In 1994 he was going for the title, started by winning Monte Carlo, but had a road accident in a friends F40 and broke his legs which caused him to miss a lot of the season. 93/94 was his best period driving wise and he could have done it, personally I think he would have missed out anyway as the Toyota and Subaru were starting to out develop Ford with stuff like the active diffs etc, although Makinen did win 1000 Lakes in a one-off factory drive.
Shame he didn’t get the chance as by ‘95 the Ford team was a not run by the factory and wasn’t really competitive and after that he went back to French Championship with Peugeot and the 306 Maxi.
