Hi you guys. I'm not very familiar with this forum process.
I am from New Zealand and want to watch Rally Turkey where my grandson will be racing.
I have a problem in that I am travelling solo and not sure how I will be able to get out to vantage points.
Is there someone who might be able to help me with the right contacts. I would like to try and organsie something before I leave New Zealand but I don't know the right way of finding a contact.
Hoping someone can help. Esther.

I too planed on going to Rally Turkey, hopefully on an organised tour, but Per Carlsson from Rally Travels (www.rallytravels.com (http://www.rallytravels.com)) has decided not to run a tour.
The other well known travel site Rally Travel doesn't have a listing for Turkey either. (www.rallytravel.com (http://www.rallytravel.com))
It may be worth while sending an email to Greg Paul at Rally Tours NZ, he may be able to help more (greg.coaches@clear.net.nz (greg.coaches@clear.net.nz))
I really don't want to go solo, these days I would rather pay the money and have some one else do the organising and worrying.
The home site of Rally Turkey points you to http://www.veritatravel.com/ however they don't seem to have any information at the moment apart from listing a few hotels.
Sorry I can't help any further.
We will be flying into Amman for Rally Jordan on the 30th March then making our own way up to Istanbul for that rally, flying out of Istanbul on the monday after the rally, if we can't go on an organised tour for Turkey, we'll probably spend longer in Syria as there is so much to see and it is a great country to travel in.

Sorry to ask but how do those rally travels work????
Apologies to Esther for possibly highjacking her thread.
The ones I have been on with Per (and highly recommend) involve turning up at the hotel booked by his company then being chaffuered around to the stages in a mini bus.
Realisticly Jordan could be done without a tour, in fact I met a Dutch couple 2 years ago who organised their own hotel and travelled around the rally by public transport. There were also 2 young girls from St Petersburg that had flown into Damascus and rented a car there, driven down to Jordan and drove themselves around.
Per normally checks out the route before the rally and picks what he thinks are some good spots. Last time there were about 20 of us including Norwegians, Swedes, Finns, French, American and us 2 (Australian/Canadian). Also with our group was PG's parents, though unfortunately he had major problems early on.
Normally also included is a visit to some of the teams servce areas, again highly recommended, spoke to most of the Ford guys, we also wen to Citroen but the atmosohere there was poisonous as it was after the debacle between Seb and Conrad, even the French guy with us was most unimpressed with their attitude!
I used to do things indepentently but I'm getting old I want some luxury and not have to worry about things!
If you go to Per's site (www.rallytravels.com (http://www.rallytravels.com)), click on the English flag then click on photos, scroll down to rally Jordan 2008, I'm the fatty with my arm up next to the Swedish Flag.
Do it, honestly you will not be disappointed.

Definitely it counts also for Turkish Rally Championship, infact it counts for the first three events of TRC. This year, a new regulation is to implemented saying that, each day of the Rally of Turkey will count for a seperate event in TRC; with different point systems.
There're lots of rumours about the prospective Turkish participants, yet not confirmed but here is the probable list:
Yağız Avcı (2009 TRC Champion) - Ford Fiesta S2000 - Ford Turkey
Burcu Çetinkaya - Peugeot 207 S2000 (She will also do IRC this season)
Serkan Yazıcı - S2000 ???? (Not confirmed, Just what Turkish rally fans hope... :) )
Fatih Kara - ???? (2006 JWRC contender, Just back from Military Service and is rumoured to drive)
Burak Çukurova - Peugeot S2000 (not confirmed, but most likely...)
Cem Acar - Fiat Punto S2000
Ünal Şenbahar - Mitsubishi Evo 9
Mustafa Söylemez - Mitsubishi Evo 9
Cem Özdemiroğlu - Mitsubishi Evo 9
+ Some Fiestas N3 / N2 / A7
+ Some other two-wheel drive cars...

I think he will not participate in Rally of Turkey due to the regulations; having only Pirelli for this season in all cars. Volkan Işık is enrolling at a developmental project for Lassa Racing Tyres (http://www.lassarallyteam.com/gravel.php). So, as it was the case in 2008 Rally of Turkey, Lassa Rally Team is not expected to participate.

Off topic - Esther, I hope you can hang around for Anzac Day, it is not far from Gallipoli for the emotional pilgrimage. It is an extra special feeling when you are there in person on the day. It would be worth the extra few days there.
It is a wonderful thing for past foes to be great friends now.
This should be a good rally. AFAIK this is the former IRC Istanbul Rally and not the previous WRC event. The roads should be faster and smoother and the scenery is pretty nice too.

Definitely. Those who follow IRC and ERC in the previous years may remember the characteristics of the stages. As RS said, they are faster than those in Antalya, former location of Rally of Turkey. Also the scenery is perfect. Plus, start ceremony will be unique, just like 2007 Istanbul Rally (IRC), the cars will be trasportated by ships. It will definitely be fantastic in Istanbul. We all hope to see you there mates. :)

No, sorry, I will be on ceremonial duty back here in Australia for Anzac Day. I spent Anzac Day in Beijing last year so I was told I was not allowed to go overseas for Anzac Day this year. Otherwise I was planning on doing Rally Jordan and Turkey, back to back with a holiday through Syria and Lebanon.
I will be in Auckland for Rally NZ in a few weeks though, make no mistake about that.

