Kosovo - this one is slightly questionable as it is not recognised by quite a few UN members i think this was in 2008 or 2009
Maybe Serbia or Montenegro as they were one state that split in half not sure of the date but possibly in the mid 00's

Could it be Edwards Air Base, California which has an area of 470 square miles? Or is there a bigger one in Russia or China?

I assume you mean largest commercial airport?
In terms of area (hectares), I believe Denver International in Colorado is largest.
In terms of annual passenger volume I would have thought Heathrow, but that sounds too easy.
