To me, SWRC is providing good indication of some young guys who we should hope to see moving up in the future... I like Paddon, met him before he'd won anything and seems like a really sensible driver - fast when he needs to be, takes it easy when there is nothing to gain. If he were British the UK press would be going bananas over him - just look at how Kris Meeke gets oversold and lionized!
Breen is fast too although he has that thing that plenty of Finnish drivers suffer from, that is, being much faster in your home country than other places.
Yazeed is OK, needs some improvement but has a realistic viewpoint... he said he has to be a top driver in the SWRC before moving to WRC. Doesn't want to be a Khalid Al Qassimi?

Here's Australian media coverage from Rally France - no mention of Petters name
https://twitter.com/skynewsozsport/status/254742419868876801
seems like a crash or car fire is the only events to get a mention, hopefully Red Bull can change that next year

thanks sport + for doing a great job, and proving that it is not complicated to broadcast rally with a bit of motivation. But please next year get proper commentator, like julian porter and the irish dude... because the french dudes are a bit hopeless (except guy fraiklin). thomas senecal is the biggest joke on french tv, i don't think he even has a driving license, that tells you how good his knowledge is about motorsport...

Vurpan always mention the F-group or F-Cup with F-group cars. I don’t know but by the name Vurpan, maybe he used to drive whit the style like in the video. Eller hur?

Btw Vurpan, can you guess which car was on the introduction page of 1970 of the 1970-1974 1000 lakes book I got this week?

Joooo men you know i like languages and names and have been callled all sorts of names inside the family and by all those crazy latinos in my family (OK I was born "John" but to my mom was the deminutive for Juan which is "Juanito", her brother came up to USa and I was "Pineapple" to him, Johnny to my father's family, then I had the bright idea to move to Sweden when I was 17. In Swedish industri in those days it was maybe 75% foreigners---and 40% Finns, lots of Jugoslavians and nobody called be "John", it was Jon or Jan, or something) well I moved to learn moto-cross and when you are trying to learn and try things---and are young ad stupid, you crash a lot---or you stay slow... so naturally if they can't say John the didn't even try vanLandingham---so it was either Johnny Crash, they could say that correctly, but Jan van Vurpa became the name....
When I was based in France doing International events I was finally "Johnny" except to my Italian and Slovenian friends--it was Gianni.. Now when I go to China its Zhang Wei Han, Zhang sounds a lot like John and its also wifey dear's family name..
This fun with names continues with my 2 little girls Anna (7 1/2) and Natasha (5 1/2) who to me are Anoushka and Ninotchka, or Yang-yang and Yue Yue when in China...both speak English, Putonghua (mandarin) and are learning Spanish..
Since you Finns are the indisputable nation producing the most true rally gods and have such great rallies, we Gringos---anybody with brains--and humor---idealize and imagine everything crazy about Finland---and since 1984 when I started, I am the offical "Bestower of Finnish names".. for example the guy I have co-drive for a couple of times in his nice 240 Volvo is Al Kun--his honorary Finn name is Alperti Kunkanen. Dave Clark in his--the ONLY Ascona B in USA, became Doivi Clarkalainenen.
Now what car could be on the cover??
Was it made in Trollhättan by Trolls?
Is it a car I could rebuild the gearbox and build the "värsta sortens" motor for with the parts I have on the shelf?

Sean: How big is the rallysport in the states if you think of all the motorsports, Nascar-Indy-Motorcross and so on??? I have always wonder...
I live in the US, so here is my perspective.
I've got a couple people interested in Rallying since i am living here (1998). However they are not following it much.
There is only one person i met in the USA that knew about Rallying. However he had spent one year in Finland for a student exchange program and that where he got interested in it.
The WRC is basically nonexistent here. Speed TV finally resumed airing the WRC this year. But still it is not catching up. Americans want something different and not a 3 day event that is based on a time trial: it needs to be fast and wrapped up in a few hours event where the winner is the one that cross the finish line first.
PS: posting here reminded me to schedule the recording of the WRC broadcast. Funny enough the guide is showing "FIA World Rally - France (Corsica)"

If anything, Rallycross will be the "rally discipline" which gets going in the US. Easier for our fat asses to attend, keeps our shallow attention spans in check, and allows us to gobble up commercial marketing. And I love it!
Oddly enough, when I was going to the Rally America event in Portland this summer, i was fueling up in my hometown and the clerk actually knew about the event that weekend. I was like wtf, haha.

Where is Brother John when you need him?
There's nothing going on in the middle of the night because today's heroes need their beauty rest..
Loeb going like clockwork, Latvala 2nd, Petter crashes, what's to re-hash?
Why not relax if you aren't interested?
Just a few long term rally fans having a chat in the interval and getting to know one another.
Do you need help in real life mixed conversations from a moderator?
Relax, more Loeb winning all the stages will start in a couple of hours and you can analyze that to death.

