Do not worry about the weather, region has 50+ cm of snow right now and more is coming, some melting during the day (espescially when it is sun-induced) and freezing overnight is doing only good. Recent over -20 degrees on the ground has accumulated a lot of cold in the ground, so, melting on the top ends with freezing below. That rain may clean some asphalt roads but non-salted local roads, narrow, with high snow-walls on the sides... only thing is that some of those snowpiles will be a bit icy and a bit more than usual number of bumpers are needed ;) Ice surface can be a bit uneven also.
Well, and Karlstad, during most of the recent events, there was only ice they created with some watering, not much difference then :P
And about the predictability, it is between 5-25% for next week, so not very high :P But weather tends to repeat itself, this winter in this region has been snowy, and often on minus side with short warmer periods, keep it in your mind when looking how the forecasts are changing;)

Exactly. I have been to 15+ Sweden rounds. This year it looks very good actually. with lots of rain next monday followed by lots of new snow and minus temps again making a good ice basis again on the road. And with the current snow debt already pretty solid I expect it to be perfect conditions for he rally. It takes a long time for that snow to disappear.

To have some context for this, it's only for WRC2(Pro) competitors, who are not allowed to test in the country of the next rally three weeks preceding the event. So Swedish and Norwegian drivers must now go to Finland for their Rally Sweden tests.

It says P2 and P3 drivers in the rules so that means even JWRC. M-Sport had to do their JWRC test in Norway a couple weeks back

New stages?
Myrvold

New stages?
Yup. Seems like it. FIA wants certain stuff. "We will swap stages that doesn't have an arena, or anything of big value to us". "We need to find new forest stages to use, mainly on the Friday but also Saturday and Sunday"
Too bad really, as the Norwegian stages have been among the best in Sweden, both technically and condition-wise. But there are traditional rally stages, and not "arena stages".
Ugh :(
AnttiL

Torsby, Hagfors and Likenäs have an ”arena”
tommeke_B
6th February 2019, 16:29
The part before the finish of Svullrya is packed with people, also has big parking possibilities etc, could be considered an arena. Next to that they could bring back Kirkenaer, which was a real arena-stage and actually not boring at all. :)

Arena stages... wow have they gone mad?
Calm down. In rally sweden just the bigger spectator places like Colins Crest Arena, Torsby Arena or the finish of Hagfors stage at the old ski slope etc. are called Arena.
For sure they want to keep this places. No one is talking about full arena stages - dont make anything up from nothing.
After some years with nearly identical itinerary, some change for 2020 is very positive.

What was it? Rally ending super-specials?
Giving up classic events in pursuit of new money, auctioning events around the world and bloating the calendar instead of focusing on the things that actually make the sport iconic. Thinking they were bigger than Monte Carlo being the epitome of it. But wrong thread, I'm looking forward to Sweden this year and hopefully for many more.
But yes, rally ending super specials were awful too.

Arena stages... wow have they gone mad?
Like tc10a says, it's not a whole stage, in an arena. It's what they call a stage with an arena.
Here you can see the stages with and arena https://rallysweden.com/en/the-race/
So they would have to swap all Norwegian stages on Friday (so keep Torsby, that's it), swap Rämmen on Saturday and Likenäs on Sunday.
Though I do agree with tommeke the end of Svullrya can be considered an arena (and the spot I've been at for the last years are getting fuller and fuller!)

It's more for people who goes there to have a drink and enjoy the athmosphere. And by enjoying the atmosphere I mean have a lot of drinks. But it is not for spectating a rally. More like an open air festival.

Likenäs has also the rallycross part in the beginning, that counts as an arena, right?
In Finland we also have these large official spectator areas which an be considered as arenas, the most famous of them the Kakaristo junction. For sure it's nice for the casual fan or a tourist, but for the hardcore fans it's better to pick a quieter place in the forest. Like cali said, it's more of a festival, lots of drunk people who don't even care so much for the competition...

