So far great rally. Only ~16 seconds between Seb and JM.
Not like some years before.. Loeb -> second driver 1-2 minutes after day one.

All French cars have starting number instead of the plate. I think that the French changed rules for competition cars this year and they don't get normal plates anymore.
That's right, since June, rally cars do not have licence plate anymore, only the starting number.
This rule is kind of a pain in the ass for rallyes like Ypres which run in belgium and france. French government wanted to stop cars at the border to make them take their licence plate off before entering France. The french part of the rally Organization had to negociate so that crews didnt had to take the licence plate off... (And put them back when leaving since licence plate are mendatory in belgium)

I'm impressed with the Breen - Paddon battle now... I know the VW guys are blowing away the S2000 field, but they are factory remember. Manu to privateer gap is almost always significant.
The gap between Paddon and Breen would be pretty big if Paddon hadn't spun and lost like 16 seconds... in GB he even beat Ogier in three or four stages, once with a pretty big margin. But for a guy who's done like five tarmac rallies ever, he's pretty impressive to be beating Breen. These guys should be getting calls from the new manu's needing no. 2/3 drivers.

That's funny :) Here in CZ we have special plates for rally cars. They look like xRx xxxx. The R is for competition cars. There are other similar plates of same scheme like with V for oldtimer cars.

Yep, he had to be cautious, 10th overall for his second race with a DS3 WRC, it's good !
He is supported by Daniel Elena and before he did the begining of WRChampionship 2012 with a DS3 R3 and he did Junior French Trophy with a twingo R1 in 2011.
Maybe not the quickest young french driver but very intelligent and regular.

This kind of tv programming should be ordered by the law in every WRC round.
I just hope they would put a split in the middle of the ss, have few cameras there and show every car
in that split. That way it would be more interesting to follow how the stage goes.

Stage 12 is really difficult to control the spectators, vineyard stages without walls next to the stage like in Germany for example, so everybody stands between the plants really close to the cars. No overview from any point..
Last years they always let police with horses clean the stage before it ran, but when they left everybody got back into their positions offcourse.

I'm not going to ask to quit a tarmac rally from the calendar, although share an event between Germany and Alsace (like Sweden with Norwegian stages) would be more common sense than keep two events quite similar. There are worldwide many countries to run an event (even more now with the fusion of IRC & ERC).
Most of this stages have articifial obstacles. That's not rallying.

“All the driving before was absolutely perfect,” said Solberg, who won the FIA World Rally Championship title in 2003. “I knew the road was going up on the right again but there were leaves on the windscreen and I couldn’t see. From the outside it looks like ‘why don’t I brake’ but I knew the approximate distance and I was waiting for an open area. I went more on the throttle to get back up to the road again so I don’t get stuck but that’s obviously the decision you take in a split second.”
Solberg continued: “I didn’t know it was an electric pole I hit, I thought it was a normal pole. It was a big hit and we broke a steering arm and a TCA. Obviously when you look at the pictures it’s unbelievable. For sure something happened and obviously I have to look with Chris what happened because we are a team but nothing broke on the car.”

hierry Neuville (DS3), penalized twenty seconds for a score late in the ES12 at the 3rd day of the Rally of France, was "angry" with his co-pilot, he explained to a few reporters Saturday." We are fighting (for a podium) with the best and then stupidly lost twenty seconds because of error copilot (Nicolas Gilsoul, ed.) I am sorry. Frankly, I'm tired , "is Neuville angry, very angry during the lunch break.
This sanction cost two places in Neuville, who was the fourth rally Saturday mid-day to 1 min 23 sec leader Sebastien Loeb before downgrade in sixth place because of the twenty-second penalty.
" In terms of control, this rally is going very well, although I have sometimes been too cautious. foolishly But if we lose time, it is not possible. What has happened? Go and ask him , "he said, pointing Thierry Neuville and his copilot compatriot Nicolas Gilsoul.
Neuville, 24, who is part of the Citroen Junior Team, competes for one of its best rally since the beginning of the season, his first in the WRC.
Revenge after his penalty, Thierry Neuville was third time SS13 early afternoon, four tenths of seconds of the scratch made by Finns Jari-Matti Latvala and Mikko Hirvonen.

Not good news from Mikkelsen also..

The engine is running on 3-cylinders so we are losing time. Good practise to keep up the speed ... Hopefully we get back to service!

Hi Sean, which Sean are you? Where you at? hang around a while, there's some good characters here. watch out for the Finns though, they're almost all tricky fellows---very tongue in cheek....

Sadly USA dont have a WRC-event yet but it will probably never happens because of the cost for all of the wrc-teams...
But now with RedBull as new promotor, we never know... ;)
But don't follow the WRC from US-forums, its not so good, I think. You guys only speak about Indy and Nascar over there.. ;)
But Nascar is cool but rally is the ****! ;)

Denver, CO... born and raised in SoCal. I've been a huge WRC fan since the early 90's but as you well know there is not biggest following for the best drivers in the world here in the US and it was not easy to follow the WRC back in the day without the use of the internet.

