I bit harsh on Mads I think. He has improved after this morning.

Mads: "Being in the battle for second is encouraging. It's been an enjoyable afternoon. I needed time to get used to the car on this surface. Now I feel much better."

not harsch at all.Just tired from excuses.

I think we have a winner!

Thanks for all the contributions.

Thank you, honoured!!!
Expect all forumers to use this term freely in future as in the following examples
A typical Lappcidental off
A Lappcident waiting to happen
Skoda had to send out the Lappcident recovery wagon

He may never aspire to the heights of Crashy Bob but he is heading in the right direction (about time too I hear some of you say).

Completely missed it but Bergkvist beat Åhlins time on SS7... and not too far beind the rest (20 s). Good stuff for someone with winter stomach flu if Rallyper's info is correct.

I think they´ve been sick for a couple of days before rally. Not winther stomach flu I believe.

Impressed with Norwegian comedian Henrik Elvestad in a Skoda R2. He has not many SS km under his belt. But he has an experienced co-driver in Bernt Kollevold that helps. Kollevold is driving an ex Petter Solberg Celica in the Norwegian 4wd national class, and leading that class.

They must have a ball, hopefully they can make it to the end!

Actually dont know if many of you knew it but the term "luck of the irish" was a term that meant bad luck think it originated in america if something bad or unlucky happened it was referred to as thats luck of the irish.

1. Luck of the Irish

The phrase luck of the Irish is commonly thought to mean “extreme good fortune.” However, according to Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of 1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History, the term has not an Irish origin but “a happier, if not altogether positive,” American one.

"During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. . . .Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression 'luck of the Irish.' Of course, it carried with it a certain tone of derision, as if to say, only by sheer luck, as opposed to brains, could these fools succeed."

I have to agree with him om the "very good first day" bit. Seriously improving his pace in his 2nd rally with a 4WD and his first ever snow rally. Started the day 2,5-3s/km off the pace, finishing is at about 1,5s/km with a best result of 0.47s/km. Not bad at all I would say.

It has been confirmed that Seb Ogier was caught speeding. He was caught while doing 120-130km/h on a 89km/h road section.
His license will be taken from him but he will still be able to continue the rally. http://www.svt.se/sport/motorsport/ogier-fast-for-fortkorning/

I don't know but I think any driver that is caught speeding so much that they have their drivers license taken should also receive some
sort of in-rally penalty. Maybe a 1-2 minute time penalty or something like that. Something that that makes drivers think twice before speeding.

As it is now, they can do it without risk.

This is what is stated in 2016 WRC sporting regulations ;

20.3 EXCESSIVE SPEED DURING THE RALLY
20.3.1 Speeding during a rally as the first traffic infringement will incur a fine applied by the clerk of the course as follows:
Per km per hour over the speed limit:
All drivers €25
20.3.2 The amount of the fine will be unaltered by any fine imposed by the police.

20.4 TRAFFIC LAWS
20.4.1 Throughout the rally, both crew members must have a valid driving licence and must observe the national traffic laws.
20.4.2 In the case of an infringement of the traffic laws committed by a crew participating in the rally, the police officers or officials having noted the infringement must inform the offender thereof, in the same way as for normal road users.
20.4.3 Should the police or the officials decide against stopping the driver in the wrong, they may nevertheless request the application of any penalties set out in the supplementary regulations of the rally, subject to the following:
- that the notification of the infringement is made through official channels and in writing, before the posting of the provisional final classification
- that the statements are sufficiently detailed for the identity of the offending driver to be established beyond all doubt, and that the place and time of the offence are precise
- that the facts are not open to various interpretations.

20.4.4 For the first infringement other than speeding: a penalty will be applied by the Stewards.
20.4.5 For the second infringement: a 5-minute time penalty.
20.4.6 For the third infringement: exclusion applied only by the Stewards.

I understand perfectly and it makes sense to me too... Also, if the force came across the wheel exactly where the drive shaft connects through the hub, the hub and A-arms etc etc would take up the force.

About Ogier, he should definitely be penalised also in the rally! Is Julien supposed to do the transport stages? And for sure this should have consequenses in the event. Time penalty at least!

World Rally Championship drivers planned Sweden stage boycott
By David Evans Friday, February 12th 2016, 19:23 GMT

Hayden Paddon, Hyundai, WRC Sweden 2016

A boycott of the opening stage of Rally Sweden was narrowly averted on Friday morning due to a lack of unanimous agreement for the action among World Rally Championship drivers.

