1:38 at SS12 Ogier has quite some off-road excursion, slow speed but still.

Great success indeed, this time at least un-rollable, maybe damaged the cage.:(

Seems like Meeke is in full playstation mode in 2017 year, it was his 7th crash in five rounds, including testing.. Now I know why they brought only two cars here, Meeke needed three of them for this event :P Hope he can take it more reasonably from now on..

Just back from the Service Park, what a frantic place! Latvala gave away his Toyota cap to some guy who gave him an Argentine flag with his family's name on it. At the same time, I waved, he waved back, and I almost peed from the excitement.

A couple of oddities: Citroën's tents were completely empty and void of people; their people were snooping around the Toyota garage. Also, Hyundai began giving away cans of Pringles and people went mad. Almost got trampled on my way out...

What a great and exciting rally.
Go Neuville.

Meeke fucks it up again... On the bright side...he didn't lose his diffuser. M-Sport should ask Citroen for some tips on how to mount it properly.

Now considering Meeke's involvement in development of Dirt Rally, I'm starting to understand why it's so easy to roll your car in the game.

i want the arab team to pack up and get the hell out... pity for breen but thats life.

I prefer the french version of citroen and not the joke they present us with the last few years, and they should get that bloatfaced paper champ with them and let someone with a clue run toyota.

its sad because in testing the car looked ok.

Meeke's off is not in the highlights and the onboard is not on. Fearing it will end like Hanninen's 3rd day off in Corsica, no vids and no info.

Anyway the corner where it happened is at 4:20 on Neuville's onboard from same stage. Fast wide and smooth corner. Has to be different "setup issue" to blame on then. (Citroen's explanation of the SS4 one).

Crashes should not be the first priority in 90 sec highlights. Especially when it's not the leader who crashed.

game over for both him & the team, hard to see them bounce back from last place in the champ. Meeke himself said, they will continue to develop the car for next year, hopefully they'll bring Mikkelsen (& replace Lefebvre) to help them regain at least one of the titles next year.

However, I am not sure anymore if it is still game over, maybe I was wrong, initial news was that no more start, but it is not confirmed.

The front left of that C3 doesn't look very nice.

The fall of Citroen is quite impressive tbh, from dominating for 10 years to not being able to compete with VW to now being clearly last in manufacturers even against newcomer Toyota who has basically 1 driver.

At least the C3 doesn't seem far back in terms of speed, one then has to question their driver policy.

Yeah that policy of having the best driver in the world in their car really did work I guess. Their new policy of not having that = less successful.

In fairness they did basically give up on the WRC for a few years ('14/'15/'16).

Maybe. You don't think they thought they were going to win the title with Hirvonen going into that season?

Still makes me laugh that VW's entire stated aim for 2013 was to 'fight for podiums'.

mknight
30th April 2017, 10:29
And then Citroen spend most of 2016 preparing for this year. Isn't working out very well.

After VW quit they could push hard for Ogier, tbh it didn't seem they were that much interested. Certainly from Matton's comments, and they were not interested at all in the other two.

Then again just two days ago I could read on this very thread how Meeke is the fastest driver in WRC, oh well.

itix
30th April 2017, 10:30
To be fair... They haven't really had a great driver for a while. Loeb left and they only got Hirvonen who was on his way out both in form and in sprit.

There were hopes that Meeke had stopped crashing but those have been thoroughly crushed.

Matton told Autosport: "I have the driver line-up for next year."

"All I will say is that if Sebastien Ogier gives me a call I will answer and we will have a chat, but there's no question about changing my driver line-up for next season."

"I would not say I would not take the call from Jari-Matti Latvala or Andreas Mikkelsen, of course I will - I am a polite guy!

"But the story is different for them: they are not French and they don't have the world title."

Fastest no, but one of the trio Ogier, him & Neuville. However his problem is not the speed, he has to manage it somehow though, even risking to be slightly slower, that would pay off much more than pure speed.

this sounded so EGO to me back then and sounds even more now and man how it hurts them...they should have cancelled Lefebvres contract and got Latvala or Mikkelsen...

Meeke will never get consistent, he just doesnt seem to learn but at least he is fast. Already before the rally he told Becsy in an interview that he will go flat out and i was like this isnt ending well. This isnt a rally where you go flat out all the time and now to crash 2 times in a rally.

Breen is great talent and future and he is rightfully in the team.

But they need someone instead of Lefebvre and they need someone fast.

I totaly agree whit your post.

Lefebvre out, Mikkelsen in. Breen getting more expieriance for all wrc rounds, could mean he'll be a victory contender in 2018.

I think Neuville can be as fast as Meeke (was in the past) here in Argentinia, but he's doing whats needed here it seems. Driving fast, but not on the limit, would be cool if he can win this one! (Evans would be a great winner also)

These comments don't look great with the benefit of hindsight. To Matton's credit I'd prefer he was loyal to his contracted drivers. To sign them up on two-year deals and immediately bin one of them off to accommodate Ogier might have made cold business sense - but sometimes you need to be about more than that. For sure he'd have been criticised if he'd done that too. So you can't win.