The long term forecasts are still to be changed, but let's speculate. Right now it looks like there won't be snowfall during the whole rally week, especially not during Friday. If we assume we get some plus degrees and rain on the weekend, then some -8°C days before the rally and no fresh snow, that would mean a good ice base for the roads. This would favour the first car on the road, right? The studs would have a direct contact to the ice, whereas all the next cars would have to deal with various amounts of loose snow/slush on top of the ice?

I remember very clearly 2017 Rally Sweden, when yrno forecast promised some + degrees throughout the whole rally, but in fact it hit the very first night -17 C and stayed well below the zero during the event.

Either we send the package to where you are staying in Sweden
or I’ll add you to the list which allow you to pick them up at any of the Rally-sites from our staff.

It's quite a lot more in the terrain this year, reason Lesjöfors was cancelled in 2016 was that the 10-15cm deep ruts in the gravel froze before they had time to scrape it, I'm sure there would have been no problem to run all stages twice in the end.
I checked the weather in 2016 and it was 10-15 days of around +5 then so i think it should be fine this year.

Funny looking at 2003+ Focus. When introduced it had so massive aero relative to the cars of the era.
Now after watching the 2017 WRC for two years it looks almost like an R5 car, or maybe not even that considering C3 R5 and the like..

Your "opinion" of which service is best is not relevant. What is relevant is your inability to understand what I wrote or to say "Yes you are correct, we are looking at two different sources of information".
As for the weather situation, I guess it's mixed signals and it makes everyone (including me) a bit uneasy, understandably. SNevertheless, the rally will be brilliant with the lineup we have! :D

so rallying week finally.
Since we still dont know the exact weather, then at the moment its hard to predict who is gonna be at the top but looking the previous years, the guys should be the usual ones, Ogier, Neuville, Tänak, Latvala. Loeb, Lappi and Mikkelsen too i guess.
Neuville will be interesting to watch, two years in a row he has had excellent starting position but this time he is starting at the front, but he is always fast, whatever position he is starting at.
Meeke showed great speed in Monte but Sweden has been a nightmare for him. Every result i checked from the past, he has never finished this rally without trouble.
Lets hope we will have a nice weather and conditions, which is the main thing.

11th February 2019, 15:44
Yep Meeke has had a nightmare in Sweden every time he's tackled the event. I can't see him either matching the pace of Tanak and Latvala, or finishing solidly. Can't see Latvala or Tanak not being among the leaders, unless Latvala caves in mentally for some reason.
Anyone of the 3 Hyundai's could/ should fight for the win depending on conditions. The car is superb in Sweden - pressure on Mikkelsen following a poor start to the season and it being his home rally.
Citroen will be interesting - the car was awful here in 2017 but Ostberg and particularly Breen were fast last year (helped by road position initially, but then Breen outpaced Mikkelsen and finished 2nd). Not sure what to expect with Lappi, but favourable road position and he could be near the front after the first day at least.
Msport - hoping to see some pace at least from Tidemand after a cautious Monte. And especially want to see more from Suninen - this rally and Finland are events he should've been targeting at the start of the year. As for Evans, he's in the same boat as Mikkelsen - pressure on him from a bad season and then a poor start in Monte this year. Unfortunately I can't see him doing anything in Sweden, whereas Mikkelsen I can see doing well. Honestly wouldn't surprise me if Evans gets dropped before the end of the season for Breen or Paddon...

Well Evans had good rally in Sweden last 2 years (of course Ogier and Tanak had nightmare last year, but still very good results for Evans). Agree about Tidemand and Suninen. Hopefully it'll be a good rally for M-Sport.

From what I remember is hours walk and poor visibility if you are not there at least 3/4 hours before stage start. That spot has become like a stadium with folks practically living there in tents and closing off the best spots to view.

First option has two big parking areas, then take ATV ride to the stage, non stop running, 40-50 sek if I remember correctly. Second option is tricky, we managed to drive the road quite close last year but there is only roadside parking available and the walking distance really depends from how many cars are there parked before your arrival.

