Equal to what? If Tänak retired it means the rubber didn't stay on the rim. That is automatic retirement per rules (if stewards don't pretend blindness like with Solberg in Hungary).

I find that slightly ridiculous - he managed to get to service - but has to retire.....

Such has been the rule for at least a decade now. He's far from being the first one.
