Hi Stan...

9. #??? Gisbert ( my Karl-Heinz ) Fröhlich (DEU)/Rainer Wüllner (DEU) - Ford Escort RS2000 .

Regarding Alpin you're right... Maybe because 8th is #90 and 9th is #80 ??? anyway correct ois...

Hi Steve...

From my usual source, "25 Years of the Manx Rally" by Doug Baird & Gordon Kniveton

Unfortunately I can't help with 1988. The last year in the book is 1987, the 25th running of the rally. I haven't got 1989 or 1990 either but I have the official results for 1991 to 2010 if anyone needs anything from those years.

Here what I have for Manx 88...
1988 - 26º Tudor Webasto Manx International Rally
1. #2 Patrick Snijers (BEL)/Dany Colebunders (BEL) - BMW M3 - 3H30:38
2. #1 Jimmy McRae (GBR)/Rob Arthur (GBR) - R.E.D. / Ford Sierra RS Cosworth - + 0:21
3. #??? Phil Collins (GBR)/Bryan Thomas (GBR) - Ford Sierra RS Cosworth - + 6:36
4. #3 Fabrizio Tabaton (ITA)/Luciano Tedeschini (ITA) - H.F. Grifone / Lancia Delta Integrale - + 7:46
5. #6 Malcolm Wilson (GBR)/Ian Grindrod (GBR) - GM Dealersport / Vauxhall Astra GT/E - + 8:55
6. #7 Pentti Airikkala (FIN)/Ronan McNamee (GBR) - Mitsubishi Starion Turbo - + 9:51
7. #??? Louise Aitken-Walker (GBR)/Ellen Morgan (GBR) - Peugeot Talbot Sport / Peugeot 205 Gti - + 13:18
8. #??? Chris Birkbeck (GBR)/Trevor Godden (GBR) - GM Dealersport / Vauxhall Astra GT/E - + 14:58
9. #??? Simon Davison (GBR)/Steve Bond (GBR) - Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v - + 15:47
10. #??? Ian Tilke (GBR)/??? Wray (GBR) - Ford Sierra RS Cosworth - + 17:02

If you want 89 and 90 I have those too..
Since I have (all most) all of top 10 ERC, now I'm trying to retrieve all the other results for rallys that have at least 1 ERC event...
Huge work... so for sure i'll need Manx 63->75 and 97->now...
When I'll reach "Great Britain" (I'm now at France...) I'll be back to you... Thanks in advance!

Best Regards
Américo

I don't think that Kostas Tanoussis was driving this period. We was a kid :-)
The drives is most likely his father, Zois Tanoussis.

Thanks Harris...

But you know, some great champions started very early... ;)

BTW do you have birth dates for those drivers???

Best regards
Américo.

On another forum someone is asking:
"Does anybody have an entry list for the 1964 Circuit of Ireland?"
and (curiously)
"Does anybody know who drove the Aston Martin DB4 course car?"

If you can help please PM me - or post the info here.
The Clerk of the Course driving the DB4 was Robin McKinney.

I'm surprised nobody has an entry list?

Janusz,
There was no! Cordatic rallye in 1973.
In 1973 the Taurus Rallye(31.8-1.-9.) was the Hungarian round of the CPF Championship.

1974

If Subaru had stayed in the WRC for 2009 who would have been the drivers? One of them was Gronholm?

Would Guy Wilks have had a seat?

Any help is appreciated; I am not sure if the year 2009 is "historic" enough =p

The basic rule I use is if the topic involves drivers still competing then it isn't historic yet. But that really applies to discussions not a simple question like this.
What you could have done (and I'm not saying do it retrospectively) is open a new thread and flag it as history - then it appears in both bulletin boards.

While I'm on, I feel that this thread is getting very long and unwieldy. Should we close it and start a series of threads on the history ofndividual rallies or series. What do people think?

The posting volume on average is not high and having it in one thread has the advantage of only needing to check a single thread on the relatively infrequent times I drop in. If you split it there could be a vast numbrt of threads, most with very few posts.

Steve Boyd

I agree. It's easy to drop in every so often and learn some interesting facts, make the odd contribution and perhaps re-kindle memories. If you try to divide it up into events it becomes difficult to know where to put championship queries. If it's divided into championships where do you put a question about one event over a number of years. As Martin says you would finish up with a lot of short threads as each new question would almost certainly have to start a new thread of its own.

