Tack sĺ hemskt mycket!! That would be great!! I have tried to find some stuff on Bo´s Volvo, and also Wayne Baldwin´s 240.

Here is my E-Mail: volvoinmotorsport@yahoo.se

In Sweden there is a lot of 240, 740 and 940 in rallies. In 1997 Mats Karlsson won the National championship with a 940, with a N/A engine putting out 275 hp
Okej ska kolla hur man scannar in Newspapers.

I spent a lot of time with Bo and his co-driver Terry Epp---who went on to be head of "CARS" the Canadian Association of Rally Sport, and even if its a LOT of drinking, we talked and looked at his car very carefully... It was a real GruppA car, Matter alu bur, Getrag 262 close ratio 5 speed BIG brakes....all the things we are used to on good Grupp H Volvos..

I really like the idea of the 240 turbo since we had them all over here in Seattle (which you may not know but it was a city FULL of Swedes and Norsk-djävlar and where in some quarters I used to say that local zoning laws required a minimum of 5 Volvos per block, MINIMUM!

Pentii Arikkala was at that event by local invitation and driving a Mazda RX3 of a friend who was co-driving and it was a big fight till Pentti rolled the car into a little ugly ball, then Bo walked away..

It could have been a nasty DNF for Bo but i was walking over to swap stories and I saw a pretty good drip drip drip of oil, so I peek in and saw bottom fitting on the oil cooler wet--so i reached in and check and it was finger tight and only 2-3 threads left befor the hose ould have fallen off... Bo filled me with lots MORE beer as thanks, real good guy.

And if you want to pop in and see the USA Home of Volvo in Rally, and the biggest advocate look in at http://www.rallyanrchy.com.

I introduced North America to Grupp H and Fcup and have been very vigorous in suggesting that H and F should be the model for what we should be trying to do to do what we never have in rally: build the foundation--grunden o bredden---
I'm supposed to be a saab guy--which all I ever rally, or a Ford Sierra guy cause that's the next car I have, but in last 18 months I have found and gotten 8 guys into 240s and just 1 into a Sierra...
And I make a whole bunch of really REALLY cool things for Volvo...some of it better than what is found back in Sweden--or a better price.

According to this entry list:
http://www.thedeanrallies.com/images/stories/ToD_76_Entry_List.pdf
Ari used LAR800P with Clark in 801, of course what was put on the entry form & what they actually turned up in could be different!
Pentti's registration is given as MLO999P.
The entry list is posted on the Tour of Dean page of the Dean Rallies web site here:
Home | Rally Enthusiasts | Gloucestershire | The Dean Rallies UK (http://www.thedeanrallies.com/)

I am delighted that forum members are visiting The Dean Rallies site for reference purposes, and I apologize for the slight inaccuracy. As Steve Boyd suggested the details listed in the event Official Programme were different on the day. I have now corrected the Competitors Database and will update this section of the website in the near future.
Despite containing nearly 10,000 records the database in very much "work in progress" and I am continually adding christian names and registration numbers.
I am finding information regarding the early Tour of Dean rallies very difficult to find, and as Colin Green said to me " we were too busy doing it to record it."

I must acknowledge the help received from "FAL"

I am delighted that Forum Members are visiting The Dean Rallies website for reference purposes, and I apologize for the slight inaccuracy in this matter. As Steve Boyd suggested the listing in the event Official Programme differed on rally day. I have corrected my Competitors Database and will update the website in the near future.

Despite containing nearly 10,000 entries the database in still "work in progress" and I am constantly adding detail, particularly christian names and registration numbers.

I would welcome any information from Forum Members to enhance this section.

I have encountered difficulty in finding information regarding the early Tour of Dean rallies, and Colin Green told me "we were too busy doing it to record it."

I must acknowledge "FAL" for his contribution to this project.

Hello, I'm looking for some information about the 1965 three cities Rally.I've got the results but It would be great to know something about the route and some pictures also would be awsome.I've got a Mini cooper s which I want to be a perfect replica of the one which has won that rally, therefore any info especially pictures could help a lot...

Hi Neil. I still can't open the Dean "Competitors Database"; just get the message "Bad encrypt dictionary" - which means nothing to me! Must update to latest version of Adobe Reader and see if that fixes it.
I'm about to return to a project to attach as many registration numbers as possible to RAC and Gulf entries (in the days when cars were not reshelled so often with the same number...). Several on here have an interest in such data (I recall telling Jorge about 4 years ago I would send my data when I'd got as far as I could - time flies!). You're welcome to it for the years the RAC and Gulf visited the Dean but it's something that will never be complete!

There is one photo of the 65 Munich-Vienna-Budapest winner (CRX89B) in Bill Price's book on the BMC Comps Dept. Some unusual features are large door-size white numbers on the bonnet, external air horns and a larger than usual Finnish flag on the nearside (Aaltonen's) wing.

Hello!

