2014 Monaco GP Thread
So its time for the glamour date in the F1 calender once again. Monte Carlo.
I have to be honest, although many dont enjoy the sometimes processional racing at Monaco, it has always been one of my favorite races. That said last seasons first 40 laps were some of the dullest in 20 + years that I remember. It came alive later in that race.
Generally though I love Monaco and this season with the cars appearing more unsettled and harder to drive, it could be a fun year.
Drivers Championship after 5 Rounds
1 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 100 2 Nico Rosberg Mercedes 97 3 Fernando Alonso Ferrari 49 4 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull 45 5 Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull 39 6 Nico Hulkenberg Force India 37 7 Valterri Bottas Williams 34 8 Jenson Button Mclaren 23 9 Kevin Magnussen Mclaren 20 10 Sergio Perez Force India 20 11 Kimi Raikkonen Ferrari 17 12 Felipe Massa Williams 12 13 Romain Grosjean Lotus 4 14 Jean Eric Vergne Toro Rosso 4 15 Dani Kyvat Toro Rosso 4 16 Adrian Sutil Sauber 0 17 Esteban Gutierrez Sauber 0 18 Max Chilton Marussia 0 19 Kamui Kobayashi Caterham 0 20 Pastor Maldonado Lotus 0 21 Jules Bianchi Marussia 0 22 Marcus Ericcson Caterham 0
It strikes me looking at the Championship that Alonso has done amazingly well considering I remember at least 2 races seeing Ferrari being awful. Also I notice Bianchi is having a bad season compared to Chilton. Unlike last season.

Yes no doubt a Mercedes will be first across the finish line - most likely an AMG SLS, given how unforgiving some of these 2014 cars appear

Nope. We won't see more than 5 retirements maybe...

I'm liking the tidy formatting of the stats that you've used for this and the previous grands prix, steveaki13. I am going to go out on a limb and hedge my bets - either Alonzo or Ricciardo for the win! This statement comes with many proviso's not the least of which is all things being equal, the silver arrows will be hard to beat.

That could still mean 5 safety car periods
Seriously though I'd bet on a few more than that, maybe 6-8. There have been at least 2 reliability retirements in every race this year, and usually at least 3 people crash in Monaco. With a cars prone to power oversteer and unstable braking, more than 3 accidents seems likely I think.

I think that with the extra torque this year we will see more cars than usual in the wall. I am really looking forward to this race.