I'm a strong believer in "If it aint broke - don't fix it" so I will leave the thread alone at this stage.

But, can we be sure that someone looking for information on, say, the Acropolis Rally or the Sestieres Rally will know how to look on here? That is the main reason I'm suggesting a split.

No we can't be sure. If Rally History was a Forum in its own right then having lots of threads would be fine but as a relatively small part of a Motor Sport History Forum I fear that they might get lost; open to be persuaded otherwise.

Hi Janusz,

The Boucles de Spa entry lists of 2002 and 2003 are here: Chronométrage - Races Information Services - Tag Heuer - Chronelec (http://www.ris-timing.be) (click on '2004', scroll a bit and click on 'Boucles de Spa', than you see also 2002 and 2003). Fascinating! I grew up in Kenya in the fifties and early sixties and Easter weekend meant - simply - the Safari.

At that time, ie up to about 1967 or so, the cars had to be Group 1, absolutely bog standard with no modifications allowed. But it was run on mainly "main", but still dirt and bumpy, roads. After that, limited modifications were allowed. And by 1970 the rally was open to Group 2 cars. It was only later when highly modified cars were allowed that the real "car killer" roads were introduced.

Group 1, absolutely bog standard with no modifications allowed

A contradiction in terms! Let's not give further circulation to the myth that Gp1 meant standard!
I appreciate the Safari was more restricted than FIA Gp1 at one time. I think we have previously covered on here the actual changes/dates.

I have no intention of promoting any myths! The original intention was "Absolutely standard, the same as any East African motorist could buy from a car showroom". The classes were even based on retail price. When the rally went international the REAAA adopted the current FIA Group 1.

Can you please provide a link to where this was discussed as I don't fancy ploughing through 1700+ posts looking for it.

I would if I didn't have to go through 1700 posts...
Do we have them all still? I thought someone said recently we'd lost earlier parts of the thread? The regular rally historians were involved IIRC and I'm sure someone confirmed 1967 was the first time Gp2 was alllowed.
What was confusing in 67 was that the Mk2 Cortina GTs Ford entered in Gp2 were mechanically (if not bodily) virtually Gp1 cars, the Mk2 Lotus not having been homologated yet (and the Mk2 GT probably not yet in Gp1?). Don't know the spec of the two(?)(Clark and Preston?) Mk1 Lotus entered but the MK1s, both Lotus and GT, had a lot of stuff homologated in Gp1.

Maybe we should ask Professor Stephen Hawking to take a year or so out from explaining the origin of the universe? - but he'd probably struggle to get his mind round Appendix J...

I recall we had someone come on here asking for a summary of the relevant Appendix J Groups for an article on Porsche 911s. He went a bit quiet after the initial replies and disappeared when we touched on the fact they virtually all changed most years to a greater or lesser extent...

"Greatest Homologation fiddles of all time" would also be a good subject...

That's curious. The information I gave came from a book by Philip Porter. I would have expected a historian of his stature to have included the names of all three of the car's crew and not just two of them. Maybe it's because it's a photo caption which didn't get the same degree of scrutiny and proof reading that the main text of a book does.

Duncan - sorry for the late reply.

I think the reason that third (or fourth) drivers are often overlooked is that the ACM neither mentioned them in the programme or the official results. On some occasions only the two "main" members of the crew were allowed to be in the car for the final Etape de Classement.

Since starting this thread...i have "discovered" more about the topic by inserting letters in provincial newspapers..
The 1951 Waring/Wadham (as in Wadham Stringer ) pairing..who shared the same initials and Birthday...were in deed partnered by Dougie Sharp...all local to Portsmouth.
I met Dougie on Hayling Island and gained access to Wally Warings 72 page "photo Album " on the 1951 event via his son Stuart... a fine 9th place out of 340 starters...

The 1950 team Dennis Warwick and Brother Frederick from St Albans were assisted by young Alban Warwick...only 16 at the time ..but allowed to drive once in France....(local law )

The 1953 Manchester -Hyde entry of Harry Harrop and Tommy Saxton were aided by Frank Handsworth..all local Hyde lads ..this info via Harrys son..alas the 1953 team are no more...