Can anyone help me with rallies in Denmark in the 1990`s. I am looking for entries made by Swedish driver´s in Volvo 240 turbo.
I know that some Swedes rallied there with these cars, and would be greatful if someone have any info, like entrylists or pics. Or a link to a webpage with info.

Both Kruse and Tony M. did the Toyota Wild West Rally 1994, 2.round of Danish Championship

1980 RAC - RallyBase (http://www.rallybase.nl/index.php?type=result&rallyid=298)

I'm afraid it's the way this forum allows images. It's not my original but a copy of the Motoring News results at the time that someone recently scanned for me, so not so easy for me to make larger. Can you save it and then open and enlarge it?
I have the same for 1980 in an original MN but don't have it scanned at the moment. I also have the 1990 RAC MN but not sure if full results were still printed by MN then. Will check but a bit busy at present.

Hello, I really don't know if this is the right place or the right time to post anything on here, but i googled my dad's name (he passed away in 2006 when i just turned 15)in connection with rally's. I knew he competed in some rally's and i thought it was fun to just google it, i thought i wasn't going to find anything anyway because, oh well it's been such a long time and all the stuff wasn't digitally recorded back then... and what do you know, i just found this post from 2009 on here. It might just be a List, but for me it is huge... i don't know if anyone can understand but to see him listed there was just plain awesome, i can't even really explain why. it just is.

now, does anyone know anything more about races where Muehleck / Zepfel Porsche 911 competed in? it could be a random story, maybe another list, anything would be cool really.

thanks alot.

Here below you can find something more on Your Dad:

Rallye Liege-Rome-Liege in the Fifties

Hi, I am new here and I am searching for a special Ferrari that is said to have taken part in the Rallye Liege-Rome-Liege in the Fifties.
The car I am looking for is Ferrari 166 Inter Coupé with chassis no. 0069S. It should have been in French ownership in that time.
The car is for sale at the moment with Talacrest in the UK. Pictures can be found on their website.

I have for the Rallye the following Ferrari taking part, but none of them is 0069S.

1951:
No Ferrari
1952:
#41 Heyman / Leguezec - Ferrari 212 Export - s/n 0190ED
#110 Lucas / Marchand - Ferrari 225S - s/n 0164ED
1953:
#68 Herzet / Bianchi - Ferrari 166MM Vignale - s/n0300M
#107 Fayen / Botchaco - Ferrari 212 Export - s/n0096E
1954:
#12 Lanz / Sagesser - Ferrari 250MM - s/n0334MM)
#103 Herzet / Bianchi - Ferrari 166MM Barchetta - s/n0300M
1955:
No Ferrari
1956:
#60 Gendebien / Stasse - Ferrari 250 GT Europa
1957:
#72 De Lannoy / Henry - Ferrari 195 Ghia - s/n0089S
1958:
No Ferrari
1959:
No Ferrari

Would be great if somebody could help.

Not sure how much interest there is on this Forum but I have made a very small start on a long term project to make the Tynemouth Computer Services archive of rally results going back to 1974 available on the web. The results are mainly British events from Club level to International status. Do not expect this to happen instantly. My outline plan at the moment is to do what I can for 1984 and then work backwards. These early results will be scans of the original results saved in Adobe Acrobat pdf format. The quality is not great but I think is just about usable. The reason for working back from 1984 is that there is some hope we can retrieve digital data for events from the mid 1980s onwards but earlier than that will be difficult and pre 1980 impossible. The 1984 data which is available currently is at Tynemouth Computer Services - Rally Results from 1984 (http://www.rallyresults.org/History/1984/index.html) I am adding one or two events per day at the moment. There is a discussion thread over at BritishRally see British Rally (http://www.britishrally.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49581&start=0) Our results from 1995 to 2004 have been available for some time at David James's archive British Special Stage Rally Championships (http://archive.djames.org.uk/) and 2004 to the present is available at Tynemouth Computer Services - Results Archive (http://www.tynecomp.co.uk/Archive/index.html)

That looks useful information. While you are doing it can I suggest adding the source of the results - ie their provenance. It will help in tracking down any anomalies (after all, even even Sheldon's famous 'black books' of racing results contain errors). I tried a couple and they appeared to be produced by the organising clubs. Is that the case for all of them?

FAL

Err... I think Martin produced them for the organising clubs.

The bit at the bottom of the pages that reads "Results by Tynemouth Computer Services" is a bit of a hint. These are copies of the official event results; in some cases we were working directly for the organising clubs but in most cases we were working for one of the championships. In 1984 we had contracts with Castrol/Autosport, BTRDA, Rallysport and the Ford Escort Turbo championship if I remember correctly.

I wish I shared your belief that prime source material will have 'no chance of errors'. I have been doing results for too long to believe that what we publish is perfect. It is the best we can do with the information available but there always little things that slip through eg the organisers forget to tell us about a late change of car or class or one of the crew members. In 1984 we would have been retyping the entry list information supplied by the organisers and typing mistakes occured and the crew don't point them out. These days we have on-line entry systems and we import information but this means less scrutiny of the raw data and still little things slip through. We do the best we can with the information we have but in the real world there will always be little things wrong for the historians to pick over.

