Hints are good, but if we cant use google to help, they are possibly not quite good enough.
In the back of my befuddled brain there is a book set in the Russian Revolution that has possibly got "Don" in the title, but I would have to cheat to find it I can picture the cover, with a Revolutionary soldier on it. I think it was ? ? Flows the Don. I would be guessing at the first two words, and I can't guarantee the correctness of the other three either

I'm such a nice guy that the key word was buried quietly somewhere above 8) Bonus points for naming the author..
And for a bit of insight on the whole Ukraine and Russia and Crimea and Tartar thing....read the book.
Bonus Bonus points for the name of the other book by same author with the river in the name.John Vanlandingham

Ding! Ding!
Тихий Дон literally "Quiet Don"
Great series of books about a crazy period in history..and as we see the tragedy continues...history and geography have such deep and intertwined roots, eh?
You got that.
Do you want to go for double or nothing? The name of the other book I so broadly hinted was ........?
You win twice as much or maybe nothing...Go for it!John Vanlandingham

I don't know. I owned a book by Sholohov called "Virgin Soil Upturned", never read it cos I associated it with the communist literature. Threw it away last summer when I cleaned the house.
I also know about "The fate of a man" cos a great movie directed by the famous Serghey Bondarciuk was based on it.
Looks like I won nothing but I'm used to sc*ew it.Last edited by gadjo_dilo; 1st April 2014 at 13:37.

I love the movie "Fate of a man" and love the line when the ex-soldier (Bondarchuck himself) and the old guy have to wait for the ferry "Have some of mine, It's hell to smoke alone"
Well you won the big Prize to ask the next question, better hurry before those guys come round and start lecturing you and telling you you're not welcome...and moaning.
You didn't get the extra points ---the other GEOGRAPHIC related book title was "The Don flows on the the SEA" but don't feel bad...Almost nobody under 50 in "the West" remembers anything....John Vanlandingham

Now I'm angry for not being able to get extra points so I'll ask a dull Q:
What countries start their name with E?