Back to 1951...well Known pre war racer Reggie Tongue and Spitfire pilot got two of his WW2 RAF chums Michael Royce and P.E. Warr ( injured over/at Arnhem badly ) to join him.. finishing 31st....still trying to find out more about this team...may require a letter in a RAF magazine..

so yes...the 3rd and sometimes 4th members in the big saloon cars of the
early 50,s are virtually forgotten...
I plan to retrace some ,51 route in the Cental Massif and Maritime Alps in June in my
Mk V.. In the meantime several more teams to track down...

Hi guys.

New user, having followed the forum vigorously for several years, and now I need your help! :D

Having recently started my rallying career, I have ended up with Suzuki Motorsport in Denmark. The boss of the team is Anders Lysen, who has driven a variety of cars, but one in particular has been of my interest: A Toyota Celica ST205. In itself maybe not the most exciting car, but the history makes it interesting to me.

The facts I know:
Anders drove the car in 2000.
It ran (fortunately for the 'history lesson') on the number K:AM 3643 when Anders had it.
He bought it from Jens Mulvad, who used it in 1999.
It was used by Freddy Loix at some stage, might have been the Ypres 1996 and '97-winning car.
It was used by Abdullah Bakhashab for a period of time (I assume this to be the car he used in the '98 WRC).
It was reported in a Danish magazine that the car was one of two Celicas used as test mules for Corolla WRC-parts, and that the other car was in the firm grip of TTE/Toyota.
Anders sold the car to a Dutchman or Belgian, he does not remember who.

What I am interested in is the later history of the car, and if possible, the current location of it, as I (and Anders) are very interested in knowing its whereabouts.

Hope you guys can help! :)

Hello,

I'm looking for any information of Opel Ascona 400 reg. PA-CE 802. Mr. Peter Mattig sold that car to Finland at 1983. Does anyone know any rallies or other history for this car before?

Mattig also had Ascona 400 reg. PA-CE 803 which was in his own use.

Also any information of 1983 Rallye Köln Ahrweiler's Finnish competitors is very welcome. Entry list, results, pictures...

thanks,

I don't have any of the 76 RAC official paperwork now (I was a competitor) other than the Road Book and the original entry list. Motoring News often used to print a list of retired crews and reasons for retirement a week after the main rally report - but I only have the edition with the main report now. If someone has that later edition it might be possible to work out non-starters.
Of your list, only Asterhag and Gallacher are mentioned in the report - the former as off on Staindale and the latter as out with clutch problems quite early on.
FJG from here was a competitor, so may have some better records.

Thanks mate - just looking at records and SS19 was the final stage of the rally, and he won it so I was confused as to how or why he could win the last stage yet retire from the rally. Anyone got any further info or have I just got things mixed up somewhere? I assume it must be a road section retirement but damaged front diffs is an odd one.

Petter Solberg was fastest on five of third/final leg seven stages but became the last major retirement of the event when his diff failed on the way into final service.

Easter weekend is here again. As I grew up in Kenya this has always meant "THE SAFARI"

The real Safari was always run over Easter weekend. This meant that the totally amateur organisers from the Clerk of the Course down to the scooter club escorting the cars to and from the start (my contribution to the event) were available without having to take time off from their meagre holiday allowance. It also meant the same for the drivers who were all amateur - the most professional would be those whose day job was working for one of the main dealers. The radio "hams" were available to provide a volunteer communications service to supplement the telephone, particularly in remote areas.

The Easter date added to the unpredictability of the weather conditions. The heavy "Long Rains" would arrive some time in march or April and the date of Easter varied from late march to nid-April. The result was you could have a totally dry Safari as in 1956 with 78 finishers from 90 starters and 13 with clean sheets to a very wet one like 1968 with 7 finishers from 93 starters despite cutting out the worst sections and extending the maximum lateness.

The 3 countries (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania/Tanganyika) really took the Safari to heart. The papers produced supplements with the route and the full entry. You could buy a programme and scorecard at any newsagent. The radio had a full report every two hours giving the accumulated penalties or reason for retirement for every competitor. As the expat community was fairly small we always knew a few competitors, including one year our next door neighbour (retired in floods near Morogoro in Tanzania).