Fair point. I suppose I meant "without the chance of further errors and 're-interpretations' creeping in" which can occur with secondary sources.

Sorry I meant to reply yesterday. Tynemouth Computer Services produced the results but that may have been myself or David James or occasionally Ron Jackson and in rarer instance one of a number of other people. We have been able to handle two events on the same weekend for a long time but three or even four events has always been a bit of a stretch.

As I was browsing ERC results on GEL website I came across this:

1957 Ruprecht Hopfen Saab 93/Borgward

Initially I thought that this 'Borgward' was a name of some special Saab 93 model. But as I checked Google it turned out to be a cars make name that I never heard about. I read some information on Wikipedia about those what it seem to be long forgotten cars but there's no information on cars that participated in rallies or road races back in the 50's. So I'd appreciate it very much if someone could shed some light on this topic (or point me in right direction).

FAL
2nd March 2013, 21:21
Borgward (a model named the Isabella?) even featured in the British Saloon car Championship. A Borgward engine, probably loosely based on that one, was also used in the back of F2 Coopers, including the Rob Walker car driven by Stirling Moss.
Can't recall any specific rally appearances (it's a bit before my time...) but I'm sure there were.

Two Isabellas finished the Safari in 1956 but were unplaced. This was the softest Safari ever with 78 finishers from 90 starters

grisza
3rd March 2013, 13:24
Do you know maybe what version of Isabella it was that Ruprecht Hopfen drove in 1957? Was it saloon, coupe or TS (cabrio)?

BTW, I found that back in 1957 Borgward Isabella TS raced Mille Miglia but didn't finish. Also I found some traces of Borgward cars in Acropolis Rally:
1956 - 19. Wendker / Westerholt -D- Borgward
1958 - 18. Dr Joachim Kühling - Kurt Schöttler -D- Borgward Isabella

Again if someone knows what versions raced in Acropolis Rally please let me know.

Thank you; I hope it will be wonderful in due course. I am trying to decide whether to eventually widen the scope to include other British events where TCS did not produce the results. Certainly in the period 1979 to 1990 the major omissions are some of the British International events. Anyway for the moment I will try and complete the current project.

Well, not really as '73 is way off my scope. But it really strikes me how fast things got forgotten and how little we can reconstruct from the past. And it's not that distant time - only 60 years. Anyway, I hope maybe someone will find some more information on those Borgward cars.

Intrigued by the '83 Welsh Rally results sheet, listing Jimmy McRae as winning 'Class 7' ahead of Weidner's works 80 Quattro. What was 'Class 7'? Can't just be Group B cars, as otherwise the Quattros would surely have been classified ahead of the Manta; and the Chevette as well, presumably, given that for '83 I was under the impression it was running as a Group B car?

Class 7 was Group B over 1600cc. I think you are looking at the awards list not the class results page which is after the stage times pages. Art 27.3 of the regulations says that the first three overall are not eligible for class awards. We have always treated the Awards List and the Class Results as two separate entities.

I don't have 58 entry list but someone there has probably posted it before (or will do so if asked, ignoring copyright as usual...)I agree that "the French" do seem to have a cavalier attitude to copyright. This may be due to the French Law being less restrictive than English Law in the interpretation of "Fair use".
However, there is no copyright restriction on facts, such as a list of the cardinals who elected the Pope. Any copyright restriction that exists can only relate to the method of presentation and format. So, reproducing a published list by posting a scan, ie making a facsimile, is a copyright breach. But copy type the basic list, change the font or juxtapose two columns and there is no breach of copyright as you have created something new. However it is courtesy to acknowledge the source of your information. In the context of this thread it does help to validate the information.
If the list included "pen portraits" as they are "literary works" they are copyright and copy typing them would be a breach of copyright.

What is the list supposed to represent? [European] Championship rallies? International rallies? Any rallies?

Is the Midnattsolsrallyt the 'Rally to the Midnight Sun' that later became the Swedish Rally?
Finland's Rally of a Thousand Lakes qualifies on all counts
There was a German Rally at one time (not the Rallye Wiesbaden)
The Circuit of Ireland was an international rally but I don't think it was part of the European Championship
The Scottish Rally likewise
When the Mille Miglia race was stopped after the 1957 fatal accident, the event continued for a year or two as a rally
Tour de Luxembourg was run at least once when it was curtailed due to a fatal accident
Jugoslavanska Alpska Voznha (Yugoslavian Alpine Rally)
Stella Alpina (run by the Automobile Club Trento)
In the USA they had a European style rally titled the 'Press on Regardless' which I think had international status at one stage
The [Redex] Round Australia Trial was really a rally

What is the list supposed to represent? [European] Championship rallies? International rallies? Any rallies? It's just my personal list of rallies from the 50's that I found somehow interesting. I wanted to short-list international rallies from Europe (with those few exceptions I mentioned above), and rather bigger, better known events with large number of starters, and tough competition for both cars and drivers.
As my only source of information is GEL Motorsport Information Page I have very little idea about those rallies. That's why I wanted to ask if someone could verify this list for me please?

