The important question is what's happening in F-cup this year? :bounce:

Next event "Toivakka Ralli" has over 200 entries.

Kalle Rovanperä will probably get a drivers license in advance when he turns 17 on October. That means he could compete in BRC, for example, and drive his own recce and road sections in Finland.

Yeah I knew that so what does that make these guys?/ ( true confession Antti, English is second language for me and i always had trouble with names for relations much beyond "Uncle"...those guys over next country west if you, that's my 3rd language and their clear way "morfar, farfar, morbror" that was better so )

Oh anther thing, please..We you said "(I was her race engineer)" what do you mean engineer?
Mekaniker? Skruva o banka p[ paneller?

I hear that and in Engrish an engineer is some guy at desk with pocket protector and 2cm thick glasses who is capable of occasionally drawing stuff which after giant battles might be a part, might just be junk....mainly a nerdy guy who biologically CANNOT hold a wrench without somebody getting hurt..
hence the name "injur-near"

But I hear that a lot...

Ah ha! Now you see why I was confuse...

So why are you "race engineer"?
Engineers design stuff that is over-complicated and intended to drive me insane if I'm makng it in my role as machinist (svarv o fräs) or in my roll as mechanic or meccano. Trust me, many times if who design some crap was around they would be 'inhur-near"..

So help me understand cause I see that word used a lot and really (not tooooo serious but then again I never am) but really curious...

Lots of crashes on the Autoglym Rally - Greensmith, Nordgren and Huttunen all went out. Actually it was quite rare that in a Finnish national event the top four places were taken by foreigners (Neuville, Veiby, Arai, Katsuta).

Eerik Pietarinen is a name to remember for the future. Two stage wins out of three, third stage win ruined by a Swedish R4 Mitsubishi.

Some organizing problems on the third stage, an accident requiring ambulance and then after the race re-started a civil vehicle got onto the stage slowing down competitors.

Pietarinen did a good work, being first time in R5 car. No doubt he could be a BIG future star. But can´t understand the big differences. Was it tactics from the others thinking of points and championship?
Also a question if he was local hero, living in the neighbourhood of the rally?
No offence, just wondering.

Pietarinen did proper job, but how often has a foreign driver set the fastest time in overall with Mitsubishi in Finnish championship????

Jacob Jansson from Sweden, the Man of the rally. He was one second slower than Pietarinen in the two forest stages on Friday and he was rallying first time ever in Finland.

Give him a chance!!!

Well Juha Salo needed a win so no reason for him to do any tactics. Asunmaa probably played it safe.

Pietarinen is from Southern Finland, not from the Tampere area.

It would have been interesting to have Rovanperä on the event for comparison, he wasn't this dominant on the two Finnish rallies he did this year.

While this is true Pietarinen also had a starting position advantage which Rovanpera did not have in his 2 starts in Finland this year.
Also I watched most of the live stages and everyone else seemed super careful except Pietarinen, it almost looked like they weren't even trying which I don't understand. I understand that Asunmaa had no reason to risk but why Mänty, Turunen and Salo were so much slower I have no idea.
But still I have to give credit to Eerik he was super impressive with almost no experience with R5 and I hope that he is able to drive R5 car next year atleast on FRC and maybe even on some international races.
Maybe Neste Ralli is going to be the event when we will see those two fighting against each other? and we can't count Juuso Nordgren out either.
Plus Huttunen driving Hyundai next year. All these Finnish rallying prospects are going to make 2018 exciting for sure!

I think we're going to need couple more "finnish" teams to WRC to fit all these guys on top cars ;)

I was not spectating the event live, but when someone is close to 1s/km faster than everyone else, everyone else looks as if they weren't even trying. This was just one event, but it's hard to downtalk Pietarinen's achievement. He was simply super fast.

All drivers driving michelin tyres had big issues in Tampere (mänty, salo, nikara, asunmaa). For some reason tire temperature was super low even after long stage. Almost twice lower than Pirellis. Overall they strugled with the grip and pirelli drivers liked the grip.

But still Pietarinen did super job! Hopefully he can have good package next year!

To me it looked like proper rally driving all the time, and there were offs for some of the top drivers, meaning that they sure were trying. Pietarinen didn't even look that spectacular, but maybe that's why he's so fast.

In the best possible scenario for 2018 we could have Latvala, Lappi, Hänninen and Suninen in WRC class, with Huttunen, Rovanperä and Nordgren in WRC2. Hopefully Pietarinen joins that group soon.

Eerik Pietarinen now confirmed for full FRC season in Gardemeister's car and Pirellis. They are also eyeing on Rally Finland and maybe even other WRC2 start later in the season.

TGS plans to run 2-4 cars on each FRC event. TGS is now also entering and servicing Marko Mänty's Fabia.

