meeting to prepare a rally outside development. Is it faster?
We are now focused on the new car, there is more work on the old. The goal is that it is faster, but for the moment I can not give figures. When working on a new car is to be faster. It's December in the Alps, it's more to get a general idea and then back before the rally for finer adjustments.

The steering wheel gearshift is not a novelty in the WRC, you've used on the Focus, is that it changes the way of driving?
I have used this system so come back is nice. I have no problem with that, for me it was more difficult with the mechanical lever. In some situations, a brake, this may be better to use the lever. But I really have no problem using this automatic system that works really well.

Is it interesting to have both hands on the wheel?
Yes, it's easier. For example, if it is on asphalt, having a chord, if changing a ratio and that it is the part on a slippery, it is found to react with one hand. Now, you keep both hands on the wheel, if we get on a slippery area, it is best to correct.

What is the best development of this new car?
For me, I think this is the shift driving. Report really is changing very fast. (Tchoou tchoouuu tchouu tchouu!) It's really fast. The new car is very good on asphalt. I feel like in a circuit car.

Do you think you can beat Sebastien Ogier at the Monte-Carlo?
This is his home rally and there will also Sébastien Loeb. Both are hard to beat. I finished 5th in 2014, if I finished in the top three, I'll be really happy with this season.

What is your goal for next year? Title of course?
It's starting to make a point that I am in the rally so it's really what I want: to win the championship!

To win the championship, you have to beat Sebastien Ogier ...
Yes, you have to fight it and have a good season. It is 2 times world champion, it is very hard to beat, I think he wants 3rd title. It will be very hard, but that's why I'm here: we work and we fight.

Do you think these two outputs when testing is a kind of pressure before the time in your battle with Ogier?
No, no .... I know my limits now!

Are you sure?
Yes I Do!

Most of the shots they use in their daily WRC videos are the same as used in the footage of the regular broadcasts...

You've got a bucket full of talents there in Estonia let alone WRC, what's your countries' secret??
You have to stay up whole season busy times ahead with Karl Kruuda , Sander Pärn and Ott Tanak!

i dont know whats our secret, i have also thought about it, lol. But yeah we've always had great talents here since the word "rally" is known i think.

Like you said busy times with Tänak, Pärn, Kruuda, and also Timmu Kõrge is putting his budget together for competing ERC.

Gonna be great season for us Estonians:)

The secret as for Finland is fast swaving gravel roads used for rallies. That makes men out of boys driving on 5th and 6 th gear all the time. In difference from Sweden using very often small twisty roads even in championship rallies.

Ounin

That's obvious I know that, but you must have an extraordinary good rally climate to persuade sponsors with enough budgets to get started, all depends on popularity of Rally, what's the secret about that