Is the Midnattsolsrallyt the 'Rally to the Midnight Sun' that later became the Swedish Rally?Yes, that's the (AFAIK) original name of this famous rally.

Finland's Rally of a Thousand Lakes qualifies on all countsThat's good as I got it on my list as Jyvaskylan Suurajot (again original name).

There was a German Rally at one time (not the Rallye Wiesbaden)But AFAIK, Rallye Wiesbaden was part of ERC - am I right? At least in 1953 and '54. Don't know anything about yet another rally from Germany (apart from ADAC-Rallye Travemunde).

The Circuit of Ireland was an international rally but I don't think it was part of the European Championship
The Scottish Rally likewiseThank you for letting me know about those two islander's rallies ;) I'll try to find some information on them too.

When the Mille Miglia race was stopped after the 1957 fatal accident, the event continued for a year or two as a rally
Tour de Luxembourg was run at least once when it was curtailed due to a fatal accidentMille Miglia is a different story so I will skip it. And this Tour de Luxembourg seems to be only a brief moment in history of rallies. But thank you for mentioning it as I didn't know about this one.

Jugoslavanska Alpska Voznha (Yugoslavian Alpine Rally)That's interesting too but I'm pretty sure it will be almost impossible to find any more details on this one.

Stella Alpina (run by the Automobile Club Trento)I got it on my list but I'm not sure if it fits my requirements? Was it a big event?

In the USA they had a European style rally titled the 'Press on Regardless' which I think had international status at one stage
The [Redex] Round Australia Trial was really a rallyThese are definitely off my scope of interest as I prefer the old world ;)

All I know about the Stella Alpina is from a book about Alpine Trials and Rallies - ie principally the Alpine Rally. It was run from 1947 t0 1955 with a length between 1000km and 1500km and was a cross between a race and a rally. Winners were all Italian apart from 1955 when Olivier Gendebien / Mlle Gilberte Thirion won in a 300SL.

If you are confining to the 50s, the Scottish and Circuit of Ireland were just glorified tours then before being great rallies in the 60s and European Championship rounds in the 70s (some might say the RAC was a glorified navigation exercise then, but those are also the ones who didn't drive 5 days with one night in bed on it...).
Surprised to see the Boucles de Spa there in 50s - it was later a European Championship round of course.
The "Rally of the Thousand Lakes" was always an unofficial name. What translates as "The Trial of Jyvaskyla" was the true name until it became Rally Finland in the modern era. It was little known outside Finland (and Sweden I suppose) until the 60s.
The USA Press on Regardless and Canadian Rideau Lakes were briefly "world rallies" in the 70s before sinking back into national oblivion, unknown in the 50s.

@D-Type - Could you tell me please what other rallies are covered in this book?

@FAL - thank you for information on those rallies from Ireland and Scotland. I think I will add them to my list (or at least one of them). As for Boucles de Spa - it started in 1953 (don't know the exact date) so that's why it is on my list. But I have no idea whether it was a big, international event back in 50's.

Regarding my list, could you tell me please what rallies were restricted to only one car class and what type of class it was?

The book is Alpine Trials & Rallies 1910 t0 1973 by Martin Pfundner

This little book covers all the events in the period stated as a narrative with some rallies covered in more detail than others. It briefly explains the history and politics with the different Alpine nations taking more and less interest at diferent times. It gives results for each: sometimes overall winner, only and sometimes, top three overall and in class. It also lists all winners of Coupes des Alpes.
Rallies covered in the results:
Alpenfaht (Austria) 1910-14
Austrian Alpine Trials 1923, 1925, 1928, 1930, 1933, 1934
Alfold-Alpenfahrt (Austria) 1923, 1924, 1930
Coupe Internationale des Alpes (7 national clubs) 1928-34, 1936
Swiss Alpione Trial 1924
Deutsch Alpenfahrt 1938-39
Rallye des Alpes Francaises 1932-136, 1938-39, 1946-154, 1956, 1958-69, 1971
Osterreichische Alpenfahrt 1949-73
Jugoslovanska Alpska Voznja 1952-55
Coppa delle Alpi 1921-25
Stella Alpina 1947-55

As to types of cars, I only know about the Safari:
1953-56 "Absolutely unmodified" standard touring cars in 4 classes by price with a class handicap
1957 Standard touring cars in 3 classes by price with a class handicap (as this was the first year it had "International" status these were probably Group 1 cars if that classification existed then)
1958 Standard touring cars in 3 classes by price no class handicap, no overall winner
1959 Standard touring cars in 3 classes by price no class handicap
1960 Standard touring cars in 5 capacity classes, plus a class for "Improved Production and GT cars"
1961 Standard touring cars in 5 capacity classes
1962-63 Standard touring cars in 7 capacity classes
1964-67 Standard touring cars in 6 capacity classes
1968 Standard touring cars in 4 capacity classes
1969 Group 1 touring cars in 6 capacity classes
1970 Group 1 and Group 2 cars in 5 capacity classes each, ie the standard for the World Rally Championship for makes
and from there onwards it followed the World Rally Championship groups and classes