If at home in Nairobi we always went down to the start to see pristine cars at 1 minute intervals and the finish to see travel worn cars arriving over a period of a few hours. When we were away for the weekend we would try to watch the Safari - I can remember waiting for ages at a road side somewhere in pitch darkness and waiting to hear the first car getting nearer and nearer until it went past us in a flash and then the sound faded into the distance. The high pitched whine of Eric Carlsson's Saab could be heard for longest.

After the rally the papers again produced supplements giving blow by blow accounts of how every car had done. "Retired at Athi River - hit zebra" is one I remember.

Ah, memories! :)

I can confirm that drivers could score points driving abroad. It was also with French drivers in 70's. I remember one or two Rallye de Pologne of 70's as a part of French Rally Championship. No idea on coefficient system...

For French pilots in the 70's and 80's, they had the possibility of marks of points on a rally out of Championship, WRC or ERC (Coeff 4), one result for year

My recollection of the 80s Belgian Open Championship, when I did some of the rallies, was that championship contenders could count 2 foreign events (I think, of high ERC co-efficient).

Hello everybody ,

Some questioons about the belgian rally championship , the "international" one from the 90's ....

Somebody can explain me how did it worked ? what was the point system ? it's looked some coeficient existed , and drivers could scored in other country ?

I try to make the points table of this era , so i take every information.

Thanks in advance for your knowledge. ;)

Thanks for your first answers. For sure , drivers could score away from Belgium , i have found a classification of the 1989 and 1990 championship BEFORE the "Boucles de Spa" , who was the first round in the country. And a press release , preview of the "Omloop" 1996 , talked about points taked by Gregoire De Mevius in the ADAC Deutschland Rally.

Also , i found a calendar (maye 1994 or 1995 , i don't remember exactly ) with coeficient 1,1 or 1,2 for some rounds. these rally were often inclued in the European Championship : Circuit des Ardennnes , Boucles de Spa , Condroz , Ypres ....

As I have mentioned on here before, in the same connection, the 1974 Scottish was cancelled, I think two or three weeks before its due date. As far as I recall (I was an entrant) there was no entry list published. The official reason was that fuel supplies could not be guaranteed because of a strike by Esso tanker drivers. To this day, most believe the real reason was pressure from rally sponsor Esso, rather than any real risk of fuel shortages with all other fuel companies unaffected.
I'm sure I have posted the 72 Scottish entry list before but, if not, I can post it or send it.

Does anyone have a copy of the 1965, 66 or 67 Scottish Rally entry lists?

34/Rally Del Salento-10.place copilot L.Volpi (IT)-first name: Luigi Volpi

Hello Janusz,

Are you sure about Luigi? I have as co-driver for Pezzuto in 1997 and for Pisacane in 1998 (15th overall) Luca Volpi - but I cannot find my source for that first name.

What can I say now. I WAS sure but at the moment I don't remember the source. I have to think and check...

On Pisacane's website it says it was Luca Volpi who co-drove him in 1998 (Ivan Pisacane Official Web Site (http://www.ivanpisacane.it/ivan.html)). I think when entering the 1997 result in the database I made the assumption that L. Volpi in 1997 would be the same co-driver as L. Volpi in 1998, but it might just as well be a Luigi Volpi, even though I cannot find another mention of him in my archives...

A request - mainly to keep this thread from dying:

Does anyone have the official result (including retirements) of Rally Ireland 2006 (10-12 March), and a full list of retirements for Rally Ireland 2005 (15-16 October)? I must have had the result for 2006 when adding the leading results to RallyBase, but cannot find it anywhere in my archive...

Hello to you all!

I am new to this great forum. I am from Sweden, and a hobby of mine is to try to research about Volvo´s in motorsport. I hope someone can help me with some things, and i also hope i can help you with somethings regarding Swedish rallies. Before this post i have read both part 2 and part 3 in the Rallying Rally History thread.

I am searching for cars, registrationnumbers, startnumber, driver and co driver.

Welcome to the forum! You've been busy, if you've been reading parts 2 and 3 of this thread...

