28th July 2011, 16:57
I'm not ashamed to say I was unsure as to Ketomaa's pace compared to the top WRC drivers, but I'm delighted to be proven wrong - its been astounding from him. Tanak and Rantanen also appeared super-human on SS1 but very sad to see Rantanen off...hope the crew is OK.
Both Minis showing good speed too - already showing much more potential than the Suzukis, Hyundais and even Subarus of recent years.
Hope Mikkelsen and Lindroos can show more pace if VW let them off the leash, although of course both drivers have slightly worse road positions. 35s slower than Tanak on SS1 is pretty slow though tbh.

What a farce. Even in Finland we are forced to view the same **** we watched all year. Even Ketomaa did it!

Ketomaa said he will just enjoy the rally, drive his own speed. He knew from testing that everything is possible, he feels he has now the best car he has ever had. From tomorrow on there will be no tactics any more, just driving (which im not so sure about).

I've been at a presentation of the Impreza R4 in the Azores two weeks ago. STI Japanese technicians said their goal was to be about 1.3 seconds/km slower than the S2000 and around 1.4 seconds/km faster than N4's. Might be but we're never sure because there is always a part behind the wheel and stepping on the peddals...
Truth is Arai and Nutahara never came close to S2000's and were clearly beaten by N4's...

its hard to use tactic when you are first on the road...... and the starting order was determined on the previous stage not on this one thats why they run it in reverse....

Of course in all fairness to the greatest driver ever walked on this planet soo far Loeb is the one that hates tactics the most and he has proved it numerous times winning rallies starting from the front.

STI Japanese technicians said their goal was to be about 1.3 seconds/km slower than the S2000 and around 1.4 seconds/km faster than N4's. Might be true but we're never sure because there is always a part behind the wheel and stepping on the peddals...
Truth is Arai and Nutahara never came close to S2000's and were clearly beaten by N4's...

Probably, specially if it comes to be true the story about low cost swrc cars at about 100.000€...

In comparison to N4's the makes will probably put the difference clearly: if they can't make the r4 much faster they can surely make the n4's a bit slower...

they are not impressive times, but lets give time till tomorrow, maybe they will speed up somewhat

VW have stricktly said, the only goal is to finish! Just a test for the whole team. The cars are just customer-cars, not factory cars. They will not have the same diffs and so on.

The car Hänninnen drives is a factory-car. The same car he used in Acores.

Well I'm fascinated by this event, still too early to call but if JML is within 30 - 50 secs at the end of today then tomorrow will be electric, not to mention 'can Mikko keep this speed up?'
Like the 'tuning' of Ketoma's fiesta comment above ;) That's one position back that Mikko won't have to worry about.
Ott (Is that a name or an acronym for his driving style?) Tanak showing exceptional pace in the Fiesta but Juho fighting back -that's going to be one hell of a fight - Expect a major scruit-strip of the Fiesta if OT wins :) (which I don't think he will, as Juho should have the 'experience' edge)
And Paddon has hit the ground running this morning so that's both my predictions for a WRC drive doing well so far (although I've got Ketomaki as my fantasy rally selection and he's moving up now).

I actually think the works MINI's are doing quite well despite it being only their second event. The privateers is an other story ... especially Araújo is turning out to be a big dissapointment in my book. Also a pity for Rantanen as I thought he would score points in that car.

Driving from Hassi towards south. We were at 3,5 km or so at the much-spoken powerlines section. Brynildssen started crashs, the car stopped some 5 metres away from me. Soon Tahko rolled more downhill, and soon Saliyuk also. Perhaps the co-driver's side hit the pole. After that stage was stopped. Also Lindroos and Al-Qassimi went a bit wide, Tänak jumping bit off line. And Hirvonen - relaxed and on his own league.