I hope that's clear ;)

As far as I know, the Safari was the only major rally to limit the categories of entries. History tends to get distorted by what made the news at the time. The 66 Monte Carlo Rally (first major rally under the revised Appendix J) was not limited to Group One cars but that's what you would think reading a lot of retro articles today. (It just handicapped Gp2 and 3 cars' times to such an extent that realistically only a Gp1 car could win).
The European Rally Championship (that was then the equivalent status of a non existent world championship) went through a phase of only allowing a couple of categories to score ERC points on each round eg. Gp1 and 2 on one rally, Gp2 and 3 on the next, Gp1 and 3 the next etc. - but the events themselves did not restrict categories.
Something I was reminded of the other day: it was well into the 50s before International Competition Licences were required on all International Rallies. The Monte was one (presumably because of its history of a bunch of Hooray Henrys lurching across Europe on a winter jolly jape). The Safari may have been another, as an RAF fighter pilot I knew who was based at Eastleigh once entered his wife's Peugeot 403 "because it was there" (and his marriage never did recover...).

As your RAF pilot friend was 'resident' in Kenya at the time, he could have obtained a Kenyan (or maybe East African) competition licence which would allow him to run in the Safari.

When did the CSI introduce Group 1, Group 2 etc?

I wasn't sure whether Kenya had its own (ie. separate from UK) comp licences then. I'm pretty sure this guy didn't have a British one. Strange situation even now with some former UK "colonies" that are now independent nations but not FIA affiliated. If a small country today just has a small relatively disorganised amount of local motorsport, it's not viable to fund FISA registration. That leaves anyone there who wants to compete Internationally with a problem if they hold only one passport. Antigua is an example I'm familiar with. Of course, the UK is one country where just having an address there is enough to get a British Competition Licence. No doubt it's supposed to be your address but... I think Shekhar Mehta was in that position on first leaving Uganda.

I've never thoroughly researched when CSI/FISA/FIA Appendix J first went live. Something existed earlier but 1958 is often quoted as the year everyone was finally singing from the same hymn sheet.

In colonial times (pre-1960 or so), although they were nominally separate countries with different legal status the four East African territories were governed as a unit with one currency and no internal customs barriers. Banks and other businesses covered all the countries generally with an HQ in Nairobi and branches in the other capitals and major towns. The Royal East African Automobile Association (REAAA) reflected this and covered all of East Africa. It was affiliated to the RAC and as far as I know did not have its own membership of the FIA. It administered motor sport on behalf of the RAC with considerable autonomy, for example the REAAA isssued competition licences valid in all four countries. But it was subservient to the RAC in major issues, for example when there was a storm of protests in 1958 about the seals on the Ford suspension, the appeal went to the RAC for resolution. So your friend would have had a locally issued competition licence to run in the Safari.

With the coming of independence the REAAA became the Automobile Association of East Africa but still had its HQ in Nairobi. Eventually it became a member of the FIA in its own right, but representing only Kenya.

A few more clues from a Jaguar book:
"In 1953, Ian Appleyard foresook XKs, which were no longer eligible for the Monte Carlo Rally, for a Mk VII and finished a fine second in the general classification." I don't know if this meant that 2-seaters were no longer allowed or whether cars now had to be closed - I suspect it was 'no more 2-seaters'
XK 120s competed in the Alpine, the Tulip, the Liege-Sofia-Liege and the RAC so obviously 2-seaters were admitted to those events. They wouild have been in a separate class, probably with a stiffer time penalty than the saloons.
I have even seen photos of C-Type Jaguars running in the "Rallye Soleil Cannes' and the 'Tour de France'. As about 50 C-Types were made, they may have qualified as 'Production' cars.

And a bit more.

The November 1954 Motor Sport reports on the October 6th meeting of the CSI and some interesting things come out.
(1) A resolution to rename the "Touring Championship of Europe as the "Rally Championship of Europe" was defeated
(2) The Championship was to be for Group 1 (Standard series production cars) and Group 2 (Grand Touring) cars
(3) The 1955 Championship to comprise the following rallies:

Nurburgring

Nurburgring? Could you tell me please what kind of rally was it?

As for my list (http://www.motorsportforums.com/history/128974-rally-history-part-iii-105.html#post1119208) I would have a couple of more questions:

1. What happened to Rallye Wiesbaden? It was a part of ERC in '53 and '54 but not in '55 anymore.
2. When rallies with multiple starting points (Monte-Carlo, RAC, Lisboa, Tulip) ceased using this formula?
3. Which rallies used at least 70% non-tarmac roads? AFAIK, Acropolis and Moroccan had almost 100% gravel roads, and Safari a mix of gravel, sand and mud I guess. Also Rallye del Sestriere was a bit different since it was held in late February and most of the roads were covered in snow (but I'm judging it only from some pictures I googled). And what about the others?

