Oliver Bearman considers himself “lucky” after the crash, revealing that he was back at work for Haas the same week, performing vital work ahead of Miami. “I had a bit of swelling on the knee, but everything’s okay now, luckily, it was the right knee, so I was okay. Actually, I was back driving on the simulator by Wednesday or Thursday, because my brother and I were practicing for an endurance race on the weekend.”
“It could have been a lot worse. So very, very thankful and looking forward to getting back out in Miami.” Bearman’s update reveal both just how lucky the Briton was to emerge unscathed from his crash, while also highlighting the impact on his health in the immediate aftermath.
While not the sole cause, his crash will heavily influence the talks between the teams and the FIA to look at regulation changes ahead of Miami. Anyone wanting to keep the regulations as they are need look no further than the accident as a reason for urgent change.

Haas shines early in 2026 as Bearman leads surprise midfield charge

Haas has been the surprise of the start of the season, scoring points in all the first three races. The beginning of the 2026 F1 season has been a dream start for Haas, the only midfield team to score points in the first three races, together with Ferrari and Mercedes. Bearman managed to finish 7th in Melbourne and 5th in Shanghai, conquering a huge amount of points and allowing Haas to sit in 4th place in the Constructors’ Championship on the eve of the Miami Grand Prix, even in front of a top team like Red Bull Racing.
After positively shocking everyone in the paddock during the last few races of the 2025 season, Haas’ Oliver Bearman’s start to the 2026 season has been even more impressive, with a total of 17 points scored in the first three races of the season. The young British driver has demonstrated that he has made a further step forward in terms of tyre management over the race distance, but it’s the car that really stands out among other midfield cars:
The VF-26, in fact, has shown an incredible chassis and aerodynamic platform, which makes it very competitive in both slow- and high-speed corners. The floor and the bodywork generate a lot of downforce, which makes the car balanced and helps with tyre management at high fuel loads. Bearman, in fact, particularly stood out in the race more than in qualifying, proof that his car has a better behaviour and balance over long distances, which allows him to take the edge over his direct rivals.

Komatsu highlights 'important quality' Bearman brings to Haas
Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu has explained some of the attributes that make Ollie Bearman such a good team player at Haas.

Ayao Komatsu has highlighted Ollie Bearman's ability to motivate people around him as an "important quality" he has brought to Haas, with the young Briton one of the standout performers of 2026 so far. Bearman finished at the top of the midfield in both Australia and China, as well as scoring in the Sprint in Shanghai, and despite not finishing in Japan the 20-year-old remains seventh in the standings with 17 points.
But, while his on-track confidence is growing week after week, Haas Team Principal Komatsu has found more to praise than just Bearman's results.
“He takes steps every single time," said Komatsu during the Team Representatives press conference in Suzuka. "You saw how much he improved throughout last year, right?
“As we said, his speed’s never been in doubt. Then you saw the consistency improvement towards the end of last year. Mexico, P4, was amazing under huge pressure. Then pre-season testing throughout, working with the engineers, mechanics, feedback, all the quality has improved. If you look at the first two races, he hardly made any mistakes.

Oliver Bearman reveals ‘really cool’ way he had to ‘convince’ Ferrari’s driver academy to sign him

The 20-year-old admitted that he was nervous but eventually managed to earn the trust of Ferrari by showing them what he could do out on the track. When asked if driving for Ferrari is his main goal, Bearman said: “That is, of course, my target, especially after the trust that they gave me. First of all, to take me into their academy and invest so much in me from F3 all the way to Formula 1.”
“Putting me in this seat with Haas, also to trust me with their car when Carlos (Sainz) was sick. They had other reserve drivers with more experience, but they took the shot on the 18-year-old, and luckily it worked out. So, they’ve obviously given me a huge amount of trust and believed in me from the very beginning. Actually, I went to that camp and really had to convince them to sign me. Because they were actually trying to sign karting drivers, not Formula 4 drivers.”
When asked what he did to convince Ferrari, Bearman replied: “I would like to say that I was in there with a load of confidence and everything, but I was very nervous when doing the meetings with the guys. But, we went on track and showed them what we are really capable of first-hand, and that was a really cool thing that they do. They put the drivers to the test in front of them, it’s like football scouting, they see exactly what they are capable of. I hope to one day put on the Ferrari suit and race for them.”

Oliver Bearman calls for urgent F1 fix after frightening crash
Oliver Bearman wants to see changes to the F1 rules after Franco Colapinto's "not good" move at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Haas driver Oliver Bearman has urged F1 to address dangerous speed differentials created by the sport's new power unit regulations, following his high-speed crash while avoiding Franco Colapinto at Suzuka. The Briton described the Alpine driver's defensive manoeuvre as "unacceptable" under the current rules, which feature a 50-50 power split between internal combustion engine and electrical battery that can create closing speeds of up to 50kph between cars.
Bearman acknowledged potential solutions are being explored ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, saying: "I think there are a few tweaks that we can do with the FIA, and we've been working very well together to try and avoid these big differences in speed. Because, like I said, 50kph, normally, that's like a car on a cooldown lap, versus a car pushing, and then when they move to defend their position, it's dangerous."