I'm afraid I can't help you with these Finnish results - I only have details for 1000 Lakes and Arctic, but maybe someone else is able to help you. How detailed are your Swedish Rally results? Do you have all finishers with final times for those years?

By the way, the Rally Ireland 2005 & 2006 results are now online: RallyBase (http://www.rallybase.nl/index.php?type=rally&rallytype=Irl)
What I am not sure of is the co-driver of Gary Cooney (car #52) in 2006. Cooney shows up in the online results of the first stages of the rally, but does not appear on day 2 and is not listed in the retirement list in the official results (where also co-drivers are given). Does anyone know what happened to Cooney (was he excluded) and whether he was co-driven by Kieran Carroll or somebody else?

Thank you @kabouter. It took a while but it was worth it!

Well, i have the top three in almost every Swedish National rally in those years. The Swedish Rally i have almost every one that finnished. But sadly only times for the National rallys. In the South Swedish Rally i have all that finnished from 1976 to 2004.

The info about the Volvos in the Arctic rallie would be great!!

Thank you, it helps me very much!!

The first rally for Timo Salonen in the Volvo 142, was in the 1974 Kesoil Ralli in September. I looked at the wrong rally.

Do you know who was in car nr: 61 in the 1978 Hankiralli??
I have a pic on the Volvo 142 with reg nr: ABC 980, from that rally.
But no names.

Full name is Szabolc Magyari Beck. Co-driver might be Péter Janusch who drove a few national rallies in 2000, but that's just a guess.

By the way, the correct driver name for Golden Tulip 2002 is Harry van der Meer (http://members.tele2.nl/wingerden8/index2.html) and I made an error with the co-driver, it's Osman Durmus.

As some people may have noticed, a few weeks ago I started working on RallyBase again after a long period of inactivity. And now finally ERC and IRC results for 2008 are online (Matt, if you are reading this: thank you for your work and apologies for the delay!). Because it is a lot of information added to the database in a short period, there are bound to be some mistakes. As always, if you spot anything, please let me know either by e-mail (to be found on the RallyBase website) or through the forum.

Good to see you active again!

Hope you can expand your European Championship database prior to 1983 someday, that was a nice process.

Don't you think it can be Nikolay Monchev? (mind spelling)

Now that you mention that, it looks pretty obvious it must be him. I've changed it.

Also Zlatni 1982 which you sent me is online now: RallyBase (http://www.rallybase.nl/index.php?type=result&rallyid=4404)
Thank you very much for that, Janusz!

I think the co-driver of Rena Blome is Brigitte Johann, who was also her co-driver in the 1982 Rallye Deutschland. Based on the starting numbers and the usual way of numbering in Rally Zlatni in that period with non-priority drivers grouped together by car Class, I have made assumptions about the cars you weren't sure about in your result. It is just a guess, but one I am pretty confident about. Of course finding an official result including all the classes would be best. So if there are any Bulgarians with official Zlatni 1982 results reading this...

Likewise I'd also be interested to know about any retirements from this rally (or from any other Rally Zlatni in the 1980s except for 1986).

Looking for a list of winners of the Peace & Friendship Cup I couldn't find any on the Internet (perhaps there is one available, but only in a language that my Google skills cannot turn up). So from the World Rallying annuals I came up with the following list for the years 1978-1989. Janusz (or anybody else), can you confirm or correct this list, and do you have additions before 1978? Was 1989 the last year of the Cup?

Peace & Friendship Cup winners

1989 Václav Arazim (Tch) Škoda 130L
1988 Pavel Sibera (Tch) Škoda 130LR
1987 Pavel Sibera (Tch) Škoda 130LR
1986 Vallo Soots (Urs) Lada 2105 VFTS
1985 Svatopluk Kvaizar (Tch) Škoda 130LR
1984 Andrzej Koper (Pol) Renault 5 Alpine
1983 Svatopluk Kvaizar (Tch) Škoda 130RS
1982 Vello Õunpuu (Urs) Lada 1600
1981 Jan Trajbold (Tch) Škoda 130RS
1980 Václav Blahna (Tch) Škoda 130RS
1979 Jan Trajbold (Tch) Škoda 130RS
1978 Jiří Šedivý (Tch) Škoda 130RS

I have a reference that Ingvar Carlsson participated in the Swedish Rally 1979 in a BMW 320i.

