Here's what [may have] really happened:
The plane was hijacked.
And shot down by China/US/Malaysia instead of being allowed to be used as a 'weapon'?
A massive coverup follows.

Lowest point was probably when they had to put the top class drivers to run RX2e cars for the final races of the season, after the whole fire on the Lancias drama.
