Best thing to do is forget about the title 'Super Touring'. When this began to be adopted (first by the FIA) I have no idea. In 1990 the BTCC revised its class structure — instead of there being a variety of classes, there were now only two, namely categories for up to two-litre and over two-litre cars (M3s, Cavaliers etc in the former, Sierra Cosworths in the latter). The up to two-litre formula was adopted for the single-class BTCC in 1991. So, both 1990 and 1991 are correct depending on whether you mean the introduction of the category that became Super Touring, or its use as the BTCC's sole class.
