Pierre Gasly has sent a clear message to Alpine after another strong weekend for Team Enstone in Florida. Obviously, I hope that it's going to be the same in Canada," Gasly told media, including RacingNews365. "I think [Miami] seemed to be surprisingly good on our side compared to the rest of the midfield, and hopefully it's not track-specific.”

"There'll be more work to do over the next two weeks, but that's why I think it was quite important to capitalise on this good form, and now we've just got to work and make sure we still have this pace advantage going to Canada. I think the field is just slightly more spread than we thought," the one-time grand prix winner said.

"So the gaps probably with the cars ahead were a bit bigger, but I think on my side, there are three or four tenths we need to find, like just understanding the struggles I've had with the traction. But the cars behind clearly seem to have taken a step back in terms of pace compared to us. Still, I'd rather be in this position going into Canada, but we just need to make sure we keep that advantage."

Pierre Gasly details close call with Max Verstappen in Miami GP lap one chaos

Speaking after the race, which later saw him flipped into the barrier after contact with Liam Lawson, Gasly suggested the braking had cost him up to six spots on the grid. “Honestly, it was one of those situations where I took a really good start, and if I had a worse start, I would have actually got out of lap one in a better position,” he told media including PlanetF1.com.

“So it was quite unfortunate, quite unlucky timing. [To] exit turn one, [position] seven, or maybe close to six and then I see him coming back, and I had to hit the brake to avoid him, because obviously it was extremely slow. Then I just got swallowed by the whole bunch of cars behind me. So I think we lost five, six positions there.”

Pierre Gasly has described his race-ending crash at the Miami Grand Prix as “very scary” after his Alpine was flipped upside down. “I [hit] the wall rear-end first. I didn't even know where I was going to land. So it wasn't pleasant. “I knew he was there, I knew we were side by side. Unfortunately, we'd probably just have to accept losing the position.”

“But I knew he would still try, so that's why I left the space, a car and a half on the inside. Just for him, at least, to have the choice to stay there if he really wanted. I haven't seen the footage but clearly it was too optimistic coming in.” Lawson avoided a penalty as it was later found that a gearbox failure resulted in his dramatic lock-up.

No penalty for Lawson as gearbox fault caused collision with Gasly

Liam Lawson was not penalised for his dramatic collision with Pierre Gasly as it was caused by a technical fault on his car. “It sucks for both of us, obviously,” said the Racing Bulls driver. “I just went into the last corner and when I braked, I lost the gearbox and I went into neutral. So I basically had no gears and I couldn’t stop.”

Lawson’s Racing Bulls team said fifth gear broke in his car which caused his loss of control. “It’s not something I’ve had before,” Lawson continued. “Obviously it’s quite a big issue for us and it’s what meant we had to retire the car. But it’s a shame because it’s obviously taken out Pierre as well.” Both drivers retired following the collision. The stewards accepted Lawson’s explanation for the incident and issued no penalty.

Gasly said Lawson apologised to him following the crash. “It was definitely a scary feeling being flipped over in a Formula 1 car so I am glad it wasn’t too serious and I was able to climb out and walk away,” he said. “My race was over with the incident with Liam, which, in my mind is totally avoidable and should not happen,” he added. “He has visited me to say sorry but I am just disappointed for the team as we had the pace and we deserved points.”

Mercedes bid for Alpine could be blocked by FIA multi-team rule change

Any move by the FIA to outlaw multi-team ownership could also force Red Bull to divest its junior team, Racing Bulls, which it has owned for 20 years. It could also open the door for Horner – nemesis of Mercedes principal Toto Wolff – to return to F1 at Alpine following his abrupt departure from Red Bull last year.

Ben Sulayem appeared to welcome the idea, saying: “Who can remove Christian Horner’s name from motorsport and Formula 1? You can’t. It was always success. But success also has enemies, as we know. If you ask me, we miss him in this sport, and I keep in touch with him, and he was good for the [Red Bull] team, good for the sport. We welcome him back, and someone like him would always find his way.”
