Just watched the OB of Latvala and the dust from Ostberg wasnt very bad. Maybe two places it looked a bit thick but it wasnt like he was following directly behind Mads. It was distracting but not enough to get any time back from the Stewards I think..

All I've ever heard Latvala say in the face of adversity was "ei voi ella totta" (I think it's spelled that way)

"This can't be true". That's what he says often indeed.

I also love it that Lappi/Ferm are using the same note as Mäkinen/Harjanne did, "pirun pitkä" which is used for a very long corner, but it's directly translated as "damn long"

Fast Eddie WRC

To be fair to him, if the delay situation when Neuville got time back had never happened, Latvala wouldn't be making an issue of it on this rally. Unfortunately a precedent has been set.

Do Lappi and Hanninen use descriptive pacenotes or numeric ones? I know Latvala uses 1-7(6?) pacenotes from least to sharpest.

Now that we're at it, what system do other drivers use? Any oddities?

Interesting find! Has Tommi made those notes for him now or is it something they've always had?

Really strange mistake by Paddon, he just turns in too early in like the 2nd real corner of the stage. In a way similar to the Argentina roll, even though at completely different speed.

Yes, very strange, too late on the braking at previous corner I guess.

Nooooo Paddon. You needed this victory.. Im a little bit worried Hyundai will change their line up for next year if he keeps going on like this.

Paddon and Reeves (Paddon's gravel note driver) for APRC in Hyundai R5's for '18 to give the MRF Skodas some competition and reduce the amount of 'free' media publicity Skoda are getting in this part of the world from the MRF team.

Do Lappi and Hanninen use descriptive pacenotes or numeric ones? I know Latvala uses 1-7(6?) pacenotes from least to sharpest. Both use descriptive pacenotes.

I think sharpest corner (proper hairpin) for Latvala is 8.

NickRally
11th June 2017, 02:04
That's probably pointing to mapping of center differential.

I would be very surprised if it is software related and will be more inclined to believe it is something to do with a piece of hardware.

Zeakiwi
11th June 2017, 02:54
Probably, but Mikkel need more testing km, to test several centerdiff options.
This is more or less same scenario as Ogier coming to Ford, centerdiff did nor suite him at all, but now it is ok.

The C3 has hydraulically controlled? centre diff according to this https://www.topspeed.com/cars/citroen/2017-citroen-c3-wrc-ar175474.html could the valving/ clutch be set to work in a narrow window and needs different hydraulic valving/ clutch settings to have the car work in a wider window/ different driving style??

Do Lappi and Hanninen use descriptive pacenotes or numeric ones? I know Latvala uses 1-7(6?) pacenotes from least to sharpest.

They both use descriptive ones. Latvala/Anttila are a bit of an exception for using numeric pace note in Finnish.

Power Stage betting will be interesting. Difficult to say if it was an advantage to run first, since both Latvala and Tanak had issues (stall and dust inside cockpit). PS could yield a surprise.

"Factory" Fords are the only cars without issues this weekend.
Hyundai with brakes for Neuville and turbo for Sordo.

Toyota with brakes overheating (same as Mexico) and 2x steering for Juho.

Great!Consecutive wins for Ford for the first time since 2009.An excellent first win for Tanak, who now has a realistic outsider's chance for the title.Ogier was nowhere, but he managed to really limit his loses. What a lucky guy he is.Lappi is a rising star.Positive rally for the Finnish village team overall. Not so good for Hyundai with Neuville running his mouth a bit, Paddon crashing twice and many problems for Sordo. And the least we talk about Citroen, the better...And the next two rallyes with lots of bumps and high speeds may be even worse for them...

Well done to Ott, know he has been waiting for this moment for the past 2 years now, nice to see him finally on the top step of the podium, hope he will challenge for honors again next in his favorite rally & continue with his run of consistency. Also I must point out Lappi, what a drive, what a driver, only his 2nd time in a World Rally Car, finishing 4th ahead of Ogier (when the road position on the last 2 days was on the same level playing field) & took of his power stage win. Hope to see him challenge for a podium come the end of the year. Difficult stages ahead of everyone now as we are heading to the 2 fastest rallies in the calendar which are followed by a sudden switch to tarmac, we have got a really interesting season on our hands. Even if Ogier will take the title this year at least it won't be decided in Germany or Spain, they won't give it to him that easy.
On a less positive note, Citroen have got massive work to do if they want to stand any chance this year.

Yes, but look at the average age of WRC drivers. It is so much based on experience. It's not like F1 where kids like Verstappen can walk in and do a job straight away. Lappi is 26 and is considered very young. Suninen will make his WRC debut in Poland at the age of 23 and he only gets two drives this year. He'll spend the next few years predominantly in WRC2 too unless he comes in and does a surprise monster job.

Look at Paddon (30), Tanak (29) and Evans (27) still maturing.

