For "non-Portuguese" speakers assisting the stream:
Carlos Barbosa (ACP President - Rally Portugal Organizer) just said LIVE a few minutes ago that Rally Portugal 2014 is almost certain to return to Fafe! They are already talking to the local entities to bring back the Rally Portugal to these classic stages in 2014 ! :bounce:
The switch from the South/Algarve to the North is basically confirmed now! What a great day. :)
Don't miss the second and third/final pass in a few moments:
- 15:45/16:30 (UTC - PT/UK time): SS2 (LIVE RTP2)
- 16:53/17:35 (UTC - PT/UK time): SS3 (LIVE RTP2)

Indeed, cars are shared. One takes it for the 1st pass and the other for the 2nd. The fastest of the two will be on the 3rd and final pass for the victory.

Will depend largely on the financial availability of the north authorities of the country ..
Unfortunately true, although their will is certain... there will be much more potential for investment returns due the amount of spectators. Not only for the locals but also for attracting some more sponsors overall. Plus, the North location always attracts much more fellow Spanish rally fans to join the party and that's always good.
And with so many people, this might trigger more Live coverage like it used to have back in the 90's with RTP & SIC giving the event a priority coverage.
We'll have to wait for final confirmation but every entity is really pushing for it like never before.
SS3 and final run starts right now:

Y, hehe, beats me... XD
It was long overdue, but I think they also chose it now because the several contracts made for Algarve expire this year, I think they make like 3 year contracts with all the entities and sponsors. So I guess they had to make a decision anyways for 2014, and these two editions of Fafe Rally Sprint gave some assurance that the crowd is at his best nowadays and organization is prepared for a switch. FIA's has also been more open to Rally organization strategies and longer stages lately, so this is all a gathering of a lot of positive factors.
Btw, IMO that Vodafone structure on the top of the hill was a good idea for this year. It fills a lot more the landscape on photos and videos and gives a nice point of reference for the jumps. Maybe it blocked some of the view for some fans out there next to it, but I think it helps the event's image.

Certainly, yes. I moved around that side of the road, but it was impossible to see the gravel from most of places there. It used to be the best point to shoot photos (there isn't anything at the back). If we add the banner imitating Sweden's jump's ones, not anymore.
The proof is in the pudding. The spectators and a GNR are the tradicional and best background at Pedra Sentada.

Before going to the Rally Sprint, I spent an hour at the Service Park. It was manifest that Mikkelsen was proud to debut with the Polo. He was doing a photo session for the media when I arrived.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee510/OAnibal/II%20Fafe%20Rally%20Sprint/DSC06911_zpsff781545.jpg
There's no doubt that Neuville left many friends at Citroen Racing. He and Gisoul were talking with several members of the French most of the time.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee510/OAnibal/II%20Fafe%20Rally%20Sprint/DSC06949_zps94913d3c.jpg
Kubica was there too, speaking for a long time with a Citroen's technician about the gravel setup. It reminded me a recent article on Autosport which showed the Pole's awareness about rallying and his commitment. It said that he woke up in the dark on the Saturday before the last Canaries Rally to see the onboard video from the recce.
Then, Neuville went to welcome Kubica. They were talking about the differences between the Fiesta and the DS3. The Belgian was very interested in the modified gear paddle of the DS3. Later, Nasser joined them.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee510/OAnibal/DSC06966_zps2df676f3.jpg
BTW, Kubica told me that his famous photo showing a finger on the last ERC event was, as it was supposed, a joke to a friend who was there supporting him.

Neuville only ran once. Plus in his first pass Kubica was quite alot slower than Moura in a Evo IX.
I believe he will be a contender on gravel but not just yet, he will be seeing the stages for the first time. Maybe later in the year.

He is going to shake up WRC next season if he stays in ralling, also he brings publicity and media interest to WRC on a different scale than Raikkonen. It's opportunity for FIA to take WRC to another level.

