@Kielder
nice photos, tell us more about the rally.

Thanks :) . I'm really tired now. It has been many hours of driving for seeing ten stages (half of them out of spectator zones). This year's itinerary was very hard for spectators for driving between stages.

Ogier's times tell it much better than I could do. The rest of the drivers it's the same old story: wanting and not being able to. It's really a shame what is happening to Sordo. He has the speed, though sometimes it seems he is the younger brother of Latvala. At least, he crashed like the Latvala of 2012, fighting to win (though without any win on his track record). Ostberg is a proper Ford driver, he keeps the well-known style :( .

On the other hand, our freak moment of the rally was to drive through the Mú stage to see where JML started his second life in 2009. Michael Kogler also crashed there this year (though he didn't rolled down the side of the mountain). It had to be a scary moment, many pieces of the car were there. It's one of the most dangerous places I've ever seen on rallying.

To end for today, I'd say I've been missing the Rally of Portugal in the North for twelve years. Now, I believe I'll miss it in the South for the rest of my life.

This is a video recorded with my photo camera at the amazing stage of Vascao, full of unique places. I had a little better angle than the official TV camera (though a worse machine :p ).It was published a Latvala's onboard through this section of the stage on WRC's website.

^ What a fabulous stage. Aside from the river crossing, it reminds me of Route 60 on Epynt. Were spectators allowed near the water splash there? What was the Marshalling like in general? The only thing that stopped us going this year were the horror stories we've heard above crowd control by Police etc.

MartijnS
15th April 2013, 11:30
Nobody's allowed closer I believe and I heard the same horror stories again for this year! Same reason we didn't go back.

It´s a shame the other manufacturers or teams can´t match VW`s addict to WRC.

I would like to know how it is with crowd because I hope to go next year. Can you just be in them areas that are plotted on the maps (like here: Where to see (http://uk.rallydeportugal.pt/content.aspx?menuid=249&eid=456&bl=1)) or you can walk a bit on the stage if you are early?
What I´ve have seen on incar films so it seems to be very little crowds out on stage so I'm guessing that you are stuck in them areas or?

Extremely sorry if that case because it seems to be very nice places and half of the rally is to find my own spot in my opinion.

MartijnS
15th April 2013, 13:09
Basically you're stuck. Not allowed to leave the areas. So you have to try to stay away from the spectator areas, but we found that quite tough last year.

Believe me, if it wasn't for the ridiculously expensive flights to get there Acropolis would be the obvious choice for my second foreign WRC trip this year. Even the 'budget' carriers are charging nearly £300 from the UK.

LAPPI: THE REAL DEAL
An assessment by @RallyingUK of Finland’s young hope, ESAPEKKA LAPPI, in just his fourth WRC event:

Rallying UK | LAPPI: THE REAL DEAL (http://rallyinguk.tumblr.com/post/47961438783/lappi-the-real-deal)

For sure he is! And in pair with Pontus maybe the WRC should be freshly new if they swap them with some of the current drivers not living up to their standards. (I didn´t know I could wright such things... you´d know what I mean if you could imagine which drivers I think of)

Tanak was also the real deal and where's he now?!

He was. But not the one.

For decades now I´ve seen so many upcomers, but only a few is going to be good enough. I think I´ve got a pattern seeing so many youngsters and following that, EPL and PT will be really good! Better than Novikov, Neuville, Tanak...

But still in the first day he was only 30s behind Lappi, best of the rest by a long margin. Bare in mind that he never drove an S2000 car before, but Lappi had more than a year experience in Fiesta and Fabia. Great first rally overall. What's his next rally? Is he doing the WRC-2 championship?

won against evos ? evos are more than 1 sec/km slower and if i remeber correct he won most rallies with fight till the end with some 10 seconds.
Lappi is good, but i really stragle to see at him the next flying Finn at Latvalas-Hirvonen level.

In rally Finland the group N cars have to obey FIA regs no? As Mirek said evo's on national championship aren't exactly FIA approved, but then again im not sure.