A good handful of entries now for FRC and hopefully some more still. For example no talk yet about Rallybaron's two i20 R5s. Pienizanek have entered Arctic Rally and runs a Printsport car now. Maybe more events in Finland for him?

I dont understand finish, but only words "virtual chicanes" makes me crazy...

It means an area with speed display, with drivers required to slow down to a certain speed, for example 50 km/h before they can start going normally again. Another option demands a full stop and start.

Compared to normal chicanes it reduces work from the organizers in the form of carrying haybales and having someone to put them back if someone hits the bales. Also, you cannot hit the bales and thus break your car, or break the bale which would make the chicane then easier for others. And as we've seen with WRC this year, moving the chicanes can be a drag. Although I could also see problems with distinguishing whether someone actually did hit the required speed on the required area or not.

In Finland the problem is that the public roads are usually easier to obtain for rallying and they also withstand better rallying. In the last Finnish championship event we had a stage with 139.71 km/h of winning average speed on a Skoda Fabia R5. That stage had many straight or almost straight parts where the cars went for kilometres completely flat out.

Another option would be to cut the fast sections by splitting the stage in shorter parts, but this always requires more people working on the stage.

Thanks for translation. But I still think this is a stupid idea which should never come to this sport... Keep stop and go and going through boxes to circuits, but dont bring it to rallysport...

Yeah, I know it feels super awkward but I would rather just not have any chicanes at all, but it seems there' s benefits over traditional chicanes.

Another benefit I forgot to list: a traditional chicane is difficult for the recce because the chicanes cannot be put in place until the road is closed, and recce is done when the road is still open for public traffic. A virtual chicane only needs to mark the area during recce somehow.

From the horse’s mouth on virtual chicanes. But hopefully not for Rally Finland, although that would allow driving Ouninpohja again...

Just an honest question... What's the problem with 1km long straight road? Apart that it's boring as hell for the competitors there's nothing particularly dangerous about it. The organizers shall try to avoid using such sections simply from sporting quality point of view but IMO chicanes are better to be used where there is some reasonably high danger instead. The average speed value is anyway like catching own shadow because the cars and tyres simply grow faster with time.

AnttiL
23rd October 2018, 09:04
Obviously the danger is in the following corner. If the driver has driven at 180 km/h for a minute, he could get speed blind. Similarly, a puncture or similar techinical defect could be more dangerous when the speed is 180 km/h as opposed to 100 km/h.

My quick thoughts on virtual chicanes https://itgetsfasternow.wordpress.com/2018/10/23/virtual-chicane-dilemma/

I have no problem if the car should be stopped to 0 km/h on a stopline 75 m before corner after a long strait.

Or why not put a moment of skills, to have the driver to park inside kones 90 degrees to the left or right, and then reverse out on the stage again ... :) :)

Rallysport was always about to be fastest from point A to point B. To go through road designated by organiser. But road or obstacles which are visible, showing, how the crew is able to go fastest through that passages. It is basic purpose of rallysport to go as fast as possible. I cannot imagine to slow down (or stop) on one specific place "for nothing", only to allow this virtual chicane comedy. I also dont believe that checking the correct speed there should work without problems. I also dont understand giving this chicanes only to reduce the average speed in stage, it is complete nonsense. Each chicane should be there mainly for safety issues, on place, where you really want slow down crews because there is very dangerous place, too straight part or you are before entering the village. But it still should be visible by eye, that crew went through that passage correctly or not...

I don't remember any mentions of average speed alone, I only used it as an example to show how fast the stages can be. But what Henrik Frank says in the interview is that they intend to reduce the time the cars spend with their top speed, and I would assume the need of chicanes is at the ends of long straights / fast sections or before dangers.

Finnish rallying championship continues on Saturday with the first gravel event of the season. The event now is held in Riihimäki. Surrounding roads have been used for rallies numerous times in the championship, in local events and also some in Rally Finland in early 2010's the latest. Of course, the selling points for this event are Jari Huttunen and Takamoto Katsuta both in World Rally Cars. The R5 turnout is really poor, only seven crews will start, but otherwise the entry list is nice with over 160 cars. This event is a combined FRC and junior FRC event. (Note that Mini R4 does not start due to homologation delays.)

