I think generally increased safety means competitors are far less worried about being injured/killed, so can try a lot harder than previous generations. The only consideration is speed. Anything else and you lose time to your competitors. Of course, the cars in general are more capable than ever, the suspension coping with some of the ridiculous height/length/ speed of jumps is insane.