Is it accidental that when it's less up to cars performance all Mini crews step up in s/km difference to their closest rivals? Sordo faster even without handbrake, Atko faster, Muller faster (from first splits)...

yep! Sordo would with a competitive car, easy be on the podium for a 1-2 or 3 position... He is extreme on tarmac! Prodrive don't get any money from BMW for this year like a factory team and they can't develop their car as fast as Citroen and Ford.
But I love the Mini and Prodrive so I had hoped for a little bit more speed in the car, but will wait for next year! ;)

It is not just here but also in other rallies and other corners, the organisers put the Spectators area in much more dangerous area than the designated 'No go areas'. I am also speaking about Wales Rally. I do not understand if whoever put the tapes in the stages understand how rally cars behave

Organisation is plain stupid. At what speed do they arrive there? People are in the middle of the run out zone. Okay, it's higher than the road, but these days you can never be sure enough.
Run off area looks OK to me. Spectators are protected by that mud wall, a natural embankment. 90-degrees corners on tight roads aren't supposed to be taken at full speed.

I have spoken to the FIA people and it is for this round ONLY. France.
They said we will have to wait and see for the 2013 season but they will be forwarding the feedback everyone is giving regarding the LIVE broadcast from this weekend to the new promoters but also everyone should contact and push our support for the coverage given.
Technically the coverage this weekend is only for subscribers to Canal+ in France or if you have the feed on your satellite dish in parts of Europe. Someone from their home is broadcasting the WRC from France this weekend over the internet for us to view it as it is NOT an official feed....
HaCo
7th October 2012, 12:14
As long as they want to earn money with WRC by selling TV rights, instead of giving them away for free and promote the sport, it will be hard to get decent live broadcast.

I think the Live broadcast for the WRC with new promoter will have to be done intelligently... Redbull Advertising on the screen when we're watching and possibly a subscription cost yearly or per round. I honestly don't have an issue paying to watch for it.... but others might not like it. They will still sell rights to TV stations across the world, and some providers cable or sattelite would broadcast it for example Canal+ or Foxsports or SPEED or ESPN or MotorsTV, you know where I'm coming from. There will have to be LIVE local coverage such as in Australia on ONE channel and TVNZ in NZ plus local broadcaster, who ever picks it up in GB, ITV or Ch4 if it'll go on Free to Air!

Would I really have to start again a discussion Thread for the bar talk and the long posts I read from you and others?

No my brother. You don't need to do anything except think of context. Many people have tried to tell you that you don't understand the moderator role.
You look at the time, it was middle of night here, 0500 there, nothing was happening, we were all just waiting for the action to start and just some fans chatting while waiting...
You should have a test in your mind: If we were all standing in the woods, at the same corner and you were a marshall with the orange vest waiting for cars would you ---or others--- go out of your way to montior if every person in all the dozens there who were only talking and insist they were only talking about what the spec of the cars were, or why the drivers did this or that? Would you walk over to two or three or 4 random guys talking to eachother and push your way in and shout "HEY! YOU GUYS! You cannot be talking about who you are, how you came to be here in the same corner! You must only about the action on the stage! I INSIST YOU GO TO A PUB TO TALK!!"
That should be the test.
Were the conversation occur in the middle of tight action when the drivers were in a tight "sekund-strid", then chatting who the next guy was or where he came from would be disturbing what everybody was talking about. But while just waiting, it is not us who were disturbing anything or being rude, but the complainer...
Like the complainer, you need to relax, take it easy, and mellow out.
And maybe reflect: maybe you don't understand what your role is or should be.

I followed him when he started in the S1600 Saxo as I had one too (VTS) but his and Citroen's success did not make me want another Citroen ...
I'm on my 3rd Ford since then ... and it seems his wins have done nothing for (performance) car sales for the French company.
Makes me wonder what it was all for when still no-one wants a Citroen...

Verstuurd van mijn MT15i met Tapatalk
More accurately, it was cause by the driver expecting that the road would ALWAYS be clean, and not leaving any reserve for the (pretty damn obvious) chance that they might be dirt and dirt at any second.
Got to go all Taoist on you:
The dirt just is. It is passive, it has no will, it can only be dirt. It has no will, it cannot ciase anything to "happen'. It just is.
Same for the asphalt, same for the tires, the car, not do anything but what is their nature to do.
Only the driver has will or choice.
He chose to ignore the obvious---that there CAN be dirt from ditches or embankment. Or a cow leaving a big present..
It's the same result but the driver wasn't just along for the ride---well untill he drove into the dirt anyway.

i think it was not only due to dirt, as he was approaching i already thought: "wow, this is too quick." then of course the dirt did the rest...luckily no one was hurt, it was a quite heavy impact on high speed.