Of course I'm not expecting the same performance as on tarmac but the diff with Moura was 6 sec. in 1-st run and Kubica was faster with 2.5 sec. on the last run. I'm not thinking that Kubica will be the fastest guy in wrc-2 just straight out of the box but it looks like he's fast.
P.S I didn't watch the live coverage, now I see that Neuville did some donuts in his run so his time is incomparable with Kubica's one.

I think he is Priority 3 - not class 3.
All WRC 2 and WRC 3 competitors are considered P3.

Quotes ahead of the Rally Portugal
Jari-Matti Latvala, Polo R WRC #7
“I have often been quick in Portugal, but my best result so far is the third place I achieved in 2011. I hope I manage to come through clean this year and challenge for a place on the podium. The Polo R WRC certainly has the potential. Sébastien’s victories in Sweden and Mexico have shown that. The first three rounds of the world championship were a bit difficult for me. Unfortunately, not everything went entirely to plan. I just needed time to get used to the car. However, I had the necessary trust in the car on the Power Stage in Mexico – and that good feeling got even stronger during the tests in Portugal. The Rally Portugal is known for its ‘blind crests’, which are really rather special. You really have to be alert as you approach these crests, as you cannot see whether they are followed by a left-hander or a right-hander. For this reason, it is also important to be very accurate during the Recce in the run-up to the rally, to ensure that the pace notes cannot be misunderstood in any way.”
Sébastien Ogier, Polo R WRC #8
“I'm feeling much better now, after illness left me feeling below par last week. Withdrawing from the Fafe Rally Sprint was a very tough decision, especially given all the enthusiastic fans. However, it was the right decision in order to allow me to recover fully. We saw at the Rally Mexico that the Polo R WRC is also competitive on gravel, and that is important. The coming rally in Portugal is another good indication of where we stand, and will be particularly interesting because those will be the kind of conditions we will come up against most often in the World Rally Championship: hard gravel and stages not much above sea level. However, the Rally Portugal has two sides to it. When it is dry there, the ground is very hard and offers a lot of grip. However, when it is wet, the ground becomes very soft and muddy and only offers a very limited amount of grip. We discovered that last year – and it is not particularly fun driving there in those conditions. I much prefer it to be dry. A feature of the special stages in Portugal are the many crests and jumps, which are often followed by quick, blind corners. I am confident that we will follow on from our excellent recent performances in Portugal, as I really like the rally. It is one of my favourite rallies. In 2010 it was the scene of my first victory in the World Rally Championship, and I won again there in 2011. That makes it the only WRC rally that I have won twice in my career – so far.”
Andreas Mikkelsen, Polo R WRC #9
“I can hardly wait for the start of the Rally Portugal. It will be my first rally with the Polo R WRC, although I did have a number of outings with Volkswagen last year and have already been completely integrated in the team. As such, the only thing that is really new to me is the element of competing in a current World Rally Car. After two successful years in the IRC, I feel ready to take the step up into the World Rally Championship. In my opinion, the Rally Portugal is one of the most difficult on the race calendar. There are a lot of ‘blind’ passages and relatively little grip. The last time I drove there was back in 2007, so it will practically be a new event for me. I was lucky enough to be able to take part in the Recce last year. As such, I have some idea of what to expect. Despite this, it will certainly be one of the most difficult rallies of the year for me. It will be important not to make any mistakes and to avoid any incidents. We want to finish the race and learn as much as possible. After that, we can concentrate on getting quicker at the subsequent rallies.”
Three questions for Sven Smeets, WRC Team Manager
What does it mean to the team, to line up with a third Polo R WRC from the Rally Portugal onward – from both a sporting and logistical point of view?
“From a sporting point of view, it is obviously nice to see Andreas back in a World Rally Car after a long break. He initially has different sporting goals to those of Sébastien and Jari-Matti. Portugal, in particular, is practically new territory for him. For Andreas, it will primarily be a matter of gaining experience and completing the rallies wherever possible. Where he feels more confident, he can also show what kind of speed he is capable of. For the team, a third car simply means more material and more work. We have to take more spare parts with us, including an additional spare engine and another gearbox. On top of that comes the equipment for another service place, as well as additional personnel: one engineer and three mechanics. Compared to the first two rallies in Europe, we are now travelling with another truck, which will mainly be loaded with material for Andreas and Mikko’s Polo R WRC.”
Why did Volkswagen not start the rally season with three Polo R WRCs right from the word go, rather than contest the first three rounds of the world championship with just two cars?
“Because of the extra effort that comes with a third car. We wanted to give ourselves enough time to conscientiously run through all the processes involved in a rally weekend – and with a completely new car and, to a certain degree, new drivers. We also wanted to see how the Polo R WRC performed in competitive conditions. Had we discovered a major problem over the course of the first three rallies, we would then have had to solve it on three cars. It goes without saying that this would also have meant extra costs. When it boils down to it, we just wanted to give ourselves a little time to find our feet in the first three months of the season.”
What will be the team’s biggest challenge at the Rally Portugal?
“That depends in no small part on the weather. In the past we have seen that the cars are given quite a tough ride at this rally when it rains. The route becomes very muddy and slippery. However, when it is dry and the roads are in good condition, we will experience a really good gravel rally in Portugal, at which it will all come down to the driver. It is a real drivers’ rally. The closing Power Stage is also over 52 kilometres long. That is extraordinary in itself, and means that the drivers must really earn the extra world championship points.”