The manufacturer crews convened a meeting between themselves at 6am local time in Karlstad, where a plan was agreed to drive directly to the day's second competitive stage, boycotting the Torsby test.

The drivers are unhappy at what they see as a lack of consultation from the FIA, WRC Promoter and the event organiser regarding the safety implications of running this week's Rally Sweden in less than ideal weather conditions.

ANALYSIS: Why Rally Sweden was in jeopardy

Ironically, the weather has since turned colder and the roads are looking increasingly wintry, with heavy snow falling through Friday's opening leg and overnight into Saturday

The plan to boycott Torsby was thwarted when Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon refused to comply on the direction of his team.

WRC champion Sebastien Ogier said the drivers wanted to press home their concerns at the safety implications of competing in sub-optimal conditions for the snow tyres.

"This morning we had a very short, quick meeting - we are concerned about these things," Ogier told Autosport.

"We think it's not normal we are not consulted on such things.

"We have to meet each other again in the future and make sure that we have the place to take part in these discussions, with at least one driver taking our views to these meetings."

Paddon said he agreed with his fellow drivers' stance but not their methods.

"It wasn't just me. It was our team," he told Autosport.

"The other drivers wanted a commitment at six o'clock and I wasn't prepared to risk my job at six in the morning.

"Of course, I agree with the principle of what we're debating and I think the drivers should be involved in that process, but if you're going to make a protest, then you have to actually threaten on what you're going to do and then you do it.

"You can't really do it by just boycotting a stage.

"My opinion is that this was about more than just us drivers; we're dealing with organisers who are really struggling here and there were a lot of spectators who had paid their money to get in there."

SWEDEN DAY ONE REPORT: Ogier leads, drama behind

Rally Sweden has cut eight stages from original 21-stage itinerary due to the lack of hard ice on some roads and Ogier had paid tribute to the FIA's efforts, and FIA WRC manager Michele Mouton in particular, earlier in the week.

"She was in the stage and she did her job," said Ogier.

"There were some details which were not perfect and we would have liked to have had a part in that discussion, but at least she did her job pretty well her job."

For a detailed analysis of how and why the boycott was planned, see next week's issue of Motorsport News - on sale from Wednesday February 17

Just seen the brief WRC highlights on YouTube of stages 5-9, and it really is sooo unlucky how Meeke retires from a small impact with a rock on the racing line, and Ogier survives his big scare going off the road! Did really well to save it and not have a full crash, but he's definitely used up his luck on this rally!

Parn at this photo i posted must be at same corner as Mikkelsen.
Seems that just before the tree stump, must be plenty of gravel that pushes the car up = smoothes the violence of hit.Cant explain it better with my bad English.
Anyway Mikelsen was extreme lucky. If this tree stump wasnt there,he was straight to the trees with co driver door.

That's correct, i got Pärn on the 1st run. Strange that nobody seemed to know about it, at least 3 cars hit the three that was there on Rally Finnskog last year.

Planed to be there on the 2nd run instead and leave for Torsby 2 but some stupid brits screwed up the whole parking so had to leave the car 4km away and literally hitch hike the rest. Got some good shoots on the 3 stages i did though, here's a quick one from Mikkelsen's jump in Torsby 1.

Ogier is very lucky with his speeding ticket... In other countries he would be dsq'ed. He should be smarter than that after his warning last year when he speeded on recce, his punishment there should be also on road section.. He would be suspended for how many rallies then!?

Well, that was an eventful first day, puh!
Predicted it to be a carnage, but this was maybe even more than expected.

First I must say that I am deeply impressed by the organizers! The amount of work they have put down to make this rally is incredible, and what a rally it is!

WRC

Impressed by:

Paddon: Off cource its a lot down to conditions, but You still have to drive it, so Paddon 2nd overall after the first day is really good. Had him down as a podium fighter. Now we will see if he can control the horns growing out of his helmet:) My current "star of the rally" . And when we hear that he was part in boycotting the boycott, and we know that he is giving back to his local rally community, he stands out as more and more of a really good unique individual.

Tänak: The current second place holder in my WRC "Star of the rally". Very impressed by his times. Have kept it together to end the first day in 4th - very good!