D-Type

I am simply quoting what the magazine report said. I'm afraid I don't know details. Maybe the Nurburgring and Wiesbaden Rallies were the same event as the two places are only about 60mi / 100km apart.

Your description of East African roads is about right. Very few inter-town roads were tarmac. Some roads were classified as 'dry weather only' and some as 'all-weather' - the latter being those with a higher stone and gravel content. As the rally developed, the route tended to follow secondary roads which were never tarmac.

The first Safari (1953) had multiple starting points (Nairobi, Morogoro and Kampala) but this was abandoned in subsequent years.

FAL

I think Lisboa sunk after foreign crews were heavily penalised for not having black numbers on a white background and local crews won. They were penalised twice, once for each side of the car...
The old story of factions within the sport in certain countries. No evidence, but the more welcome faction may have only finally emerged victorious when the TAC Rally became a popular International in the late 60s (ironically with multiple starting points, when the Monte was the only other remaining multi-start event).

I don't think you will ever establish the exact mix of surfaces, even with all the official rally documents. For example, it is comparatively recently (70s) that the RAC Rally began to issue any meaningful advance information about the stages. In total mileage, the Acropolis had plenty of tarmac, just not used for most of the more competitive sections. The competitive element in Sweden and Finland was gravel and there were (are still) comparatively few tarmac main roads. The Liege had reduced gravel as more and more Alpine passes became surfaced but more as it pushed further into eastern Europe.
The 58 RAC Rally still had a choice of starts (Blackpool or Hastings). I don't think the 59 edition did (Jack Kemsley's first as organiser) and the "forest" RACs of 60 onwards didn't.

Grisza, a few more pieces for your jigsaw from Motor Sport magazine. What are you planning to do with this information?

In addition to the European Touring Championship, ie Rally Championship, there was also a European Women's Touring Championship

In 1952 the CSI first defined a Standard Touring Car and in 1954 they introduced 'Forms of Recognition', ie homologation forms.

The 1958 Acropolis Rally had Trieste and Athens as starting points

The 1954 Championship rounds were:
Monte Carlo Rally
Sestriere Rally
RAC Rally
Tulip Rally
Travenmunde Rally
Rally to the Midnight Sun
Alpine Rally
Liege-Rome-Liege
Viking Rally
Rally of the Snow (Geneve)
Lisbon Rally

In 1959 the qualifiers were:
Monte Carlo Rally
Sestriere Rally
Tulip Rally
German Rally
Acropolis Rally
Rally to the Midnight Sun
Alpine Rally
Adriatic Rally
Rally of the Million Lakes (Finland)
Liege-Rome-Liege
Viking Rally
Portuguese Rally
RAC Rally

Points in the 1959 Championship were only awarded to 'Production Touring cars (1000 off, saloon car bodies)

Thank you guys for all your replies and information provided. As for ERC '54 - are you sure it was Rallye Travemünde?

The website I'm using says it was Rallye Wiesbaden:

European Rally Championship (http://www.dlg.speedfreaks.org/archive/www2/euroral/euroral.html)

And it seems that Rallye Wiesbaden became later the International German Rally. That's what German wiki says:

Rallye Wiesbaden (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rallye_Wiesbaden)

Unfortunately I couldn't find any information on Rallye Travemünde.

I'm afraid that's all I could find searching the 1950's Motor Sport CD ROM - They didn't list the Championship rallies every year. The lists were published in the November or December magazines and were the lists provided by the CSI or the RAC for the following year.
Perhaps the Weisbaden was originally listed as Rallye Travemünde in October 1953 and by the time it was run it had become the Rallye Weisbaden. As I said above, the two towns aren't that far apart so it could well be the same rally. Or perhaps one club found they couldn't run a major rally so the other took over, or ....? Even in those pre-sponsorship days the names of rallies did change.

As far as I can make out the title "Rally Deutschland" and ERC status was given to a pre-existing event (at least most years) a bit the way the title "European Grand Prix" was used in the 1950s and 60s.

Wiesbaden seemed to be the most favoured but exceptions I know of are:

I don't think 1967 was an ERC round. Do you agree?

Seems it was 66 that Hopkirk had to write a letter of apology to get his entry (or rather BMC's for him) accepted, following comments in his Autosport column about the 65 event. (source: Bill Price, in who's books I often seem to struggle with the correct year)
Sure I've seen adverse comments from Elford about the 66 German too (but then he probably had something bad to say about all the 66 events he did for Ford...)

They ran in Bulgaria, in 1977. You can see one of the Escorts(LUH591) in this video 00:35, 01:43, Wothen at 02:34(no.22.):
http://lepoldsportvideo.hu/videok/balint_arpad_rally_archiv/14resz_bulgaria_1977.wmv

I am working on the correct start-list, but I am not 100% sure, probably:
George Lidbury(?) - John(?)Simpson GB Ford Escort RS
Christopher Wothen - George(?) Simpson GB Ford Escort RS 2000

A bit of a random one, but the Almeras Porsche team were always sponsored by Eminence, what was/is Eminence?!