Only real criticism you can aim to Citroen is not taking a Suninen or a Tidemand at the time. Or fighting harder for Lappi and Evans. Maybe two-year deals for Breen/Lefebvre were over generous? Time will tell. But from then on Citroen were scrambling to sort out three cars (again their conservative mistake). Then you have a rich backer who wants a shot in the fourth car when it arrives (Al Qassimi). Difficult situation for them.

Also difficult to defend Meeke. He's raised his level but the crashes have remained. All I'll say is Citroen's general situation would have been a lot worse if not for him, his speed and his wins.

There is no reason to suspect that it's photoshoped. It's 150kph corner, the car is only some 1.5-2m meters in the air and seems to have gotten there due to the small hill on the left. It's just the background that makes it look a bit more dramatic.

Hehe, true. But Ogier, Tänak, Evans, Østberg, Neuville, Sordo, Paddon and Latvala have all been fast. And why not Breen, nothing to lose although he didn't really show speed first day. And then there is Hänninen...well he can have bursts of speed after being constantly slowest works driver, although it seems unlikely in this rally.

Don't forget it's Breen's first visit to south America & yesterday he missed out on a lot of experience for next year.. Shame really, as he's contributed most of the points Citroën's got.

Power Stage will be interesting but i'm mostly psyched about the fight between Evans and Neuville. Evans should be able to keep Neuville behind with his car fully fixed judging by the previous days but you never know. Either might lose their nerves and have a moment if they both push a lot. Evans should be more free to go hard since M-Sport look like they will have two cars on the podium anyway.

We don’t know how much Ogier would cost to Citroen and I wouldn’t be surprised to know that Citroen’s budget is the lowest of all WRC teams (including MSport; I know you won’t agree Eddie…). During ’16 Matton said several times he was interested in Neuville and in same occasions the Belgium didn’t look happy on the Korean team: why didn’t Matton catch him? Probably he wasn’t able to match Hyundai numbers and, most likely, the same happened with Ogier.

We also don’t know if Mikkelsen wouldn’t crash at the wheel of the C3 if, like Meeke is, he was fighting with main rivals for victory. It may sound basic or stupid, but I see the new cars as wild horses: they need to be properly tamed in order to deliver their full potential. Who knows, maybe the C3 is the one with largest potential and the hardest to tame…either way, we shouldn't be too harsh on the rider for trying the best he knows!

OK he made a mistake. But this happens. What did you want him to do? He set 2 fastest times straight of the box on Day2, after Day 1 accident. Not many drivers have that level of determination/ability. The overall result was over. The team boss accepted Day 1 was a 'car issue'. Just glad boys are OK.

So close - but in reality he lost it yesterday when he shipped approx 50 secs to Neuville.

we have a nice championship once more... Neuville less than 25 points from Ogier... thats one win one retirement... lets see.

BEST SEASON EVER DOGS... so far at least.

Great rally and huge battle until the end. Lots of emotions. That we need...

If the sport earns another competitive driver after this rally then its all good... but if it was just because of the tyres then no harm done.

Obviously there are 2 sides to this

1. Few people believe that Evans is faster than Ogier and Tanak on gravel given everything else equal
2. On the other hand as Ogier said, sure the tires can be better but still the driver has to manage to drive fast on them

Anyway he did surprise me. I was rather critical of him after the first rallies. Seems like there is hope.

Congrats to Neuville and Evans. Let's see if he can repeat this strong performance over the next events. I am really wondering if he can keep it up.

I would like Elfyn to win and have a 5th different winner, but now with Neuville taking the win is very close to Ogier, and that's very good for the upcoming rallies.
Expect moaning before the rallies,at every stage finish, and after the rally.

Evans mistake that cost his maiden win

Very very happy for Neuville. This result puts him back in the fight for the championship too.

A pity for Evans, he did a good rally, advantage by the tyres or not.
I hope D-Mack get their first win soon. They deserve it after all the effort they put in rallying, all over the world and in all classes.

Massive congrats to Neuville.
Impressive job by Evans! He was likely helped by tyres and road order but still very impressive.

Good job and congrats to Dmack. The Michelin monopoly looks to come under threat!

Not a single car without a problem this weekend. Some driver induced, some car related. It was a long time since we saw that much attrition in one event.

Toyota has once again proven to be relatively quick with Latvala and Ogier on similar road conditions but Latvala going quicker on many stages.

Citroen need to step up their game. It was an embarrassingly bad weekend even by their standards.

Evans finally felt the pressure of a strong fight for every second... he did many mistakes yesterday and today but there's hope it can make him better and stronger driver... we'll see.

Ogier was again a disgrace, this time more than ever.

Sorry for Evans, and for DMack, could have had a first win. But it will come for both!
Neuville is a real fighter, and it pays off today!

Congratulations to all three for an exiting competition!

Agreed! What a fantastic battle, and how good is it to see 3 drivers so close in the championship, instead of Ogier clearing off!

And that young kid, who enter to narrow bridge by 90deg is still faster on PS than Ogier who saved tyres all Sunday. Great drive Elfyn!
