Hamilton 'grateful' for Hungarian GP podium after ‘hair-raising’ end.
Lewis Hamilton earned himself his third podium of the season - his 200th in F1 - in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, but the Mercedes driver admitted to enduring a tough race marked by a “hair-raising” moment with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

"Ultimately, we didn't have the pace of the McLarens, or did we have the pace of the Red Bulls," Hamilton said after the race. But we were just able to hold on at the beginning of the race. It was very tough to hold on and make those tyres last.”
"And obviously the close battle we had at the end was a bit hair-raising. But that's motor racing. I'm really happy and grateful for the points. Big thank you for the team." In parc fermé, Hamilton was asked by his former Mercedes team mate if his battle with Verstappen which unfolded over two stages had been “nerve-racking”.
"It's not nerve-racking,” he responded. "I think it when you see the pace at which they closed the gap in certain corners, you just laugh to yourself because it's not something that I can do.”

Why FIA took no action in Hamilton vs Verstappen clash
The FIA has concluded that neither Max Verstappen nor Lewis Hamilton were predominantly to blame for their late collision in F1’s Hungarian GP

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have avoided a penalty for their late race collision in Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix after the FIA concluded that no driver was predominantly to blame. However, the stewards did conclude that Hamilton could have “done more” to avoid the coming together.
“I got a lot of shit thrown at me in Austria with people saying moving under braking, blah blah blah,” said Verstappen. “I am positioning my car on the initial movement and then I keep it straight. Today, under braking, he just kept turning to the right and that is why I also locked up, because I was going for the move.”
The stewards did not agree with Verstappen’s criticisms about Hamilton’s driving and, after studying video, timing and telemetry data, concluded that the seven-time champion had driven within the boundaries of the rules. However, they did note that Hamilton could have perhaps done more to avoid the collision once it became clear that Verstappen was alongside him.

Hamilton thrilled with podium in Hungary after ‘very tough’ race as he reflects on ‘hair-raising’ battle with Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton was delighted to continue Mercedes’ good run of results by taking the final podium position at the Hungarian Grand Prix, having faced a battle to make his tyres last – as well as engaging in a close scrap with Max Verstappen – en route to finishing in third.
After lining up in P5 on the grid, Hamilton had a good start and initially looked to have clinched third from Lando Norris, who had been edged out from pole. While the McLaren soon retook the place, Hamilton remained in fourth and later on snatched third again – this time from Verstappen – thanks to undercutting the Red Bull.
“Big thanks to this amazing crowd this weekend and a huge congratulations to McLaren on the one-two – that's my old original family, so really happy to see all the boys, the whole team back up front,” Hamilton commented after stepping out of the car. “For us today, the team has done a great job to continue on with pushing this car. Ultimately we didn't have the pace of the McLarens or of the Red Bulls, but we just were able to hold on at the beginning of the race.”

Toto Wolff looks forward to Mercedes form in Belgium. Team principal Toto Wolff was pleased with the result and expects more favourable conditions in Belgium:
“Claiming a podium finish, our fifth race in a row doing so, feels good. The McLarens were very strong today and out of reach for us in these hot conditions. “Congratulations to them and Oscar. They deserved today’s victory. We were able to maximise the result with Lewis, though, and that is encouraging.”
“Yesterday’s setback with George meant he had to fight through the field. In the end, it was a good recovery from where he started… We now head to Spa where the conditions will likely be cooler, and hopefully that will suit us a little more.”

George Russell set the fastest lap of the 2024 Hungarian GP with a 1:20.305 on a weekend when he salvaged a handful of points after a devastating qualifying result at the Hungaroring in Europe. Russell was relegated to 17th on the grid when a misjudgement of weather conditions saw him fail to put in a lap before more rain, whilst he was also insufficiently fuelled for consecutive runs to understand the evolving track conditions.
It ruled out his chances of a podium just two weekends on from his first win of the season and left him very frustrated as he called for an internal review of Mercedes decision making and procedure. But for the Grand Prix on Sunday, July 21, he did as much as he realistically could to limit the damage by finishing eighth with the fastest lap for a haul of five points, finishing three seconds behind Sergio Perez at the flag.
He set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 53 as he tried to chase down the Red Bull of Perez, although he fell narrowly short in the end. The result saw him drop to eighth in the F1 standings behind Lewis Hamilton, who finished third, whilst Perez extended his gap to Russell by one point.

Amid all of the excitement on the track at the Hungarian Grand Prix, it was also another race weekend for teams and drivers to secure their futures beyond 2024
Martin Brundle tells Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton with Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Asked who he would put in the second Mercedes next season by Nico Rosberg, Brundle said: “As I’ve got George Russell who can lead the team, I would bring Antonelli along and just put up with the mistakes he’ll make at the beginning.”
At Silverstone at the previous round of the Formula 2 season, Antonelli won the Sprint Race in treacherous conditions and finally stood on the top step of the podium for PREMA at that level. While he was taken out before his Feature Race began, he took his performances up another notch in Hungary.
