To me it seems like he has an external strobe flash on the inside of the hairpin and has underexposed the background. If it is true that this image is manipulated I have just a lot of respect for this photographer. As photojournalistic pictures, rally images should never be manipulated (should not be confused with photoshop post production).

hello my greek friends!
We came back to sweden this last tuesday. It was an amazing experience not only being in Greece and watching the rally (which I became very much in love with, it is a great and demanding rally for sure) but also getting to know so many new friends. I didn´t have any expectations at all before we traveled to Greeece. But meeting so many nice people was a bonus. Thank you Tasos, Dimitris for your kindness showing me some very good spots on day one and two.

For the other forumers I´d say it is a pity you didnt show up at Waves, because we had a very good meeting even if we wheren´t so many there.

I really do hope Greece will host a WRC rally next year as well because I´ll be there for sure again!! Hear from you guys!

Remember me a funny situation when Kresta was changing tyre during Barum Rally 2007 and all spectators wanted to help their local hero and despite the crew tried to do everything themselves it would probably still be enough for disqualification of stewards wanted to see it.

Yes, it is illegal. Contravenes 40.1.2 certainly it would be at the very bottom of the scale but outside physical assistance none the less.

assistance? For what assistance? they had already changed the tyre.Rim cap is not a necessary part for the car to finish or to make it faster.
If a crew has a exit of road, and after they come back into the road by themshelves, and one spectator give you a part of the car ie mirror,or bumper to put it inside the car you believe that they have to punish this crew?
I think that we are looking the tree, but we have lost the forest.
some other complaining because some spectators were late to help a crew to hang the car on hands inside the road....

Believe it or not, but I was on Kefalari stage on Saturday. You can see me on the picture up to the left above the village... :)

And believe it or not, I got through the village and parked only about 200 m from the stage. Thanks to the Renault rally gang in four or five Clios, who showed me the way to Kefalari from the motorway (if you read this). But I didn´t stop to taste the Souvlaki at the Tavern in the village though...

A question was asked and you gave an emphatic answer ... which was wrong. Is picking up your gear and taking it with you not part of completing a task? If somebody else picks an item up and hands it to you is that not assisting? Of course it is ... and it doesn't matter at all whether the tyre is already on the car.
In a competition of this status in which the difference between winning and coming 2nd is often a couple of seconds, this is exactly the kind of thing a rival team might take more than a passing interest in.

40.1.2 The crew, using solely the equipment on board and with no external physical assistance, may perform service on the car at any time, other than where this is specifically prohibited.

i cannot see how returning a car part inside the car is considered external assistance...

so would you punish them if you were in a official position? It's a hypothetical question dimviii, and I'd like to think the answer would be a no.
However, were a hearing held it would likely be the result of an inquiry by a rival team and there is a responsibility to ensure fairness and adherence to the rules.
If the complainant team were able to successfully argue that the wheel cover was required to be in the vehicle, and that the spectator's act of picking up the cover and handing it to Elena saved the 2 or 3 seconds he would have taken to retrieve it himself, and that those 2 or 3 seconds impacted on the results, a penalty would have to be applied.
Without knowing whether the rules require the wheel cover to be in or on the vehicle or whether they were free to drive off without it I cannot be more definitive.

Sorry for the late reply guys but I have been really busy since I got back and have put my feet up for a few days!!

What a great rally, I understand the issues in Greece but it's really a terrible thought that the WRC could lose such an iconic event! Hopefully I showed Ally and Jan and his dad just why I love the event so much, I think we had a great time even with the rain, I'm not sure Ally would have coped with a proper hot and sunny event ;)

I started by sleeping in the car all the way through shakedown as I was ill, and only dragged myself out to take a few photos of the qualifying stage which I thought went ok. We drove out and did a recce of the Sunday stages and lost track of time a bit so didn't make it to the Waves cafe, maybe next year! Unfortunately we were also too late to the first stage to get to a decent spot, so I didn't bother taking photos and instead had a good laugh at the most rediculous marshal I have ever seen  I went over and shook his hand when leaving the stage as it really cheered me up after I had been feeling terrible the whole day!