Do you know how many drivers have won with a s2000 car group N evos-subarus?In every country they have rallies. And not for seconds, but with minutes easily.
Maybe he has potential, but dont be in a hurry to make him a star or a future champion cause we haven t see from him something like that.At asphalt we haven t see him to rally against fast drivers.

Let's see how Lappi does in the next rounds.

There are other countries with some bigger restrictor for evos(Spain),but the s2000 cars are way faster. The difference from n4 to a s2000 car is not 20 bhp more or 2 kg of torque.

Every country has its specifics You know. You can't compare Spain and Finland, absolutely no, sorry. Also in countries where they have specific stages and ethanol powered evos those are often faster (Hungary, Bulgaria, Belgium, Netherlands).

The discussion is quite pointless. Lappi so far managed to achieve all targets and quite immediately. I can't see how better he could have been. The only mishap was the RMC but that event caught far more...

@ Dimviii, Mirek and others... We need a Finn who knows the stages and regulations very well to sort this out :p I think that, no matter how much you change rules for Gr.N cars, a S2000 will ALWAYS be faster on technical stages. In Belgium S2000 cars are Always faster than N4 and R4 Mirek. ;) Even on stages with plenty of straights and only junctions, a S2000 is slightly better (fair enough, as the difference in costs is big too). If a Gr.N/R4 driver is faster, it is because the difference between the level of drivers is huge.

About my Rally Portugal, great experience! First time I was coordinator for NCRS. For the teams it's a great event, great organisation, nice stages (very rough but beautiful), beautiful region etc... Many spectators will disagree, but I wouldn't mind if the rally stays in Algarve. :)

Targets against grN cars against National rallies,or at Czech rally sprints will not show for me any potential.

Lappi needs(deserves) time that's for sure. I don't like to bet on drivers since it's easier to say that someone is not going to make it opposed to saying that someone is the next really fast driver. My money is on Lappi to be the next fast Finn. When I look at him in my eyes I see "f**k it, I'm going to drive fast no matter what the opposition thinks" mentality :)

For sure he hasn't driven many tarmac stages, but he has a karting background so that helps.
On the positive side there is plenty. Last year was his first year with a 4wd car and Juha Salo as a benchmark is a good one. Salo is fast with the evo and beating him in every rally takes skill. A lot of skill. In NORF Lappi took the fight to Ogier at some stages. For sure he went off when the power steering failed, but what did he have to loose at that point? Last but not least his brain seems to be working and he seems to stand pressure well. With his codriver Ferm they make a strong team in the car.

I´m not saying you are completely wrong, but have you seen incar of Juha Salo in Artic Rally? That represents very well the stages in Finland, which, as you surely know about is very, very fast. (I know EPL didn´t take part in that rally, but still...)

Mirek
16th April 2013, 16:17
When I was in NORF in 2011 Salo with FIA Evo X R4 did very competitive times with SWRC. He was several times on SS podium positions behind Hänninen and Tänak, sometimes between them. He had his troubles later but speed-wise he was competitive. In FRC rules for his car are different.

His SS positions in SWRC NORF 2011: 5., 4., R (mechanical), 6., 4., 3., 4., 3., 2., 7. (SSS), 4., 4., 4., 3., 4., 3., 5., 6., 8., 8., 8., 8. (some problems in all last stages).

What comes to FRC 2012 for example Nikara's car(evo IX) was FRC FIN-R -class car and he put Lappi very tight with that. Fin-R car has like 330hp/650Nm and its lighter than FIA group N-car. Restrictor is bigger, turbo can be changed as well air suction etc.

Congrats to Ogier. I would cry if this situation wouldn't be so funny. For years Finns wait for Loeb to retire and when he finally do, what happen? :D Hilarious in macabre way.

However, there's a huge silverlining in this story. I call that Esapekka Lappi. What a brilliant drive. I'm really waiting for Tidemand to challenge him. There's a superduo to come

you have to be very careful! imagine the position of cursor in vertical as the scroll bar, so start from the top and move it slowly down. I agree with you, it is not the best of photo viewers though