The FIA has adjust the WRC regulation to prohibit the early checkin tactics. This was stated by Olivier Quesnel, the boss of Citroën Racing. Last week in Jordan, traversing advance had created confusion. Following this event, the bosses of Ford and Citroen had agreed not to resort to this practice, which allowed a pilot, subject to time penalties, to change the order of passage through the stages. Finally, with this measure decided by Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, it does not even require their tacit agreement

Hi Esther, enjoy the rally.
I'm guessing Hayden is your grandson. Hope he has a very successful event.
The dawn service at ANZAC is amazing. I was there 21 years ago (the 74th anniversary, before it got super popular, maybe only 150 Kiwi/Ozzie backpackers there at the time, these days I've heard numbers up to 5000).
We caught the last ferry the night before from Cannakkale and just hang out on the beach until the sun came up. I'm not sure if this is allowed anymore.
If at all possible take a moment on the beach to reflect what actually went on. It is an incredibly moving place.
Sorry guys, back to the rally.

Two more days to wait :-)
Looks like we are not going to see to warm rally and we are going to see some rain during the weekend. Showers can appear every day, so the road positioning tactics might not be so important this weekend. And there is quite a long Tarmac section on Saturday where the first car might have advantage compared to the following cars.
So, we can expect unexpected things :-)
And we can see how the Pirelli cars have improved compared to last year
And we also can see how fast are the Civic Type-R cars compared to the much more expensive other JWRC cars :-)

Not really, this is not a rule! Where do you put the line for what is "prejudicial to the interest of competition"?
The FIA is idiotic, why not simply set a rule saying "Starting order of a day cannot be changed due to early/late check-in"?
Obivously the best would be to revert to the decent starting order so we can forget about slowing down, checking early and have back 3 full days of competition to see who is the fastest!

Sorry but in case of late penalty it's impossible not to change order. The only way is that all crews have to wait for the one which is late and that would be even more ridiculous ;)

I'm rubbing the crystal ball here: I guess there won't be much of time difference between Ford boys and Loeb today, if nothing dramatic happens, so I hope they could go flat out through the day. It's up to trio P.Solberg-Sordo-Ogier to lead the rally after Day 1 which then gives good advance to Loeb on Day 2 where he can do what he does the best, and on the longer stages to rip up a gap of 30 sec within first few stages.

usually it is marked on the roadbook when some roads are not allowed to drive by rally cars (maybe there is something that does not like noise or owners does not allow somehow. Otherwise it can happen that you got lost:-) the only punishment is the lost time and extra fuel you use.

Tactics in the World Rally Championship will be a thing of the past following the Rally of Turkey stewards' decision warning crews not to bring the sport into disrepute.
The Ford and Citroen teams have made a private agreement not to repeat some of the tactics which were deployed on the last round of the World Rally Championship in Jordan.
Citroen's team principal Olivier Quesnel told AUTOSPORT that there would be no repeat of any of the factory drivers checking in early to secure a more favourable position on the road. The agreement was reached before the Rally of Turkey stewards released a bulletin warning competitors not to bring the sport into disrepute by using a tactical approach.

No it won't.
We might see slightly less blatant tactics for a little while - ie. the drivers will pace themselves all day to try and not end up leading instead of slowing on the last stage or checking in early.
But wouldn't we rather see the drivers pushing flat out from start to finish?

That chicane was hardly built only for him, many drivers past that before him. So obviously mistake by the crew during recce...

I think it's not such a bad position, the difference between 3rd and 5th on the road is not so big, and he has 16seconds lead over loeb. The only problem is actually finishing tomorrow's last stage before loeb.

He says has serious steering damage to his car after trying to avoid a large rock on the stage but ended up hitting a drainage headwall or the like. He admits it might have been better to have hit the rock.

It's already over. Loeb was fastest, but Ogier and P. Solberg within a second. Latvala lost 1,8s, but Hirvonen 3,4s. Perhaps the most interesting point was Räikkönen being faster than Hirvonen, loosing +3,0s to Loeb.

Flying star of the rally, Mr. Salyuk Jr. The Crazy Mentos survived that gravity-defying jump rather well, if you look at the stage times/positions he drove after that: 11, 11, 10, 12 and 15. He's 15th at the moment and I guess first thing tomorrow he'll eat those few juniors in front of him for breakfast.

Perhaps the most interesting point was Räikkönen being faster than Hirvonen, loosing +3,0s to Loeb.
Räikkönen's time wasn't so good, but Hirvonen was slow.
Kimi has lost compared to fastest times from SS1 to SS9 (sec/km):
1,1 - 2,1 - 1,3 - 1,2 - 1,1 - 1,4 - 1,2 - 0,8 - 1,4
So he's best performance so far was in SS8, not SS9.

And TG, I wasn't pointing on the quality of Räikkönen's performance, merely on the fact that on this stage he was faster than Hirvonen.