However I was never able to have sure if he participates or not. Martin Holmes never puts this participation on their books but it his referred in the book of Jean Paul Renvoizé where he retired with transmission problems.
Also, Holmes says that there was a national competition. Did he participated in that category ?

Anyone could help me with this mistery ? If he participated what start number did he had ?

Also about Ingvar Carlsson does anyone knows what was the reason of his retirement in 1000 Lakes 1983 ?

And to finnish does anyone knows what was his reg plate in 1977 and in Acropolis 1980 ?

Are you sure Jorge that Holmes mentioned on Carlsson in national category in 1979? In 1978 Ingvar Carlsson did Swedish Rally with BMW 320 also with Hasselberg and he had number 117 - there were 112 international starters, so probably it was a national category. Anybody can solve that problem?

No, Janusz ! I didn't say that Holmes said that ! As I don't find him (Carlsson) in any entry list or any mention in driver's statistics that Holmes usually do and I saw that in the book of Renvoizé Carlsson appears as having participated and retired with transmission problems I try to look for one explanation. And one of possible explanations was that Carlsson could have participated only in the national category. Just one possibility ....
Where have You found that number 17 ?

Sorry for misunderstanding about M. Holmes, Jorge. I checked a source of that No17. I got a list from a certain Christophe. It was not complete but there was about 100 crews on it. As I got some other list from that source, too and they were reliable I have no reason to blame it.

Yes, there was. To quote from an e-mail Janusz sent me on the subject (I hope you don't mind, Janusz): "It was held from 1967 but initially just as a national teams' competition. I never found rules for that early period and the only final result I know is that in 1967 Cup winner was DDR team and runner up was team of Poland. Since 1973 it was a cup for drivers as well as for national teams. It was restricted for citizens of Poland, Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, Chechoslovakia, Romania and DDR."

From the post by M.Carlo above, it seems there was an individual champion in 1972 as well. M.Carlo, can I ask you what your source is for that title?

Can I briefly interrupt the flow of statistical information. In the 50's and 60's the Safari scrutineers used a Tapley Meter to measure brake efficiency. Does anybody know if this device was used on other rallies?

My reason for asking is that Pat Moss lost 2nd place in the 1962 Safari because she collected a penalty for lack of brakes. She claimed she was unfamiliar with the test and messed it up. I've always wondered whether this was true or was it an early example of 'spin'.

What Stuart Turner wrote in his Pat Moss biography (Harnessing Horsepower) rings true. The Tapley "Performance Meter" (fitted to quite a few UK cars in the 50s as an aftermarket accessory, so probably on some rally cars but more the sort of thing that would have been fitted by competitors trying to win the Monte "Concourse" award, which seemed to score points for having all manner of gadgets of limited usefulness) was a kind of "G meter" (it was not connected to anything on the car). It therefore measured the sharpest "jerk" rather than overall braking efficiency. Not sure what the Saab braking technique was with the freewheel but Turner also writes that Erik Carlsson learnt from Pat's experience of the test and did it better.
I probably sent the gauge off the clock when I drove my father's Riley RMB into the end wall of the garage when many years below the official driving age...

One question, Volvo in Motorsport !

Could You clarify one thing, please ?
Mainly in the 70's there was allways a national class or a Special class. Did they made all the route like the others ? Did they classified in the end or there was a special classification ?
I ask that because sometimes they are mixed in the overall classification, sometimes not ...

Please, could You clarify this situation ?
Thanks in advance

The National classes in Sweden had there own classification. But some classes was both National and International. And there were also a overall classification of all classes in the rally. In later years the National classes dont drive the entire Swedish Rally, only one day. Saturday for example, but i am not sure when they started doing that. Perhaps i can figure that out in the book about the rally.

Here are the Swedish National classes in the 1970´s.

1966
There were 4 classes.
SM in T. Group 1 and Group 2 cars.
SM in Rally. Group 1 and Group 2 cars.

1973
SM in Rally. Gr 1 and Gr 2.

1974
Standard: A class and Standard: B class
Class: Special. (Old Gr 2)

1982
Standard: B, Group A and Special.

1983
Gr A, International class. Standard: B and National class (National class is the former Gr 2 and class: Special)
In 1999 the Nationel class changes to Group H.