Actually it's great as long as you consider Block to be the best driver on the planet. :dozey:
As far as a round of the WRC here in the states, I'm not seeing it anytime soon. Maybe if we ever get a good TV deal to happen on a channel that most people actually get/watch then maybe we can start to develop a decent fan base.
US motorsports= EXTREME or turn left, that pretty much sums up the mentality.

Sean: How big is the rallysport in the states if you think of all the motorsports, Nascar-Indy-Motorcross and so on??? I have always wonder...
My own reflection is that many "rallyfans" in US only follow Ken Block and his rally events over there and rallycross and so on and as you say, think of him as just the greatest driver in the whole world. And that's not the case as you absolutly know ;)
They need to open their eyes and see the real sport of rally and not his stunt movies ;)
Don't get me wrong, I like Block very much, he is a really fun and skilled driver and business man in the motorsport family. He really is a fun guy and I hope he will compete in all WRC-events for 2013! It's even good for the sport.
But I have always wonder how big the sport really is in US...

Rally in the US is 1/3 kids brought in by Travis Pastrana and Ken Block, 2/3 codgers over 50 that have been involved in events back to the 70s when it was easy to enter just about any car with few rules and a handful of people like me that bought an Impreza (before or just after the turbo was made available) and found out about rallying from online forums during the sport compact craze in the 90s.

Hejsan Astro, I can tell you that in terms of participation, its not even like a good KM dvs Klubb Mästerskap rally därborta.
DM events here might get 20 cars, sometimes 30-35. If they call it a ''Amerikanskij Champignonskit'' event like we just had last week up here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, they had maybe 60 cars... There are 2 teams with utterly absurd and pointless budgets, Monster and Subaru, a few with just stupid budgets and then the rest with prep and skills about like a first or second year C driver in Sweden..,. in the last 10 years many events have half the fieed in various lightly built and mostly poorly driven Subarus, the rest 20 year old Golf, Honda, various things.....
A friend who I sorta am sponsor to said the Monster mechanics, all English were swarming around his car because it is a very well built US version Sierra. They said they went to mount and adjust lights and went down some väg-stump, smacked some rocks and banged the kevlar sump guard, so it was a $15,000 light test.. That is insane to beat a few guys in garage built Subarus. In a way it reflects the US society: there's the 1% and then there's the rest.
Plenty of people stare at you-tube but theres never more than a couple of hundred speccies in the woods..
Nationwide in this country of 312 million there are maybe 300 people that might enter an event in a year..
So we're special, we're one in a million. I remember reading a few years ago that there was a list of official scrutineers for folkrace i Sverige and there were about 1200 names on the list...
The emphasis is on, like everything in America, the appearance, and "status"....Shiny cars, shiny suits , lots of graphics, spend lots of money---and some guys on SS speed are averaging about 65 km/hr where Block might be averaging 115 km/hr...
But trust me, those boys will argue about "the indispensability of Left Foot Braking" (at 65 km/hr) and argue about "the burning need for good pace notes"
And discuss at length which on board video camera is the best..
One word is best: Larv
More than 25 years I point my friends and strangers too to Grupp H and your neighbors great series F-cup----and now in the last few years it seems there is a change and more and more guys are going back and building simpler, mostly rwd cars that they can afford to run for more than a season or maybe 2 before dropping out and disappearing...
(I build suspension for rally cars and some brake kits, and build motors (1 National Chamionship to my motors, a few Regional titles, and a record that every Saab that has ever won a US National round in our equivalent of Grupp F was full of all my parts, all 3 ... so I'm in touch with lots of people all over USA and Canada. )
And there is absolutely no clubb or volunteer numbers to support a EM rally much less a VM.

Who do you think is going to take the 4th place?? I think that Neuville will take it but I really hope for Sordo. Sadly the Mini is not so fast this year, so this will be Neuville's time!
I dont think that Östberg will have the pace on tarmac to hold Neuville off...

Great news to have a Brit win the Academy after the Irish (Breen) won last year. Hope Evans gets a good drive next year and eventually makes the IRC or WRC. We need a top Brit after so long since Burns / McRae. Go Evo !!

Stuff almost nobody here knows about..
And I am what do you call it_? Profet? Agitator. that's it!.. I say VM or MM (for our Finnish colleagues) is cool, but we can't just watch it and runka, and do nothing, we need to build a system of clubs, and start from the ground up....
Oh we better be careful, I get yelled at if we type in what I thought was just a dialect of Northern English but they say is a "foreign" language,
Oh yeah to make this WRC related before they spank us:
Definately has been a lot of changes in the world and in rally (and moto-cross) since then, poor ol Sweden getting kicked and stomped medvetlöst is one thing, i can accept that, they just are tougher and better, but Sweden slapped around by Norge.....I still have a hard time accepting that.. At least Petter married a nice girl from Sweden. That is, if you consider Varmland to be Sweden.....
Stackars Petter!
Anybody have any answer what happened?
I think the cars are fly-by-wire, but knocking down the power pole it could have been fry-by-wire.

Sounds like he gassed it thinking he'd meet the road relatively straight on and be able to continue/regain control, but the windscreen filled with vines ("wine goggles"?) and he and Chris both missed the moment where they crossed the road... ending up knocking over a power pole like he did in NZ on the final stage. Power companies must love Petter.