I did on monday recce with my girlfriend as my 'co-driver' :D
Lost big time before first stage but overall ok managed to drive ss 1,2,7 and 8 with 208 peugeot.
Nothing special on ss1.
One good right over crest on 15,6km at ss2, but maybe not enougt speed there.
Ss7 a lot of more in my opinion. 8km junction to left maybe be a little confusion place. Quite an high speed entry there.
50m lenght water splash forced me to take my shoes and shoks off and first check out the river :D also 3 poliseman drove there to have an chat with me. Nobody of them talk english so i jump in my peugeot and drove past the river . They didn't follow us
There was almost 40 centimeters water.
Ss8. Wau! A very spectacular views.

Rally funs are the most dedicated. the will walk and stand for long time. just to get to that point where they will only see a car passing.. Sweden people will stay in the freezing cold, or in russia. or in finland, here in Africa. we stand in the really burning sun.. just to go cheer and see a car going sidways or airborn... if you are a rally fun then you should know you are the best of the best fun of all sports... big up to all rally funs. we at home will always be with you following it up right here..

No I believe Mikklesen has learnt alot, this is a tough rally with difficult stages. The old Mikklesen would of gone balls out from the word go and probably crashed within 4 or 5 stages. This Mikklesen will start slow and bed himself in and get the mileage! He has proven his pace, this year is all about getting the seat time and doing as the team tells him! He will be there to support Ogier and Latvala, but will still have the pace when allowed!

11th April 2013, 21:05
Our testing went well before coming here and that allowed me to put my finger on the problem: the front differential. My style isn’t the same as Sébastien’s, especially the way I position the car under braking. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make any modifications until Rally Argentina because certain parts, including the front diff, must be the same for Sweden, Mexico and Portugal. I’ve just got to live with the situation and do what I can. The team is very understanding. I have their support, but the situation can’t continue indefinitely. I need to prove my potential; that’s life. I’m not going to put myself under too much pressure here. We will see in Argentina.

