Piastri begs no forgiveness after 'overly-intense' Austrian GP battle with Norris.
The title fight between Piastri and Norrris got closer as the Briton took 7 points off his teammate's lead in the standings. Max Verstappen on the other hand has seemingly fallen out of contention as with his DNF the gap to Piastri grew to 61 points.

Speaking after the race at the press conference, Piastri looked back on the battle with his teammate. "I mean, again, there have been a few battles in the past, not just last week, but last year and the year before. So, I think we both knew what to expect," said the Aussie driver looking at the long history of the wheel-to-wheel racing he and his teammates have undergone.

Austrian GP McLaren battle gets heated. "It was a tough battle. It was close at some points, probably pushing the limits a bit much from my side once or twice. But we're fighting for race wins in Formula 1. It's going to be pretty tough work and pretty hard," said a resolute Piastri who begs no forgiveness for how hard he raced his McLaren teammate Norris.

"I thought it was an entertaining race. After the first stop, maybe we didn't do the right thing giving Lando some breathing room, but the first 20 laps were pretty intense. So, it was a good battle."

Why Bernie Ecclestone presented Lando Norris with F1 winners’ medal in Austria

Norris held off the challenge of team-mate Oscar Piastri to take an impressive victory around the Red Bull Ring to keep his title hopes up, as well and strengthening McLaren’s position at the top of the Constructors’ Championship. The president’s medal, which has been awarded to all winning drivers since the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, is presented by the president himself, Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

However, the Emirati was unable to attend this weekend’s race in Spielberg, and Ecclestone, 94, deputised to place the medal around Norris’ neck. “I think it’s really nice that the President gives a personal congratulations to the winning competitor,” he said.

“As he could not attend the Formula 1 race here in Austria, he asked me to present his medal for him which I am pleased and honoured to do. It was also great to be there, as though it might seem strange, this was the first time in almost 70 years in this sport that I’ve actually been on the podium! So, that was also nice.”

Is this the turning point? Norris shakes up F1 title race with Austrian GP masterclass
Norris’ new grit puts Piastri under real pressure as F1 heads to Silverstone

Lando Norris fought back in style at the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix, and this could be the weekend that redefines the Formula 1 championship. After a tough run and questions about his ability to handle high-stakes pressure, Norris produced the kind of drive that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about him.

Can Norris keep this up for a real title challenge? For those of us who have watched Norris’ journey, this win felt like something bigger than just a boost in the standings. It was a show of maturity, mental strength, and championship-level composure. When Piastri cut the gap after their final pit stops, Norris got on the radio and said, “I need some pace—please help,” but he never let the situation overwhelm him. He steadied himself and kept his rival at bay.

Norris’ win closes the title gap to Oscar Piastri to just 15 points with Silverstone up next. The feeling in the paddock is that we’re on the brink of a classic two-driver fight for the championship, and this victory might be the moment Norris truly believes he can take it all the way.

Kimi Antonelli apologises to Max Verstappen as Mercedes driver receives British GP grid penalty for causing crash in Austria
Max Verstappen retired on the first lap after being hit by Kimi Antonelli; the Mercedes driver will receive a three-place grid penalty at Silverstone.
29 June 2025
Sky Sports

Kimi Antonelli said he was "super sorry" for taking Max Verstappen out of the Austrian Grand Prix as a first-lap collision between the pair earned the Mercedes driver a grid penalty for next weekend's race at Silverstone.

Antonelli told Sky Sports F1: "I didn't necessarily brake too late, it's just that when I braked, I braked hard because I was behind other cars, and in that moment, I locked the rears. Then I just couldn't stop the car. I locked the rear and then lost the car and then had to avoid (Liam) Lawson. Then it was too late because I was arriving just too quick.”

“I started to lock the front and instead of decelerating, I was accelerating. The car was just taking speed, and the crash was inevitable. Just feel super sorry to the team, and to Max of course, because obviously he was just a passenger."

Antonelli handed grid penalty for Verstappen collision in Austrian GP

Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been handed a three-place grid penalty for next weekend’s British Grand Prix, following his opening-lap collision with Max Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. In their official report, the Austrian Grand Prix stewards outlined the sequence of events and Antonelli’s own explanation of what went wrong:

“The stewards heard from the driver of car 12 (Kimi Antonelli), the team representative, and reviewed video evidence. The driver of car 12 locked up the rear brakes into Turn 3 and collided with car 1,” the report read.

“In the hearing, the driver admitted that he made a mistake as he locked up the rear wheels while using his regular braking point, but also pointed out that he needed to avoid a collision with car 30 (Liam Lawson) in front of him and released the brakes for a short period of time to do so."

DNF FOR MAX IN AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX: 'THESE THINGS HAPPEN'
29 June 2025

Max Verstappen failed to finish the Austrian Grand Prix after a collision with the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli on the opening lap. “We had a good start, definitely a better one compared the past few races, but we were done after three corners. I got hit in the back and that was that”, reflected Max after his DNF. “But these things happen, Kimi and I already had a chat and things are okay. Nobody does these things on purpose. He is a great talent, and he’ll keep learning.”

The reigning champion added: “Of course it’s shame for all the fans, but this is racing. We’ve had great moments here so maybe we are a bit spoiled. Yesterday we were a bit unlucky in qualifying too, but on the whole, we just don’t have enough pace, so we have to analyse and have a better weekend next week.”

With McLaren scoring a 1-2 victory and Max failing to score points, his championship campaign appears to falter. “I’m honestly not thinking about that. We just take it race by race. There’s is definitely more in it, but we need to see if we can find the pace. Everyone gives a 100% and that’s the only thing we can keep doing.”