First place and its just about a 20 minutes walk from the big road to colins crest. Was there last year and had no problem finding a perfect place about 1 hour before the start of stage. There are plenty of people but because of the campingsite-like area there is much space between. I have left it out for about 7 years as I feared also the mass of people - but it was a very good decision to go there last year. Simply crazy and lots of action. Will probably do it again this year.

Okay, that's great, thank you. I plan to drive to the car park that is closest ( link one in my original post ) for an hour before stage start and then hope to catch the ATV or walk to 20 minutes – if I understand correctly.

If you go there from Torsby try not to drive past the stage end as it's a complete chaos down there after they shortened the stage, better to drive around north past the start i think.
Road up there is a bit narrow so seen several getting stuck in the deep ditch and much more people now than before.

NA 01 is for wrc2 ,same number studs as Ice North 3 which is for wrc cars. The only difference is that tyres for wrc2 protrudes 1 mm more than these for wrc cars(6,5mm vs 7,5mm)

Not if you consider there was a bunch of R5 cars (WRC 2 NOT plus) in addition between 2 and 3 run for Neuville, first 2 runs is more equal for all WRC and WRC 2+ three or more runs is WRC 2 as well in the mix so lots of more cars have been on the stage now

Well, Tidemand favourite then... :)Mikkelsen and Lappi should really take advantage. Mikkelsen really needs to considering the poor form he's in and then the bad start in Monte. There's no excuses here - home rally, superb car in these conditions, seemingly good road position and a good previous record here.
Meanwhile we saw last year what Ostberg did in the c3 and especially Breen - so maybe Lappi can use the road order advantage and get himself into the fight at the front too.
Evans and Suninen maybe likewise on day 1, would be nice to see a Ford up there. Don't think it'll be Pontus somehow though ;)

Shakedown time matters to Suninen:
Sixth fastest time on Shakedown is a good confirmation that we have found nice set-up for these conditions in @RallySweden - starting tonight at 20.08 local time. https://t.co/PJdvCk3QG5

Really interesting rally starting soon. I believe Lappi, Mikkelsen and Suninen can really fight for podium positions. Ott and JML will be really fast, now it's really time for JML to fight for his positions in the team. On SD Neuville was faster than I expected.
What I'm really waiting is WRC2 battle. Mads is favorite with his experience, however I expect Kalle to be fastest WRC2 in most of stages. Waiting nice fight from Pietarinen, Lindholm, Pieniazek and Greensmith.

Meeke went of on a long righthander with a big bump just before. Hyundais jumped much more than the other cars. A lot of goof passes, nice shakedown!
It was a great spot, i also was there =)

Weird, he comes in view with things hanging a little bit off the left rear corner. Does a touch on that corner again when we see him and then goes off in next corner also on that side. Something wrong with that side of the car/tire at that moment or he just doesn't like right turns ? (like those Lappi crashes on tarmac).

Clearly the SS has become a little quicker the more cars drive there, Berglund is normally not as fast as Kristoffersson and certainly not up amongst Rovanperä/Solberg. That makes Pietarinens run so much more impressive.
The Lindholm/Veiby/Bergkvist times also prove it.

Well, then there are WRC cars proving the opposite again. But yeah, it was more about being wreckless that brought you the best time in these rough conditions.

Well naah, Grönholm/Loeb shouldn't be anywhere close to Neuville/Ogier. Huttunen quicker than Tidemand/Evans? Not likely. It still proves that it is faster now than earlier.
But ok, with the wrecklessness you have a point.

Nope. Doing JWRC this year and two races in ERC on R5 as a prize drive from last year U23 win.

Really challenging to compare times between first WRC2 cars and cars after WRC.
Neuville did solid run, however today he did benefit from road position. After tomorrow he and Ogier will be quite far from rally leader.
Pietarinen had a great first stage even though started quite early.