The Ford drivers' view of the rally:
Mads Řstberg said:
“It’s certainly possible to replicate our good result from last year. We have had a really good test this week and looking back at our performance in Mexico, I know we have the pace to fight for the top positions. Of course Portugal is a little different to Mexico, but there are still a lot of experiences that we can carry forward and I am confident that we will cope well with the challenges ahead.
“This rally is quite rough so you need to ensure that you really look after the car and the tyres. The long stages are always a challenge too and, as we saw last year, the weather can also play a key role. Needless to say, I want to defend last year’s result. We’re hungry for victory and I want to win.”
Evgeny Novikov said:
“We will see if we can achieve a good result like last year, but as always it all depends on a lot of different things. As we saw last year, this spring-time event can bring some very tricky weather conditions! I hope this will be the case again because I really enjoy those tricky conditions.
“We tested yesterday in some quite slippery and wet conditions, so if we do get some rain next week then we should be well set-up. We learnt a lot and got about 200 km under our belt which is all good preparation.”
Nasser Al-Attiyah said:
“I am a big fan of this event. It wasn’t on my original programme, but when the opportunity became available Malcolm [Wilson] and my manager made it happen. The atmosphere from the spectators is always fantastic and I think that’s why a lot of drivers travel to this event.
“I have good memories from this rally as it is where I recorded my best ever result in the WRC – fourth place overall last year. We had a great run in Mexico and I hope we can keep the momentum going for another good result here.
“I just want to enjoy the event and drive well in front of the fans. But I think we could well see one of my team mates really challenging for victory!”
Thierry Neuville said:
“We had perfect conditions during the test – humid and wet in the morning and dry in the afternoon – so I’m confident of another good result next week. We made a few changes to the car from what we had in Mexico and it feels really good.
“People often say that this is the first ‘conventional’ event of the season, but that’s not to say it’s not without its challenges. The long stage on Sunday will be a big test for the crews, but first we need to get there. With no midday service on Friday we’ll need to play a clever game and ensure we look after the car and tyres. Strategy will play a key role for sure.
“Our results in Sweden and Mexcico mean that we are feeling confident, but we can’t let that take over. We are still learning but I would hope that we can secure a fifth or fourth position next week.”
Dennis Kuipers said:
“It was a late decision, but I am really excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to get back out on the WRC stages. I’ve contested this event quite a few times now with some good results in the past, so hopefully we can continue that trend next week.
“Having been away from the championship, it will be difficult to get into the rhythm straight away. It’s also been over a year since I last contested a gravel event – it was in Portugal last year actually – so it will take a few stages to get comfortable. But as always, we’ll try our best.
“One of the biggest challenges for me will be the big 52 km stage on the final day. I contested a stage of a similar length in Jordan a couple of years ago which was 48 km. It wasn’t the easiest of stages, but it was really enjoyable and I’m looking forward to tackling Portugal’s offering.
“This is an event where a lot can happen. But if we run our own rally and look after the car and the tyres, I would hope that we can bring home some WRC points and a good result for the team.”
WRC2 - Elfyn Evans said:
“This will be my competitive debut in a four wheel drive car at this level, but I am really looking forward to it. Of course there will be a lot to learn, but I really can’t wait and am obviously very grateful to the team for providing such a fantastic prize for winning the [FIA] WRC Academy.
“I like this event, but it wasn’t one of my best last year. We’ll try to put that right this time and focus on learning the car and securing a solid result going forward for the rest of the championship.”

Who are these 7 drivers?
Theoretically:
T. NEUVILLE
E. NOVIKOV
M. HIRVONEN
M. OSTBERG
J. LATVALA
S. OGIER
D. SORDO
Each one of them has got the potential to win if the other 6 retire :)

Who are these 7 drivers?
I can't get to that number, I can think of 5 max - Ogier, Latvala, Ostberg, Sordo.... and probably Hirvonen when all above have problems

Or if factory drivers all withdraw, anyone can win...

Indeed, not far from Novikov with much worse starting position. Well done! Or have Kubica and him swapped cars? :p

Ostberg all hard tyres, Ogier 4 softs put on, 2 hard spares. Looks like softs are not best choice

Bizzare tyre choice by Ogier. They still have 4 tyres to run on those tyres, and it will only get more abrasive and hotter.

What an amateur! So now we know there are 4 drivers who could win if Ogier collapses as the virus returns.
HOWEVER, the effect of adrenalin on the body can never be underestimated - I think the virus is currently getting its microscopic ass kicked by le systeme immunitaire d'Ogier

Really? Are you sure there isn't a service between the 1st and 2nd runs.