Friday morning started with Thiva, at the double bump and I have to say it was a great spot!
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/521536_10151784367525612_813051303_n.jpg

Then it was off on the long drive up to Elikonas, a very nice road and we decided to go to the end of the stage, I decided not to take any photos but it was an ok spot, but there were a lot of trees in the way so we didn't have the view. After the top guys we raced up to Bauxites to the tarmac section, have to say I didn't like the spot, but we stayed there for the second run (I had a nice snooze under a tree) and I walked back a bit and saw Tanak going wide and clattered several rocks including the one I was sitting on, I don't think he even got a puncture though!
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/575293_10151784342875612_1444688417_n.jpg

We then had the long drive back to Thiva and stopped for food for a bit too long, and only made it back there just as the first car was going over the jump. Luckily I'd seen it on videos from last year and knew that it is a bit "hairy" and Araujo came straight over the jump and nearly into the crowd, luckily he managed to correct it but I had started to run..... they really need better marshalling there as if he had been going faster then there were a lot of people to hit....
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/521536_10151784367605612_529115611_24573874_140351 9818_n.jpg

Saturday started with the hairpin in Klenia, very busy there and a lot of spots to choose from.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/521536_10151784367645612_529271034_n.jpg

Then onto Kefalari, unfortunately I had an overshoot on the road section which cost us a place in the car park, but I blame the poor navigator :p : But trying to get out of the car park afterwards had to drive over some big rocks as lots of people had parked in the middle and blocked the way out... Great spot though and really enjoyed it, maybe my favourite of the event
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/576605_10151784375365612_1888368573_n.jpg

We then drove up to Ziria, incredible road section but was held up by slower cars and couldn't get past them all in our heavy car up the hills, and we were just out of time and unlike Jan I just couldn't run up the hill to the start, wish I had seeing his photos though!

Went back to Klenia but decided to go to a different position, unfortunately we were a bit too late and couldn't make it where I had planned but it was ok in the end, we had a bit of a delay in leaving as well so decided to skip Kefalari and go back to Ziria, back up the fantastic road but it was raining quite a lot so took it pretty steadily. Drove up to the car park and walked to the first few bends, Hirvonen was great to watch there as he must have missed his braking point and had to throw it into the corner, it was really quite dark and wet and miserable but I'd taken my waterproofs with me!

The rules are there to be imposed no matter if there is a gain or not... in the last few years many penalties were imposed even though there was no gain in time or performance.

And according to 40.1.2 it is not clear if the handing of a part is considered external assistance since the rule states that the "service" should be unassisted, what happens after the "service" is over, is not mentioned.

We decided to skip the power stage and went to the end of the first stage of the morning, I wandered back up the stage for a few km and wasn't really happy with where I ended up, but there were a crowd of friendly Greeks there so I stayed and it was ok in the end, very very rough and dusty though after it had been used the opposite way for shakedown.
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/576605_10151784375525612_529115611_24573883_156112 4021_n.jpg

Walked in the other direction for the next run and was surprised to see Ogier catching Loeb :p : Was a nice spot though with an interesting rock formation.

And according to 40.1.2 it is not clear if the handing of a part is considered external assistance since the rule states that the "service" should be unassisted, what happens after the "service" is over, is not mentioned. It's not as ambiguous as you make out.

If Ford didn't have any problems with it who are fighting for the title then guess it would be way too severe to impose a penalty.

No a rim cap is not required in the car and it is legal,as it is legal if you have half fender from an exit,or a missing bumper(of course inside nomimal weight).Elena had forget to take the rim cap,so taking the rim cap from the spectator he was 1-2 seconds later inside his bucket and not faster.

5th June 2012, 10:30
Exactly, asking a penalty for this is ridiculous. And Ford does ask for penalties as soon as they suspect anything illegal. For example the thing with the roundabout in Argentina last year...

The time Loeb won from the roundabout was bigger than the overall difference at the end of the race.

Nevermind its an old topic, I wanted to say its way more serious and deserving for complain from Ford.

The time Loeb won from the roundabout was bigger than the overall difference at the end of the race.

I was exactly in that spot in Argentina last year and saw both works Citroens and Petter Solberg (also driving a Citroen by that time) cutting the roundabout as the Fords and the rest of the rally made the "official" path. It sure gave at least 10 sec advantage to the cutters...

In the asumption Dimviii that you have read the rule book I will bow to your superior knowledge as I have neither the time nor inclination to do so. And that being the case I would agree that any form of penalty would be inappropriate.