RAC 73 - Co-drivers
Malcolm Harvey-Ross is listed with Colin Newman as co-driver in the only entry list I have.
Both were from the same area and in the same car club. Car is listed as a 911 but I think he had a 240Z. I can confirm the hotel they stayed at in York and I know the name of one of the service crew but I can't absolutely confirm the co-driver!

Hello!
Thanks for your help, and the info.

I have a clip from a Swedish car magazin that say he won his class in the rally. But not which year.
I belived it was 1998, but i was not sure. Perhaps it was 1997 or 1999?!

This is the second Volvo 940 that was built for rally, used in the Swedish National class. Later called Group H.
And Mats won the championship in the Volvo 1997.

Here are the latest versions of top 10 rally seasons 1973-2010. This “project” was on hold for over a year but I thought that if I started it, I’ve to finalize it at some point. When I started again, I made so many click, click…. that I lost all the power from my right hand fingers and had to have a couple month of break again.

Both files include a main page, from where you can choose the year to browse. Clicking on the “year” button takes you to that year of “drivers” or “cars”, “drivers points” or “manufacturer’s points” and “rallies 1973-2010” where you can filter by “year”, "position", “rally”, “driver” and “car” or any combination of these.

Both files also includes tables for “driver-cars” which show what cars a certain driver has driven and a table “cars-drivers” which shows the drivers of a certain car.

The file “WRC cars 1973-2010” also include wins of “make-evo”, “make-model” and wins of a makes.

If someone doesn’t have Excel, you can download an Excel viewer from Download: Excel Viewer - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10)

Download links:

WRC drivers 1973-2010.xls download - 2shared (http://www.2shared.com/document/71RygwfH/WRC_drivers_1973-2010.html)

WRC cars 1973-2010.xls download - 2shared (http://www.2shared.com/document/xzeapmFd/WRC_cars_1973-2010.html)

At least year 1983 was a peculiar year because they’re where several drivers far outside top ten that got WRC points. For example Mike Cameron got 2 points in NZ with a 27th position and that’s was because it was the first year only group A, B and N cars & drivers scored championship points.

I hope we could have this thread also as a general discussion of rally history regulations, when homologations where taken in use etc. because there’s already a thread about history results.

Yes, it was. If had knew how much time it will take I probably wouldn’t have begun doing it. Only to get cars & drivers in some sort of order I had to make 2*39*3 = 234 sorting (Excel can sort only 3 columns at time) + to get the cars and drivers combined whit each other in the cars and drivers spreadsheets. Begun whit Access but then I remembered that Excel has Pivot tables and it was more easy to do it with the Pivot tables.

But I think I will update the files with the 2011 & 2012 seasons at the end of the year or beginning of next year.

Great stuff! Does it work fully with Openoffice's Calc?

No. Everything else seems to be working except the buttons choosing the year. Only way I’ve got them working was to go to Tools – Macros – Run a Macro and [+] for WRC drivers 1973 – 2010 or [+] for WRC cars 1973 – 2010 and then [+] for Standard and click on Taul1 (cars) or Taul2 (drivers) and choose a macro to run (CommandButton1_Click = year 1973, CommandButton2_Click = year 1974).

Not the easiest way to choose the year. Maybe faster to go to the spreadsheet and search the year to be browsed. And don’t anything about Open Office and haven’t use it much, but maybe here’s some member that knows more about how to convert Microsoft Visual Basic to the corresponding Open Office “Visual Basic” if it’s even possible.

I noticed that the command (year) buttons doesn’t work in Excel Viewer either.

The only solution for those who don’t have Excel is to download Open Office from:
Apache OpenOffice Downloads (http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html)

I found the tools to “reconnect” the buttons to the macros.

The Open Office files can be downloaded from:

WRC drivers 1973-2010.ods download - 2shared (http://www.2shared.com/file/QfVQaYPF/WRC_drivers_1973-2010.html)

WRC cars 1973-2010.ods download - 2shared (http://www.2shared.com/file/wqMhYdb8/WRC_cars_1973-2010.html)

At least the buttons works with my 3.2.1 version of Open Office

Have fun. ;)

Thanks, Jorge!