D-Type
7th May 2013, 19:40
I Googled 'Eminence' and not many companies came up. Eminence Speakers (http://www.eminence.com/) appears to be the most likely candidate. I doubt if it was Eminence Organic Skin Care (http://us.eminenceorganics.com/) or the Brazilian pop group Eminence (http://www.eminence.com.br/)

But I have to admit I am only guessing.

FAL
7th May 2013, 21:27
We wondered also about Eminence, back in the day. Then in 82 or 83, on receiving the programme for Ypres at signing on, there was a large advert in Flemish in it, stating: "Eminence - in de pupen" and a photo of an item of male underwear, padded out to an unlikely degree at the front...
In 83 the Eminence sponsored car was, I think, the 037 of Zanussi but I'm sure I recall the name on the Charles Pozzi Ferrari 308GTB of Francis Vincent (who of course previously drove an Almeras Porsche).

Entry list, yes. If you can find them on line, please let us all know!
I gather from elsewhere you are actually interested in one car in particular rather than the whole lot.
If you really need the full list I can send it but on the basis of personal use only/not for wider circulation/publication. Some others on here also have it but the difficulty in finding it means we are cautious about it freely arriving with prolific "for profit" authors who have done no real research of their own for their books.
(It's the RAC International Rally of Great Britain, by the way)

Thank you 'FAL', and yes you are quite right (from elsewhere!) that I was actually just looking for details of one single entry!...

...it was the #27 MGA of W.S.B. Clayton / W.G. Langstone. The reason for asking about that particular event and entry is that I have recently acquired the following Coventry Evening Telegraph photo, showing the MGA tackling the Wolvey skid pan near Coventry. If anybody can confirm an entrant, registration number or final result that would indeed be most appreciated...

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd407/DWS1963/PRIVATE/ClaytonMGA1960RAC499_zps0a0e7b54.jpg

Sorry 'FAL' - I didn't mean to tread on anyone's toes!

I am not an author of any kind, but just a 'simple' enthusiastic collector looking for some background information to file with a recent acquisition, and nothing more...

Is any of the registration number clear enough to read on your original? Every little bit of information helps.

FAL
15th May 2013, 23:08
I gather Dave Thomas has now sent you his entry list. I have that and had added data to it but can confirm nothing new added about that car. Yes it is the Wolvey test.
Marcus Chambers' book "Works Wonders" covers the 60 RAC in greater detail than many other events it records. You can piece together from it a complete list of all the tests. I'll re-read it to see if a non-works MGA gets a mention.

Fred Gallagher
16th May 2013, 11:02
The gentlemen in the MGA finished 123rd overall and 16th in class having incurred 21,111 road penalties. 21,057 of these were from the first two sections Blackpool to Brough to Peebles and thereafter they had a pretty good run.

Fred

FAL
16th May 2013, 14:51
No mention of that car by Marcus Chambers or Bill Price in their books. Probably safe to assume it was not an ex-works car (which I don't think were white).
The first 3 in the 1301-2000 GT class (class 7) were:
1. Douglas Johns/Rev. Rupert Jones, ex-works (not works loaned) Wolseley 1500.
2. J.Melvin/W.Bennett, Sunbeam (not clear whether an Alpine or a Gp3 Rapier).
3. C.Bent Marshall/D.Pratt/R.Gahan, Wolseley.
It may be worth highlighting that, if all 3 were saloon cars (in a GT class), saloons modified beyond Group 2 rules were categorised as Gp3 GT cars under the then FIA rules.

(It never ceases to amaze me how many people rallied 3 up Wolseley 1500s /Riley 1.5s. I recall them as cramped inside, even compared to a Mini).
Apart from having a very silly name for a rally driver, C Bent Marshall's claim to fame today is that he was later navigated (in a Cooper S, including on the Monte) by the father of comedian/actor Alan Davies.

Cosworth - probably the 1986 RAC. This was the UK Challenge spec car quickly homologated into GroupB to enable 3 Challenge competitors to use their cars on the RAC.
In GpA both Cosworth and XR4x4 probably 1987 Monte Carlo Rally.
Escort MK2 - difficult to ever prove because Mk1 or 2 would not have been identified on most entry lists. May have been Circuit of Ireland 1975, a 1300? (RS1800 - Welsh 1975 first International, Granite City 1975 first National/first event).
I'm not even sure what a Subaru rx turbo is but the earliest International use of a 4wd Subaru is usually considered Simon Everett 1973 Welsh.
Renault 11 Turbo - ask on Forum Auto but may be Alan Oreille on a French Int event?
BMW M3 may have been Prodrive becauser BMW were less than keen on seeing it in rallies until then (and not that keen then until Prodrive won Corsica). In racing, first round of 1987 WTCC (or was it stll ETCC then?), which was Monza...where they all got excluded for wrong boot material.

