Marshals "job" (not aware of anyone getting paid to be a marshal) is to ensure the safe running of the stage mainly centered around spectator safety and assistance of a crew in the event of an incident. Going onto a live stage to move rocks isnt exactly supposed to be part of the role however those of us who have marshalled will have moved rocks at some point. Its up to the crews normally not to hit them.

You're right. That's only potential danger some rock to fly by a car and hit someone.

One thing is for sure - no spectator could go out and remove those rocks. This is Portugal so you'd have about four meathead officers coming straight towards you.

It's just unlucky I think. This exact same thing could have happened on a corner free from people. It's just rallying, the road is evolving all the time.

Gabbage-sized rocks in racing line shouldn`t be there, so yes. But what do you expect, when an organizer thinks it is ok to let the stage continue through a forestfire, with a place catching cars out or almost catching out.

It's sad for Tanak and for the championship.
He was outside the cobblestone road. He was making a cutting of almost 2 metres. All crews make this huge cut but it takes its risks.

Well, That only means they have placed their oil cooler in the wrong place, or their protection is not good enough.

Anyway, it shouln't happen. A big rock may damage the suspension, but nothing else.

After they graded the roads and laid sand to smooth them, maybe Toyota didnt think the road could be so rough and didnt get their suspension soft enough here.

Hyundai have also had their problems with 'weak' front suspension breaking easily in the past.

The decades of experience of M-Sport may be a big reason why they rarely seem to get such damage.

Video of Tänak hitting stones. The filmer even zooms on the stones before Tänak. After he hits them, the marshalls go throw them out.

Neuville hit the sharp one too, his car also lifts at the front, not as much as Tanak's. Neuville was on the throttle, perhaps that saved him.

Yeah, but that was outside the raceline. And to me it looks like Tanak is not cutting. Neuville did cut after going wide in the righthander.

How ridiculous is this timing? 5 hours between morning and midday loop. Do they need to hold a siesta in between or what?

Five hours is bending it.

130 km of liaison
Regroup at 13:25
Service in at 13:40
Service out at 14:14

76 km of liaison
SS5 starts at 15:25

So the biggest gap is the 2 hours from the end of SS4 to the regroup, but that long liaison and entering the city probably takes all that time.

I agree that it's annoying for spectators, but geography cannot be changed, reasonable places for service park and reasonable stages are often far from each other.