I made one mistake. Co-driver of Ari Vatanen at 1976 Tour of Dean was Peter Bryant, not Terry Harryman as I wrote yesterday. Sorry.

Vatanen used LAR801P on all the British Championship rounds in 1976. Until the 76 RAC, this was the original body shell used by Makinen to win the 75 RAC.
Airikkala used a MK1 for some rounds of the 76 British Championship (including the Scottish) after starting out in a Mk2 (both Sutton cars). I don't have reg nos to hand but can check.

Thanks to You all!

But still missing dates for those rallies?

I have such a many questions according to Finnish drivers abroad. There was such a pity information except World Championship events in Finland at 70's and even in early 80's.

In 1976 Pentti used at least Mk 1 SNO666M and Mk 2 MLD999P.

I'll try to help if anyone of You have some questions according to Finnish rallies.

One quastion JLe regarding Finnish rally

What was the reason of retirement of Mikko Pajunen in WRC Finland Rally 2010 ?
the real reason ... 'technical' doesn't count ... ;-)

Thank You

According to this entry list:
http://www.thedeanrallies.com/images/stories/ToD_76_Entry_List.pdf
Ari used LAR800P with Clark in 801, of course what was put on the entry form & what they actually turned up in could be different!
Pentti's registration is given as MLO999P.
The entry list is posted on the Tour of Dean page of the Dean Rallies web site here:

Finnish motorsport newspaper says that the last reason was an electric throttle.

I surely wonder if Ari really used LAR800P because it was RHD and with Cossack livery.

I think you can safely assume it was their normal cars, used for the rest of the season, for each of them. I did a bit of work for the Tour of Dean web site and most of it involved giving names etc. from memory where they found the official entry lists were incomplete or had obvious errors.
MLD999P was of course the Sutton registration (I'm not saying car!) later used by Vatanen in the 77 British championship.

Hello!

Can anyone help me with rallies in Denmark in the 1990`s. I am looking for entries made by Swedish driver´s in Volvo 240 turbo.
I know that some Swedes rallied there with these cars, and would be greatful if someone have any info, like entrylists or pics. Or a link to a webpage with info.

I cannot help you with much - but I do remember some names of Swedish drivers in Danish rallies during the 90's.
Most known was Jonas Kruse, who was very popular due to how he threw the huge Volvo Turbo arround the stages.
Another name, I remember, was Tony Mårtensson, who for several years drove many rallies in Denmark. However I think, that his Volvo was only a normally aspirated and not a Turbo.
A Danish video production company has recorded Danish rallies since 1988 and do sell DVD's from the 90's - I remember having seen at least Kruse in some of their videos, but do not remember which ones. So - not much help, really. Anyway - a link is here: Race Media Website4 (http://www.race-media.dk/RM-DVDER.html)
I will try to dig out some old magazines one evening to see if I can find some results for you.

Thank you for the help and the link!

Yes, Mårtensson drove a N/A car, but now have a 240 Group A rally car. He actually bought the car from Jan Norgard Jensen in -95. Before that the car was raced by Peter Werner Hansen in the late 1980´s.

Hej Grabben, I can't remember your name but you might get a few laughs if I send you some stuff from mid 80s Canadian Rally Championship where Bo Skovronek from Regina Saskatchewan (actually from near Danzig in the former Ost Pruessen) was Champion in his 240 GpA car... my first National Championship rally ever was Rocky Mountain Rally which he won and it was chance to see a couple of times how the other guys were doing and it was a beautiful sight to see Bo slide that 240..

Buit what's this about 240 being huge? Its about--within a few cm the size of a modern Focus,.

Now 740 and 940 jeeezuz! stretch-limos!

Doesn't seem to hurt them on gravel.

Tack så hemskt mycket!! That would be great!! I have tried to find some stuff on Bo´s Volvo, and also Wayne Baldwin´s 240.

Here is my E-Mail: [email:3r3a5k2f]volvoinmotorsport@yahoo.se[/email:3r3a5k2f]

In Sweden there is a lot of 240, 740 and 940 in rallies. In 1997 Mats Karlsson won the National championship with a 940, with a N/A engine putting out 275 hp