DMack Tires: I must say that I tought the DMacks should fear worst when it came to these conditions, but Tänak shows that this is not the case. Very, very impressive!

Sordo: Had him down as a dark horse, and he steadily delivers.

Meeke: Drives like a man much more experienced than he really is. Very fast, a true challenger for rally wins on every surface, and this bodes well for the future.

FX: Not only has he engineered the fastest rally car, but also the most tank-like. The shunt Mikkelsen got way with is just incredible. When they got the speed they wanted from the Polo, they said that they were going to lighten it in all areas possible to have the possibility to build strenght (and weight) in other areas. Volkswagen has off cource also Dakar Experience, which helps, but FK has taken the Citroën-tank philosophy to a whole new level.
Ogiers small off was also quite brutal, but almoast nothing can stop this car, except Latvala.

Impressed me - not so much:

Andreas Mikkelsen: Should be fighting for a victory, but a silly mistake cost him that fight, and "should" have cost him the rally. He owes FX a beer!
With a solid 2nd here, he could really have started a campaign for that second factory seat in VW, but even if this ends up as a second place, more stability under pressure is wanted. We have seen this many times from Andreas, that when there is pressure in the air he makes mistakes. Off cource there is a lot of pressure for him to perform on home soil, and when the first stages were so positive, this could build up. An amazing driver, but needs to tidy up his "loose back end-style" wich he has developed, and his frame of mind.

Mads Østberg: As predicted, he struggles on the first stages with set up. He has driven a WRC Fiesta more than anyone else, and still he needs to learn how it acts on different surfaces. My toughts is that he needs another PET strategy. He is 3rd, and thats obviously good, but its frustrating, because if he had learned a way to be more in the game from the first metre, he could have challenged for a victory, or at least a solid second. Because when he builds up steam, he is that fast.

Eric Camilli: I knew this was going to be a rally for experience, but started out much slower than I expected. Has shown steady progression, and has still the possibility to impress further on in the rally, but would like to see more speed.
I could only imagine the mind games going on in MSport at the moment.
We have Evans with a newly lighted fire in his belly, looking at that WRC Fiesta feeling it should be him in that seat. He is the attacker. Then we have Camilli, who needs to run his own race, needs to gather experience, needs to let Evans be faster than him in an R5, and needs to be unfaced by this.
Not an easy challenge for any of them, but both of them will grow by this experience, and both of them has M Wilson to thank for it.

As expected:

Latvala..... I dont believe in bad luck.
If the drive shaft or diff broke in that jump, this is not a coincidence. Before i learned to take the foot of the throttle when landing after big jumps, i once broke four drive shafts simultaneously on a Polaris RZR 1000.
My guess is that throttle input, steering input, and a hevy landing together caused this faliure.

Meeke.... I dont believe in bad luck.
When You encounter a big rock in the racing line for the second rally in a row, You should have learned to take evasive action. He hits the rock in the absolute worst way possible, by letting the most vulnerable part of the car, the suspension, take the hit. One learn quite early in rallying that these thing You perferably hit with Your sump guard, or Your tire.
But Meekes all out driving style makes it more difficult to correct the lines when You first commit to them.
Meeke is one of my absolute favorites, and I really like the guy, but I am not a big believer in bad luck.

Neuville... I dont believe in bad luck. But I dont know what happened.
When people get problems with drive shafts braking, diffs mail functioning etc, its often down to hitting something, or excessive cutting and the likes. I dont know the details of each technical mishap here, but I would not be surprised if it is after effects of driver errors.

WRC 2:

Impressed:

Evans: WOW - EVANS GO!!! Did not see him as a real challenger for the Skoda guys, and especially Tideman, but he has surprised me a lot - and I am starting to believe in him again (maybe Malcolm is too). I still mean that this R5 adventure is the best thing that could happen to him, and I have written earlier that I hoped this would light a fire in his belly, and it obviously has!
A very mature effort today, over very difficult conditions. Very, very impressed!

Suninen: I have seen that he is a real talent, but WOW! I would have expected him to nibble at the heals of Grøndal and Åhlin, but to set these times is incredible. Just incredible! It should really put a dent in a couple of egoes when a Young guy like this, with such limited experience in rallying on this level, sets these kind of times. This is really starting to look good, and I expect Tommi Mäkinen to put in a phone call to Harri Juki, and start discussing details.