A driver should think himself: So, I'm going to cut this corner, is it possible someone before me did the same and throw some mud on the road? May be I should be more careful approaching it...

Congratulations to misters Loeb and Elena. Nothing surprising here, but ninth title just adds up to his fame. Nine is the biggest number, so is the crew. (And you can round it up to ten titles like mentioned.) Next year will be different and it'll also be interesting to see what kind of pace Loeb can keep if he enters some events on the second half of the season with longer gaps between the starts. Let me think... he'll reign :)
Also very happy about Latvala's result. Another and consecutive second place on a tarmac rally and this time far less time difference to Loeb than in Germany. After all was lost before mid-season break he has taken one win, two seconds and one third. Only if all seasons would be second halves only... Now what I really wish is a tarmac win from Latvala before Loeb retires. Loeb is the measurement.
It was again great from the French round that they had all the live coverage. Many of the normal rally thread posts changed from "Solberg fastest through 3rd split!" to "Where's the stream?!" For sure this approach is more 2012 than anything else we've seen elsewhere. Also, it seemed a great number of crowds out in the stages. That is _exactly_ where this sport is at its best!

He was way, way to fast in to that muddy corner!! It's not the stages fault, they must have missed the mud in their pacenotes??
I hope they got out of that wreck okey!

There are thousands of corners in every rally. You simply can't have that approach in order to achieve anything.
Like darkstar said, from first-hand experience, he seemed to approach the corner too fast before knowing for sure what will happen. The results underlines it, he just simply approached too fast.

That is correct. And the reason for the fast approach I think is he believes the road will be clean. Probably just a miss in his pace notes, this things happen, fortunately nobody was hurt :)

Much more exciting I think! I really really looking forward to 2013! The drivers who is still there is much tighter in stage times, 1 more factory team with good drivers, 1 more team will start compete under the season and Mini/Prodrive is coming back with the team.
It's going to be a REAL FIGHT and much FUN! :)

Thanks for sharing darkstar. This accident seems to be caused by dirt on the road.

I haven't seen any post from him since early September. And it is true, no matter whether you agree or disagree, he is missed. :)

After getting over Mat Wilson's return he is now raging over the lady boy F1 drivers possibly visiting his country for the proposed Greek F1 race...
Seriously though it does seem weird with out his bizarre replies!

heavy crash from arzeno:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViP_CnlwMjE
Ouch, very violent. Must have been terrifying seconds running to the car, not seeing the impact, just hearing that ominous loud bang... Those curses say it all, you don't normally whisper obscenities... Luckily they were okay.
Congratulations to Seb and Daniel, simply the best duo. Amazing performance. Also very happy for Latvala, great tarmac result from him! He was like an excited little boy when telling what new ideas he has gotten for tarmac driving. :)

Congratulations Seb & Daniel, proud to be French... Nice to have been lucky enough to witness such achievement.
Also thank you for bringing so many people to watch and be interested in rally. if you hadn't be so successful, i am not sure any french tv would have bothered covering the rally. So big thanks for that!
Now let's enjoy the last 2 rounds, and can't wait for 2013.
Congrats again, and to Jari Matti and Mikko...

I've been out of contact all day so just caught up with the final stages. Mssrs Loeb and Elena have created a record which is unlikely ever to be equalled. Neuville now looks ready to be a number 2 in a works team. Chardonnet getting a point despite all his problems and stopping to assist Nasser is outstanding. Sad for Dani but imagine he'll give it all in Catalunya. So now Seb L can drive how he likes the showdown in Sardinia with JML should be something special ;)

Hayden Paddon's off as viewed from the onboard camera is on his facebook page. Such a simple thing causes so much dissapointment for any other time one would expect to get away with it.

There are videos online from Viasat and MotorsTV of coverage. MotorsTV has Colin Clark and Julian Porter. Viasat has Paul King.

indeed! lots of people were running there standing a bit further down the road. most people standing beside me (and me too) slowed down the next cars.

And he stopped driving whilst still on the road. (Look at finnish drivers (others as well) when going off they never stop having the plate in the bottom...)

Very much so he went a bit too fast into that corner and wide as well as if he was going to slide around the corner!

I don' t think so, Chardonnet has his moment at friday on ss2 and Arzeno crashed out saturday if I'm not mistaken.
About Gilbert he crashed also on friday on the 3-rd stage for that day, so it must be not the same place as Arzeno.
Edit: I'm mistaken. You are right darkstar, both Gilbert and Arzeno crashed on the same stage, Quentin on the first loop and Arzeno on the second.

he is VERY lucky that he finished the rally after that. It could well be another disappointing result from him even though he was competitive pace-wise
