Rally Islas Canarias unveils expanded WRC route to mark 50th anniversary in Gran Canaria
Rally Islas Canarias is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in emphatic fashion, unveiling a significantly expanded all-tarmac route that brings new super special stages, a redesigned finale and more than 322 competitive kilometres
The organisers of the Rally Islas Canarias – Rally de España have presented a significantly revised itinerary for the event’s 50th anniversary edition, combining historic references with an expanded competitive format for this year's World Rally Championship round.
Spain’s only all-tarmac WRC round will, for the first time, run across four consecutive days and feature 18 special stages totalling more than 322 competitive kilometres. The route includes two entirely new super special stages and a redesigned final leg, underlining the event’s intention to balance sporting demands with increased spectator engagement.
Competition will begin on Thursday with a shakedown at Santa Brígida before the opening super special stage, ‘BP Ultimate - Circuito Islas Canarias’. The 2.27-kilometre test will be held at the historic Circuito Islas Canarias, a venue closely associated with the rally’s early years and expected to attract large crowds.
Friday’s action will comprise repeated runs of ‘Valleseco - Artenara’, ‘La Aldea - Mogán’ and ‘Tejeda - San Mateo’. Several stages have been lengthened and adjusted to pass through town centres, reflecting a greater presence for municipalities supporting the event.
Saturday will feature the rally’s longest test, ‘Moya - Gáldar’, at 28.90 kilometres, following stages at Maspalomas and Arucas - Teror. The day will conclude with the second new super special, ‘BP Ultimate - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’, run around Santa Catalina Park in the island’s capital after a ceremonial regroup on José Mesa y López Avenue.
The final leg on Sunday has been completely overhauled, with WRC crews tackling the new ‘Ingenio - Valsequillo’ stage before the rally concludes with ‘Santa Lucía-Agüimes’, designated as the Wolf Power Stage.
Organisers said the revised road book honours the rally’s heritage while reinforcing its status on the international calendar, marking half a century of competition with its most extensive itinerary to date.