Åhlin: I had Åhlin and Grøndal down as the closest challengers to the factory guys, but he has still out driven my expectations. Some very good stage times, and a very mature drive.
He seems calm, cool, and collected, and has a very sound mind and strategy.
He is off cource from a legendary motorsport family, so a lot is expected, but this drive should be noted as a break trough against very stiff competition.

Bergqvist: The Citroën DS3 R5 is not as competitive as the Ford and Skoda, and Bergqvist has very limited 4WD experience, so he impresses with his drive. A lot faster than I would expect, and great to see. Even if he have been plagued with stummac flue.

Sweden is once again a hot bed for rally talent, and that is so deserved! Sweden has maybe the worlds best local rally scene, but it has been a struggle to get local talent up in the international scene. Now things are starting to look very good. And behind the likes of Tideman, Åhlin and Bergqvist, they also have the fast youngster Pelle Wilén, also a name to take note of.

Impressed - not so much:

Lappi: Well, as I have written earlier, I have let Lappis management know that I see a driving trait with him which highly increases his chances of going of, but I had expected more of him. I would have him down in a close fight with Tideman for the win... Not so...

Tideman: My clear favorite for the rally. The question is if the drive shaft issue was an after effect of something. Drive shafts dont have a tendency to break? So what was the cause? I was expecting him to put the other R5 guys in their places on his home event.

Brynildsen: I was hoping he would be The surprise of the rally, and I was expecting him to fly the Ford flag, but mechanical issues have prevented him from doing that. How and why these issues have appared, I dont know.

A very exiting event put toghether by an incredible rally organizer that have given everything to put on this show for us. Wow!

Completely agree with you. Paddon and Tänak for me too. I even said after two stages that Paddon isnt doing great but what a turnaround later on! Yeah the conditions helped but still!

There's and interview with Tänak in the newspaper after day 1 and he says this about Dmack tyres:

"It has a wider pattern than Michelin and therefore it suits more on snow than ice, on gravel we also loose a lot. But then again, torsby2 had a lot of snow but it was so light that the studds still didnt hook in gravel"

He was positively surprised by the second passing, he feared it wont be good.

He tries to stay with the fast group of drivers tomorrow but says that it will be very hard because he gave all today and tomorrow's stages should suit Michelin tyres because of the frozen gravel.

Must be nice for Bertelli to spend all that family money and pick and choose when he wants to drive. Not a choice most people have. I'd guess there are a lot of people in the service park shaking their heads - especially at M-Sport.

He can make all these actions and say they are for the greater good. In two years no one will remember this guy.

If all the drivers had been listened to and not just told to 'get on with it' - we probably wouldn't be having a rally right now when conditions look good.

That´s true! It seems that Suninen is able to fight for the WRC2 title already this year!

Not so easy time also for Lappi, when the younger Finn driving the private Skoda is starting to beat him, but of course it´s a long season...

Exactly!! But they don't want to learn - they think they're doing it right.

There is a reason Sportscar racing is handing rallying it's backside on a plate..... #Rolex24 #B12hr were both trending on Twitter the last 2 weekends, and without European TV coverage. You can bet #RallySweden will not be joining them.

I think their focus is still very much on TV unfortunately, they still haven't grasped the opportunities of online streaming.

In fairness, from the way Capito and other bosses have been talking about it for the last few years, you can understand why their primary focus has been on TV; it's what the teams who are funding it want.

The sea change before we can get better online coverage needs to be in the minds of those bosses and companies as much as anything.

I rarely trust trending topics with Twitter as indicators, as it's so personalised, but you're right that Rally Sweden isn't. Maybe Bathurst and Daytona, both of which I watched too, take place at night in the UK, so much less competition. Do you remember if Dubai 24 did too?

Although I'm being critical of the promoter in general, I must say the WRC Radio coverage is superb, every bit as good as the team at Radio Le Mans are for sportscars.

His father is Jerry Åhlin, also a prominent Swedish rally driver, very good in his youth, and Susannes father was the legendary Freddy Kottulinsky who won the Dakar with the VW Iltis (the forefarder of the Audi quattro.
The Åhlin/Kottulinsky-family has been closely connected with Audi, and their family bussiness has been to arrange Audi Driving Experiences both on ice in the winter, and on tracks in the summer (I met Susanne, Jerry and Freddy on Gotland Ring at press event for the Audi RS4).