Small typo there FAL - should be 1983.
Incidentally I was called in as a late addition to the service crew. Simon's regular man, Nigel Wills Browne, was driving his van back from servicing for Simon on the Zlatni Piassatsi (I think) on 5 cylinders after removing a damaged piston & rod and clamping the big end shells back on the crank with jubilee clips to keep the oil pressure up!
I drove the Subaru from scrutineering to the pre-start parc-fermé — does that make me the first person to drive a Subaru on an International Rally?

Regarding the Mk2 Escort - I have a vague recollection of it being used somewhere in the Caribean by Timo Makinen at the very beginning of its career. Could that have been its debut?

Possum Bourne probably ran the first Subaru RX in Rally NZ. In 1983 Rally NZ he ran a Subaru RX Coupe, in 1984 it was called a Subaru Leone 4WD RX Hardtop. In 1985 he ran a Subaru Leone RX Turbo as part of a 4 car team with Tony Teesdale (NZ), Carlo Vittuli (Kenya) and Frank Tundo (Kenya).

Blahna - Hlavka CS Skoda 130 RS 228 points, 2. Petkov - Gurlev BG Lada 1600 211 points, 3. Pavlik - Gottfried CS Skoda 130 RS 198 points. Very probably 5. Agishev - Titov SU Moskvitch 2140 . I will be very happy if somebody can help me.

I have no official full-reuslts of '77 CPF, only some data(?) from old Hungarian journal:

2. Petkov - Gurlev BG Lada 1600 211 points
2. Petkov 210 points

5. Agishev - Titov SU Moskvitch 2140
4. Agishev 187 points

I competed in the 1977 RACE rally with Enrique (Henri) Inurrieta in a Group 1 RS2000,start number 20.
After the first leg, we wer 5th overall
Positions after Leg 1 (16 of 26 stages): 1 Munari 2:05.34; 2 Fernández +3.52; 3 Mouton +5.49; 4 Cańellas +10.16; 5 Inurrieta +16.10; 6 Trabado +17.01; 7 Dumont +18.25; 8 Serviŕ +20.42; 9 Salvi +24.40; 10 Perejoan +27.03; 11 De Sousa +28.16; 12 Torres +28.48; 13 Bonet +29.20; 14 Muńoz +31.53; 15 Lacasa +32.28.

We took those 6 seconds off Mouton, and due to other retirements and problems we were leading the rally overall when we slid of the edge of a very muddy bridge with no parapet, and the front wheels dropped off the concrete, with no way to get back on again. Bitter disappointment of course, but remember we were in a group 1 car, and Mouton had a full works Porsche!!

Thank you all! As this project continues, I'll have more "blanks" to fill in. When completed, I'll try to post the results or at least a link to them. Thanks again for the help. Cheers

Are you looking only for results from 1958-1960?
Do you want only the highest placed SAAB? Or are you looking for all of them?

No, not just 1958 -60, but from Saabs start in Rallying in 1950 thru the 1980s. I'm looking for placements in the top 10 of any event, with the following details:
Event, location/country, Saab model, vehicle event number, vehicle registration number, finishing placement, and of course, driver and co-driver. It's surprising how difficult it is to find this information - many of the minor rallies have very little information available - sometimes even the country location is a mystery!
Thus far the sources I've used are the books, Rally Giants - 96 & V4, by Graham Robson and From Two-troke to Turbo, Saab Motorsport Since 1949, by Anders Tunberg. The data websites most used are
http://www.dlg.speedfreaks.org/archive/ ... uro.html#5 (http://www.dlg.speedfreaks.org/archive/www2/euroral/53euro.html#5) and
http://www.teamdan.com/archive/www2/mis ... iscra.html (http://www.teamdan.com/archive/www2/miscral/50miscra.html)

If anyone knows of other websites please let me know. Thanks.

Do you need any Safari details? I have a book of Safari history that lists all finishers. Driver, model, but not rally number or registration number apart from what's in various photos in the books. But I don't want to waste time ferreting out data you already have.

Many of these dates are from the ewrc (http://www.ewrc-results.com/search.php) website. But there is also a considerable amount of dates from other sources.

Unfortunately it seems that http://www.rallybase.nl is definitely offline. What a shame!
But once the following data have been gathered I will show them here anyway. Maybe they are of use to anyone else.

The current server issues for RallyBase should only be temporary - I'm in touch with the helpdesk of my webhost to sort things out. In fact, the site went down when I was doing some updates for the first time in over a year last Saturday...

René Kuipers, b. 09 February 1960 (this is the father of Dennis Kuipers; I don’t know if there is a namesake who was born on 24 March 1970 or if that date is wrong; maybe someone can clarify this)

09 February 1960 is indeed the birthdate of René Kuipers. http://www.fermwrt.com/rally_team

Thank you very much for all your notes.

It is nice that RallyBase is back too. :)