Finnish championship calendar for 2020:

Snow
1) 16.-18.1. Arctic Lapland Rally, Rovaniemi, Rovaniemen UA
2) 7.-8.2. SM Ralli Mikkeli (RSJM), Mikkelin UA
3) 28.-29.2. Itäralli, Joensuu (RSJM), Joensuun UA

Gravel
4) 12.-13.6. SM O.K-Auto Ralli, Kouvola (RSJM), Kouvolan Seudun Autourheilijat
5) 4.-5.9. SM Ralli, Oulu (RSJM), Ni-Ra Oy
6) 25.-26.9. Pohjanmaa SM-Ralli, Seinäjoki (RSJM), Pohjanmaaralli ry

Some minor changes, like Mikkeli returning after one season break as planned and Kouvola back to gravel. Seinäjoki is pushed further in the calendar and serves now as the season final in late September. Biggest change is a gravel event in Oulu, one could say a newcomer, it's been a while since FRC event in Oulu.

On regulations, which are still undecided, but R4 Kit should be there allowed for points (probably SM2?). Also, they are planning to ditch "old Civics class" (2000cc) and introduce V1600 class instead with FRC value. That is a class for almost road cars with minor changes, very much suitable for drivers in the beginning of their careers, affordable.

Rally sprint track is considered as a track and those with numbers are marshalling points with flags. Finnish rally sprints are run with 30 second intervals, so there must be some efficient way to get the attention of the driver had a driver before gone off or otherwise stopped.

Is the lack of foreign crews a sign that the WRC Finland winter rally will not happen?

br21
6th January 2021, 11:19
It's more likely the issue of travel restrictions, etc. And if WRC Arctic will happen it will share quite much of the stages with FRC event, so anyway works drivers won't be allowed to participate.
If WRC Arctic will be confirmed then we can expect works teams coming, just not with top drivers (Toyota with Nikara for example, Hyundai I don't know with who)...

Also it will depend if Oliver does it as a pure test for a possible Lapland WRC rally and use the 7mm stud protrusion, or if he will use 8mm as national entries. It`s a big performance difference in right circumstances.

Biggest reason is that our JWRC prize competition was only for Fiesta drivers, other big reason is that there are no PSA rally dealers here, using Fiesta is much easier.
I hope some drivers will choose 208/Corsa Rally4 later.

but what is interesting is that the Pirellis being used by Hyundai Motorsport’s Oliver Solberg and his fellow Rally2 runners have never had longer studs.

How long? The Italians are being a little bit coy about that, but somebody’s measured one on behalf of DirtFish and nine millimeters is the answer.

I guess both Oliver and the Solberg team is starting to understand the i20, and tweaks it in the right direction.
For Veiby it seemed to go in the opposit direction, fast stage, and the got better in slow sections, but maybe worse in fast sections.
not sure if these two teams Kristoffersen and Solberg share all data, but I guess they are, since both now are Adamo guys!

Even if it is boring for us, it is a perfect rally to get to know a car. You are back to the depot btw almost every stage, and can do adjustments, and get data on the result at once.

Not sure what spikelength/ overhang he is using, but normally they use the longer spikes 8-9mm when there is snow on top of ice. With just ice they can use 6-7,5 mm.
So the longer ones are needed to get through the snow and down into the ice.

explain it please AMSS.

Friday was clean roads with little or no loose snow, Saturday first stage also clean roads, the rest much more loose snow. WJ with 9mm protrusion was a clear advantage there, easiest is to compare against Hänninen who was on same 7mm WRC tires all even and you can see that all others were closer especially on SS8 with alot of loose snow, than again long 9mm protrusion can actually be a disadvantage on clean ice roads as the stud starts to sway a lot faster when the rubber warms up.
But I wasn`t there so can`t verify what tires who was on at what point, so this is pure specualtion

Rallyper
17th January 2021, 18:38
according to Teemu Asunmaa in another forum Oliver had same new WJ all event, but mind that 2 stages after Saturdays first service were the really snowy ones

If so Oliver would´ve lost more time Saturday after 1st service, wouldn´t he? Snowy stage starting early. Same conditions as Teemu of course, but to the rest of the field of fast drivers in RC2 cars.

However I could also reccon Oliver and his team is as smart as we do think. He did test his feeling on Friday. Very important to get the right set up and gain experience. He is a fast learner and a smart team, so Saturday they could step up and go as fast as they could, better knowing car and set ups. And it finally showed where Olivers status is. Winning Saturday by some 35-40 secs.

Asunmaa said that he lost totally around 30s on Saturdays 2 stages because Veiby had problems...

Of course this isn´t fully true and maybe Oliver also had some "dust" problems.

Because it was Oliver´s 1st rally with Hyundai, I believe that he was not attacking 100%, especially on Friday.

What I meant is Oliver took full advantage of the 9mm studs in the snowy conditions, it looks as like the new WJ tire suits full snow alot better than clean roads as seen from the results the drivers who got the new tire suddenly were alot faster on the last 2-3 stages.
However it does not explain the time loss for Friday.
And just to be clear I am in no way saying Oliver had a bad rally, especially Saturday he showed the difference between a full time rally driver and a national rally driver..