Would be very extreme. Risky to give a young kid so much pressure. Thinking of Max Verstappen, but for circuit racing the tracks remain the same for each place, in the WRC every km is unique and Kalle still needs a lot of time.

All these conventional arguments don't really apply to a guy who is winning rallies in an R5 car at 16! Age is just a number - the reason all these guys you list are getting results around 30 is because that's how long it took them to gain the experience and speed to get there. It's not a case where team managers were waiting until drivers hit 25 before hiring them.

Anyway this is OT - I'm not saying Citroen should start reaching out to team Kalle just yet.

I think that at the age of 17, if he has a legal driving license, he can compete everywhere. Kruuda competed in several events at the age of 17 (for example Ypres). Also Pieterjanmichiel Cracco (Belgian, but got an Estonian driving license) did WRC Portugal at the age of 17. But we're going off-topic...

I went to Sardinia, but returned this morning already, so saw shakedown, show stage, friday and saturday. Very nice event, as always. Didn't take much pictures, but I'll try to link a small album tomorrow, together with some brief review.

We did really important steps before Portugal, we were not competitive in Mexico or Argentina and we have understood other things in other areas so the car was really competitive here. It is looking very positive for all the team. Lappi was driving very well, also Hanninen was driving well before the power steering problems but we do have one problem because I said on the interview on Saturday that I would stop my driving if I did not get the time benefit. I did not get it and I am a person that stands behind my words. The situation is this; I am in the middle of the season and have never been so close to the championship leader, even if I am in forth position. I would not really want to stop now when things are looking good. I must apologise for my words but you have to understand that there is lots of passion for this sport and I want to do well so this is why I was a bit frustrated. Sorry about that

They're quite in-place for the next 2 rallies with their famous hit "Aerials", aren't they?

Great rally, great result!

I have been working with Ott since 2011 Germany and today was just........ no words, I am very, very happy !:) I posted last forecast for the team eraly in the morning and I was scheduled to fly from Tallinn to Berlin at 13:50 (Estonian time), today, luckily, plane was delayed 20 minutes (thank you AirBaltic for being consistent with your delays) and 20 seconds before taking off and switching my phone to flight mode, I got the mesage from the team - "Ott won !":):):):):)

I must say that this is a great team work. M-Sport might have the smallest budget, they might not have separate people for each task, they might noth have fancy caps or posters for the fans.. but what I have seen, they work really closely as a team. Most of the people are not working for the money only, they work with a passion and for the passion. I have talk to the person who is driving the truck, sets up service park and helps with quarding overnight, opens the gates for VIP-s and quests and he is really proud about his work! He feels as an important part of the team. I have seen how Julien is shaking everybodies hand in sevice park in the morning.. This is really good example how the team has grown together as a family. I think, this is one of the reaons behind their success in this season. I am just looking and wondering about one other team where one star driver is playing down his car and complaining mehcanical issues stage, by stage, day by day. this is not team spirit. They have something to learn from M-Sport.

I will take a second beer now :)

One thing that must be definitely noted here. Big, big, big, big, big credits to Toyota. Clerck of the course did nothing related to Latvalas dust problem and sportingly, Toyota decided not to ask to review his stage time. This is great rally spirit, this is rally :) Thank you Tommi, you are GREAT for the rally!

Wow. His attitude is a bit scary. It makes it sound like he's getting frustrated with the title again. I don't want him to go back to 2016!

Another crazy rally!

The good: Tanak, whole Toyota team, Sordo's good pace on gravel, championship fight got tightened, saturday Red Bull tv production
The bad: Citroen car, Meeke, Paddon, wrcplus live stages commentary (seemed especially horrible after comparing it to Red Bull on saturday)

Matton finally making some "corrections" is also good and a break rally will probably help Meeke. After the SSS on thursday the first thing he said was he put the previous rallies out of his mind. Except he didn't and mentioning it at the first chance he got shows it. After that quote i was sure he would crash but it's now clear the car is the most set up sensitive by far of all '17 machines so can't put all blame on him.

Also, for me, Neuville has surpassed Ogier as biggest whiner by far.

Also, for me, Neuville has surpassed Ogier as biggest whiner by far.

He has become my villain, the attitude of a 3-year-old, the ego of a sociopath and a temper shorter than a yardstick in a black hole.

A very gifted driver without a doubt, but also a properly unlikeable character.

Huge congrats to Tanak and Jarveoja for their victory; first of many, surely. A big applause to EstWRC, bluuford and the other Estonian fans for their continuous support to Tanak, here on the forum and also on WRC stages, waving the nice looking Estonian flags!

Also huge congrats to Lappi for his pace and stage wins. I’ve said a long time ago: he’s champ material!

No need to be that harsh Watson. WRC isn't a popularity contest; we must praise drivers for their talent and forgive possible character flaws, having in mind the huge pressure they're submitted.
